Revision as of 13:54, 3 May 2024

Items (or Gear) are a huge part of building your character and supporting your particular set of skills, especially once you reach the endgame and you have finished leveling your skills and your Paragon Boards are well on their way to being finished.

The tiers of items progress as follows.

  • Normal: 1 modifier
  • Magic: 1 random modifier and can have socket
  • Rare: 2 extra random modifiers and can have socket
  • Legendary: 3 random modifiers and 1 Legendary modifier (aspect) and can have socket and bound
  • Unique: 4 affixes and 1 Unique modifier and can have socket and bound
  • Sacred - Item Power 625 - 750 - Drop in World Tier 3 and 4
  • Ancestral - Item power 780 - 925 - Drop in World Tier 4

Greater Affixes

Every time an Ancestral Legendary or Unique (including Uber Uniques) item drops in World Tier 3 or 4 its 3 or 4 Affixes have a chance to be a Greater Affix which is 1.5x more powerful than the maximum normal affix range.

These Greater Affixes can be further boosted via Masterworking. However, if you Enchant them at the Occultist they will just reroll in a regular affix range.

Item Modification

Four systems in Diablo 5 enable you to alter your items.

System Description Item Types Who Required
Aspects Add a Legendary Aspect to an item adding a unique power. Rare
Legendary
Occultist Crafting Materials
Enchanting Reroll a single affix on an item. Can be done repeatedly but only on the same affix. Legendary Occultist Crafting Materials
Masterworking Slightly upgrade all affixes on item up to 12 times. A single random affix massively buffed on the 4, 8 and 12th upgrade. Legendary
Unique
Blacksmith Crafting Materials
Unusual Materials
Socketing Add 1 or 2 sockets to an item to add Gems. Rare
Legendary
Unique
Jeweler Scattered Prism
Tempering Add 1 or 2 new Affixes to an item. Rare
Legendary
Blacksmith Crafting Materials

Masterworking

Masterworking enables you to increase all the affixes on your Legendary and Unique items up to 12 times. This includes any affixes added via Tempering or Enchanting and any Greater Affixes too. From materials gathered in The Pit you can visit the Blacksmith who will upgrade affixes by 5% however, upgrade numbers 4, 8 and 12 will give just a single affix a massive 25% boost.

Masterworking doesn't fail and it can be reset at any point, wiped clean, to begin again but the materials aren't refunded. As with any alterations to items Masterwoking renders the item account bound.

Core Augments Rogue Tempering Manual
Rogue Tempering Manual

Tempering

Tempering enables you to add up to 2 Affixes to Legendary and Rare items.

Manuals with a set of 4 or 5 Affix themed 'recipes' can be found throughout the world and once learned these will be stored in the Codex of Power in 1 of 6 categories so you can browse them at any point.

To Temper visit the Blacksmith to select which Manual has the Affix you want on the item and they will apply a random affix from that Manual.

1 Affix can be added to Sacred items and 2 to Ancestral. If adding 2 they must be from different manuals. Once your initial Affixes have been applied you can reroll Tempers another 5 times per item and once done that is it, the Tempers are set in stone. The item can not be reset like it can in Masterworking.

You can't Enchant a Tempered affix into another affix at the Occultist but they can be Masterworked boosting their stats even further.

Tempering never fails but it will bind the item to your account.

Item Quality & Affixes

As item quality increases, an item’s affixes will improve and will allow players to dip into areas of their talents that they may not have focused on in their talent tree. This will allow players to create more diverse character builds.

  • Magic: 1-2 Affixes
  • Rare: 2-6 extra random modifiers
  • Unique: 4 Fixed affixes and 1 class-specific
  • Legendary: 4 affixes and 1 Legendary modifier.

Legendary items have been designed to offer customised skills beyond the skill system.

Ancestral and Sacred Items

  • Sacred items only drop on World Tier 3.
  • Ancestral items only drop in World Tier 4.

Level Cap Changes

During Season 1 of Diablo 4, the level cap requirements were changed where Sacred items have a level requirement cap of 60 and Ancestral items have a level requirement CAP of 80. So items you find at level 100 will only require a level 80 character in order to equip[1].

Set Items Note

  • Set Item: Set items may appear at some point but they are not available at launch.
  • Ancient Set: Set items may appear at some point but they are not available at launch.

Additional Tier

It is also noted that there is one additional tier of gear that will unlock at the very highest difficulty of the game where there will be specific Uniques that will only drop at that level of difficulty. This is similar to Diablo 2's Death's Web or Tyrael's Might.

Aquiring items and Smart Loot

Diablo 4 loot drops are tied to the player, only you can see your Diablo 4 items that drop. Other players will only see it once you have picked it up and then dropped it.

Smart Loot is feature of Diablo 4. This means a higher percentage of drops will be specific to your class. This makes item farming more fruitful.

Affixes

Affixes (also known as Bonuses and Modifiers) are the special magical properties found on items in the Diablo games.

Understanding the Items and Tooltips

When viewing a tooltip it can be broken down into sections.

Item Power Section

Item Power is the range in which stats will roll on an item. As a player levels, they will see an increase in Item Power on their items. This increase also applies to affixes players will see on items. The more items power, the better the affix values.

Items also have Item Power breakpoints which are:

  • Level 0: 1 – 149
  • Level 1: 150 – 339
  • Level 2: 340 – 459
  • Level 3: 460 – 624
  • Level 4: 625 – 724
  • Level 5: 725+

Item Power can also be increased at the Blacksmith by upgrading Rare or Legendary items. Each upgrade adds +5 to the Item Power. This means a Rare item can have +15 (three upgrades) added to its Item Power and a Legendary +25 (five upgrades).

Base Characteristics Section

This section of the tooltip, which sits below the name and Item Power, are the base characteristics of the item. There is a dividing line on the tooltip to denote this section. These stats cannot be changed on that item, they are fixed.

Affixes Section

These are shown on the tooltip below the base characterstics and the dividing line. On Legendary items, this section will also show the Legensary Power in orange text.

Changing an Item's Affix

Affixes on items can be changed by the Occultist who can replace an affix on Magic, Rare, and Legendary items. The resulting value change is random and it may take some time re-rolling an affix to find something you really want.

Note: Prior to upgrading a Rare item to a legendary, you could re-roll it's affix at the Occultist before making the upgrade with a Legendary Aspect to make sure the upgraded item has the best possible stats.

Legendary Items

Legendary items are coloured orange as they were in Diablo 3. Most characters will end up wearing legendary and other items as they level up. This is the top tier currently in the game.

In Diablo 4, some Legendary items will are able to modify skills which add more diversity to character builds. They can also give a player addtional skills that they have not invested a skill point in.

It's worth noting that should you have two Legendary items with the same affix, the stats won't stack, the one with the best roll will be the one in effect.

Legendary Items are linked to Legendary Aspects, and Aspect is the just another name for the Legensary Power displayed on the tooltip in orange text.

Are There Set Items?

No. Set items are not something that has been added in Diablo 4.

Set could also hold equivalent power to Legendary items when they are added to the game in the future if the development team deem them necessary.

Removed Systems

Runes and Runewords

Runewords proved highly popular in Diablo II. Runewords were a way for players to combine runes with items to give an item exceptional attributes. In Diablo II there was a total of 78 different runewords that could be used on basic grey items. Blizzard had planned for runewords in Diablo III but the idea was dropped during development at the time citing that “led to a lack of equipment variety”. Blizzard has not decided whether they will added back into Diablo 4 after they appered in early development updates.

Ancient Legendaries Removed

Diablo IV will dispense with Ancient Legendaries as highlighted in the Systems Design update. The changes are described as follows and note that they are being replaced by a “new types of consumable item”.

We will be introducing a new type of consumable item (which we haven’t yet named). This item would be earned by killing monsters, just like other items. It would have one random Legendary affix on it, drops only in the late endgame, and can be used to apply that affix to any non-Legendary item.

This means a few things:

  • We create an “elective mode for items” that is experienced after players have had time to experience Rare and Legendary items normally, as well as familiarized themselves with a variety of affixes
  • This adds a way to introduce new methods of play without adding even more power to endgame items
  • Rare items with the best affixes on them are always useful and retain value

Mythic Items Removed

In the December 2020 developer update, Blizzard revealed they were removing Mythic items for the following reason: [2]

We still like the idea of Mythic items, but we don’t want to create an item quality that invalidates all others, so they’re out for now. One of the things we loved most about them was the promise of getting random legendary powers on an item, so we folded that into our baseline legendary design.
