OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

Nicely done! Flamethrower would've actually one shot Rhydon, methinks. Oh well. More drama! :p I'm surprised you can get something that strong from a solo for sure.

Togekiss is epic. The problem is Silver only has crappy Togetic. >_> Team just seems dangerously underleveled for the E4 and back half.

Silver is second generation, while Soul Silver is fourth generation. There's minor differences in plot movement between the games, but the most noticeable things are just generational gaps: graphics, natures, and all that stuff. SS has more legendaries and useful things in general, but the leaders have better move sets (?), the E4 has two iterations, and the final battle is much more ridiculous, as in:

All level 80+ with decent coverage and move sets. Silver has "only" 70-80, I think.

------

Rolled a Cyndaquil, and will start relatively soon. Silver, since SS requires DS instead of inconspicuous yet highly questionable phone. :badteeth:

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

You have Pokemon on your phone?
I'll pick up Silver later this week then, and thanks for the info. Sunset - you're on Silver too, or Soul silver?

Just a little comic I thought was amusing:

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

Dryst, I would pick Crystal instead. It's the 'Emerald' to the original Gold and Silver (Unless you meant Soul Silver on your phone?)

There is also a modded version of Fire Red that's called Liquid Crystal which is a remake of the original 2nd generation Crystal on the 3rd generation engine.

Generation I
Red
Blue
Yellow

Generation II
Gold
Silver
Crystal - This has improvements over G/S

Generation III
Ruby
Sapphire

FireRed
LeafGreen

Emerald - This has improvements over R/S/FR/LG

Liquid Crystal - Some guy has gone through the original Crystal and remade it using Fire Red with a lot of different pokemon available (I haven't played this yet - I'm doing a normal run through of LeafGreen using pokemon I don't normally use - none of my pokemon have fainted but I'm not using Nuzlocke rules either...)

Generation IV (Touchscreen needed from here onwards - hence smart phone/tablet probably needed)
Diamond
Pearl
Platinum

HeartGold
SoulSilver

Generation V

Black
White

Black 2
White 2

Generation VI

X
Y

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

@ioupain - where's the max on the end of your name?

Within the different generations, they're all the same story/locations, right? I know Red/Blue/Yellow are all Pallet Town to Victory Road, and I know Diamond/Pearl/Platinum all have the same story/locations. Are the rest of the games within each generation the same as well, but with different pokemon?

Man... Too many generations nowadays, too many versions! I'll find Crystal then. ^.^ Cheers.

If you know, what's the difference between Black and White, and Black 2/White 2, as they're in the same generation? Thanks!

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

They're pretty much all the same storyline within their respective colour palettes/metal etc. There is usually a pair that start off each generation and then they usually have a .5 release that slightly improves that generation with more available pokemon or legendaries or slightly altered storylines.

Yellow is basically Red/Blue but with slight modifications (follows the anime - you start with Pikachu and he follows you around)

Emerald is basically Ruby/Sapphire but with slightly improved gameplay modifications (some abilities have overworld uses like compound eyes increases the chance a pokemon will be holding an item; you can also catch more legendaries and more Kanto pokemon etc.)

FireRed/LeafGreen are remakes of Red/Green (Japanese had Green but it's basically Blue) using the Ruby/Sapphire engine. These predate Emerald so they don't have it's improvements.

Platinum is the equivalent of Emerald for it's generation

and I haven't played any generation IV/V/VI since I prefer the old games and can't be bothered with touch screens etc.

Note: This is my original account from way back when. I'm logged into a different browser that had this login and password saved so I just used it.

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

@Drystan - Yes. Join me in Silver! Not Soul Silver. Not Crystal (Free Suicune, where's the challenge there?). As NagisaFurukawa pointed out, Togetic is as far as it gets in Silver. I have actually used a Togetic as a fighter before (psychic, fire blast, fly, metronome), and it's not very good, at all. Misty will be kept in reserve to fly around on. Unless something horrible happens. In which case I will tame that Golbat and fly on Crobat.

@NagisaFurukawa - I hope so too. I will definitely have to level up some more before moving on. I could buy coins at the game corner and get a Thunder TM for my Voltorb to have some Electric coverage, but Voltorb/Electrode has terrible defense, so that might not be a wise investment. If I can get a Water Stone and evolve the poliwag to poliwrath before 30, it will learn Submission. Poliwrath is strong and can learn both Surf and Ice Punch. I have a Koffing that I caught in the burned tower; it could someday become a rest-sleeptalk-fireblast-sludgebomb pokemon, and Weezing's defenses aren't too bad. Long story short: some grinding ahead.

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

So, I played some more:

Taught Circe Whirlpool. Got the Dragon Fang (8 badges) in the Dragon's Den. Encountered a magikarp there. Oh well.
Got the Master Ball from Professor Elm. Ah, options!
Told Mom to save money, just in case she decides to buy a water stone for me. (Looked this up, she can't buy elemental stones. Oh well)
Rin got a haircut. He looks happy.
Dr.Cliche forgot Selfdestruct and learned Headbutt. I did a thorough check of my notes and discovered a few places where I hadn't yet encountered a pokemon.
Headbutted a tree in Azalea, sadly it was Weedle.
Had no luck headbutting trees in Ecruteak, so I surfed there. Caught a Poliwhirl, named Liz. Liz will probably just use whirlpool and waterfall.
There are no encounters for headbutting trees in Mahogany. I was sad to learn this.
Bought 25 super repels, going to try to Master Ball Lugia. It took 3 super repels to get to Lugia. I got a little lost in the Whirl Islands.
Used the Master Ball and named Lugia Juni.
Bought Thunder for Dr.Cliche

Time to level up! Headed towards Victory Road.

Used a Calcium that I found on Tiamat to power up Surf even more.
Dr. Cliche has the exp share, and evolved into Electrode
Mom bought something with my money, I wonder what? Super Potion...
Caught Doduo on Route 26 - Tetris
Fought a trainer with a Rapidash who had lost to a strong trainer named Drystan "Pokemon aren't tools of war," she said. hmm
Mom bought something else - Repel... Gee, thanks
Caught Onix on Victory Road - Brock
Turns out Mom can't buy elemental stones...

Taught Tetris Fly, boxed Misty
Leveled up some more on Route 45 by Surfing Gravelers.
gave Rin the exp share, but he wasn't very much happier after reaching 23 and learning Quick Attack.
A Shiny Geodude used Selfdestruct on Tiamat; she survived

Got a few levels. Going to Victory Road (to complete it) next.

Thwomp - Graveler 37
Tiamat - Gyarados 40
Rin - Eevee 23
Dr. Cliche - Electrode 34
Liz - Poliwhirl 20 (Whirlpool and Waterfall)
Tetris - Dodrio 31

New Captures:
caught surfing in Ecruteak - Poliwhirl = Liz
caught with the Master Ball in Whirl Islands - Lugia = Juni
caught on route 26 - Doduo = Tetris
caught on Victory Road - Onix = Brock

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

A shiny!?!?! and it used self destruct!?!?! Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

I know right? It's only the third shiny I have ever run into! Or maybe only the second. I had a shiny Butterfree once. The red gyarados doesn't count.

Defeated Drystan at Victory Road
Thwomp got a critical hit on Sneasel with Fire Punch

Leveling up in Victory Road, Jamming to Pokemon March on the Radio
Thwomp Learned Earthquake
Taught Juni Dragonbreath
Rin leveled to 29 without evolving. I guess he'll be sitting out for the Elite 4.
Or not. I do not want to grind forever. The time is now.
Bought a bunch of Full Restores
Used 4 rare candies on Juni

Begin Elite Four:
Full Team Stats going in:
Thwomp - Graveler 41
holding: Quick Claw
Earthquake
Rock Throw
Fire Punch
Rollout

Tiamat - Gyarados 42
holding: Mystic Water
Surf
Strength
Bite
Dragon Rage

Rin - Eevee 29
holding: Nothing
Quick Attack
Tail Whip
Sand-Attack
Growl

Dr.Cliche - Electrode 37
holding: Magnet
Thunder
Screech
Light Screen
Headbutt

Juni - Lugia 44
holding: Dragon Fang
Aeroblast
Dragonbreath
Gust (then Fly)
Recover

Tetris - Dodrio 34
holding: Sharp Beak
Pursuit
Fly
Tri Attack
Rage

Elite Four play by play:
Dr.Cliche used Thunder and Light Screen to great effect against Will's Psychic pokemon.
Tiamat used Bite on Exeggutor and Slowbro
Dr. Cliche was slain by Will's Xatu, psychic
Tiamat avenged Dr.Cliche's death with Bite.
Thwomp missed Koga's Ariados with Earthquake and died to GigaDrain
Tetris avenged Thwomp by getting a critical hit with Fly
Forretress Exploded on Tetris, 1hitKO
Tiamat finished off Koga's pokemon
Taught Juni Fly
Tiamat used an Elixer
Juni Aeroblasted Bruno's Hitmontop
Tiamat Surfed Onix, then Juni used Fly to defeat the rest of his pokemon
Tiamat used Dragon Rage on Karen's Umbreon
Tiamat used Surf and drank lots of hyper potions.
Juni Aeroblasted Karen's Vileplume
Tiamat overpowered Lance's Gyarados with Strength
Juni defeated thunder dragonite and blizzard dragonite
Tiamat was slain by Aerodactyl's Rock Slide
Juni got Hyperbeamed by Aerodactyl
Hurray for Recover!
Juni Aeroblasted Lance's Charizard
Juni used Dragonbreath to deliver the killing blow to Outrage Dragonite
Juni and Rin are champions! Everyone else is dead.

After Elite Four:
Rin - Eevee 29
Juni - Lugia 46

Thwomp, Tiamat, Dr.Cliche, and Tetris will be forever memorialized in the Hall of Fame.

I'm really happy that I won. I didn't really expect to lose almost all my pokemon doing it though. That could've been avoided by grinding everyone to lvl 45 or even 50. When I started this challenge, I was so sure I would die early on. I'm so glad I made it through, although I'm sad that it was with a Legendary in the end. I think I will continue and do Kanto as well. Wish me luck!

No new captures.

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

Nice job, though it's horribly sad to see all the casualties. :( Good luck with Kanto. The hell is only beginning.

Silver feels so old. :badteeth: Trainer name is Riki, and starter is Lennon the Totodile. Rolled a Cyndaquil originally, but died a miserable death to a super effect critical hit Hidden Power from an Unown, so rerolled and restarted.

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

I will go for Silver, just so I'm on the same level as both of you.
But only after I finish LeafGreen, and there seems to be a lot of extra areas... Fairly small, but a decent addition to Blue/Red/Yellow. FireDancer will surely reach level 100, sinces she's the only one used in battle. And if not, I'll finish her for the sake of finishing her. :)

*FireDancer is female! I've got to remember that.

Edit: What the hell is a Smeargle? Reminds me of Gollum... I've played Platinum, and it doesn't ring a bell to me.

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

Thanks! It seems to be true that the hell is only beginning.

@Nagisa - super effective critical hit hidden power, that's certainly an unexpected turn of events. Good luck with your Totodile!

@Drystan - hurray for Silver. Good luck to FireDancer on reaching 100!
Smeargle is a normal type pokemon with a paintbrush for its tail. It can be caught outside the Ruins of Alph. Every 10 levels it learns Sketch, which can be used in battle to permanently copy the opponent's last used move. But if you get one, you should totally name it Gollum now. =)

Ok, let's go!
Taught Brock Dig and Strength
Taught Circe Surf
Erin is coming along too.
Got Viola too since I may need to cut something.
Rin is friendly towards me. He looks sort of happy. He's calm about most things.
Brock is now holding the Quick Claw of Destiny
Circe has the exp share because Surf is the fastest way to level
Time to level this team up to 30ish.

Viola - Beedrill 19
Circe - Tentacool 20
Rin - Eevee 29
Erin - Golbat 22
Brock - Onix 36
Juni - Lugia 46

Got TM5 - roar (had missed it earlier) and TM26 - earthquake

It occurs to me that if I had leveled up Before the Elite 4, I wouldn't have to level a whole new team now. Irony.

Circe made it to 30 and evolved into Tentacruel.
She was faster than the Onix in Victory Road, so she was at the front of the party, ready to earn her own experience for a change.
Then, her Surf just barely failed to kill a Donphan, which used Flail to kill her in one shot. Darn.

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

Some things have happened.
Taught Surf to Tatsumasa
Ran into a wild Tentacool on the way back from Indigo Plateau and was sad
Took the SS Aqua to Vermillion City
Juni smashed all opposition; Erin has the exp share
Caught Psyduck on Route 6 - Elan
Brock used Dig against a bunch of rollout electrodes in the electric gym
Dig dodged a voltorb's selfdestruct, nice
Taught Elan Surf; using him instead of Tatsumasa cause I really want that water stone --> poliwrath with submission
Brock killed Lt.Surge's Raichu with Sandstorm
Brock survived many exploding electrodes and went on to win Thunderbadge

After Lt.Surge (9 badges)
Viola - Beedrill 19
Rin - Eevee 29
Erin - Golbat 30
Brock - Onix 37
Juni - Lugia 50
Elan - Psyduck 17

Made it to Saffron (this was not hard)
Got the Focus Band. Rin is holding on to it.
Got TM29 - Psychic
Gave the Amulet Coin to Juni to continue to crush other's dreams for profit
A Vulpix on Route 8 used Roar after 2 Ultra Balls didn't catch it =(
Made it to Lavender Town (also not hard)
Came to pay my respects to the dead at the soul house
Got the Super Rod
Used 2 calciums on Juni
Taught Elan Ice Punch
Caught Pidgeotto on Route 14 - Maxwell
Caught Nidorina on Route 15 - Zelda
Caught Drowzee on Route 11 - Phobos
used a pp up on Juni's Aeroblast

Got the Rainbow Badge and GigaDrain

After Erika (10 badges)
Viola - Beedrill 19
Rin - Eevee 29
Erin - Golbat 30
Brock - Onix 38
Juni - Lugia 53
Elan - Golduck 34

Caught Fearow on Route 17 - Liliana
Caught Abra on Route 5 - Deimos (Hurray!)
Made it to Cerulean
Caught Arbok on Route 4 - Jesse
Caught Sunkern on Route 25 - Kibler
Remembered that you only get the elemental stones by showing the old man specific pokemon. He wants to see a Lickitung. Guess I am out of luck there.

so... both Drowzee and Kadabra can learn thunder punch and ice punch, sweet
Hypno is a more solid choice, but Kadabra is one of my favorites...
crobat can learn gigadrain

Elan is now surfing on Victory Road to train Deimos, the abra
Deimos evolved into Kadabra
Deimos is now lvl 38 and also knows Thunderpunch, for what it's worth
Going to attempt Fuchsia Gym
Deimos's psychic reigned supreme

After Janine (11 badges)
Rin - Eevee 29
Erin - Golbat 32
Brock - Onix 39
Juni - Lugia 54
Elan - Golduck 47
Deimos - Kadabra 40

Went through Rock Tunnel to the Power Plant. Misty used Flash to light the way, then went back to hiding in the box.
Got the machine part in cerulean and teleported back to the power plant =)
Got Zap Cannon
Taught Deimos Thief instead of Teleport
got the kanto radio card
Deimos stole Leftovers from Snorlax
Snorlax used Body Slam
Deimos Fainted =(
Juni avenged Deimos with Aeroblast
so, now the way to Diglett's Cave is clear.
Phobos the Drowzee attempts to replace Deimos.
Caught Diglett - Cocoa
Got the Rainbow Wing in Pewter.
Elan used Surf. Boulderbadge get.

Route 5 - Abra - Deimos
Route 4 - Arbok - Jesse
Route 25 - Sunkern - Kibler

Maria, Flaaffy - slain by Schoolboy Chad's Mr. Mime, Confusion critical hit
Marth, Quilava - slain by Blackbelt Yoshi's Hitmonlee, hi jump kick
Strix, Hoothoot - slain by Blackbelt Yoshi's Hitmonlee, hi jump kick
Ganondorf, Great Nidoking of Evil - slain by Clair's Dragonair, Ice Beam

Tiamat, Gyarados - slain by Lance's Aerodactyl, Rock Slide
Circe, Tentacruel - slain by A Donphan's Flail on Victory Road
Deimos, Kadabra - slain by Snorlax's Body Slam after stealing Leftovers

I'm so good at losing awesome pokemon. =(

Champion SunsetV, 12 Badges, always rebuilding
I think I will be able to get all the badges. I might not be able to defeat Red though.
I'm going to see if I can catch a houndour on Route 7 tonight. And I'll get a Moonstone at Mt. Moon for Zelda.

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

More things have happened.
Caught Murkrow on Route 7 - Molly
Elan disabled its Pursuit, then Phobos came in with Hypnosis.
used 5 ultra balls and 15 great balls, finally caught it with... A lure ball
Got the Rail Pass
Drystan ambushed me on Mt Moon!
My team prevailed, with no deaths. Drystan swore he would beat me someday.

Visited Professor Oak in Pallet
Caught Tangela south of Pallet - Edward
A swimmer on route 21 said she was just going to put some sunblock on - at night
Encountered a Shiny Tentacruel while surfing by Cinnabar
Caught it! Naming it Zegana, but it will not be used

Juni - Lugia 55
Elan - Golduck 50

Oh right, Silver Cave needs Flash
First encounter in the Silver Cave was a graveler, oh well

Route 19 - Staryu - Astra
Route 28 - Ponyta - Zorro

No additional deaths!

Things left to do:
Catch/defeat Ho-oh
Battle Red in the Silver Cave

Both things require leveling into the high 60's or 70's.
That's tons of Elite Four grinding, especially since I wasted my Thief before stealing a Lucky Egg from Chansey.
I don't think I want to do that. So I think this is the end of this run for me.

Champion SunsetV, 16 Badges, Finished?

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

Sunset said:
caught Staryu on Route 19 - Astra
I always wanted to train a Starmie. It can learn Recover, which I think would be a great move in some battles. Maybe not strong in later generations because of the super-effective moves to pokemon they're weak against, but I still think Starmie could be pretty strong.

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

Might as well take on Red just for kicks. :p Nicely played.

Starmie is really good, but Water Stone. T_T

Made a little progress. No update until a bit further in. Kind of debating whether to bash trees in hopes for that 0.000001% chance of a Heracross. Most likely just a lot of Spearow/Aipom (?), but could be worth trying if others aren't dying.

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

@Drystan - Starmie is good. It has speed and special attack, and just enough defense to survive a hit or two. Yes, it does get Recover. It can also learn Surf, Psychic, and Thunder. Water stone, though.

@NagisaFurukawa - Thanks. =) You can catch Heracross from headbutting a tree in Azalea Town. There's no other way to encounter pokemon there besides using Headbutt, so that's probably the best chance.

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

Ah, yes. Headbutting in towns sounds like a nice idea. Will you try another, or is that enough for now for you? :p

Captures:
New Bark Town: Totodile (Lennon)
Sprout Tower: Rattata (Kud)
Violet City: Togepi (Hitler)
Route 33: Hoppip (Saya)
Route 34: Drowsee (Sasami)
National Park: Paras (Futaki)
Route 36: Sudowoodo (Mio)
Goldenrod City: Eevee (Fabre)

Active:
Lennon: Croconaw (22)
Mio: Sudowoodo (22)
Saya: Skiploom (22)
Kud: Raticate (23)
Fabre: Eevee (20)
Hitler: Togepi (5)

Deceased:
-

Riki and Lennon started off fine, but Kud was added out of necessity to deal with Sprout Tower. It turns out that was for the best, as she packs an insane punch with her decent attack/speed and STAB'd normal attacks. Falkner went down easily. Not sure if that should even qualify as a gym.

Lennon had a field day in Union Cave, leaving him in good position to deal with Bugsy. His stat distribution sucks, but at least his decent attack rating makes Rage all the better. The rival popped up out of nowhere, and his Zubat proved highly annoying with Supersonic. Almost took out the team by itself. :badteeth:

Worked on leveling Saya a bit in Ilex Forest. Why does she only know Splash again? Not even a Magikarp effect upon leveling. She is probably my favorite though. Absolutely horrendous typing and stats, but an eventual movepool destined to annoy anyone.

Kud somehow managed to solo Whitney. Miltank is apparently faster (??), but a Quick Attack after barely surviving a few exchanges of Hyper Fang and Rollout finished the job.

Tried the bug contest, failed miserably. Saya managed to get in a Sleep Powder on the suspicious tree before it, presumably, killed her with Rock Throw, leading to an easy catch. Backtracked for Fabre, and took on the rival. Zubat once again almost wrecked everything. Go figure. Enjoyed the huge EXP from the dancers, picked up Surf, and called it a day at the gym entrance.

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

I saw the posts on the last page and played a good way through LeafGreen, only to find out that you switched games in what, less than 10 days? What a bummer. Oh well. :p

I won't be able to keep up with that pace for the next one, either (particularly since I have never played Silver, so it would all be brand new). I think it's a cool "tournament," though, and I will keep checking out your progress.

EDIT: Congrats on the single character attempt. Years ago I did blue/red with a single Charizard and then again with a single Nidoking/queen (I can't remember which), and both were fun plays. PP was always the troublesome part.
