I am a fan of the nova type skills, running an ES/Nova light sorc, a PNova Necro. Not aiming is nice! Neither of these builds make good Ancient Tunnel runners so next up was to try Frost Nova

I have also been pondering the benefits of the Prudence runeword and getting to use juicy EBugged armor on my toon directly instead of just as merc gear. To get the most benefit from that, I went with a max defense build in mind: Shivering Armor/Defiance Merc

In short, I am very much a fan of the high defense build.

Also, by twinked, that means simply twinked within my means. I don't have the deep stashes as others might. I am still missing many gear pieces to push this build to a competitive runner.

The journey:
Like most starts, P8 right out the gate...bash stuff with the staff until level 6, then with the help of TONS of STR charms...decked out in full Sigons with Infernal Torch weapon (13 min dmg 1 hander this early?!)

This carried me through until level 15 where I had a few points into Frost Nova and a couple in Shiver Armor. Here I switched to Arcanna's full set (4 pieces) with 3 piece Sigons (Gloves/Belt/Boots). There was a lot of Frost Nova to chill, whack with staff due to mana limitations and low FCR.


This I wore up until I could start switching over to a nice FCR rate....around level 25.
105 FCR - (Maelstrom wand: 30 FCR, Stealth armor: 25 FCR, Magefists: 20 FCR, Wall of Eyeless: 20 FCR, 10 FCR from ring/amulet) still 2 piece sigons and tarn helm for the +1 skills.

After that there were only minor gear shifts as pieces became available, Vipermagi at 29, my first Prudence at 50, Occy at 51, Spirit Shield at 54, Harlequin Crest at 52

Buzzed through NM with no issues, toggling between P1 for quick questing followed by area re-runs at higher player settings for XP. It is a very safe build with the high defense and chill from nova and arrived in Hell around level 62. I buzzed through Hell up through Anya quest where I settled up around level 65. I had a bit of a conundrum. I was too low level to get much xp from Pindle runs though I was quite capable of wiping the floor with them so I had to search for more reasonable areas to gain XP from for a cold sorc.

Settled on hitting up the Cold Plains for Bishibosh and then the Cave levels 1 and 2. Very lucky drops here with a BER (unpictured...had my computer eating the screenshot key if I was holding Alt it turns out, had to map a separate key for screenshots. Followed by this MAL several runs later.

At some point I gave her a low CTA on switch (3BC/1BO) which allows for 1600 life/700 mana in my current gear, Not much else to report from hear on out. I used the MAL to try for a better ED roll on Prudence, also in an eth wyrmhide, succeeded in 159% for a 2696 AR piece. Decided I wanted to try cow runs with Frost Nova to compare to my Nova sorc so I took on the Ancients (at P1). Had to reset a few times, the first time with just 1 cold immune, my merc and I were able to dispatch the 2 non-cold immunes all right but he fell in the battle and I had to reset again. A few more resets to get back to just 1 cold immune, this time with the merc still alive so it was a matter of feeding him pots while he finished the deed.

As for cow runs, I decided not to use her this particular tourney because I am only sitting at 600 FN damage (1200ish with -CR) and that is slightly under powered vs my Nova Sorc sporting an infinity merc. She was very safe there though, for comparison and defense effect here is a cow's chance to hit me: 16% -- far better damage reduction than max block without the block speed concerns nor dex needed....simple stats: 146 str (get 10 str from War Trav Boots to hold monarch), rest in Vita....

What next? Well, like most nova builds she does great at P1, can manage P3 with great gear that I don't have yet, but really tails off in speed after that. My goal for her is to finish equipping for P1 Ancient Tunnel runs...needs: Deaths Fathom, better Nightwings (I have a +9% CD but for now the life and mana and MF from Shako just feels better), more cold skillers (only 1 right now), and some facets I can about double my damage) and better armor for the merc. I also want to look for an even better base for Prudence to get that AR over 3k on that piece alone. Current tunnel runs can be done in about 85 seconds so I think it would drop to a much more palatable time frame with the gear upgrades)

Additional Thoughts:
Prudence, it gets a bad rap but it has almost all positive stats, Hit Recover, Resists, DR, big MDR, +2 MPK, and self repair at the cost of a single Mal...well worth it in my opinion. I am, however, considering trying out Stone in Eth Armors and just recreating when they run out of durability. That costs UM+PUL each time but can push to 290% ED basically making 4k armor possible and over 25k def after Shivering armor and defiance and dropping nearly all normal moster attack to the 5% chance to be hit minimum. It also comes with all the hit recovery you need when coupled with Spirit shield and a few resists and stat buffs. I will probably try it out and see how quickly it would burn through durability.

Using Occulus, if you've played battle.net on a laggy connection, that's what the random teleporting feels like. It tends to trigger more from getting hit with magic since melee attacks by most monsters are only 15% or less chance. It has saved me more times than it dropped me into danger so it has that going for it. Main reason for choosing was for the MF...this one is isted so alone gives 80 MF along with the other sorc related goodies. That is a drawback of the Frost Nova build, finding space for additional MF is difficult.

I would definitely recommend a sorc max defense build. Safer than max block (take fewer hits coupled with higher vita) but it does cost 21 skill points to be fully effective. I have not played around with a low or 0 point option and prebuffing with a Shiver armor orb or staff but this could be an alternate method, just still not as high of defense as investing the skillpoints. I am actually planning a max shiver armor Fire Sorc for LK running very soon.

Since you're having issues with giving up shako because of mana you could try making some caster boots for a possible +60 mana (+20 from the recipe and +40 from an affix) and +5% max mana. One time I found some rare frw/fhr/cold res/lightres/mf/+mana boots and they were to die for :love:
Literally, I deeded that character.

Very cool build though! I've been wanting to do something similar regarding defense, it's a stat rarely utilized at any part of the game. Maybe a werebear druid? :unsure:

Congrats! It's always style points going Frost Nova. Interesting choice going all out safety as well.

And yeah, pushing for 1K+ damage on FN isn't easy.

Congrats! Nice character and writeup. I like Prudence too. Still haven't made one mainly because of bad luck with socket rolls on Ebug armours. Did a maxblock sorc to lessen chances for Occy teles. Worked ok but will need to test this approach for same purpose. Defence sorc added to to-do list. :)

Have also given thought to eth Stone. Should last a good while on a caster and it is still usable on a merc with 1 durability.

Very nice write up, and nice character. I did a vanilla nova char based off a guide from the old SPF - went with wizardspike & stormshield for max block and max FCR - this somehow seems even more safe.

Also, nice to see "lesser" runewords being used, that Prudence is delicious.

16% chance to be hit isn't necessarily less chance to be hit than max block, because with max block you still have some defense. If you have max block and 50% chance to be hit due to your defense, then thats only (100-75)*(100-50) = 12.5% chance to be hit. So you could get the total hp in both cases and assume a dmg number per hit, and then you can get "average hits to death" to see which is tankier for blockable hits in different situations. Usually the block turns out to be worth it for that, but ofc it lowers your hp for taking elemental dmg too, so definitely a tradeoff. Also defense isn't nearly as useful against blessed aim, fanaticism, or conviction, whereas block remains. Anyways, not very important, but that's a discussion I really enjoy. Congrats again on the mat! Prudence cool to see in use.

I actually had considered including max block with stormshield for the extra defense and damage reduction. Imagine 5% chance to be hit, 75% block on whatever gets through...approx. 2% chance to take melee damage on normal monsters and better against boss packs with unfavorable mods...etc...but I agree, it isn't so cut and dry and some situations block would be better.
