2019 Spring RFL Sign-up and Running Thread: 2nd Round

Had a very similar experience to @art_vandelay. Running with 38 mf and 1:15 p1 runtimes as I had mentioned, so i didn't expect much. Then I notice this unidentified unique ring in my stash :) First one ever!

@T72on1 I hope the vid explains those points you mentioned, but in short: You can somewhat control that they don't move out of the Blizzard radius by finding those "sweet spots" on your map. Having them move inside the Blizzard radius is good of course, but it's not that Blizzard deals higher damage that way, but because of its blind spots. As mentioned in the vid, those are best avoided (or at least reduced to a minimum) by casting the Blizzards in slightly different places.

EDIT: Just to be clear, having them in the corner is still better because it's more reliable and you don't have to hit a specific landing spot. Moreover those "sweet spots" aren't were you want them to be on every map (i.e. lower right side from the council and easy to hit while teleporting along the edge). That's why I rolled another map mid-way through my set because I couldn't find a comfortable and reliable way to make them stay together on the other map. But generally the difference between a perfect map and a very good one with convenient landing spots seems to be smaller than I generally assumed. For reference, runs on the new map take ~16.4s with current setup when there's nothing to pick. Not too far off Gripp's sub-16s runs on his map.

Sorc: "Darling, which of these orbs suits me better?"
Me: "I don't know, just pick one and let's go"
Sorc: "I can't decide, they both look good"
Me: "That's what she said"

@ffs What do you think of these runs?

My gut feeling tells me that my overall 27,5s avg (1734 runs for RFL) comes from three factors:
  1. About 1k Blizzard damage missing (only 6k so far)
  2. Teleports are different every run which leads to some very fast ones and some where it becomes a disaster.
  3. Anticipating menus before they appear. Like starting to move my mouse towards the character field only after the selection screen appears, that probably costs half a second each run.
Average of the video is 24,6s which is quite a bit better than my average over 1700 runs, but only by 3 seconds.

In any case I'm happy that I rushed all of my characters so far. They all have exactly the WPs that they need and no others :)

And btw, nice video, explains some of the finer points of this run quite well!

@Luhkoh That's a huge find! Time to switch to Blizzard! :D

@art_vandelay The points you mentioned make sense to me, but I think the biggest improvement would be to roll a map where the Council spawns a bit more closely together. It will make a massive difference. As Gripphon demonstrated with his budget Sorc vid earlier, especially lower damage setups benefit from a good map (or downright depend on it almost), greatly improving both run times and safety.

Don't know how much you hate rolling maps ;) but I've seen one that would be an improvement maybe once every 20-30 minutes or so while rolling maps.

@ffs I think you're lucky with the map rolling! It took me about 3 hours and torc isn't tucked in with the rest. he's a bit further on the balcony and I've seen others mention 3-4 hours without a perfect map.

@ffs Really? That's actually a suprise to me, I though they were already very close together and the problem was them not being at the dead end... But I hear what you're saying. Once I complete this set (6 more hours) I will start rerolling a map with my other Travincal Runner.

Sometimes they all die after the second Blizzard and I end up shooting Ice Blasts into nothingness, I guess that's what should happen 99% of the time on a good map.

Also I rolled this within 15 minutes so your estimation isn't far off but others might still disagree :D

As for Gripphon's Budget Equip: I was a little bit critical at first because it included a Griffon's, but it turns out you really don't need it for the build. Just throw a few lightning facets into an Artisan's Tiara of the Magus and you're golden. I call it 'Gripphon's Eye'

@sir_cyclops Doesn't have to be "perfect". My current map took ~20 minutes to roll which was fast, but previous one took ~1.5 hours and I never spent much more than that rolling any map, not even Pit MF maps. ;) 3 hours without even getting Torc together with the gang seems super unlucky.

(Don't know how others go about it, but I never kill a single monster rolling maps and I discard non-keeper maps immediately, only checking the "below the magic line" teleport route. If you combine it with testing different routes/running/killing council members, it takes much longer of course, so times may not be comparable.)

I though they were already very close together and the problem was them not being at the dead end...
Was watching on phone earlier I must admit, and deduced that they were a bit too spread out from the fact that leftovers were often around the edges. Watching it again it seems that they indeed spawn closely together initially, but they walk out of the Blizzard often. (Happens immediately at the top at 40s and 1m29s for example, somehow Geleb ends up there at 1:15.)

Maybe you can find a "sweet spot" like I mentioned where that doesn't happen. For example the place where you land around 1m53s and 2m10s seems good, they don't move outside of the Blizzard range when you teleport there. Could be worth trying to find a way to consistently do that.

I call it 'Gripphon's Eye'
Nice one. :D

This game is a big troll. From qualifiers point of view my set looked horribly bad. And then comes today, the magical Wednesday when 8 qualifiers drop inside hour and a half to turn the set into rather average one. It's never too late I guess.

@art_vandelay
My Gripphon's Eye noticed a possible improvement. Try to spam more static, at least 4. You do 1 to 2 and that isn't enough to drop even non immune minions, sometimes Conviction is not even active when those 2 Static are cast. Static is essential to cover for the lack of damage.

@ffs That point you mentioned - the spot right behind the second pillar from the stairs - is indeed a good spot. I've been hitting it more often for the last hour and I very rarely get clutter with it (though sometimes it seems that they don't care what is going on and just run away preemptively!)

@Gripphon Thanks, I will improve my static usage! ; Another question on the runs: Do you think it is a good idea to pick magic/rare Coronets and Tiaras?
The main argument against it is probably that they don't fit nicely in the inventory when you also pick up GCs. In LK I used to pick Tiaras together with GCs and that worked out well because I had more inventory space but here it leads to more GoMule visits which technically doesn't affect the runs but still costs time and takes me out of my routine.

After 1950 runs I am left with 39 Coronets/Tiaras and only one seems nice:

Code:
Storm Crest
Tiara
Defense: 86
Durability: 22 of 25
Required Level: 67
Fingerprint: 0x1b246154
Item Level: 85
Version: Expansion 1.10+
Unidentified
+2 to Sorceress Skill Levels
+30% Faster Run/Walk
4% Mana stolen per hit
+69% Enhanced Defense
Level 1 Tornado (22/22 Charges)
2 Sockets (0 used)

Another question on the runs: Do you think it is a good idea to pick magic/rare Coronets and Tiaras

Rare yes, I do pick them up and they are rare enough to not annoy you too much. If inventory is too full to pick it up, you can always pick it up and save/exit with it in the hand and then move it in gomule.

As for magic... I assume you are after 2/20 or 3/20. Those are rare to find and even more rare assuming they are useful only for some classes. If they are troublesome, then it's not worth it due to too low chances of finding something. Better way to get them is to make goldfind character and gamble them.

@Gripphon Yes, the math checks out on that. I got 39 Coronets/Tiaras in 15 hours and if I only make 10 million in half an hour that would still put me at 8-10 Circlets/Coronets gambled per half and hour. Definitely a better deal, at least for magics.

Thanks for blowing my mind btw, I only just noticed the Cursor field in GoMule. Absolute Gamechanger :)
