Has anyone ever experienced keybinds unbinding themselfs for no reason?
I had my Screenshot keybind on 'End' key since I'm playing on a laptop and PrtScrn requires 'Fn' key to be pressed and 'End' is conveniently placed furthest to the right just above the Arrow keys. At some point it unbinded itself and I missed a Screenshot on a Zod of all freaking things. Since then I rebinded it and today a Jah drops in Travincal. Just to be sure I wont miss another HR Screenshot I check the settings and what do you know - it was unbinded yet again.
Does this have something to do with 'End' being a "special" key or something? Because I've never had this happen before?
I have the same problem with F1 unbinding itself sometimes. Seems to be when I switch to a character that has that skill button bound to something else, then switch back. e.g. I have Skill 1 bound to F1 on some characters, and others have it as A. Sometimes the controls seem to set for multiple characters and other times not. I haven't done any real investigating on it though.
@srrw I have a similar experience to
@peytron
I normally bind screenshot to [ and ] but sometimes it seems to unbind. I missed a Zod screenshot in last year’s RFL because of this.
I’m also suspicious it has to do with switching to a character with different key setups.
So if I bind 'Screenshot' to 'End' on my Paladin and the switch to my Necro the bind will be gone? That's interesting but at least it makes sense. I will do some investigating when I get home. Thank you both.
I did some testing and it is bound to character. My Necro still had the 'End' key bound to Screenshot while my Pala had it bound to '5' (changed it for testing purposes).
Thank you all for the help.
To avoid this, many years ago I resolved to have a common set of key bindings across all characters and I keep a spreadsheet to make sure everything is consistent:
- The exact same key bindings are used in the 'controls' menu (i.e. I don't use 'F1' for one character and 'Q' for another, they all map to the exact same key plan so I always know which parts of the keyboard are 'live')
- Attacking skills always go in the same block and prebuffs always go in a different block of keys.
- For example all my Sorceresses have the same key binding for Teleport and all my Paladins have the same key binding for Holy Shield, so that I can rely on muscle memory.
Makes things a lot easier. Necromancers and Assassins tend to use the overflow key bindings but nobody else does.
I do exactly the same thing. And that's why I did not have this issue until I switched from PC to Laptop. It's the only re-bind I did from my original set of keybinds and it seems it only stuck with 2 characters - My Necro which I binded it to after I missed a screenshot and was wondering what happened and initially on one of my Sorcs. I should now go through all of my characters and fix this so I don't have problems in the future. And check if it's binded upon character creation automatically.
I usually use:
F1 F2 - Prebuff (F1), Summons (F2), Telekenesis (F2)
F3 F4 - BC. BO
E - Teleport if available, other mobility skill (Dragon Flight)
V - Main Right side skill (Blizzard, Fanaticism, Lightning Sentry etc.)
F A - Secondary Right side skill (Ice Blast, Fire Ball, Death Sentry, Vigor etc.)
D - Third Right side skill (Glacial Spike, Fire Blast etc.)
Q - Utility skills or Fourth Right side skill (Frost Nova, Secondary Curse, Secondary Attack, Cloak of Shadows etc.)
X S - If I run out of keys, usually for a Utility skill
Z - If I really run out of keys (Read: Assassin, Hybrid Sorc)
W - Switch
1 2 3 4 - Belt
This setup has worked for me for god knows how many years. It super easy to access all of the keys and I'm so intuitive about it at this points that I wouldn't ever change it. I tried using 'Space' for show items and found out I'm so addicted to 'Clear screen' I couldn't do it. But it was comfortable as hell I'll give it that.
Edit: I takes your last modified keybind settings for New Character creation and keeps the old ones for Every Individual Character. At least my not so throughout testing suggests that.
Edit2: @maxicek it might not be a bad idea to consider putting this post somewhere in the stickies to help others find the answer to disappearing keybinds.
