Ten thousand, the greatest number expressed in Ancient Greek as a single word

I thought of this as long-term goal of mine for D2, and wanted to see if it would interest anybody else. Or, perhaps, somebody has already achieved this feat? The objective is simple: attain a combined 10,000 levels with your D2 characters.

Depending on your average level, this will require 110-130 characters to complete. That seems like a ridiculous number. But, for those that enjoy simply playing through the game, it can be done. I figure this will take me over a decade to accomplish.

My target number will be 120 characters. Hitting lvl 80 with all of them will give me 9600 for my total. The remaining 400 will be made up through 80x 5-lvl increments. A lvl 85 character adds 1 increment, a lvl 95 character adds 3 increments, etc etc.

I started this project right after my restart. I was in lurk mode at that time, so I never bothered making a thread about it. Most of the original (Normal Set) characters were quite under powered, and I just scraped by until getting the HF reward. Now that I have a bit more wealth, it's a bit easier to finish them off.

So far, I am pretty much following his plan to the letter. So, I wanted to give a shout out to @ioupainmax for the nice analysis of builds suitable for each of the exceptional sets, found here.

Caveat (my opinion): Many of these recommendations are because these are the best builds for those sets, rather than the best gear for those builds. In most cases, runewords/uniques are better for each build, but it's nice to get some use out of the sets. You can of course complete the game with a naked character, so don't assume you absolutely have to use these build recommendations for the sets, do whatever is most fun for you!

M'avina's Battle Hymn: M'avina's complements Freezing Arrow well due to the +20% To Cold Skill Damage (Complete Set) from the gloves. Plus, the set isn't particularly geared towards physical damage builds, but you can still Strafe pretty well with it. Most people go for a hybrid with Immolation Arrow because FA and IA need the same type of other gear. It's just a shame that Immolation arrow is hampered by the cooldown timer.

For an Ice Maiden/Magezon, the Ice Runeword bow is much better than the +20% CSD from the gloves, but since you don't have high end runewords, this set is pretty good.

Natalya's Odium: The set isn't the best gear for a Phoenix Striker, but Phoenix Striker is a good (perhaps the best?) build for the set. A more physical build will want more crushing blow from boots and helm slot but those are already taken up by the set, so the set is not a great fit for physical builds.

Immortal King: Whirlwind...'nuff said...oh you wanted more...okay...Concentrate is too slow/boring. Can't Double Swing/Frenzy/Throw with this set, Leap Attack is a novelty build (I'm making one but it is hard work) and that leaves Berserk. Whirlwind is just quicker.

Aldur's Watchtower: This set really sucks. No FCR and minimal + Skills means that any type of caster is out and there are way better options for pure Summoners. This leaves melee, but the weapon is very poor - being Exceptional(ly bad) rather than Elite, so you want to augment your physical attacks with an element - hence Fire Claws.

Trang-Oul's Avatar: The set bonus of -25% To Enemy Poison Resistance (3 Items) from the head and the inherent +25% Poison Skill Damage from the gloves mean you'll definitely want to be a Venomancer for this build.

Griswold's Legacy: Lots of sockets to customise your build, the weapon is rather good and complements Vengeance well. The straight Adds Damage set bonii work well with Vengeance and Jewels can ramp the minimum damage up quite a bit.

Another option is the Abbot build, fill the set with Sol runes for lots of Damage Reduction.

Tal Rasha's Wrappings: This set can work with multiple builds, however, if you go Cold, you'll probably want to use Death's Fathom and Nightwing's Veil. If you go Lightning, you'll want to use Griffon's Eye. Fire on the other hand, doesn't have any great caster items (plus we're avoiding high end runewords). Therefore, it makes sense to go with a Fire hybrid build to make the most out of the set.

The idea for this Sept all began from finding a Bonehew. I always focused on the 50% ctc Bone Spear, and thought that it would make for a great synergized melee Necromancer. As I thought about what a waste the charges of CE would be, I realized - wouldn't that be great to have CE on other classes..

I started looking into Item Skill Bonuses. Reviewing this list is when I started to think a Sept might be possible.

Static + Orb is all you really need for 1.07 (Hydra is for re-seeding racks, not sure why it's maxed..). She has done some MF running (I forget the break point ATM, +556% or so). She also did a bit of "rushing". I just ran some new characters to A5 normal to get some extra socket quests. But, the vast majority of her time has been spent racking in LK. She's found me a good amount of the sought after S/U, as well as a healthy stock of 1.07 damage charms.

Not a good 1st choice of character. Idea was to swing fast, with lots of CB. Made it through NM (easily, but slowly) with Death's Touch and 'Duress' Runeword. Added a 'Black' RW at start of Hell. Stuck at HF for a long time, until recently when I decided to bring in the big guns.. 'Fortitude' and 'Grief' PB got him to Patriarch.

Liked this set for Javazon because it left wep slot open for Titan's Revenge. Plus, the other classes look even more ridiculous in it. Plague Jav + LF. Had a lot of LIs to deal with on Hell, so had to rely on poison. Made killing speed pretty slow. Merc + Valk tanking made her pretty survivable though. Stopped at HF.

Never played a hammerdin before. A few +skills from the set was nice. Got hammer up to almost 4k damage. Both him and merc were very fragile. Kill speed was very good though. Bosses became a race to see who could drop the other first. Battles were over very quickly, difficult to get screenshots. Stopped at HF.

Another good character to start with. I ended up just TP most of the way through NM/Hell. Leveled her up with some Countess runs. Most of the Bosses took merc down pretty quickly, but Arcanna handled them on her own. Took her to all the way to Matriarch.

This is actually the first build of my 'Passion' sept, but nothing special about her. Orb pairs nicely with Zeal/Enchant: long range AoE cold, and close range fire dmg. She started to have trouble hitting things later into Hell difficulty though.

This one was not planned out very well. Had to use an Amazon spear for 'Passion' and of course I made it in a +3 spear. I thought of making a Passive-Tree-only zeal-a-zon, but that would waste the skills on the spear.. Then, once I looked at the IAS tables, I realized zeal was slower than Jab and Fend anyway.. So, plan was to Jab/Fend with CB, and use Berserk as PI solution.

Not a great build, but manageable. Bosses were all easy, as they preferred to attack Valk. General killing speed wasn't that great though, as I had to ditch a lot of CB gear in favor of more safety. WSK was the only terrible area, with Burning souls and Mummies. There were many deaths.. By the end I wish I had stuck with zeal, and used Lightning Strike as PI solution. At least that would have given me some AoE. (might try that on my next 'Passion' Spearazon) lol.

I ended up using a respec to do just that, and level her off. Zeal + LS/CS was a much better combination.

One of my less successful 'Passion' plans. Originally intended to be a more typical Zealbarb, he played all the way to lvl 64 with just normal attack until he could equip 'Passion' zerker axe. However, after discovering that my Druid would only be able to zeal in human form, I decided polearm would not be the greatest choice for him. So, he turned over his hurty stick to Übereifer.

It was quite entertaining zealing away with this big thing. Zeal with rangadder 4 is something to behold. He could zeal at both stairwells in front of Shenk at the same time! But, WW still ended up being his main attack. Zeal was nice for targeting single monsters, or dealing with mana burn. But, any other combat skill would have worked just as easily.

I will say, having a Rogue merc, hit blinds target was the greatest thing for her survival. Using WW, you're not really blocking any monsters from reaching merc. But, just whirling and keeping them blinded worked nicely.

She holds the title of my first ever mat posting, although she was like 5th character of this Sept.

She breezed through Normal with 1.07 crafted Khalim's, and Nightmare with a 'Passion' knout. Nightmare sure felt like I was doing fantastic damage with zeal, but turns out it was just DS.

For Hell difficulty, upgraded to a scourge, and donned some CB gear. 4 FPA zeal and 75% CB took care of any LI monsters. She's not quite as sturdy as I'd like though. Whenever possible, I'll probably upgrade to Mara's + CoH so I can drop 'Spirit' shield for Stormshield. Plan on doing some Baal runs with her. DS takes care of Lister/Minions very nicely!
