Please meet Ric, an untwinked 99er Necromancer. Following HelpYourself, an untwinked 99er Sorc I finished earlier this year, he is my second untwinked 99er, the 12th completed character in the untwinked 99er challenge, and AFAIK the SPF's first untwinked 99er Necro.

With gear and drops out of the way, this is the brief version (well, sort of) of his journey:

The Beginning

I first considered taking a Necro into the 99er challenge in November 2017. My Sorc was mid-90s at the time and I thought it would be nice to have another character to go back to for a change of scenery. I can't remember exactly whether I named him after the mad scientist vibe from Rick and Morty or after the Walking Dead character (because, you know, dead stuff). What I do know is that his journey started with a typo – I really meant to call him "Rick". :rolleyes: But 99 takes a long time, and there was no time to lose, so instead of creating another Necro and adding a "k", I went on to charge into the Blood Moor. ;)

The plan from the outset was to go with a Summoner build at first, given the ideal gear mainly consists of relatively common S&Us and runewords, which could all be farmed rather reliably. He pretty much followed the plan the whole way and was played as a Summoner until 97.

I don't remember much from the initial playthrough as he advanced to his first pit stop in Hell LK, which is when I entered him into the 99er thread. His first goal was to farm Enigma of course, and with an early Ber drop before even having a Harmony bow, he was off to a quick start. He had enough to make his first CtA (+3 BO) shortly after. Some dry spells followed, but he made consistent progress towards Enigma, with further rune drops reported here and here. I mostly focused on my Sorc at the time, so progress was slow in the beginning. But following a lucky streak and a funny "long distance battle" with @PhineasB (who had started running LK for Enigma with his Necro as well), he had assembled the ingredients for the ultimate game changer in February 2018, and made his Enigma.

He then went for a mix of Pit, Pindle, Meph and LK runs in order to get a few key pieces of S&Us. Around this time he also made an eth bugged Fortitude, considerably increasing his overall power due to the importance of the Merc setup for basically every Necro. Around this time a crazy thing happened when within ~6 hours of Pit running he found two Zods (and also made his Beast).

Getting the Missing Items & Baal Boredom

When @Grape hosted the 2018 RFL, I chose to run with Ric for two rounds of the tournament instead of going with more optimized rune finding characters. I was hoping to farm Infinity, the last major runeword he needed at the time. This worked out almost perfectly, collecting a suitable base and the runes for Infinity except for one Sur from running Cows during the first round of the RFL. Updates and non-qualifier drops posted here and here, including a +2 Necro/10 FCR craft amulet that he used for most of the time until 99. After the first RFL round ended, he went back to LK and quickly got the last Sur to make Infinity. The remaining core items he was looking for were Arachnid Mesh and Andy's Visage for Merc, so I continued running the Pit with him for the last RFL round in hopes of getting them. Alas, while finding a lot of stuff (think: MFO garbage), he was out of luck with these particular items. After RFL, he switched back and forth between Pit runs and Baal waves, including Pindleskin after raising the army there, until hitting 95.

At 95 it became increasingly hard to justify running the Pit any longer in terms of XP. While I still mixed things up from time to time, I almost exclusively moved to Baal waves. After a few XP gain tests, it turned out that Ventar runs were most efficient at first. He made his way to 96 this way and then started to include Baal. At this point, Baal runs were driving me almost crazy (IMO this is really the dullest experience in D2, I'd take LK over this any time ;)).

I was still missing Arachnid Mesh and Andy's Visage – both of which I considered crucial in increasing XP gain efficiency in later stages. So at one point I decided to take a welcome break from Baal runs and go on a killing spree against Hell Mephisto. After ~800 runs he finally had both items, plus his first eth Titan's – an item I've been hoping to get for a long time (he would later get a second one from Pindle). He then went back to Baal, having his core gear assembled. Shortly after he socketed the Andy's with an IAS/28 ED jewel and made a Hoto (though not using it yet), while making his way to 97.

The Final Grind

I was constantly testing all sorts of runs in hopes of not having to run Baal. After simulating different approaches with twinked Necros, it turned out that running Nihlathak provided pretty much the same XP gain as Baal for 97-98. However, it made sense to stick with Baal for safety reasons. While I continued running Baal until 97.15 because of that, I suddenly decided I've had enough and switched to Nihlathak. What I found the most effective Necro strategy against Nihlathak turned out to be quite simple: Have a strong Merc, spam CE and don't die. :p Despite having found only one P&B skiller at the time, I respec'ed to PN which I found was the way to go (at least without many skillers). With his new target providing refreshed motiviation, Ric quickly moved onwards to 97.3 and 97.5, i.a. picking up a Cham along the way.

When MFO came around, he went on a break for a while until I picked him up again in October, moving to 97.7. He was welcomed back by Nihl with these nice drops (including Mang Song's Lesson) and more goodies to follow.

Soon afterwards he hit 98, as good drops kept coming, including a perfect 45 life Burning GC and his first +1 skill ring with BKWB. While he was far away from breaking any XP gain records (in particular in comparison to my previous character getting some ~4.2-4.5m XP/h), I was nonetheless quite happy with his pace at ~3.4-3.5m XP/h when I ran the numbers and recorded a few runs:


As far as safety goes, he did have a number of NDEs, but got away by the skin of his teeth most of the time. There were two deaths for 98-99. One I'm still not sure how it happened (likely missed the BO cast), and the second one in classic Nihl running fashion, namely courtesy of those "working as intended" Viper clouds. At least he recovered the corpse in both instances, and picked up a second P&B skiller and a few other things (as well as these).

In November I hosted a little MF tourney and participated with Ric to get him on track to finish this year. Despite the second death occurring during the tourney, he did fine overall and managed to get to 98.5, with his tournament haul not being too shabby either, i.a. picking up a 30@ Mara's. Things became more and more hectic at work towards the end of the year with little time to play D2. Still I managed to squeeze in a few runs here and there. Slowly progressing, Ric hit 98.66 and 98.8, and in the meantime improving to a +4 BO CtA with his third try. The last few weeks in December though, RL was extremely busy, and he had to wait for the holidays to hit 98.9 a few days ago. I took a few breaks in between all that holiday feasting to put in the last ~10 hours over the last few days: He hit 99 today with a very strong finish in terms of drops, including a perfect 15 IAS/30 FR RJoF, the elusive Astreon's Iron Ward (overall grailer, putting me at -1 with Tyrael's remaining) and his second BKWB.

The Future

Same as with my Sorc, Ric will likely stay untwinked and at the very least serve as my go-to Fishymancer for testing purposes. :) While I started a third character in the 99er challenge, a "strictly melee" Paladin currently in Normal, making 99 with Ric will probably be my last major D2 project for quite a while. I decided to quit my job a few months back and will now take it easy for a while, fly out to sunny places to go backpacking until starting a new job in spring. :p For better or worse, I doubt I will have any opportunity (or desire even) to play until then.

There are one or two Mat/Pat projects on my list that I hope to wrap up before I leave. In any case, I'm sure I'll be back at some point! :)
