1k Many Ways - Variety Grailing

@ffs i can barely find time to play on my own schedule, let alone sync up with others 😅. But does sound like fun. Why don't you guys pvp on D2R?
Make a couple of chars and we can see what works! On weekends we usually managed to find times that worked across various time zones. Maybe we can lure out a couple of other players again. :)

~~~Pitfight: Fova Sorceress~~~
Let's wrap this pitfight mini-series up!
Character: Fireball/Nova Sorceress
Area: The Pit
Playersetting: 1
MF: 632*
Runs: 500
Character Overview
Fireball everything except use nova to mop up devilkins. Tons of fun, definitely my best and favorite of these pitsorcs, though I'd probably still prefer to run bomber necro or easyzerker here. You'll notice the asterisk in the mf description above. Let me explain (long story)...
I had been looking forward to starting this character. I fully expected her to have the fastest clear speed of the three builds in this pitfight series, and since she uses shako instead of griffons, she should have more mf. So I respec'd and did a couple of runs with standard hoto/spirit setup with high 500's mf, and I immediately see that this won't work. Mana issues galore. I could be forgiven for not foreseeing this since I love playing my fb/blizz in AT with a similar setup with no mana problems. But nova is much more mana hungry than blizzard and pit runs are longer than AT runs.
Ok no problem, the rich man's insight (phoenix) it is. Good for a fb main build anyways. I slap on phoenix and ist wizzy, a combo I've used to great effect in AT, and still high 500s mf. But I immediately notice the fireballs feel MUCH less powerful and the clear speed is significantly slower.
Ok hoto and phoenix it is. Low 500s mf. More lame, but it'll do. Nope! Tons and tons of fhr lock issues. Again never have this problem in AT, but what can you do? I slapped a shael in shako and put 2 scs with fhr in the inventory. Which brought me to 486 mf. Lame.
So I start doing the runs, and at first this build feels like things are just too hectic in pits. Not really sure why, just always taking a lot of dmg and not running smoothly. Still fastest clearer of the sorcs (by a small margin) but I'd rather run es/nova despite the slow archers. This was a bit disappointing to me since I wanted to love this build. But magically about 200 runs in, I started getting better at the build and she started feeling great. I'd probably still rather run a bomber necro or easyzerker, but she turned out to be really fun.
Ok story's not over. I do 400 runs, and then I talk to my old buddy twitch streamer enpherno about the build. And he had some interesting ideas. He mained nova and only fireballed archers, whereas I mained fireball and only nova'd devilkins. I said how do you not have to drink 3 pots every run? His solution was to
1. Run oculus for the 5mpk
2. Dump ~100 points in to energy (gasp)
And other than that, running the standard fare spirit shako build I initially started with.
Well of course I had to try this before the set was over, so I burned some tokens. I started by maxing nova and light mastery and optimizing the rest in the fireball tree and trying maining nova. I did the next 50 runs like this, with ist'd occy, and had 1200 mana and 1700-1800 hp after dumping a bit less than 100 points into energy. But I definitely still had some mana issues. So I ended up running silks and soj to get 1400 mana and 10mpk. This worked fine on the mana management side now and it was a good character to play with 555mf. Definitely an improvement.
However I thought that maining fireball would give me better clear speed. So I respec'd once more to my original skill distribution (12 hard points in light mastery, max nova, as described below), and found that I didn't need silks or soj when maining fireball. I had to use a fun little res/mf rare ring over nagel and trangs over magefist to get my cold and light res to about 60. I was taking a lot of dmg till I did that despite conventional wisdom being you don't need res in the pits. Also, I am usually an occy hater. But I hate mana issues even more, and it must not have slowed me down over the original hoto/phoenix setup, because I had my fastest set of 50 runs for the last 50.
So anyways, I'd certainly recommend the build I ran in the end with 632mf, and since it exhibits the characters potential more, I'll pretend I had 632mf throughout this set in the efficiency data.
Sample Runs and Gameplay
Gear
Helm - Shako (ist)
Amulet - 2sorc/6fcr/25mf/27 lres
Weapon - Oculus (ist)
Body - Enigma
Shield - Spirit
Swap - Cta/Spirit
Gloves - Trangs
Ring 1 - Nagel
Ring 2 - 11mf + cold, light, fire res
Belt - Arachnid Mesh
Boots - War Travs
Charms - 40 gheeds, mf scs
Merc - Defiance with Andy's (cham), Fort, Infinity
Build is...
Stats: str for gear, points in energy till 1200 mana after bo, rest in vita
Skills: max nova, 12 hard points light mastery, 1 pt wonders, optimize points in fire tree for fb dmg (for me was max fb, max fire bolt, and then 2 more points in meteor than fire mastery)
Map
Same map I rolled for in the nova set. The long term boss average seems to be even better than it initially seemed. It averaged 8.46 bosses over the whole set. I'm starting to think 5 tile linear maps are often the way to go. 4 tile linear that spawn 8+ exist and are probably better, but I find they usually spawn more like 7.6 for me. So maybe the 5th tile helps a lot.
Efficiency
Like all fast pit builds, she suffers from some serious s/e time, but not too too bad. Probably an average of 3s. Here were my efficiency metrics across different periods of the set.
Code:
Runs       Setup           Main Skill   MF    Boss/Run   Runtime   Adjeff
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
1-100      hoto/phoenix    fireball     486    8.51       69.8     3.09
101-200    hoto/phoenix    fireball     486    8.61       65.2     2.86
201-300    hoto/phoenix    fireball     486    8.37       63.2     2.85
301-400    hoto/phoenix    fireball     486    8.43       60.4     2.70
401-450    occy/spirit     nova         555    8.30       61.4     2.72
451-500    occy/spirit     fireball     632    8.47       59.8     2.53
The average for the set was 8.46 bosses, 63.83s runs and, pretending I ran the 632mf setup the whole time, 2.70 adjeff (2.7 x 300 = 810 hour per tyraels). Thats about 2.78 adjeff using the old counting method.
I really like this project. Might go for something similar at some point.
It averaged 8.46 bosses over the whole set. I'm starting to think 5 tile linear maps are often the way to go. 4 tile linear that spawn 8+ exist and are probably better, but I find they usually spawn more like 7.6 for me. So maybe the 5th tile helps a lot.
… but I hate zig-zag layouts such as in your map :) to me these always felt “slow” despite being technically linear. But it’s a matter of taste/adjustment perhaps.
Fully agree 5 tile maps can be amazing and many 4 tile maps (even with great layouts) are worse due to not “maxing out” on bosses in lvl 1. As you said, 4 tile maps packed with density (which do get up to 8 bosses frequently in lvl 1) are of course best, but hard to find.
My MFO runs with Necro were on a 5 tile map that I wouldn’t consider rerolling any time soon: Lvl 1 with open tiles & easy autopilot layout (one left turn that’s it), high density regularly maxing out on boss packs, big devilkin camp too, and great lvl 2 with 3 packs normally and 4 packs also relatively common.
@ffs Awesome, I would love to see it! My mission with this thread was/is
  1. Make grail progress
  2. See rough ideas of what grailing with each class would look like
  3. Find as many sub 3ish adjeff builds/runs as possible
I'm sure you could do a lot better than my adjeff's on a lot of these. IIRC your p5 wind druid was doing AT runs about as fast as my p1 guy.
On the map, aren't you the guy who said something like "I don't care if my map is shaped like a & if the density is high enough"? :p I'll have to find that quote. No idea why I remember it.
But in general I agree, I used to say I favored simple 4 tile linear maps even if the boss count was lowish for ease of use, but I guess you get used to it because the zig zag didn't end up bothering me at all in the end.
I know gripphons pit map was 5 tile linear (and pretty darn straight). I think ResTTe and Fabian had 4 tile ones but not 100%.
Edit: Lol found it immediately LINK
~~~Easyzerker~~~
Character: No swap pitzerker
Area: Pits
Playersetting: 1
MF: 513
Runs: 500

Character Overview
This is a repost of the 500 runs I did for the MFO, so sorry if you've already read it, but I wanted this guy to have a set here! I was loving this character before my hiatus but never completed a set with him to post. I hate weapon swapping on a pitzerker so I tried to see if I could build him without it. Works excellent! I sometimes called him the easyzerker, sometimes the lazyzerker, but I don't feel he deserves the name lazy when he outstrips a singer by a mile :p. In fact, before my hiatus, I was getting better efficiency with him (through improved runtimes) than with my conventional zerker. If you are really good at pitzerker, this probably wont be the case, due to the delay between when you kill a monster and when that monster become horkable.

Sample Runs and Gameplay

I have no idea how guys like ffs and ResTTe do it. By the end, I felt like I was blazing fast, wasting zero time in the last 100 runs, and my runs are about 10s slower, with like 0.8 fewer bosspacks per run, and with no weapon swapping. Respect.

Gear
Helm - Shako cham
Amulet - highlords
Weapon - 394 grief
Body - Enigma
Shield - Ist wizardspike
Gloves - Trangs
Ring1 - fcr/mf
Ring2 - fcr/mf
Belt - Arach
Boots - Travs
Charms - Gheeds and mf (mana is nice too)
Swap - dual hoto for higher bo, but can be anything
Merc - Insight, treachery, andys for fast might aura

Regular pitzerker skills and stats, max vita, 20 in zerk, howl, weapon mastery, find item (I'm still in 1.14 so no find potion), 1 point wonders, rest in shout.

I think my setup is best: cham shako, highlords, trangs gloves. But you can also swap to a 15 fcr amulet and use ias/mf gloves for potentially higher mf at the expense of a smidge of speed (from deadly strike). And finally if your grief happened to roll 37+ ias, you can cheap out of the cham shako and run ias jewel in shako, trangs belt, and 15+ fcr amulet. Aside from those 3 you'd have to run a 2/20 circlet or griffons...

Or I'm sure there are plenty of good 63 fcr options. In fact, I do often accidentally tele once past a boss pack and have to tele back. Maybe 63 fcr wouldn't slow me down much at all. But I love fast tele. Anyways he's a great character and everyone should try him out. Better and more fun than singer for sure.

Map
Map is nothing special. Rolled it for this. A nice shape, but low boss packs. I decided to keep it after 2 blue sacred armors dropped in the first 200 runs. But they were the only ones that showed up :(.

Finds
CLa28bo.jpeg

Great set for finds. I won't list the number of eah rare item I have like usual, since I went out of order to keep the 3 pitfight characters together. Really I finished this set before I finished the fova set. Anyways, I was very happy with those results. Still no grailers of course.

Efficiency
I fought hard to get the avg runtime under 75s. Here's the efficiency data (all runs with 513mf and 54% hork).
Code:
Runs       Runtime   Bosses   Adjeff
--------------------------------------
Average    74.86     7.67     2.37
1-100      78.23     7.62     2.49
101-200    74.82     7.57     2.39
201-300    74.07     7.64     2.35
301-400    74.73     7.68     2.36
401-500    74.22     7.82     2.24
So with the old counting method, the average goes from 2.37 to about 2.44. I was going more in the 2.15ish range before my hitaus. Guess I'm a bit rusty. Would love to get sub 2 with this guy one day, but may have to "cheat" and buy d2r for some 75% FI action :p.

~~~Fringebuild: Ice Maiden~~~
Character: Freezing Arrow Amazon
Area: Ancient Tunnels
Playersetting: 1
MF: 462
Runs: 500
Character Overview
Now here's a proper fringebuild. I got this idea when I read somewhere about @zemaj playing a fishyzon with a cta bow. I thought hey that would be a good way to have a bowazon with a teleswap and not have to carry cta in the cube. Plus my experience with the p1 mf javazon was so poor that I thought this character might even be a candidate for best grailing amazon.
She has a lot of hurdles to overcome. First off in gear, you can just barrrrely squeeze in the ias, pierce, cbf, and fcr you need. Then the resistances are terrible, and finally the mana issues are insane. I first equipped all the gear and was literally having to pot after every pack. However, I then remembered my recent experience with the fova sorc, and burned a token, and went all out on fixing mana problems. 100 points in energy, as much plus mana on the gear as I could get, and silkweaves. It worked! I could then get through 2+ runs without pots, and a well outside the AT entrance gave me a way to top up before runs.
However, my resistances were like -40 all around. I would literally fire an arrow at horror mages and immediately start running away. So I decided to take away some of the mana stuff and improve my resistances up to about 40 light res, and about 0 cold res. This was a much better balance.
I was really happy I stuck i tout with the character. In the first 100 runs when I was running into all these issues, I thought about just scrapping the idea and moving on. But in the end, she was actually pretty fun to play.
Last couple of notes, I also did 100 runs with ice runeword and cta in inventory. Cant run an ice maiden and not try out ice. It felt great and was substantially fewer shots per pack. But the increased prebuff time (let alone annoyance) and decreased mf made it worse than cta bow. I also tried to include the time it takes to restock on arrows from charsi in the runtimes. And lastly, I was dumb and didn't have my mf charms with resistances on this character for the first half of the runs. So the charms in the video are not as good as they could be.
Sample Runs and Gameplay
Gear
Helm - Shako w/ ias/light res jewel
Amulet - 2/20 zon with res (you can run a 9fcr one with an fcr ring though)
Weapon - CTA stag bow (4bo)
Body - Enigma
Shield - I wish
Gloves - 2/20 bow skills with mana
Ring1 - resistances/mana/mf
Ring2 - Ravenfrost
Belt - Razortail
Boots - Res/mf rares
Charms - Gheeds and mf (mana is nice too)
Swap - wizzy and spirit for teleport
Merc - Infinity, fort, andys
Max freezing arrow and cold arrow, max exploding arrow and fire arrow to help with unbroken cold immunes. Rest into penetrate.
Map
Map is nothing special. But turned out to have a decent number of packs! Ignore two tiles, but one backtrack tile.
BygIpCy.jpeg
A bit of a dry set for finds, but got griz shield #6, wisp projector #3, and a rare sacred armor (only rare sacred ive found since starting back, zero sets, zero uniques).
Efficiency
Average runtime was 55.8s, with 5.98 average packs, for an adjeff of 3.56. Using the old counting method, thats about 3.67. So she beat the 3.92 of the p1 javazon!
However, since the java was on a super bad map, and I wasn't willing to use a tele swap for java (not to mention that the java is way easier to play), they're probably roughly equivalent. Would be interesting to try my noswap javazon with this cta bow on swap as a fishyzon in pits. That might be the best option for mf java, but I'll leave that for some other day.
@drmalawi that's actually already on the list! wanted to try him out in AT too. Ooh how was smiter? I thought about trying out smite or vengeance for p1 mf in AT but it sounded rough to me trying to target the boss without howl.
~~~The Druid Saga: Fissure Druid~~~
Character: Fissure Druid
Area: Ancient Tunnels
Playersetting: 1
MF: 513
Runs: 500

Character Overview
Reposting this one to the best of my memory since the post I made was wiped.

I enjoyed running fire druid in AT on p7 for mid 90s leveling much more than wind druid in pits. So I figured I'd give him a chance on p1 with an mf focus. It's not the best, but still enjoyable. Fissure seems to require a smidge of time to bring the enemies through which is fine on p7 but much slower than other builds on p1. And the invaders are just too dang slow. I started running with shako/phoenix but they were so slow that ravenlore with facet (-19 total) was definitely better.

I ran with 513mf with a wizspike setup, but I did do 50 runs with 4 more skills (hoto and a skiller), but couldn't really notice any runtime difference. I also dumped ~90 points into energy thinking I might try some non phoenix setup, but it became clear with the invaders that nothing else would be worth it, so you probably don't need nearly that much mana. Facet sword is ofc an interesting option too, but then fcr is poor and no cyclone armor on this guy, so res and mf would take a huge hit.

Lastly, I DO really like armageddon. I'd never maxed it before since I'd hear plenty of people say it's a useless skill, opting for points in oak sage instead. I decided on p1 that I wouldn't even put a point in oak since I don't want to waste time casting him (and I died a few times this set as a result) and went for armageddon. It definitely gets you random boss kills frequently and speeds up the runs.

The global cast delay after armageddon is super annoying. You can't fissure the first pack for what seems like ages. And I love firestorm, but since blizzard made it not spammable between fissures, it's nearly useless. I'm looking forward to getting d2r and reexperiencing the fire druid.

Oh and other last thing. Don't be like me. I was running a defiance merc because I forgot I had one from the last time I was running cows with this guy. A might merc would be much much better with the several unbreakable fire immune invaders. Alas, I wasn't going to roll away this map for one.

Sample Runs and Gameplay

Gear
Helm - Ravenlore facet (-19 total)
Amulet - 2/10 druid with 22mf
Weapon - Ist wizzy
Body - Enigma
Shield - Phoenix
Gloves - Magefist
Ring1 - Nagel
Ring2 - Nagel
Belt - Arachs
Boots - Travs
Charms - Gheeds and mf
Swap - cta and spirit
Merc - Infinity, fort, andys cham

Max fissure and all synergies and armageddon. I dumped ~90 points into energy, and you probably don't need to put any in there with phoenix, but I didn't test.

Map
Map is definitely pretty good. Initially I thought it was even better with no backtracking and was making the mistake of teleporting northwest first. But it became obvious from the boss count after 50 runs or so that I was loading in the chest pack early. So I started taking the route in the image below. That gives right at 6 bosses per run.

Finds
What an excellent set for finds. I think fire characters are lucky for me. A p1 fire AT sorc found my second tyraels-eligible unique sacred along with my first ravenlore and my second or third astreons. And doing the aforementioned p7 fissure druid AT runs to 95 found me my third (and last so far) tyraels-eligible uSA.

Grandfather #12, nightwings #6, shadow dancers #6, heavens light, sur rune!, javelin skiller with 4 to strength, and this big kahuna...

Stormlash #2... with 299ed! I had my d2 hiatus with having had 3 remaining grailers for quite a while: stormlash, fathom, and tyraels. Soon after starting back, I got a 294ed lash from baal with my javazon, and now this. Should run some stormlash frenzy barb or something. I also found my second ever schaeffers pre mfo, so a few fun frenzy barb options.

The sur rune was particular nice for me as well, because one of my goals before moving onto d2r is to get one of every rune in the stash so I can complete my flavie report as much as possible. This sur drop moves it down to only ber and jah (and tyraels and fathom) remaining.

Efficiency
Average runtime was 56.2s, with 6.0 average packs, for an adjeff of 3.50. Extremely similar result to the ice maiden. Lol I need to run some faster characters, but spoiler alert, the next couple of sets aren't powerhouses either. Using the old counting method, thats about 3.61.
