Affixes (also known as Properties, Bonuses or Modifiers) are the special magical properties found on all items in the Diablo games. They fall into one of three categories:
- Offensive (i.e Attack Speed, Critical Strike Chance)
- Defensive (i.e Damage Reduction, Fire Resistance)
- Utility (i.e Life Regen while not damaged recently, Cooldown Reduction)
Each item can roll with certain affixes and their statistics will be within a set range. For example, Amulets can roll with Cooldown Reduction, extra Damage and Movement Speed properties but Rings never can. Helms can roll with Barrier Generation but Boots never can.
This is the case for all items but each type can appear with a certain number of affixes:
- Common: 1 affix
- Magic: 1 to 2 affixes
- Rare: 2 affixes
- Legendary: 3 affixes and 1 Legendary modifier (aspect)
- Unique: 4 affixes and 1 Unique modifier
Additionally, certain affixes useful to an individual class can roll on items. For example, Amulets can roll with plus to ranks in the Conjuration Mastery Passive to benefit the Sorcerer but if you're playing a Druid Amulets can roll with plus to your Companion Skills Damage.
Improving an Item's Affixes
As well as via skills you can improve the affixes of an item in 4 ways.

2. You can imprint a Legendary Aspect onto the Magic, Rare or Legendary item. Through the Codex of Power or from the (Legendary) Aspects you have extracted from other Legendary items you can imprint a Legendary Aspect onto the item, adding that property.
3. If the item has a socket you can add a gem or skull to apply an affix to the item. If it doesn't have a socket you can add a socket at the Jewelers.
