OT: What TV Shows/Anime are you currently watching?

We have a small hobby farm and a big family, so we don't get much time for TV let alone Diablo! But here's what I got going on:

TV Shows
  1. Westworld:
    My wife and I's favorite show. Though, lots of nudity and violence but she's handling it ok :) lol
  2. Stranger Things:
    This one is just "ok" for me. I was mainly interested because I've been following MK Ultra since I found my first conspiracy theory website... like a decade ago. Good show that keeps us interested but not my favorite
Anime

I actually do not watch much anime lol. In fact, none!
 
I started watching Stranger Thinks but it hasn’t really grabbed me.

Currently on the third book of the Gentlemen Bastards sequence by Scott Lynch. After ASOFAI and Patrick Rothfuss I swore never to read an unfinished sequence again, but found out on the internet that there are more books planned for this one. At least the stories are fairly self contained.

I actually wonder if GRRM will ever finish the sequence.

I hate to be too pessimistic, but I don't think there's any chance at all. I fully expect book 6 and no book 7. Gentlemen bastards is really fun! The third book was a bit polarizing though. Love to hear what you think of it when you finish it.

Ditto, couldn't get through more than 1 or 2 episodes. It being overhyped just made things worse.
 
I'm glad I caught Stranger Things before all the hype... I don't think there is any way it COULD live up to all the hype it's gotten.

That said, still need to binge the new season, but I mentioned not really feeling TV in my last post...
 
I'm a podcast guy, so I almost never consume product unless I have nothing to do and am sitting with my family, watching whatever they've got on (and I don't do anime).

The other day we checked out the first episode of NOS4A2 (after the little one went to bed, of course), which intrigued me a little bit, I'll probably check out more tonight.

This was an excellent series overall (though there were a few WTF moments and it did go downhill towards the end). Thanks @Drystan for recommending it.

Haha, glad you enjoyed it. I've only listened to the first 3-4 audiobooks I think, so don't know how the books compare with the audiobooks, or how the later books were, but it's an odd twist to the modern fantasy genre that I found refreshing, with very light-hearted, easy going writing style.

I do think with every series, things go down hill towards the end. From movies that just have one too many sequels, to novels, it's hard to keep something creative, fresh, and still the same, and relevant to the current time.
The Sword of Truth series mentioned above, I loved the first few books, but never finished the series, as it always seemed to go on, without getting anywhere.
Belgariad and Malloreon series, again, I love them, but the ending is something that just didn't work for me. (Without going into detail, the ending just made the entire series... Anti-climactic, like the events that took place didn't even really matter. Still love the books and story!)

Yeah I understand, books/tv shows/film sequels fall into a few different categories:
  • Story stretched too thin - should have finished sooner, but human greed got in the way and they wouldn't let go at the natural end point, so now they have ruined it's legacy.
  • Books with forgone conclusions - like the Belgariad series - loss of a sense of danger (understandable in a book marketed towards a younger audience)
  • Power creep - they've written themselves into a corner and to get out of it, they have to ruin stories or characters.
  • Filler - padding out a story (worse than 'stretching out too thin') this is just irrelevant stuff that should be cut.

I've noticed that shows like Stranger Things get me really hyped about a week prior to the new season and the day of release but after the season is over I don't think about them again for another year. I really love Stranger Things and I was thinking about this the other day when browsing Netflix. Not very many shows have made such a lasting impression on me that I watch them over and over.

I was bored the other day and was browsing Hulu when I came across Killing Eve. I binged the first season and immediately purchased the second season. Both seasons were amazing! I've watched both seasons twice within a week. I cannot recommend this show enough.

I've also discovered, binged and finished the Amazon Original Series, Patriot. There are only two seasons and unfortunately the show was canceled. Patriot has one of the best introduction songs I've ever heard. So much so that I've listened to it over 20 times this past week. Vashti Bunyan - Train Song

Season 3 of The Duece just released. I can't remember a lot of the details from the last season so I'm going to watch season 1 and 2 again before watching episode 1 of season 3.

I know this isn't a movie thread but I watched The Dead Don't Die and it was a pretty cool zombie movie. I know it got mixed reviews but honestly I would have paid to see it in the theater.
 
@MizzouFTW Yes Killing Eve was great! I believe @DaveW also mentioned it further up the thread, so there are a few of us who watched it.

Thanks for resurfacing this thread. I started watching a new-ish anime this week.

    So far only 9 episodes in, but I'm enjoying it. I binged all 9 episodes over the course of 2 evenings (they are only the standard 20 mins per episode).

It was OK. I didn’t really like it as much as the others, it seemed a bit short on action. Now I know it is not a trilogy but planned as a sequence of about seven, I suppose it is one of those “fill in the back story” books.

Currently I’m reading Birds, Beasts & Relatives, as my daughter was reading My Family and Other Animals for school. Looking forward to Joe Abercrombie’s new book which is released a week today - A Little Hatred. That will put me reading four Fantasy sequences which are not complete, but my bets are on this one to be finished first.

TV: Celebrity Masterchef and Great British Bake Off seem to be on permanently in our house at the moment, so not really. At least it isn’t Love Island.
 
@maxicek nice nice I really didn't like
how it turns out locke is some secret mage with hidden magical past. That really ruined the "us against the world" vibe that i got from these thieves facing off with the falconer.
But even so, I thought the book was fun enough to read and will read the next installment.

What is a little hatred? Is it in the first law world and is it a standalone? I don't want to look it up since i still havent read the 3 standalones yet (but soon :))

Agreed, it will be interesting to see how it pans out in the next book “The Thorn of Emberlain,” which I just discovered is also out tomorrow here.
Im also not sure about The Falconer thing at the end - Seemed a bit Terminator 2 to me.

@maxicek agreed completely on the ending. Ah nice I didn't know thorn was finally close to coming out. I'll probably be picking that up soon too then. Thanks for the tip. And sounds very cool on the abercrombie book. Will definitely check out in a handful of months when I'm done with the standalones.
 
Just finished A Little Hatred (very good) now giving The Black Company by Glen Cook a second attempt, I didn’t get very far last time.

@Luhkoh looks like I was out by 1 year on the Scott Lynch, it is September 2020 release. The sequel to A Little Hatred is out at the same time allegedly. Now reading four incomplete fantasy book series....

TV wise I have been watching Watchmen, although I’m not yet convinced. The comic was too good, I also enjoyed the film. Just not feeling the series fits well just yet.
 
@maxicek No problem on the GB date. I'm sure I'll pick it up whenever it appears, but I'm not chomping at the bit like with some other series :). Also I finally started the first law standalones. Read best served cold and really liked it. The ending was so good. And now I'm about halfway through the heroes, and must say I'm not digging it so far. Too bleak and not very personal. I hope you enjoy Black Company. I thought the first book was slow till about 50 pages in and then liked it, but book 2 was where I really thought the series got good.

I also started the cradle series by will wight, and while its more popcorn-read fast paced entertainment, I'm enjoying it immensely. Already finished the first 3 books (though they're short). Favorite series that I've picked up in the last year no doubt.

Also while playing D2 lately I watched through Dragonball GT. Loved Z as a youngster but never watched GT. Heard it wasn't very good, but I watched it anyway. And confirmed... it is indeed not very good :p.

I hope you enjoy it even half as much as I did, for then you'll be a fan. Did you make it as far as the Battle of Charm?
 
@Void Stalker First time around they were just running around the city in the heat, not very far at all. I was put off by the military style writing. I'm determined to finish it this time, i rarely quit halfway through. I read three Dune prequels, the writing talent clearly skipped a generation in the Herbert family.

@Luhkoh You need to read the standalones before A Little Hatred, there are lots of references.
