@Jocular I am planning to do some weird builds in the future, when i have more of cool items.
@drmalawi Yeah, i abandon runs from time to time, but those make way less than 1% though. Probably something like 0,5% of the total number of runs done. I don't like to do it, cause i learnt that my barb is tanky, way tankier than my merc (59 vs 19 iDR), so if you meet might vipers, merc dies first cause of the bug and you can continue the run. You have a clip of that below. Of course this is true if you are only teleporting. Forget about running around surrounded by might/fana clouds, cause there is no build that can keep you alive if you do so and you can see it in that first death clip i posted in my previous post.
I also forgot to include some data in my post. I will do it here. My average runtime over those 7k runs is 24,757s and it is getting smaller. My plan is to get below 24s at the end. I am at ~24s average in current runs but initial runs were slower, so my total average is higher.
I also did some runs without howl and honestly i can't tell which setup is better. Both ways of running have their pros and cons. Sometimes confuse doesn't proc quickly and ghosts that occasionally spawn there come right at you and steal your mana which is kinda annoying, cause you can't chase nihla if he is teleporting around and of course you have to leech some mana before you can use conc (You can see it in the clip below that paragraph). This is where howl becomes helpful. It also keeps other mobs away. The problem is that no matter what you do, you will get some vipers' javelins thrown at you and merc has a bad time dealing with those, so he dies often. Cons of using howl is that if you cast it every run, you loose some time. It is kind of a joke, cause you literally loose 8 frames, but the difference is there and it's up to you whether you care about it or not xD Next thing is that some of nihla minions can run aways from you if you use howl on them and it creates free space for him to run away from you. That's annoying. Also, i think that if merc procs confuse or decrepify on first hit (when you are teleporting to nihla), you can override it with howl. I don't remember seeing this, but i am focused on not dying more than checking things like that XD The last thing is that howl produces a lot of blinking stuff on the screen and it can be hard to see something.
I tried to optimize my teleporting path, so i land directly on nihla each time, but i came to the conclusion that it is not worth it. You can do it and it is better, but i don't want to spend time trying to find the absolute best spot where you have to have the cursor... I am happy with my pathing. During this process, I found an interesting thing though. Sometimes when you enter the next lvl of a dungeon, your char runs a little bit from the stairs. I think it happens when you are too close to them. You can't see such thing when you teleport a little bit further from the entrance and click on it, so your char has to run a little bit before entering the next lvl. Somebody definitely discovered that little thing, but i thought it is worth mentioning here.

I haven't been keeping track of my stats too closely, though a look at my LK run times and decent estimates at time played said my 2 Ohm + Ber rune finds were dismal. Finally, early this week I hit a Lo. Not a huge jump on the Jah I still needed for Enigma but nice since it was my first Lo since the restart. Then Friday night, I found another Ber. I don't feel like 2 Bers were far off what I should have expected for the number of runs I had done, it was the 0 Surs that were nearly unbelievable. Regardless, LK running had been so frustrating but suddenly I was only a Sur away. Finally Saturday the dam broke and I got a Sur. I spent another hour looking for gems (no extended stash for me so gems are an extravagance) to cube up the runes to Jah Ber and looking for an armor and in the process found another Sur. I guess D2 decided it didn't need to hide the runes anymore since I had what I needed.
Now I'm just tracking down an armor and then will hopefully be paying a somewhat shorter visit to meph for a few items and then its off to the races.

I read Luhkoh´s Fire vs Lightning theme development. It was really interesting for me, because I have not done many Nihlathak runs with sorcerers myself. I totally agree with everything said. Due to no movement, as a caster, you won´t get any hits from poison clouds at all. That said, you can take CE as your only threat and the main question would be how to avoid CE all together. This by itself is completely dependant on your equipment. Speed is the key factor in some sense.
I have noticed, that in Bnet people mostly tend to choose Blizzard over Fire/Lightning skills just to avoid CE. I believe, that in a perfect world (With perfect equipment for corresponding skill tree) Cold/Fire -> Lightning. In your case, I would choose Fire skills, because it should be faster and provides some extra protection and fire power against Nihlathak chamber filled with vipers.
Btw you can equip your mercenary with so-called blunt weapon, making sure, that none of these Nihlathak´s minions would not die. Otherwise Nihlathak could start using his main skill.
I would also like to suggest one OP item in my opinion, which is usually forgotten for whatever reasons. Drumroll ... it is Hotspurs
. On my last road to 99 I actually farmed it for 2 hours at Normal level after building Enigma This item is especially useful if you do both CS and Nihlathak together. Over thousands of runs in CS you will meet loads of Infectors with Conviction aura and it is handy against Nihlathak as well. The best place to find it is killing champion called Ravenclaw at Normal level if I remember correctly.
Few updates on Fragile´s progress as well. I have to admit, that I have been really lazy in these last two or three weeks. I picked up Pot Limit Omaha books once again and have done some grinding in Pokerstars. Nevertheless, I have done 40-42 hours with Fragile in total and I have found 2 high runes, which are Lo (completely useless) and Ber. I also found the runes for Heart of the Oak runeword, but flail is still missing. What´s more ... Another unique Shako dropped and it is just ridiculous, but I see either normal, magical or socketed gray Shako dropped almost in every run . I would not be suprised if I´d find another unique one soon
For the moment I will stick with Ancient Tunnels of course. Deep down I hope, that I can skip Travincal phase. If I could only find Ohm and other runes for CTA. I am surprised, because experience gain is actually rather decent in AT (P8) and I am currently sitting on 2.18 M.
Magic find drops have been horrific itemwise. I have only found a bunch of magical Shakos

I believe, that in a perfect world (With perfect equipment for corresponding skill tree) Cold/Fire -> Lightning. In your case, I would choose Fire skills, because it should be faster and provides some extra protection and fire power against Nihlathak chamber filled with vipers.
Btw you can equip your mercenary with so-called blunt weapon, making sure, that none of these Nihlathak´s minions would not die. Otherwise Nihlathak could start using his main skill.
I would also like to suggest one OP item in my opinion, which is usually forgotten for whatever reasons. Drumroll ... it is Hotspurs
. On my last road to 99 I actually farmed it for 2 hours at Normal level after building Enigma This item is especially useful if you do both CS and Nihlathak together. Over thousands of runs in CS you will meet loads of Infectors with Conviction aura and it is handy against Nihlathak as well. The best place to find it is killing champion called Ravenclaw at Normal level if I remember correctly.Few updates on Fragile´s progress as well. I have to admit, that I have been really lazy in these last two or three weeks. I picked up Pot Limit Omaha books once again and have done some grinding in Pokerstars
. Nevertheless, I have done 40-42 hours with Fragile in total and I have found 2 high runes, which are Lo (completely useless) and Ber. I also found the runes for Heart of the Oak runeword, but flail is still missing. What´s more ... Another unique Shako dropped and it is just ridiculous, but I see either normal, magical or socketed gray Shako dropped almost in every run . I would not be suprised if I´d find another unique one soon For the moment I will stick with Ancient Tunnels of course. Deep down I hope, that I can skip Travincal phase. If I could only find Ohm and other runes for CTA. I am surprised, because experience gain is actually rather decent in AT (P8) and I am currently sitting on 2.18 M.
Magic find drops have been horrific itemwise. I have only found a bunch of magical Shakos

@Luhkoh If XP gain is your primary concern, light sorc will be faster I presume. Of course if your fire gear is superb and your lightning gear is much worse, that does make a difference, but not sure how probable that is. IIRC even without Griffon's @Yng had XP/h numbers higher than fire sorcs. I think he didn't have many skillers either, and I also started Nihl runs with only 2 skillers – they don't matter that much it seems. When I ran Nihl Hall of Records style with a fully twinked sorc and full skiller inventory, it was barely faster than my untwinked 99er Sorc (though I did have some loading time issurs. I still believe Light Sorc is overall fastest Nihl runner with current patch gear (i.e. without time travel items).
As for drops, Fire does get a few more creeps killed and it’s easier to include more MF than with Lightning Sorc, also Fire Sorc can be tankier (more life and DR can be included) due to the lower FCR needs. Same for Blizzy I guess.
So yeah, every Sorc is a good Nihl runner in the end.

Yep, that is true. Blizzy would probably be the worst runner in terms of speed. Even though you get 50% off from Nihlathak´s health with Static, the Blizzard waves are rather imprecise and quite random it seems. Killing the villain could take some time in this case, especially if he has decided to stand still .
.Quinta has completed the next quarter level, sitting a little past 98.75 at 3.45B. As noted, she started making progress after returning for a nice vacation earlier this month, with some careful progress getting back into the swing early before settling back into the groove.
We had a really close call fairly early on, with a few other less-scary situations ~500 life since then:

First off, congrats to all on the progress (and a small booooo to Septimus for for considering straying from the path of fire ), and a huge WELCOME to all the new entrants! Glad to see this thread still super active and some new faces joining the fun.

I've not been able to log in to the forums for several weeks, but that seems to be remedied now! Luckily, I've still been able to launch D2 so naturally Stevesy has made some progress! He's completed 93-93.5 with Trav runs, netting a touch over 1k horking runs in the process. Last we heard, his rune luck had finally turned around after an abysmal start to the Trav and let me just say; his luck has definitely NOT run out just yet. Let's get to the spoils!
He started off level 93 with an absolute bang:
Now, a Cham isn't actually overly useful for him, but of course it's always awesome to see! A quick Pul followed to keep the runes coming and then:
Uh. Okay. So this is where he's been hiding all his rune luck. The luck didn't stop there either as he netted himself an always-useful Ohm before taking a huge bite out of Enigma:
Absolutely insane rune luck, although unfortunately I still haven't seen a Ber. I'm not gonna start complaining about 2 Chams and a Jah though!

The luck didn't stop there either, with some handy Uniques to add to the fun. One of each skill ring with a SoJ (his 2nd) and a BKWB, and then just what the doctor ordered in some Gores.
Whew. Very VERY good set there, and I think I can safely forgive the Council for not giving up a Ber just yet. XP is coming slowly, but it's constant enough that it helps keep the sanity moving during the dry drop times. At this point I think I have enough runes that Stevesy could burn them to make an Enigma, but it would pretty much completely empty the cupboards and I've got a bunch of other RWs I need to make, so I'm game to hold out a little bit longer.

First off, we did about 600 LK runs. We got our Ohm rune to make CtA.
Gear was FRW charms, circlet with 30% FRW, Cat's eye amulet, Tearhaunch for granting the Vigor skill (though I used Aldurds boots for a while until I realized that actually had Tearhaunch in stash), Stealth Cuirass armor.
Drop highlights from LK:
CtA and Spirit runewords:
Now when I had these key-runewords out of the way, I did mostly Pits (players 3) with some MF-gear all the way to level 93.
Goal was to get Guilliams Face and a 5 socketed Phase Blade.
We got both, the Phase Blade was hard though. In total on this char, I got it on my 13th trial which is kinda unlucky (90% probability) see grap:

The probability is calculated as 100*(1-(5/6)^x) where x is the number of Phase Blades.
We also got another Ist rune and yet another Ist rune from the countess (no idea why I did her again at this stage but hey it payed off^^).
Anyways, we could finally craft our goal-weapon, Grief:

Currently, we are doing Travincal (players3) to get the runes for Enigma (Ber and Jah, and Sur for cubing). Best rune so far is an Um.
Gear:
Guilliams face, Smoke wyrmhide, Sanctuary Royal Shield, Grief PB, Laying of Hands, RavenFrost, Gore riders, String of Ears, angelic amulet + ring. Charms - random AR, max dmg, life, and some res.
Switch - CtA and Spirit.
Merc:
Reapers toll, stone ebugged ornate plate, Kiras 65% all res.
Might aura ^^
See you again when I am level 94 (in about 1700 Travincal runs).

Nice progress guys, and rip to the high lvl pala ):
After the rip of my untwinked hc pala a few weeks ago i started another one like 2 weeks ago. im just not that motivated for the summoner baalruns currently^^ Playthough was pretty okay, already did some andy/mephisto and got some basics like arach, maras (no shako ^^)
Currently im doin LK (Maras btw dropped from a random corpse at LK, soo nice) to for Cta and enigma runes, got 1 Sur so far. When i get an ohm and can mak cta, ill prolly stop LK for a while and do some cs runs cause specially since i already hav some gear, that could be fun even w/o enigma^^

Hi all, back from vacation and ready to get back to playing some D2!
@ResTTe sorry about the death. Hopefully you got it out of the way! Also nice runtimes. Very similar to my times so far with my fire sorc. If you're running howl (which looks like it works quite well to me) is there any need for delirium on merc? Or I guess also is there any advantage of using something else? Maybe andys for faster decrep.

@D30D0R3 Why do you think fire would be faster than lightning for me? That is what I concluded with my spreadsheet, but only barely, and ffs seemed to think lightning would still be faster.
Viper clouds are most definitely still a big threat. I would say the primary threat. The issue is the nextdelay from being near merc, but hopefully through stepping away from him I can avoid that. Also I have seen I think one CE so far and it mustve been a low dmg roll on a low hp enemy, because it barely tickled. Hopefully that's a good sign rather than pure luck. I also speculate merc cant kill arachs fast enough for nihla to get a CE on them, except when he's FE/LE.
The issue with cold is nihla has 70 base cold res, which causes him to roll unbreakable cold immune much more often than unbreakable fire or lightning immune. Because of this I dont think cold build can compete at all, unless you go blova or another hybrid like pb_pal did.
Equipping merc with a weak weapon is indeed a nice idea. Infinity is required however, and while it would be better in a strict sense, I couldn't bring myself to make my first infinity in a scythe like Bewitch or yng

Maybe after I get 99 I will do some runs with that lightning setup and see what the times are like. No promises though I might be too sick of the runs! Speaking of which, have you tried out the fire variant? I would be interested in how the high-end gear times compare with your light sorc with that mac no-lag. I'm sure it would be slower, but I doubt it's by much and it would be nice to have a basis of comparison from the same computer.

NIHLA SETUP
So i did respec to fire and start the nihla runs. Though I'm only like 600 runs in so far. I actually went with a different setup (I'm calling it safety setup) and like it a lot so far. Basically I went hoto instead of eschutas. This fire res allows me to use treks instead of aldurs, which allows me to socket shako with sol instead of shael. Then I also am using a second natures peace instead of soj, for a total of 26 iDR instead of 11. Also I ended up with some really nice fire res/life small charms. Here's a video showing the gear and a couple of runs.

Please let me know if anyone sees some obvious improvements i can make on the runs whether for efficiency or safety.
I think the most important damage "breakpoint" with this fire nihla build is when you can kill nihla in 1 meteor (when he doesn't have res-boosting modifiers). I needed 1 more skiller to hit that somewhat consistently (needed 5 skillers instead of 4) with my max dmg setup. So since I couldn't hit that "breakpoint" I decided the smallish difference in dmg between max dmg setup and safety setup were something I didn't care about. That being said I'll probably try the soj at some point, but I think the hoto over eschutas is my final decision. So with that, I have a remaining socket quest that I don't think I will use. Maybe nihla will drop griffons and I'll switch to light sorc
S/E TIMES & RUNTIMES
Anyways the runs are going well so far. I did die in like the first ten runs just experimenting in the viper clouds (lol), but no close calls since then. Removing runeword mod made a huge difference in s/e times and then adding no sound seemed to shave off another second or so. So I think I'm around 3-4 seconds avg additional lag for this run (judged by comparing time of first session run to avg runtime). So leaves a bit to be desired, but I'm pleased with that small a number.
Also in the first like 100 runs I dropped boneflame and steelrend. Thats my 4th boneflame and 3rd steelrend, with none of the super cool tc87 uniques to my name.
Runtimes are 24.75s avg right now, and they are still going down, although slowly. Regular runs are ~22s, LE runs are ~23.5s, FE runs are ~27.5s and FE/LE runs are ~31s. Of course magic resistant and spectral hit make a difference too, but much less noticeably. I'm not checking (read: not rolling a map with) any shrines, so exp/hr is around 3.2m. Definitely pleased with that so far. My "minimum" goal was to avg 3m over the whole lvl (not counting any deaths) and that seems very achievable.
EXTRA SKILL POINTS
Oh one thing I didn't discuss earlier is what to do with the extra skill points after maxing the fire dmg and getting the range needed on static. I know @T72on1 put them in firewall, but I didn't see myself ever making use of that, and I know @Bewitch put them into inferno for the afterburn dmg on meteor. I played a few hundred runs without committing the points. I debated doing something defensive with them, but I'm not sure ES is a reasonable idea on a build that doesn't have plenty of mana, and I don't even find myself taking the time to cast frozen armor (despite having put a point in it). So I ended up putting the points in inferno. This SEEMED to immediately shave like 0.5s off the run, but I have a hard time believing it has that big an impact. But regardless I do think it makes a difference.
S/E & PICKING BEHAVIOR FOR SAFETY
Also as far as safety goes, if I see any one of: amp dmg, might, fana, vipers, I keep a finger over the esc button and stare at hp bulb. If i see any two of those, I probably just s/e. If I'm taking dmg through less volatile means (blood stars, archers), I just stare at hp bulb and s/e immediately if i see a number less than 1500. Do these seem like good protocols?
I also occasionally get low on mana, maybe every 15 runs or so. I'm just hitting malah real quick when that happens. Lose like 2 seconds on the run, but feels nicer than slowly using mana pots and needing to restock.
As far as picking behavior goes, I care a lot about this with the sorc. She feels fairly safe during the tele'ing to nihla and the killing (we'll see if i change my tune a few more weeks in though), but picking something up feels like it triples the danger. I walk to the platform to do so for fear of the nextdelay clouds, so it also adds a a few seconds to the runtime. Anyways, I'm thinking something like this for the picking behavior. Let me know what you all think.
I think for now I'm just gonna shoot for 15 mill per week (4.5-5 hours of play, and ~4 months time to lvl) and spend the rest of my weekly gaming time on other characters or even other games. - Always pick up - useful uniques/sets, grailers, pul+ runes
- Skip during nihla runs only - small charms, flawless gems, ral runes, rare gloves/pelts/claws/boots
- Not sure, maybe skip as well - grand charms, rare rings, rare amulets, rare circlets

Uh oh, it feels, that my original view has been somewhat misunderstood. As a HC player (survivability -> everything else) I was merely talking about survivability in that post . My intention was to touch the speed aspect as a fraction of survivability (Your enemies cannot harm you if you neutralise them fast enough. the speedier the caster, the better survivability).
I reread my original post and the last sentence might be a bit misleading. The better version should be:

@Luhkoh once you get comfortable with map landing spot and with side step vipers really shouldn't be a risk without a misclick, and I think your approach to S&E based on rolls sounds solid and should keep the sorc safe. One combo I would add as auto-bail is might/fanaticism with lots of witches and/or archers. That's nasty and the bulb can drop really quick, especially if amp triggers after projectiles have been launched. I believe @Grape had a nasty mishap with his fire sorc to that combo, and he had a massive life pool with time travel gear.
It's good to hear you've gotten S&E lag manageable (mine is also now around 4s, which allows ~3M/hr and a great improvement over experience with first two 99ers'). I also found 15M/week a nice goal for Nihl runs, so best of luck moving along.

I agree that going to drops is the biggest risk with a sorc, with Vipers being the main issue there, and picking up drops does slow runs over time. I have a hard time leaving SCs and GCs due to possibilities, as well as rare jewelry and circlets. But ignoring those on runs with Vipers could be a nice middle ground of safety, speed, and maybe getting a great roll. Looking forward to the progress!

@PhineasB Excellent glad to hear it on your s/e times, and thanks for the advice! Unfortunately I had my first "real" nihlathak death yesterday already. Not too upset about any deaths before the first 10% or so, where I'm still figuring things out, but embarrassing for sure . As predicted it was picking up something with snakes around. I saw a pair of set battle boots drop, thought they were unique, got buried where i couldn't find them quickly, and a bunch of snakes walked in the room while I was looking. On the bright side, I got to practice my corpse recovery , which went smoothly. Anyways my takeaway here is that if I'm only going to pick something up every ~100 runs, I might as well take the time to clear the entire room before doing so.
