Gems

Gems can be socketed into armor, weapons or jewelry to add additional stats depending on their tier (quality/grade). Your main source of gems is drops from enemies but you can also get them from chests, part of a reward cache or harvested from ore nodes found formed on the ground.

There are 7 types of gems:

They come in 5 grades of quality:

Chipped
Normal
Flawless
Royal
Grand

Gem fragments found as loot can be combined to create whole gems at the Jewelers. They are also used by the Alchemist to craft Elixirs and Incense.

Using Gems

Certain items can come with 1 to 2 sockets.

However, the Jeweler can also add sockets to an item for gold and Scattered Prisms. Scattered Prisms are very difficult to find and your best bet to finding them is World Bosses, next would be the elusive Treasure Goblin and the other is salvaging Legendary items at the Blacksmith.

Once socketed a gem can be unsocketed from an item by the Jeweler for gold. This is useful when you wish to stop using an item or if you are able to upgrade the gem.

Each class will benefit more from some gems than others and in the table below the effects of each gem type on particular types of gear are highlighted.

Whether it's resistances, more damage or increased Life, choosing your gear combination coupled with slotted gems can greatly enhance your chosen build. How you approach this depends on your play style, the situation you are trying to overcome, and of course, your gear.
