What is Diablo 4 About?

Diablo 4 takes place decades after the events of Reaper of Souls. Though Malthael’s plans were foiled, the Angel of Death exacted a terrible toll on humanity and Sanctuary suffered grave devastation. Entire populations decimated, cities ravaged, heaven itself suffered great losses causing them to shutter their gates.

You can imagine what that does to people. Religious schisms, famine, war, basically humanity left to our own devices and we know how well we do on our own.

It is against this backdrop of despair that Lilith returns and that’s when the events in the cinematic happened. This is important because in the mythos of Sanctuary Lilith is the mother of humanity. Lilith represents that demonic half that we all have inside our hearts. In that mythos she and the angle Inarius along with other rebel angles and rebel demons tired of this endless great conflict created a world that would be free of conflict called Sanctuary and along with that created the first mortals. That’s the legend, that’s what we’ve heard.

The scary part of that is that she knows our hearts, she knows what motivates us and can manipulate us. The other scary part of that is she is Mephisto’s daughter and she represents a link to an even great threat, the Greater Evils.

Even though she was summoned for reasons we are not ready to divulge just yet we know it can’t be good. With Heaven having closed their gates there’s no one to answer our prayers. Evan the Horadrim are but mad old men talking to themselves, talking to graves, clutching their bottles are hard as they once clutched their swords.

What are the Diablo 4 classes?

Blizzard announced that there will be five classes when the game releases. The first three were announced at BlizzCon 2019 and these include the Barbarian, Sorcerer, and Druid. These classes were playable at BlizzCon.

The final playable class in the initial release was announced in 2022 at the Xbox showcase. The Necromancer is the fifth class.

The fourth class is the Rogue which was announced at BlizzConline in 2021.

Blizzard intends to keep these classes as close to their roots as possible from the previous games and players can expect the fluid combat that appeared in Diablo 3 with enhancements.

The max character level is 100.

Unlike the previous games, there will be elements of character customisation such as the ability to change a character’s skin tone, scars, and select their facial appearance from a selection of types. More details on what will be in the final release are yet to be revealed.

What are the Diablo 4 Class Skills?

Every class will have their skills defined by six different types, and six skills can be added to the skills bar. The elective mode will allow players to activate whatever skills they want in each slot.

The main difference between Diablo 3 and Diablo IV is that points can be added to each individual skill to increase each one’s rank. Items such as Legendaries can also impact the effectiveness of skills.

Find out about each of the classes and their skills:

What are the Passives?

Passives are independent of skills and allow players to augment their overall character by improving specific stats.

Where is Diablo 4 Set? - The Diablo 4 Game World

Players of previous games in the franchise will find themselves back in the world of Sanctuary, the physical realm of the Diablo universe.

Sanctuary
Sanctuary

Below is a map shown at BlizzCon 2019 highlighting the playable zones in the initial release of Diablo IV and compare with the above map for locations that are included and omitted.

Diablo Quick History

Created by the powerful race birthed from angels and demons, the Nephalem, it became their plane of existence. Sanctuary and the Nephalem spawned from the offspring of the demoness Lilith (see Diablo 4 cinematic trailer) and the archangel Inarius.

Sanctuary was under threat from the High Heavens and the Angiris Council who felt it was an abomination. Tyrael was to take the great armies of the High Heavens (also called the Heavenly Host) and destroy Sanctuary.

Uldyssian, who was once a simple farmer who discovered he had Nepahlim ancestry and set out to stop angels and demons from taking over Sanctuary, persuaded Tyrael that Sanctuary should remain unharmed. As Tyrael had the deciding vote within the  Angiris Council, the world of Sanctuary was allowed to survive.

After the existence of Sanctuary was secured, Tyrael was ordered by his fellow angels on many occasions not to interfere with the mortal world. He has often disobeyed, fearing that Sanctuary would otherwise fall into the hands of the Burning Hells (the home of all demons).

Diablo 4 Story

The story takes place years after the events of Diablo 3, and in this Diablo game, Lilith is the main protagonist, queen of the Succubi and creator of the world of Sanctuary with Inarius. With a power vacuum because of events in the previous games following the battle between the High Heavens and the Burning Hells, Lilith is now heading to Sanctuary to take control. Her arrival in the world can be seen in the announcement cinematic.

Diablo 4 Zones
Diablo 4 Zones

Following criticism from fans that Diablo 3 was not dark enough and had strayed from its roots of the first two games, Blizzard has stressed that Diablo IV’s Sanctuary will be a much darker and foreboding place.

Diablo 4 differs from the previous games as this time Blizzard is creating a world where players will seamlessly transition between the games five zones as they travel around Sanctuary. The play area will include the following five zones:

Diablo 4 will feature a day and night cycle, weather and random events. Once areas are completed in the campaign, players will be able to interact with other players as the zone becomes open and shared with other real players. Players will then be able to take part in world events

Is there a Map?

Yes there's an in-game map.

We have also created a web-based Diablo 4 interactive map for desktop and mobile devices to help players locate everything from quests to Statues of Lilith.

Can you overlay the map on the play screen so it's semi-transparent?

No, unlike previous game you cannot over-lay the in-game map while you play.

Will there be Mounts?

For the first time in a Diablo game, mounts will be available to players to help them traverse the game world. Players will also be able to customise mounts with armour and saddles. Items on the mount can also determine how it performs. Better armor for protection or an increase in speed are two ways in which they can be augmented according to Blizzard.

Mounts can take damage but when attacked the player will be knocked off the mount.

What is the Diablo 4 Campaign?

The Diablo 4 campaign will take place over five regions which are only a small section of Sanctuary, specifically the top right half of the eastern continent. Blizzard is promising a non-linear campaign which will allow players to decide how to progress the story and their characters.

Due to the freedom afforded by a non-linear campaign, the world will scale with a player’s level. Each area will have a base level and scale with the player upwards. Players will stop scaling after a certain level. Some areas will also scale so they are a few levels higher than your current level. Scaling will also be determined by the party leader when playing with others.

The game can also be completed without taking part in any of the new social activities that are being added to Diablo IV.

The campaign is expected to last about 30-40 hours of gameplay.

Can you skip the Campaign?

Yes, there is a skip campaign button on the main character menu but you have to have completed the campaign at least once to use it.

What are World Bosses?

Duriel
Duriel in Diablo 4

Now that the game has been designed with an open world in mind, Blizzard is introducing World Bosses. These bosses can appear anywhere in Sanctuary and are designed to be tackled by groups of players. Players in the game will be alerted to the appearance of a World Boss in the game world and can then decide whether to tackle it or not. Ashava was one such boss that was shown in the BlizzCon 2019 demo.

What type of Monsters will be in Diablo 4?

Blizzard will be bringing back the familiar Diablo monsters to Diablo IV such as skeletons, The Fallen, the Goatmen and more. Even the boss Duriel is being brought back. One new addition which was revealed in the Diablo Artbook is The Drowned who are undead living around the coastlines who drag their enemies into the sea.

Will there be Dungeons in Diablo 4?

The Diablo IV world will include many dungeons, said to be in the hundreds, that are private dungeons for that player/group. Players will make their way through each level of dungeon with no load times between dungeon levels. These dungeons will include random events and challenges so even though it may be the same dungeon location, it may play very differently from the time before.

What are Strongholds?

Strongholds are “strongholds of evil”. Players will have reclaim these areas from the forces of evil. Once reclaimed, strongholds can spawn NPCs such as blacksmiths and quest givers. Some dungeons will not be accessible until these Strongholds are liberated.

What is the Diablo 4 Endgame

Blizzard is introducing Dungeon Sigils for the endgame. These Sigils will randomly generate an endgame dungeon and Keys work with specific dungeons. Keys come with affixes that add mechanics to the dungeon and more than 100 are expected to be available to players. Item drop quality will also be dependent on the dungeon difficulty.

What is the Codex of Power?

The Codex of Power is a collection of Legendary Aspects. Completing Dungeons will unlock an Aspect from the Codex of Power.

What is the Renown System?

The Renown system is a way for characters to progress in the game boosting reputation in each of the game's five zones.

Blizzard has added a Renown system to the game to encourage players to explore the world of Sanctuary. The Renown rewards are an incentive to do so.

By completing objectives, players can earn Renown points in each zone of the zones.

Players will start the game with no Renown points, and through exploration and completion of tasks, Renown points are earned.

What Items will be in Diablo 4?

Diablo 3 was heavily criticised for its itemisation which was eventually improved with the Loot 2.0. Diablo 4 will introduce instanced loot which means that when loot drops, only you can see your items. Other players will only see it once you have picked it up and then dropped it.

As item quality increases, an item’s affixes will improve and will allow players to dip into areas of their talents that they may not have focused on in their talent tree. This will allow players to create more diverse character builds.

The top tier items are Legendary Items and only one can be equipped with 2 random modifiers and 1 Legendary modifier.

With the game so early in development, items are going to change and there have already been changes made since the BlizzCon 2019 reveal.

What Affixes are expected in Diablo 4?

Here are the changes we’re considering:

  • We’re increasing the total number of affixes on items, including Magic (Blue), Rare (Yellow), and Legendary (Orange). This should raise the overall importance of non-Legendary affixes on your character’s overall level of power.
  • We are also introducing three new stats:
    • Angelic Power, which increases the duration of all beneficial effects (like self-buffs or healing)
    • Demonic Power, which increases the duration of all negative effects (like debuffs or damage over time)
    • Ancestral Power, which increases the chance of on-hit effects (aka increased proc chance)

These new stats can appear as affixes, such as +15 Angelic Power. In addition to providing the above-stated benefit, we want these new stats to also act as pre-requisites for empowering certain other affixes. If you don’t have enough of a specific power, you can still equip the item, but you may not benefit from an affix linked to that power.

These additions are an example of how the development team is finetuning the items and affixes so that players have to decide whether a particular item is best suited to your build.

Will there be Runewords?

Runewords may return (although they were planned for Diablo 3 when it was announced but were axed. Watch this space). They will be made up of a prefix and suffix to give bonuses.

It's still not known if Runes and Runewords will make it into the final game as they have been absent from all developer updates since 2019. They may not make the final cut.

Game modes and mechanics

Blizzard is bringing a new and improved game engine to Diablo 4, and with it comes new game features and mechanics. Blizzard will retain the fluid combat from Diablo 3 but expect a few surprises.

What are the Difficulty Levels?

Diablo 4 had multiple difficulty levels but they are called World Tiers in this game. There are currently four World Tiers available.

How do you Respec?

Players will be able to Respec their skills for a price. The higher the level they are, the more expensive it becomes.

What happens when you die?

In Diablo 4, players will die and lose 10% durability on their gear and weapons each time. However if they are resurrected by another player there is no durability loss.

How does PvP work in Diablo 4?

Diablo players have been hankering for a solid PvP system in the franchise for a long time.  PvP was planned for Diablo 3 and demoed what looked like a decent arena system when Diablo 3 was announced. Unfortunately, that was scrapped and no full PvP mode was ever added.

In Diablo 4, PvP will feature in the game and the game has been designed with PvP in mind.

PvP areas are in the open world which you can walk into.  These are optional zones.

Players can collect Shards of Hatred from PvP. These objects are collected unpurified. These Shards of Hatred can be purified at an “event” and turned into currency which can be used for in-game gear and trophies. Other PvP players can kill you and take these purified shards from you.

PvP areas will have their own mounts and special items but these won’t be more powerful than mounts or items found outside the PvP zones.

Players can become a Vessel of Hatred. Other players will then be alerted to your presence. You will then need to survive other players.

Ears are collected in PvP but they are only trophies.

Will there be Hardcore?

Hardcore mode has been popular with Diablo players and it will be back in Diablo 4. Once you are dead, you are dead for good.

How Does PvP Hardcore work?

If you take a hardcore character into a PvP zone and die it is permadeath. You will lose the character forever.

What are Paragon Boards?

The Paragon Board is a new system being added to Diablo 4 to expand character customisation beyond a character's skills.

Players will unlock the Paragon Boards at level 50. Players will work their way from the centre of their class starting board outwards depending on what direction they want to take the character.

Can you Play Offline?

When Diablo 3 released, fans were not pleased that the game was online only even if they were playing solo. Diablo IV will work in the same way. You will need to be connected to the Internet. With Blizzard adding more social features inside the game, there is now more of a reason to make Diablo 4 online only. It is now a live service game.

Will there be Seasons in Diablo 4?

Diablo 4 will feature Seasons, a feature that has kept Diablo 3 players interested in the game long after they have completed the campaign. Blizzard will introduce and balance Legendary items based on what each Season brings. Blizzard may also introduce special events but much of what Seasons will include has yet to be revealed.

What Currencies will be in the game?

The main currency in Diablo 4 is gold. However, there are other "currencies" players will need to utilise for specific functions such as gambling and PvP rewards.

Will there be Crafting?

Diablo 4 will feature crafting and utilise multiple vendor types such as Blacksmith, Alechemist, and Occultist.

Will there be Voice Chat?

Yes, there is in-built voice chat.

Will there be Cinematics?

Yes, there are cinematics.

Will there be Trading?

Trading plays a part in Diablo 4 but trade is focused around consumable items and crafting materials that will bound on trade. Some items types will not be tradeable.

Are Addons or Mods allowed?

No addons/mods can be used in Diablo 4. The elective mode is as far as they want to go with user customisation.

What is the Open World?

The seamless world of Diablo gives Blizzard the ideal opportunity to bring players together with more social features. These will include Clans, voice chat, and Social Hubs,

Social hubs will include NPCs and you can meet other players to form a group or trade. Players will also be notified of World Events which they can rush to undertake should they desire.

Throughout the open world, players will also be alerted to events which will change with each Diablo 4 Season.

Will Diablo 4 be Pay to Win?

No. The game does include a shop but it sells purely cosmetic items that offer no power advantage to the player.
