I'll post a more fulsome update when I get the chance, but Jin-qua just ticked 87 last night. He made Guardian - at first I was going to save the Ancients until much later, but then I decided I wanted to kill Hell Baal to open up the Cow runs. He's extremely rune poor (the highest I've had drop so far is a Lem from Hell Hellforge), but he has actually found 4/5 of the Trang's set - he's just missing the Cantor Trophy, of all things (the Troll Belt dropped the other day in the Ancient Tunnels). Any thoughts as to where the best place to find Trang's Wing might be? I'm loathe to try and reroll a good LK map because the Tunnels entrance is right next to the Lost City waypoint, and the Stones are right next to the Stony Field waypoint....

Act 1 appears to be the best place for a Cantor Trophy (base) to drop in Hell difficulty, and Hell Mephisto for the set item.
@Foghorn Leghorn it really depends on what your goal is. If you're looking to make progress towards 99, the only priority should be Enigma. TO set and maps like cows or AT don't really matter honestly. If you want to take a break from LK and do some MF running, you can always go to Pindle, he's likely the most efficient MF target anyway. As for XP, you're likely best off to just hit Baal waves anyway. The alternative for later sub-98 XP gain is Pit running with PN spec, but doesn't make much sense without Enigma either.
Thanks, Friiser. It looks like the Cow King has a relatively good drop chance too, so might try and set up a milk run of runs to keep things interesting.
Thanks for the tips, ffs. In case I didn't mention it earlier, Jin-qua is a HC Fishymancer, so he's never going to be the fastest runner anyway. And with that in mind, I have one goal in my D2R existence that will also slow me down - to be Enigma-free. It obviously won't be a popular goal by any stretch, but it is the way I like to play. Also, being HC I get antsy about just teleporting all over the place willy-nilly, and my reactions are starting to slow down a tad as I age (I'm turning 50 next year). But I'll never divert from the rush of HC, so I've come to terms with knowing that this journey will take longer.

Just had a look at my Pally CS numbers which should be in a similar ballpark, seems you're comfortably on track for sub 200... could even end up at something like 180-190h if you manage to go without deaths. What's your projected time to 98 based on your CS numbers, assuming no deaths?

@ffs I think I’m behind a few hours, actually. Gotta remember I’m still using 2x Spirit/Stealth so I’m assuming (could just be my pessimistic ass) unless I get lucky soon, it’ll be really fucking close even with no deaths. Also gotta consider without rune luck I probably won’t do Nihlathak. There’s still a lot of CS to go but geez has rune drops been non existent. I guess I got my karma from getting the lucky Ohm early. Griffon’s is haha so prob have to do fire if I do go Nihlathak.
E: was thinking I had Griffon’s from the start of Nihlathak for Sophie but actually ran CM/Shako in the beginning and it was fine so just need Infinity/Arach/SotV/NP and an amulet
Also worth noting potential time saves already equal to 5+ hours (1 hour save if I had like world record speedrun times getting to Hell farm, possibly another hour at Pindle instead of AT if you luck out with CtA runes, 3+ hours at Countess, another hour+ in CS without the 2 deaths.)

As I mentioned in my intro, I've been very inspired by all of you and wanted to de-lurk in part to officially enter the untwinked 99er I began for this challenge almost a year and a half ago. This day has been a long time coming and I’m excited to finally join you all in this adventure!
In short, Ledyne is a blizzard sorceress who just hit level 93. Cold sorceresses are nothing new to this thread, so, to spice things up a little, I hope for her stay pure cold from now through 99. So far, I have been alternating between Pindle, AT, LK, and Chaos runs. At present, I am back to LK runs to get the last runes for my HotO and CtA. With the runes I have, anything Pul to Ohm would allow me to make both of them. Then I plan to shift to the Chaos Sanctuary for some more serious leveling.
Little details: She will be SC with extended stash. I made her in 1.14d and have switched over to D2R. I will not be using Anni or Torch just to stick to the way I envisioned her journey (not that solo torch farming is very easy on a sorceress anyway!). To date, I’ve logged nearly 104 hours, 84 deaths, 1096 total S/Us, and 333 grailers, recorded meticulously of course. I first saw this thread back in 2019 and planned for many months to participate. I finally created Ledyne on the beautiful rainy morning of June 18th, 2020. I had just received my score report for the most intimidating and career-limiting set of board exams US medical students face (the USMLE Step 1). I scored well, but had long hoped to score higher, leading to a silly self-pity that only Diablo could dispel. That morning, I felt like going back to my favorite character type in D2, the cold sorceress. I named her Ledyne (leh-DEE-neh), a play on the Lithuanian word for ice. I determined from the start that she would stay untwinked and quickly felt she was the one I would take to 99. Despite the clear intent for her to journey to 99 as pure cold, she started out speedrun style with charged bolt and nova before respecing sometime after Normal.
She ran the Countess for a Stealth, finished normal in a few hours, and switched to Frozen Orb at level 30. She quickly made an insight scythe in NM Act 1 and teleported her way to Act 5 Hell over a few long play sessions. There were some 60 deaths in the playthrough to that point, mostly in the same few situations where I really should have just exited and tried again.
She popped back to NM and did some Baal runs until level 75, followed by some p7-8 Mausoleum runs in Hell, as these felt incredibly safe and doable for a cold sorc. I was hoping for a white/socketed monarch or other essentials to drop. The drops did not deliver, but the mausoleum proved fruitful experience-wise and she hit 85 before transitioning to Pindle. She found P7 Pindle to be a good compromise between safety and efficiency with trash gear and easily hit level 87.
At this point, Ledyne’s best items were a Spirit sword and stealth. 530 Mephisto runs netted her an Occy, Arachs, Snowclash, War Travs, several Vipermagi’s, and a few firsts in my D2 career: HoZ, Andy’s, Gheed’s, a Rainbow Facet (a low poison roll), even a Highlord’s as part of a quadruple unique drop. Still no Shako, but she hit level 88 feeling very safe under her mid-roll Rockstopper.
She then had a bit of a lucky streak: two AT runs done on a whim dropped her a white monarch! The cube recipe gave it 4 sockets, and her new Spirit rolled 35 FCR on the first try. She's had some good rune luck throughout, pulling two Vex runes early on, one from LK, and the other more miraculously off the Countess. She has found several others Pul-Gul, mostly in LK.

Granted without Infinity I have no idea how run times will look like at Nihl, but I'd be surprised if Light or alternatively Fire Sorc there wouldn't outperform other options like Diablo or Baal still. Also still some CS running left and chances are you'll farm Infinity in time.
My Pally took ~75 hrs for 98-99 (at least with Infinity your Sorc is likely faster) and ~40h for 97-98 in CS (undergeared Sorc may be a little slower but not by much). So assuming ~110-120h at most for the last two levels, I figured you should be on track to finish sub 200h.

@ffs P1/P7 Diablo with a nice shrine feed is the alternative, yes. I’m most worried about 96-98 undergeared but we’ll see how exp/hour turns out and if I can squeeze a few drops.

IMO the "needed" amount is 0... although it should be said that others felt differently about this. I included everything from no iPDR gear to 40-50 iPDR across my three 99ers for Nihl running.
One thing is for sure and that's no amount will allow you to actually tank viper clouds. It's really only about whether you extend your S&E reaction window by a split second or so. For particularly ugly spawns/rolls it could be an improvement of something like 0.2s to 0.3s after a big screw-up, such as landing in multiple clouds when Amp'ed and/or some Might/Fana roll being present.
I made it a habit to literally hover over the ESC key as soon as I'm at his platform when Vipers are around. With that approach iPDR offers essentially nothing, as I could easily S&E with the game pausing before the missiles even reached me and triggered the clouds.
In the end it also depends on the other gear/build and how much of a compromise you have to make to include PDR gear. For example many classes want to Nature's Peace anyway and that has some iPDR, but if you plan to use DS and don't want to lose corpses I really wouldn't worry about it.
Big life bulb + being ready to S&E = win.

I'm feeling a bit unlucky here, so I'm officially complaining and hoping for better in the next few thousand runs. On the positive side I have the runes for a CtA roll and Fortitude, which is a step in the right direction.

Raven Eye - Rare Jewel with 26% LR and -15% Req. Hopefully I can find Medusa's Gaze, this will be going into it.
I also have a rack that with certain monsters around it drops Monarchs, but is very unstable. Managed to get two plain ones out of it, one got lucky with the cube.

I dropped a few traps because I was annoyed with some vultures, and the rack in the hut dropped a Thresher. With a bit of experimenting I found three traps in an empty hut meant Threshers dropped consistently. With a bit of cubing I now have two 4os Ethereal Threshers. One has Insight in it, one waits...I also have a rack that with certain monsters around it drops Monarchs, but is very unstable. Managed to get two plain ones out of it, one got lucky with the cube.

Let me know if the complaining helps at all. I've done somewhere around 4,000 LK runs in my lifetime, and have never found a Sur or a Ber, so I have a lot of pent up vitriol to release.

@maxicek - Frustrating about the runes, but nonetheless a nice haul so far in LK, especially on those Threshers. One of the most irritating parts of this challenge is getting runes before bases, so it's a nice load off to have those in waiting already. Keep it up!
As for Vipers and PDR, I subscribed pretty much entirely to this viewpoint:
Well, with Eleanor I didn't have much life (~2k iirc, but I really don't recommend that), but with Klaus and Stevesy I was above 5 and 6k, respectively. I will add in one extra recommendation, especially for casters: DELIRIUM (on the merc, of course). Confused Vipers = harmless Vipers, and it procs extremely consistently and quickly down there.
A quick and merciless trigger finger on S+E is your absolute best friend. The best thing I ever did for myself was to get it through my skull that (for Nihlathak running) abandoning dangerous runs is ALWAYS the best play.
Even in SC a death means hours of lost gameplay, especially if you can't get your body back (which is likely for Nihl runs). I seriously doubt you'd be abandoning enough runs to match the time lost, so cut your losses and stay alive.
For casters especially, gameplay is also a big part of it. Once you figure out where the good landing spots are down there, you can very consistently be completely out of trouble once your position is established. Even with Eleanor at ~2k health I was rarely in a lot of trouble, since the merc bolts away from you right when you land, and as long as you're not moving (which you shouldn't be), the clouds are not insta-kill.
After all that you just have to be careful not to tele through a crazy-unfortunately-modded pack, and be ready to quickly hit Esc when you inevitably do just that.
Nihl runs seem very scary, and they most certainly ARE scary at first. Once you are used to them with your character though, they become quite predictable and the dangers are usually very easily and quickly identifiable, and therefore avoidable.

I’m planning on going for an untwinked Torch and Anni, so Nihil is on the list soon after Enigma, as well as endgame. That is one of the reasons I decided to go Kick Trap.
