Gargoyle

From Diablo 2 Wiki
D1-mon-gargoyles.jpg

Gargoyles are Demons.

These monsters are an interesting case. They sit like statues until a character or golem comes close enough to activate them, or they are hit by a projectile of some type, at which point they rise up and flap around, attacking in melee style. They can be annoying for melee fighters, but are quite easy for Rogues, Mages and others with ranged attacks since they sit perfectly still until they are hit, and most attackers can bring enough damage to kill the gargoyle without it ever moving from that spot.

In larger groups such as a boss pack when all the gargoyles are active at once, they can be much harder to deal with. Damaged gargoyles sit back down in stone form and regenerate their hit points at a high rate while seated. If a player doesn't keep attacking a given gargoyle, it will return to full strength in short order, and it can be impossible to keep hitting a fleeing gargoyle when it flies into an oncoming boss pack.

All gargoyles on a level will be active (flying around restlessly, but without a target until a character enters their sight range) if the character leaves that level, then returns to it in the same game.
