OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

i do indeed have the cartridge. which means i need to wrestle the wife off her bejeweled to play.
so far i have:

oshawott's 2nd form lvl 18. water starter
pidove lvl 20
lillipup's 2nd form lvl 20.

thats all i'm using atm. i'm just going to catch everything i can and use whichever i want seeing as i don't know any of the pokemon.
the lack of a decent viridian forest/ mt moon section early on means i've had to do alot of random wild encounters to level up. nearly lost oshawott to a preschooler....

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

Oshawatt? *googles* That thing looks similar to Piplup to me...

"nearly lost oshawott to a preschooler...."
LoL!

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

them preschoolers were nasty. i was just lucky that the teacher healed me.

the first gym uses whichever type your starter is weak against. so grass in my case but you get given a monkey pokemon which is weak to your starter which makes the circle complete. so i smashed him with a pansear.
want to get my 3 dudes to lvl 20 before tackling gym two. the lack of a long adventure/trainer bit is disspointing and i hope itis not a feature of the game. the long slogs in blue was the highlight imo. not knowing if you'd last the distance.

[highlight]Round 2 - Pokemon Leaf Green[/highlight]

Ok, so for some reason recently, Zokar's avatar reminded me of Pokemon, and the Nuzlocke Challenge we did last year, and I posted a comment that I was feeling somewhat nostalgic again, and considered giving this another go. I soon realised that Zokar's avatar looks a bit like Piplup, and had a conversation with Twibz about this challenge. Together we would like to give this another shot, and that is what has triggered me to revive this thread. Together, we will be going through LeafGreen, Nuzlocke Style rules.

LeafGreen is basically a remake of Blue, but with an added area at the end, and ideas from later generation. This includes moves (there's now solid flying-type moves, which gives grass-type a decent weakness, and Natures, which give one stat a positive boost and one a negative boost.

Hopefully, Twibz will be along shortly to join in. If anyone else would like to join up, feel free to at any time; check the Nuzlocke rules in post #1, follow along with progress, or just let this thread be - it's all good. Perhaps a new thread will be made early on if we feel it warrants one, but I'm happy to keep this here. Post#1 has been updated to link to this post for the second Challenge.

My character will be named Drystan, and my rival will be Twibz. As with before, my starter will be randomised by random.org (5 numbers output between 1 and 3, with the middle number being my starter.)

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

Round 1 was basically a test to see how it worked, and was quite a fun challenge. Definitely felt it when I lost a member of my team of Gods/Goddesses. Why is HG/SS so annoying? Would you join in if we tried a different version? I was intending to do Platinum, but LeafGreen is good - at least I have some idea of where to go and the more difficult points.

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

Miltank. :badteeth: It's just hard to get enough EXP for most things, especially that hellish team Red employs. Well, any such problem can be fixed with excessive grinding, but that's no fun. Kind of (personally) feels nice to have everyone be at least reasonably similar in level as well, which sucks early on.

I failed White 2 at the very first gym (!) a few weeks ago. Work Up too strong. Might give it another when time avails.

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

I've never used a Miltank, nor know what Red uses, so I'll take your word that it's pretty tough. Would you join us if we gave that a shot next?

Part 1: The Beginning

Well, Random.org rolled a 3, meaning I choose you, Charmander, nicknamed FireDancer. Twibz thought he'd take one better than me, and chose a Squirtle. Still, FireDancer Growled a few times, and then Tackled Squirtle to the ground, comfortably winning our first battle.
First random encounter was a Rattata, which means no capture for Route 1. What a shame! From there, I completed the mini-Pokedex quest, and saved.

Charmander... lol. Best of luck with that. T_T

I'll give LG a whirl between classes. Kind of curious how Nuzlocke plays out without EXP Share, especially on set instead of shift. It's been a while since attacks were simple (physical/special by type alone!) as well.

Let's see how long the motivation for this lasts...

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

You don't seem to think Charmander is an easy starter. I don't know much about the different Pokemon games, but I thought in the early generations, they were all reasonable. What do you mean by "set" and "shift"?
Playing at emulation *2 speed, and progressed to Brock. Knocked out my chances at a Rattata on Route 22, but nabbed a Pidgey (Gust Swirl) on Route 2 and a Caterpie (Flutterfly) in Viridian Forest. I'll start to post levels from now on.

Edit: Hmm. Wow. Brock's Onix just kinda... dominated my team early on. Yeah, I'll go for a restart and reroll later. At least it was early on!

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

Set - you don't get to change pokemon when the other trainer does. This limits the auto-type matching you can do, so it's harder.
Shift - "Trainer is about to use pokemon, would you like to switch?"

I read this whole thread. I'm thinking of trying it with Silver, which is my favorite. I did the random red/blue too recently to do that one again.

The warning about that Miltank has been taken to heart.

Edit: How did you guys decide what to name your rival? Was it just the person who had posted in the thread before you?

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

Please excuse the double post.

I began a Silver Nuzlocke Challenge. My trainer name is SunsetV.
Random.org gave Cyndaquil, I named him Marth.

caught route 46 = spearow - Falco
caught Dark Cave = Geodude - Thwomp
caught Sprout Tower = rattata - Sophie
received Egg in Violet City = togepi - Misty
caught route 32 = Mareep - Maria
caught route 33 = hoppip - Radish
caught Ilex Forest = kakuna - Viola
caught Slowpoke Well = zubat - Nivea
caught in New Bark town fishing = magikarp - Tiamat

failed encounter route 29 = sentret (no pokeballs)
failed encounter route 30 = weedle (no pokeballs)
failed capture route 31 = kakuna, ko'd by Falco
failed encounter Union Cave = rattata (duplicate)

Obtained Flash from the Sprout Tower Elder, Falco's Peck was nice there.
Falkner was defeated by x-speed, Thwomp's Rock Throw, and Sophie's Quick Attack
Taught Marth Mud-slap

Saved on Route 32, after fighting some very violent fishermen:
Marth - Cyndaquil 11
Falco - Spearow 10
Thwomp - Geodude 12
Sophie - Rattata 9
Maria - Mareep 10
Egg

Defeated Rival Drystan (no offense), with heavy casualties.
Togepi hatched from its egg in Ilex Forest while I was chasing Farfetch'd.
Taught Swift to Nivea and leveled to 12 to learn Bite
Taught Cut to Viola and leveled to 12
Defeated Bugsy using Thwomp, now lvl 16 and learned Magnitude.

After Bugsy, 2 badges, can now use Cut outside of battle:
Marth - Quilava 16
Thwomp - Geodude 16
Maria - Mareep 13
Viola - Beedrill 12
Nivea - Zubat 12
Tiamat - Magikarp 10

The Fallen:
Falco - slain by Hiker Anthony's Machop, Low Kick, critical hit. I really didn't want his phone number after that.
Radish - slain by Drystan's Croconaw, Scratch
Sophie - slain by Drystan's Zubat, Bite

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

That's some fast progress. :badteeth: Lucky catch with Mareep as well.

Rolled a Squirtle and failed immediately at an unexpected rival battle. I don't remember him being there... or having 2x level 9 that early. Had just a level 7 starter, so not much time lost. Rolled another Squirtle, and will work on it later.

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

@NagisaFurukawa - Thanks! I was happy to catch it. But...

Made it to goldenrod and got a bike!
gave Nivea a haircut
bought ice punch tm but no one can use it
Maria learned Thunderwave, this was important against a trainer's Kadabra
yay lemonade! My pokemon are addicted to Soda Pop.
Maria equipped the Quick Claw
Nivea was slain by Rollout =(
Maria used Thunderwave and Growl on Miltank
Ganondorf used Leer and Double Kick on Miltank ftw, attract was annoying

After Whitney:
Marth - Quilava 19
Thwomp - Geodude 20
Maria - Flaaffy 19
Viola - Beedrill 18
Tiamat - Magikarp 10
Ganondorf - Nidorino 20

Ganondorf double-kicked Sudowoodo (I couldn't catch it, I'd already had an encounter there)
Sunny gave me a Magnet on route 37
Ann and Anne's Clefairy metronomed Hyper Beam, which thankfully did not kill Ganondorf
Taught Marth headbutt
Fought Drystan in the Burnt Tower
Thwomp did not learn Self Destruct
Defeated Drystan
Maria was slain by a critical hit confusion on route 37
Dr. Wily the Magnemite replaced her
Thwomp now carries her Quick Claw so that she will never be forgotten
Beat the kimono girls and got surf, but Tiamat is only lvl 17

After Kimono Girls (3 badges):
Marth - Quilava 21
Thwomp - Geodude 21
Viola - Beedrill 18
Tiamat - Magikarp 17
Ganondorf - Nidorino 22
Dr.Wily - Magnemite 16

New Catches:
caught in route 35 = nidoranM - Ganondorf
caught in National Park = hoothoot - Strix
caught in Burned Tower = koffing - Phazon
caught in route 37 = magnemite - Dr.Wily

The Fallen:
Falco - slain by Hiker Anthony's Machop, Low Kick, critical hit
Radish - slain by Drystan's Croconaw, Scratch
Sophie - slain by Drystan's Zubat, Bite
Nivea - slain by Whitney's Miltank, Rollout
Maria - slain by Schoolboy Chad's Mr. Mime, Confusion critical hit

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

Made it to Olivine, got Strength and the Good Rod
Met Monica, got Sharp Beak
tried to catch a Krabby in Olivine, but a magikarp took the bait instead
Tiamat evolved into Gyarados! Taught her Surf and Strength
Dr.Wily learned Thunder wave
Fought to the top of the lighthouse
Marth's ember was more than a match for Morty's ghosts

After Morty (4 badges)
Marth - Quilava 25
Thwomp - Geodude 24
Viola - Beedrill 18
Tiamat - Gyarados 20
Ganondorf - Nidorino 23
Dr.Wily - Magnemite 23

I think I might switch Viola out for Strix the hoothoot in preparation to learn Fly. Hypnosis will also be nice to catch things with.
Got Eevee in Goldenrod - Rin, future Umbreon (hopefully) or maybe Espeon...
Where will I get a moonstone for Ganondorf?
Surfed to Cyanwood
Marth and Strix fell in battle in the Fighting Dojo. I forgot their pokemon were such high level! =(

Delivered the Medicine to Jasmine.
Steelix missed Tiamat with Rock Throw twice in a row! Yay Surf!

After Jasmine (5 badges)
Thwomp - Graveler 25
Viola - Beedrill 18
Tiamat - Gyarados 23
Ganondorf - Nidorino 23
Dr.Wily - Magnemite 27
Rin - Eevee 20

I really messed up bad. I should have surfed East of Ecruteak first. Then maybe Marth wouldn't have died.
Taught Thwomp Fire Punch
Made it to Mahogany. Why didn't I come here first? Argh!
Right now, the only pokemon I have that will be able to fly is Misty when she evolves to Togetic.

New Catches:
caught Olivine Harbor = tentacool - Circe
received Eevee from Bill in Goldenrod - Rin
received Shuckle from Mania in Cyanwood - Shuckie

The Fallen:
Falco - slain by Hiker Anthony's Machop, Low Kick, critical hit
Radish - slain by Drystan's Croconaw, Scratch
Sophie - slain by Drystan's Zubat, Bite
Nivea - slain by Whitney's Miltank, Rollout
Maria - slain by Schoolboy Chad's Mr. Mime, Confusion critical hit
Marth - slain by Blackbelt Yoshi's Hitmonlee, hi jump kick
Strix - slain by Blackbelt Yoshi's Hitmonlee, hi jump kick

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

Marth. :( I never really understood the intended order of gyms 5-7. Kind of surprised you made it through Jasmine with such an underleveled team. The power of type advantages...

--------------------------

Began again with Leaf Green, and made it through most of Mt. Moon. Trainer name is Kotori.

Starter: Squirtle (Chibimoth)
[strike]Route 1: Rattata[/strike]
Route 22: Spearow (Gil)
[strike]Route 2: Rattata[/strike]
[strike]Viridian Forest: Kakuna[/strike]
[strike]Route 3: Spearow[/strike]
Mt. Moon: Geodude (Rikako)

Active:
Chibimoth: Wartortle (20)
Rikako: Geodude (18)

Deceased:
Gil: Spearow (6)

Gil kicked the bucket to a wild Rattata... yes. Kind of assumed one Tail Whip wouldn't weaken him enough to lose 50% HP from a Tackle... wrong! Viridian Forest would've been a tad easier with him[strike], but I really wanted a Mankey from Route 22 anyway[/strike].

Many failed captures. Accidentally killed the second rat, and had no ball for the first one. Raticate is decent, so that was a shame. Did not feel like bothering with a level 5 Kakuna, and already had a dead Spearow.

It bugs me to death to be using a horribly slow thing as Rikako, but she's cleaning house in Mt. Moon, and she'll be really useful against future gyms... assuming she lasts. No coverage for Erika yet, which is troublesome. Do not want the equally slow Flareon.

Aside from that, there's running shoes in third generation! Whee.

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

@pharphis - yeah, poor Marth. I was pretty upset for a while.

@NagisaFurukawa - I got so lucky against Jasmine with her Rock Throw missing twice. I was, uh, blind with grief from the loss of my starter due to my own stupidity, so I was taking a big risk there. You've made some nice progress, too. Maybe Gil will be reborn as a Mankey in some other life. Between Surf and potential future Earthquake on your team, it's looking good!

Viola hacked her way through the thickets of Lake of Rage to acquire TM 10: Hidden Power
Tiamat defeated the red Gyarados with Strength
found a PP up, used on Tiamat's Surf
Traded the Red Scale to Mr. Pokemon for the Exp Share
equipped exp share on Misty
Got the Mystic Water, equipped to Tiamat
Taught Misty Flash and Rock Smash, and then went for a long walk through previous areas to collect items with Cut and Surf

Pokemon encountered when they weren't swarming: Snubbull, Yanma, Dunsparce

Delivered the pokemon with mail, got TM 50: Nightmare
Fought a rematch against Fisher Ralph, his lvl 17 and 19 pokemon were no match for me now
Missed catching Natu (argh!), hit thundershock instead of thunder wave. Derp.
Boxed Viola, as Cut is no longer frequently needed.

There is a moon stone east of New Bark in the cave to Kanto, there's hope for the Great Nidoking of Evil.

Cleared Team Rocket Hideout in Mahogany
Defeated Bryce, used a full restore when Tiamat was frozen solid by Piloswine's Blizzard

After Bryce (6 badges):
Thwomp - Graveler 29
Misty - Togepi 22
Tiamat - Gyarados 29
Ganondorf - Nidorino 30
Dr.Wily - Magneton 31
Rin - Eevee 20

Tiamat defeated Chuck's Dynamic Punch Poliwrath with Dragon Rage and an X-defend!
Marth and Strix are avenged! May they rest in peace.

After Chuck (7 badges):
Thwomp - Graveler 29
Misty - Togepi 27
Tiamat - Gyarados 31
Ganondorf - Nidorino 30
Dr.Wily - Magneton 31
Rin - Eevee 20

Returned (slowly) to Goldenrod to stop the Rocket Radio Takeover
Beat the fake director and got the basement key
Defeated Drystan, Ganondorf double-kicked Sneasel
Misty Evolved! Taught her Fly.
A Weezing self-destructed on Thwomp for 13 damage
Rescued the real director
Defeated the rocket exec in the radio tower. Thwomp had a NDE to Houndoom's Faint Attack.

After Radio Tower (7 badges):
Thwomp - Graveler 36
Misty - Togetic 32
Tiamat - Gyarados 33
Ganondorf - Nidorino 31
Dr.Wily - Magneton 33
Rin - Eevee 20

Rin is hanging around, hoping to become happier by taking many steps.
I think I might have an exciting adventure East of New Bark town to get a moonstone to evolve Ganondorf. Especially since Nidoking can learn Ice Punch.
I'm wondering if I should invest in some Repels and try to catch Lugia at the Whirl Islands. Sounds difficult, I should probably skip that.

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

Ice punch/beam is a standard requirement when it comes tot he elite four imo, though I can't remember the game very well now, I know there are at least a few dragon types ;)
