The Untwinked Level 99 Progress Thread, The Saviours of Sanctuary Rise Anew

Hello everyone!

I had hoped to be adding a different character to this thread far earlier, but things change and that character has turned into a very different kind of long-term commitment and I am not certain I will take it to 99.

However, I do want to participate in this thread quite badly; so I created a new character just for this purpose!

Murtaugh, the Bone Necromancer is currently level 38 and finishing up some Eldritch xp farming.

Murtaugh is in D2R, not using extended stashes, and is Hardcore.

Here are a few rare (my favorite!) finds so far

[Vildecor]

Finally got around to getting some runs in on my Amazon, hoping to get the run counter from 425 to 500 to make 100 runs per week easier to track. And then this happened:



Cursed + Might Death Lord pack. I teleported right in the middle of them, and as you can see from my belt, I was trying to force my way past them like an idiot rather than abandoning the run like I should have. I'm surprised this didn't happen sooner to be honest! I've played her pretty aggressively from the get-go.

I have a HC Zealot about ready to enter Hell, but I think for untwinked 99 I had better stick to SC. Not sure about which class I'll run with next, but I might give Amazons a break after doing 3 consecutive Furyzons.

@Vildecor sorry for your loss! Thats a disgustingly nasty pack. I have tendencies of doing the same with trying to teleport past instead of save&exit.


Getting closer to 98 and beat my personal best in terms of xp and grail (22 left). Only ran pits after last update, kept crafting amulets and gambling for coronets. So far no good circlets have been found, but i did manage to craft this.

Nothing too crazy, but atleast it will allow me to hit 125fcr with dweb if i can find a 2/20 necro circlet.

Nothing has changed gearwise, except these skillers replaced two plain ones and one fhr/cr small charm for 20 life.

Couple new grailers found during the runs. Missing lot of the hard ones with two possibilities like schaefer's hammer. Had few chances with phase blades, but azurewrath doesn't want to drop. Haven't really kept count, but i've found maybe 8 or 9 lightsabres so far. However, runes have been dropping like crazy for this guy lately.

I guess doing almost 10k lk runs paid off more than just in runes.

Yeah, it's a bit shame since it got so close. Still those rolls overall are quite bad and i need to find a way to replace 70 all res from hoto+mara when the time comes. I guess better to start gambling some boots as well.

Wouldn't worry about it too much tbh, there are few targets for Poison Necro where max resists is important. My typical setups for P7 running the Pit or Cows with Necro usually have negative resists across the board. Can't recall ever dying to elemental damage with Necro while running his typical targets. Same for Nihlathak with the exception of fire resist, although Hoto setup probably makes more sense there overall. Travincal is the only target where he's a decent runner and resists are actually needed.

Thanks for the condolences. I think I'm leaning towards Paladin at the moment. Hammerdin is super easy to gear and run, I can always switch it up with a Zealot at any point, and if I decide to go for a torch a budget smiter will be super easy to do.

Great progress @ulof and quite the runehaul. Poison necros are beasts for drops, not as solid for XP progress 96-98 Speaking of progress:

Septimus is another quarter level along, so this will be his last update before he pings 99. A couple nights where I woke up early and couldn't fall back to sleep sped his progress, and the lack of drops :\

Plus two Guls and a Metalgrid, and that was it for the quarter level. He got the extra 2M to update at 3.45B, so only 70M XP left!

The number of NDEs also spiked a bit, with a couple <500HP and one <100HP, which I failed to screenshot because I esc'ed and closed out D2 to take a break when he saw his life at the start of the next run. Basically, he's so beefy in most instances, even when I've been teleporting out of viper clouds, that I've gotten slower to react to amp. I recalibrated around 3.40B after starting the next run <100HP and doing the immediate S&E. Hopefully that's lesson learned

I do somewhat regret using a tourney character now, especially after how unproductive Baal runs were at level 97 prompting the shift to Nihl early. Those 40M XP would be super welcome right now. But I estimate he has about 26 hours left, with hopefully at least another 10M this weekend. So I think he's on track to ping in early March, before RFL begins!

Okay so, I've been busy...

I ran Eldritch till 45 and Pindle until 55, then I disemboweled Baal

I enjoyed every millisecond of this revenge on Blood Raven for over 20 years of annoyance on fresh melee characters

Found my very first 4os polearm which could mean only one thing

Began running Andariel until my eyes bleed for Dual SoJ, got this and a Rockstopper (non eth) as my first nice drops

Not a bad amulet, for now

I think i know just what to do with this little buddy

Got a little bored and decided to progress a bit, Summoner actually dropped something noticeable if you can believe it

So did Duriel! My fireres was low, too...

I haven't had the pleasure of finding one of these before- nice surprise! Not even close to the best, but beats a Nagel (barely)

My reward for returning to Andy... but not from Andy! Don't mind if I do

Will it ever get used? No. But is it super duper cool and am I happy I found it? Yes. May it rest in peace with Charsi

I used the first Lum I got to make one in a Plate Mail, but by Lum #3 I just wanted to make another. Probably wont be used but it is stashed.

Murtaugh is making steady progress gear-wise. I break up the monotony of Andy runs every few hours by running another target or progressing a little at a time. Eldritch surprised me the most with two back to back drops of the same nice item....

TWO Dwarf Stars from NM Eldritch, within minutes of each other....
Right on my first break from grinding Andy for SoJs.... it hurt and felt good at the same time.

Decided to give Pindle a little shot, despite his natural 50% Magic Res he was a reasonably quick target.
I was rewarded with a fantastic merc helm and my THIRD Tals set part. Belt and Amulet dropped previously.

Pindle also rewarded me with my first Vipermagi, after Andy left me high and dry all day....

Unfortunately it was almost as bad as it gets.

Andariel was kind enough to drop a much better one (finally) upon my return to her after our temporary seperation.

If I twinked, I would have a lot of fun with this on a barb

THE FINAL PIECE OF THE PUZZLE

She's a beauty. One day I hope to find a +3 Bone Spirit base.

This probably isn't interesting to most, but it irked me something fierce that this sells for so cheap

Yet costs an arm to repair. Typically items that command that repair price sell for max. Unique items in general are underpriced to sell, but this is the most egregious example I can think of.

I decided to replace my Rhyme with a Splendor to hit the next FCR breakpoint in my mf gear... +1 skill is also nice. But I'll miss the resist and CBF

Used Hel + TP to clear the base (which has a dope +2 spear/+2 prison) and made this

And.... finally, without further wandering....

One more to go.

Which is an absolute friggin nightmare, because the first one took over FIFTY UNIQUE RING DROPS.
FIFTY. aka Nearly double the 'average' to find a SoJ. Hopefully my next one at least won't take quite that long....

BONUS SECTION

So I had a big weekend of playtime. Inexplicably both the fiancee and kids were gone and after pinching myself several times I booted up D2R. This meant pushing my lightdancer assassin from NM to Hell LK. I spent quite a bit of time at NM Mephy and he was stingy as..well...hell... er or nightmare...you know what I mean. It turns out crushing blow works with kicking...did anyone else know that My goal was to get a skin of the vipermagi and goreriders before moving on. I found plenty of stuff including two occuluses (occuli?) I also racked a HOZ for some future pally. I started getting antsy and decided that I was going to switch to NM countess runs and NM mephy runs until one of two things happened: Either Meph dropped SOTVM or countess dropped a shael so I could make rhyme as I wanted CNBF before entering Hell. So after a few runs NM Meph produced this:

So not exactly what I was expecting but good enough to move on. I was really struggling with resists so I took my lum rune and made smoke and threw on a rockstopper (I hadn't used it before, pretty nice helm). With resists shored up, I started out. ACT 1 was uneventful, I did a few Pit runs without anything exciting happening. I pushed to ACT 2 and started running into issues. My prayer/insight merc was dying all the time, especially to the beatles. It was definitely a hard days night. I swapped in a tals helm but that didn't change things much. I wanted to make treachery and had a really great wyrmhide. I threw it in the cube with the runes and gem and hit "transmute" with fingers crossed that I would get 3os and.....and.....and.....nothing happened! Like literally nothing. Turns out it can't be superior (epic facepalm fail emoji goes here)...so after some embarrassment of not understanding the recipe I went back to the drawing board. I switched to holy freeze and started using mind blast a lot more. That helped but there was some really intense fighting in the tomb before Duriel. I just left my merc dead and did some one-on-one action. Duriel dropped crap and I left an extremely rich Griez and ACT 2 behind.

ACT 3 was much more tolerable. I found some interesting things including a baba skiller. I found a 5os war scepter with +1 to redemption that I had to leave due to not having inventory room. I thought that might have made a nice call to arms base but expect by the time I have the runes I'll find something better. I finally made it to LK and started looking for maps. My first roll I popped a log

and surprise surprise





@28 not bad!! So now resists are just fine and I might be able to change some things out. I found a monarch that I am going to try to cube for a spirit shield...I think I can get the cube to work this time I have a two campfire map but the WP is inbetween the two so it involves a lot of backtracking. I'm going to reroll or maybe push through to Meph so I can start in ACT IV. A long way to go yet: Nona_Greyy lvl 78 and hanging out in LK.

Just finished normal difficulty at level 45. Should have time next week to both finish NM as well as do a bit of NM Mephisto farming. I decided to go with D2R, so after I've gotten Enigma, I may do some SoJ hunting as well.

I already got a couple of nice drops while grinding levels in Act V. I got a Tarnhelm from Eldritch and a Goldwrap from Pindle.
