The Alchemist is an important craftsperson you will use from the start of the game up to and during the end game.
Which Services the Alchemist Provides
- Upgrade your health potions as you level up your character
- Craft Elixirs and Incense
- Transmute body parts to summon Varshan who can be farmed for particular unique items
- Transmute Resplendent Sparks to create a handful of different Uber Uniques
Health Potion Upgrades
You do not craft health potions, they are collected as loot. However, how much health they give you when you drink them depends on what level you have upgraded them to at the Alchemist.
At different Player Levels in the game, you can visit the Alchemist to upgrade your health potion level. This will cost you some gathered herbs and gold.

Elixir Crafting
You can have one Elixir active at a time. Drinking another elixir will replace the existing elixir. They only buff you and not your party members. You can however trade Elixirs.
Elixirs increase your statistics or buffs and also increase the rate at which you earn experience points by 5% - 8% and last at most 30 minutes. The effects of the Elixir persist after death.
They are crafted mostly from plants that you can gather but also other Crafting Materials such as Veiled Crystal and gem fragments.
Elixirs you can craft and some that you can't (listed here) will also drop as rewards from caches and Helltide chests and they are automatically stacked in your inventory. You can trade them with other players.

Incense Crafting
Incense is a great way to boost stats and increase the rate at which you earn experience points.
You will need to collect Crafting Materials out in the world from bushes and slaying monsters. You take these materials to the Alchemist who can craft them into Incense. These processes will also cost you gold.
- Can have 1 Incense from each of the 3 Types active at the same time
- They last 20 minutes and persist through death
- They affect you and nearby players (grouped or ungrouped)
- Buffs stack with any Elixir you have active and Incense burned by other nearby players (grouped or ungrouped)
- The Experience buff from your incense does not stack with the Experience buff from another incense burnt by yourself or other players. The Experience buff from any Elixir you have active will stack with a Experience buff from a single Incense.
- They can be traded with other players

Summoning Items
There are quite a few Summoning Items in Diablo 4 and the Alchemist is involved in just a few of them, detailed below. Read the Summoning Items page for all items associated with summoning members of the Boss Ladder and others.
One of each of these body parts is required to summon Varshan in the Malignant Burrow at the Tree of Whispers. You can find the body parts in Caches rewarded at the Tree of Whispers for completing Whispers_of_the_Dead but the Alchemist can also craft them for you.
If you have lots of one particular body part you can use them at the Alchemist to craft a different random part in a Malignant Body Cache.
These materials must be in your bag, not your stash, for the Alchemist to use them.
Transmute Resplendent Sparks
If you have been farming Uber Uniques from Duriel and Andariel that you do not need you can salvage them at the Blacksmith for Resplendent Sparks which can then be used at the Alchemist to craft into other Uber Uniques listed below.
Each recipe requires:
- 4 Resplendent Sparks
- 50,000,000 Gold
- Requires Level 35
