The Untwinked Level 99 Progress Thread, The Saviours of Sanctuary Rise Anew

Matriarch Redux (TZ), Blizz Sorc, and Durga the A2 HF Merc, Lvl 96
My playing time has dropped significantly due to work, but I've gotten small chunks of time here and there since June and ultimately got another level with Redux, pinging a couple weeks ago (but not having time to post an update here).

Actually, there's not much to update, as she did p8 CS runs unless AT or Rocky Waste (great map) were TZ when I could play, or p1 Meph TZ runs a handful of times. But no notable drops, except another IK armore from terrorized Meph. But-but, when CS was terrorized, wow, quite some XP there! Doing most of an hour got here nearly 2/10 of the level, and I finished the last 1/10 when I was able to play for the last half hour of a CS TZ.

I have quite some catching up to do on posts here, so looking forward to that. It doesn't look like work schedule will be changing any time soon. But I'm hoping things will ease up a bit in November and then I can focus on updating the Mat/Pat thread!

    And I blasted through the last 10% over the next 4 days. :cool:

  • Just afterwards, I realized I could cube up another Ohm, and could make Doom;
    so I thought I'd try it out.

    And it was an amazing improvement! Non-immunes already melted anyway,
    and CI's seem to die about twice as fast now.

    Slightly annoying that it took me ~3% of exp to find one ruby and one emerald...
    but it rolled superbly at -59% ;)

Final thoughts:
  • Getting to lvl 99 was a rather long journey for me;
    with 2 previously failed attempts with a Bowa and a Fishy.
    I'm rather glad that this incredibly overdue piece of project is finally over.

    Can't wait to start the next one. :D

  • Terror zones are an amazing addition to the game; allowing casual players like me to finally hit 99.
    But at the same time, it does seem to take away some sense of achievement,
    and now I have an even greater respect to all the other amazing members
    who got there the old fashioned way.

Matriarch Redux (TZ), Blizz Sorc, and Durga the A2 HF Merc, Lvl 97
Redux got another level, with small chunks of time since my level 96 update in August. As with the last, there's not much to update: I did almost exclusively TZ runs, focusing on CS, AT or Rocky Waste (which is still a great map), and a few Baal runs when WSK was up. Only notable item drops were Mal and Um, plus another Death Cleaver, and this nice charm upgrade:

The XP is still pretty nuts in TZ runs, as I finished the last 1/10 of the level on Christmas when Stony Tomb was terrorized, and with a break to make some tea during that hour, and even part of an hour of CS getting solid progress in whatever 1/10 of level I was in. As a result, I clearly didn't get much actual playing time with Redux over the last 4+ months, with work and focusing D2 time on finishing the 7x7+2.

I had not gone back to NM to socket Shako because I liked my map roll so much (Stony Tomb had great boss density and was super safe, and my CS roll was also very solid). But I decided to do that, and while I'm at it spend some time at NM Andy to get SoJ and the DClone. The time spent there would likely see her well into level 97 so that the XP bonus won't net out at this point, but I've never played BNet, and it sounds fun to try that quest.

I may also then give Ubers a shot, as that is also not something I've done and sounds fun. I used one set of keys earlier, with the A2 Merc, and couldn't take down any of the mini Ubers. But I think the A5 Merc with Lawbringer and something with Open Wounds (Crescent Moon? I have the runes) will work well enough with Treachery and Andy's. I haven't really done research, but it looks like there are some YouTube videos with pure Blizz sorc, so probably some other gear I haven't thought about. Either way, I'll report out on the outcome hopefully in the next update.

I took the liberty of shifting characters with last update from 2023 or earlier to Resting Heroes and, lo and behold! I'm nearly top of the Questing Heroes table now :D In all seriousness, it's gotten very quiet in this thread, and we may be finally winding down. But we'll see. Also added Hurricane_Syd (II) by @Kstil3227 to the Hall of Fame.

If it's the youtube video I'm thinking of, I believe it was done during the first ladder season where TZs and Sunder GCs were introduced. Cold mastery still worked at full strength against sundered cold immunes back then. Uber Baal/Diablo should be harder with a pure Blizzard sorc now that cold mastery is 20% effective against those 2.
Alternatively, the 1-to-Ubers Sorc speedruns have some good ideas. Revives from Harmony bow should make the mini ubers trivial, but Uber Tristram will be trickier.
 
Thanks for the feedback @Nano which aligns to my experience.

On Saturday, I ended up gearing to take on the mini-Ubers, swapping to A5 merc with Lawbringer/Coldsteel that I'd seen, with Andy's and Treachery, and was able to handle Lilith and Duriel with pure Blizz, and Bone Prison charges from Marrow. But Izual was completely unsolvable with regen outpacing Blizz damage, which didn't line up with that video. I then figured out that Cold Mastery was not as strong, and reassessed, using my one Token to respec to pure fire, which I was going to respec to for NM Andy and seemed likely to work well on Izual. Which it did :)

I then kept Fire build to use my second set of keys, and all three mini-ubers fell quickly. Because Fire build didn't seem good to farm essences to allow more respecs, I then shifted to NM Andy, managing ~550MF on kill switch with Gull. Oy, now I remember why I don't like single-target for a single item. Every green ring was an annoyance, and they came in fast supply, with two hours netting 25 green rings and only three golden early on. In total, we spent 12+ hours at NM Andy, with 28 unique rings falling before SoJ, so I think a little better than expected?

I was so annoyed at the green ring drops that I apparently failed to screenshot the SoJ. But she had also picked up a Tal's Ammy (didn't think they could drop from NM Andy, but I guess so?), which allowed the complete set. So after gearing on items, we had a fun little battle and quite the result!

After being SP and D2L for so long, I have to say this is pretty cool to have. Resists in particular are very helpful to cover in a single slot!

That said, the Meteor damage seems key to limit the regen. But the Fire Build seems dubious for Ubers, at least with the very mediocre +skills and not having great merc gear options. After spending a little time online, it looks like the A5 merc with a better secondary weapon would be doable, but I lack bases (I had only one 3os PB that went to Lawbringer and no 4os bows). With only two Uber run sets worth, I decided to respec to Blizz with my last quest respec and farm some Essences, to allow some optionality for switching builds for possible Ubers run.

But she's now almost half way into the first 1/10th of the level at this point, so I may just focus on TZ runs (including Key run areas, needing 5 more sets of Nihl mostly, but 3 Summoner also to allow 7 runs) with an eye to level 98, and pay attention to bases. I am looking forward to tackling the Ubers, but I'd also like to make sure I have a good plan and the right gear before doing so; maybe with the right drops, we'll give Ubers a shot along the way. I also have another project for the UT 99er thread, only into NM, so I will likely focus on that one when TZ timing doesn't line up during my limiting gaming windows.

Champion Vortices, Hammerdin, Level 86, A2 Might Merc Azreal (napping)
As alluded to in an earlier post, I started another 99er project, this one in D2L. After a second Sorc, the Pally is the next most straightforward from minimizing LK runs: only need Enigma, HotA, and CtA.

I started him mid-December, and he got to A2 NM by New Years, with spirit sword and no-resist 4os Pally shield, and a 4os Partizan Insight for the Merc. We pushed to Hell in an afternoon shortly after New Years, and then dig little chunks in the evenings after work, getting a Lum from a few Countess runs so the Merc had a Smoke to stay upright, and taking out Andy.

He sat for several weeks, then made it through A2 Hell a few evenings after work, until Feb 1, when we pushed into A3. He picked up a Gul, but ultimately pushed to A5 and Eldritch to level up to lvl 83 make LK runs smoother. HF was an Ist, and then Eldritch dropped a bomb with a 4os @45 ST that was QUITE the upgrade. We then returned to LK, with Vex and Ber the Vex+ drops, but also picking up Mal, Mal 2, and finally a Pul, to allow HotO (very nice roll!) and rerolling Spirit with the first yielding 35 FCR in the ST. So it's just needing an Ohm for CtA and two Ber equivalents.

Over the last two weeks, we had the Ohm dropping shortly, resulting in a subpar CtA (but still quite solid to have), and a first Sur., with a Lo from a boss pack earlier today. Mixed in were a Gul 2, Um, Ist, Pul 2, Gul 3, Ist 2, and Gul 4. He took out boss packs that blocked his progress, as a way to keep LK more engaging, moving from lvl 83 to current part way into 86.

Only three Surs to go, plus needing an elite 4os Polearm (and eventually eth) to make Merc viable. He's been left napping since lvl 83 because it was costing too much gold. My playing time is sporadic due to work, but I have been playing 10-20 min while having morning coffee a few days a week when I don't have to jump straight into work, so hopefully that can keep up.

@PhineasB you're a madman, that's awesome! What made you want to start the grind again? Congrats on the 45@ st. I never found one of those in lod (never got a rack with them and didn't do racking runs specifically for it). That one is HUGE.
 
Thanks @Luhkoh It was largely the constraint of lining up to TZs when I can play (which isn’t real, as she can just run CS and the Anni XP bonus would help). But once I got started and to LK, I found those runs a nice way to use 20-30 min chunks that I wasn’t motivated to do with Redux. And then once I got going, LK was fun, although I’m now hitting a bit of a wall.

But it’s really a function of liking the 99er progress, and having another 99er available to play. I plan to progress my twinked characters for Murios, but multiple options, when I have time, is still where it’s at for me. Some TZs line up tomorrow to get time for Redux, and I may start questing a third character in my twinked project this week. But there’s a little excitement knowing Vortices is sitting there in LK.
 
@PhineasB I’m also thinking about starting a Hammerdin, especially as it is min-LK.

I did wonder if it is possible to avoid LK completely on this project, for example running Trav with Barb.

I have the idea to make an un-twinkled sept that are 99 capable, so just doing things like not using sockets in the play through. Sorc, Amazon and Assassin already done. I would love to do a fire Druid but I’m put off by the rune expense, especially as Phoenix would be nice too. Wind Druid must be on a par with Hammerdin in terms of rune cost.
 
@maxicek that’s basically how I approached my untwinked 99er Sept, with the last three tourney entries where I didn’t use sockets during the playthrough. I think it’s definitely a great way to approach the next 99er, especially if you are keen on the Sept. If you get excited about one of them (or one drops a Jah in the Pit in A1H, then you can focus there at the expense of remaining characters!
 
Champion Vortices, Hammerdin, Level 87, A2 Might Merc Azreal
Vortices gained another level taking out packs that had trapped him in the huts, but got a much more significant upgrade:

When we left off in mid-February, he needed only three Surs for Enigma. We did another ~400 LK runs during the week before leaving for very nice week-long vacation, picking up Mal 3, Ist 3, Gul 5, Vex 2, and Sur 2, leaving him only a Sur shy of Engima, with enough to cube the Lo up to another Sur.

I got a couple hundred LK runs in the weekend after we got back, netting Pul 4, Vex 3, and Um 2, plus a fun Circlet that seemed to know I was running LK with a Hammerdin. I then had very little time to play due to crazy work, and could only muster 30 or so runs at a time before losing focus when I did have some chunks. But today I had a few hours of down time, so spent an hour in LK and bam, popable delivers!

I cubed up the two Bers to a Jah and the two Surs to Ber, and got the Enigma. I wasn't counting LK runs carefully, but I had a teleport staff, needing only one teleport for the first LK map, and then two for the second, and I kept track of repairs (although forgot to mark things down a few times). My guestimate is ~2000 LK runs for Enigma with Vortices, so relatively quick, which isn't surprising with the early Ber chest and then Ber poppable. All said, quite happy it didn't take 4000 runs :unsure:

I then rerolled maps, with the first one yielding stairs down after 8 or so teleports, and Meph delivered on the first run:

I also picked up a CV in LK, that rolled 4os in the cube, so a 4os Great Hauberk got 3 pAmmys to allow Azrael to equip the CV.

We are going to stay at Meph (probably going to reroll maps for an immediate stairs down, even though the juju on this one is great with the first-run Arachnids) for a couple hundred runs, hoping for Shako and/or some jewelry upgrades. Aldurs would be welcome, but I gambled 20 FRW / 40 FR boots, so not critical. After that, I may reroll LK maps looking for an elite Polearm rack in LK. But he may be ready to transition to CS quite early, and will likely be my RFL Round 2 entry.

@PhineasB awesome update! I actually just finished a very similarly short journey to enigma in my d2r restart. Was so lucky. Need to get a thread up! Arach first run is insannnne though and I’m jealous. Congrats! Looking forward to seeing his progress.
 
Champion Vortices, Hammerdin, Level 93, A2 Might Merc Azrael
As mentioned in last update, after the lucky Arachnid's on the first Meph run, we rerolled Meph maps for single teleport, lucking out with second reroll a teleport through the wall down to level 3 (picture taken before I rerolled the map):

We were a little past 87.1, so I decided to just run Meph on p1 to 88. Notables were Arachids #2 and #3 (third one being eth, to finally check that one off the eth grail) and BKWB, plus War Travellers (39) toward the end and Aldur's boots (44 FR) and Duriel's.

We were able to transition to CS, which we did at p3 to start. The Meph map was the hook for Vizier, so we rerolled to find the split version (this one had the Infector hook), and bumped to p5 when he hit 89, and then p7 at 90, before rerolling again to straight on both (and up to p8 at 91). And this map has a great RoF map, with 3-5 boss packs on most runs.

Notable drops for CS were an early Thresher that rolled 4os in cube, allowing Duriel's for the merc instead of pAmmy armor to wield CV and now max resists, The Grandfather, and then finally a second 5os normal weapon to allow CtA reroll that was solid:

We then got the first high rune of a Vex, followed by first eth elite armor that could get 4os (which obliged to become Fortitude with the Lo from LK), and a Mal. Earlier today a unique Spired Helm dropped, that was Nightwing's and a +2 skill headpiece that replaced to +2 pally combat circlet, and then this craft when he hit lvl 93:

We reshuffled charms to drop two 6 MF SCs and two 18 vita SCs in favor of a 15@ Shimmering GC and 5@ SC to account for 20@ lost from the charm slot, with limited resist rings available.

Only one skiller means he's a bit underpowered, but his progress has been smooth with no deaths since LK. Nice to haves would be Shako and Mara's, plus another +skill ring (and some skillers), and the merc needs an eth 4os elite polearm that will eventually drop. He's at 243% MF, so hoping a few drops come in short order :)

We'll see if he can get part way to 94 by RFL Round 2, but hoping to get him close to 95 by the end of that set.

So it's definitely been a bit since I've last updated Alanna, my LF amazon. I had previously stalled out a bit while running the ubers and then stopped playing D2 for a bit. I've been spending lots of time the past couple of weeks catching up, but most of that time was dumped into key farming and running ubers (more on that later). First up, a bit of a catch-up. Last update I had just gotten finished farming Mephisto for a Shako, got my Annihilus, hit level 90, and had everything I needed to start hunting for my Hellfire Torch.

First, however, I used Alanna to run terror zones, Pindle, and Baal for the 2023 MFO (netting a first place finish thanks in large part to two Astreon drops). In the process, I got her to level 94. After some key farming, I had her face the ubers for the first time. I took out Uber Mephisto with Charged Strike, relying on my sunder charm and Thunderstroke to take him down. I used a Life Tap wand on switch to keep up HP with jabs every now and then. Uber Baal was more of a challenge, due to his Chilling Armor punishing me for using Charged Strike. I still managed to get a couple of torches anyway, but for the wrong class.

After the 2024 RFL rounds, I took a break from D2 until a few weeks ago, and picked up where I left off. I did more key farming until I had enough for 7 torches, then had to spend some time farming pindle for full rejuvs as I had wiped them all out during her last round of uber farming. I struggled with Uber Mephisto more this time around, though that's likely because I focused on using a Lower Resist wand instead of Life Tap. Things would have gone much smoother if the decoy skill wasn't as bugged as it is now (with most decoys getting one-shot), but I after several runs I got more used to the fight and it wasn't so bad. I solved my issues with Uber Baal by the simple method of equipping a second Raven Frost and using thawing potions.

7 more torches, but none for amazons. When farming my next set of keys I had gotten an XP bump from the few times my targets were terrorized, so I took a break and leveled up to 95. Then it was back to the ubers. I had farmed 30 more sets of keys and gotten 10 more torches...again, no amazon torches. Another 30 keys later and tonight, at long last, my 26th Hellfire Torch finally rolled amazon:

I'm not concerned with the minimum stat roll, and don't plan on trying to upgrade it. 26 attempts is quite enough for now. I had also visited Andariel any time she was terrorized, hoping to find a Griffon's, but no luck yet. However, I did manage to get my first lightning facet, a second SoJ, and this excellent ring:

From here it's full speed ahead with leveling, focusing on Baal runs when the terror zones roll sub-optimal. First though, she'll be killing hordes of cows for the first round of this year's RFL.

Patriarch KalterHund, Necromancer, Level 89

I will finally add my necromancer to the party. After starting autumn 2023 and taking a longer break from D2 I started running LK again 2-3 months ago. I finally have the runes for both Enigma and Infinity and even found a 4 Socket ethereal Thresher in the Cows when he was gaining 2-3 levels and hoping for a JAH rune as cubing two BERs feels wrong. Started tracking the last BER. It took me 1170 runs with a SUR on run 121 and 1170. Enough LK for me. Maybe getting back for a BER for Beast but i need a break.
