Thoughts:
Another fun and interesting adventurer! I had never before played a build focused on Sacrifice. I was able to outfit Echinus with 34% life stolen per hit, so as long as an enemy was "leechable," he recovered more life than he spent with each strike. He used the Lightsabre sword from late nightmare difficulty throughout hell. The best feature of that weapon is its very rapid attack speed. For this build, another feature is its moderate physical damage. Even with a Sacrifice synergy adding over 800% damage, the amount life Echinus sacrificed per swing was still managable when fighting against skeletons, insect swarms, and other non-leechables. Successful hits never drained more than about 1/8 of his total health, so I just needed to monitor his red bulb during those fights, and make sure he chugged some potions or redeemed some corpses when necessary. Against physical immunes, Sacrifice with a Lightsabre is fantastic, because no phyiscal damage is inflicted (and thus no sacrifice damage is suffered), but the extra attack rating means blows still land pretty often and deliver enough lightning and magic damage to bring the monster down reasonably quickly.

"Echinus" means "urchin," and his namesake Thorns aura had some effective moments. Reflecting 1,130% damage, there were actually a handful of times in hell when I clearly noticed that a melee enemy had inflicted its own killing blow! As with Dizzard's Iron Maiden curse, it felt to me as if melee monsters usually hurt themselves for somewhere between 20 and 30 percent of their own health, with Echinus and Zanarhi inflicting the rest of the hurt and generally delivering the vast majority of the fatal strikes. Zanarhi fought wiht an Husoldal-Evo polearm and some rare elite spears for most of the game, but he was finally able to use a Tomb Reaver not long after reaching the last waypoint in the Worldstone Keep.

Redemption is one of my favorite auras - corpse disposal and quick healing! But it only heals the paladin, not the mercenary, so there were a few battles for which Echinus used The Redeemer scepter to spray a volley of holy bolts at Zanarhi to help restore his health a little faster. After maxing the Redemption synergy, I considered also maxing the other synergy (Fanaticism), but those 20 points would only have increased Sacrifice's damage by another 100%, which I thought wouldn't be very significant, so instead I put 20 points into the Conviction aura. Conviction helped to reduce enemy defense (increase chances to hit without having to pump dexterity) and also magnify the LightSabre's lightning damage a bit. Leftover points went into Vengeance, but that alternate attack skill was still seldom as effective as Sacrifice, except against various physical immunes in acts 4 and 5. The ancients and Baal were easily bested by Sacrificing with Conviction.

With new 20-point investments in paladin skills Thorns, Redemption, and Conviction, 28/30 paladin skills have been maxed.

I find it especially encouraging to read that sacrifice was manageable, even if the life leech investment is huge. Good thing redemption is the primary synergy...

My sorceress Flamant is over halfway through hell Act 2. She's the last in my eighth sept, and I'm hoping I can complete her journey to matriarch before the end of the year. Blaze is a really odd sorceress skill.

Thoughts:
So much fun! As I mentioned before, I get a perverse satisfaciton from the steady "incremental-damage-over time" mechanics of poison skills and some of the fire skills. The very entertaining Blaze skill sort of forced me to learn a new way to play the game.

Flamant grew to cast Blaze at skill level 30. Upon casting, she ignites a fire on every tile she steps on for the next 18 seconds. Every tile she sets ablaze continues to burn for 33 seconds, roasting its victims for about 2200 fire damage per second. Of course, the challenge is to convince the monsters to wander into the blazes and remain among them long enough to fry. Fortunately, there are plenty of enemies that will just chase the sorceress down. That was the most effective blaze tactic: lure the bad guy into following Flamant, and try to make her run away in a path straight enough that the follower doesn't avoid the flames. This was very different than how I played previous characters, Chiru (meteors), Gurrah (fire walls) or Furud (both), each of whom would rely on a mercenary to pin down a monster in one spot, then put meteors or fire walls upon that stationary enemy.

Unfortunately, lots of chasers chose to target Flamant's barbarian merceneary Sigemund instead of Flamant. Not a problem when he chased after her while she fled. But Sigemnud is very strong willed, and frequently retreats in some other direction, which leads monsters away from the blaze for a time. An alternate tactic was to make Flamant zig-zag as she fled, to spread the blaze over a larger potential area of effect. Going back and forth was a little more tedious, and it took a lot of practice to spread the fire over as much ground area as I could manage.

Blaze's flames stack! This means that, if I could get Flamant to retrace her steps, she could multiply the burn damage of terrain tiles. It was lots of fun to exploit this in doorways and other choke points, by quickly blazing back and forth through a passage five or ten times, in order to combine potential blaze damage up to ten or twenty thousand per second. Then she could go wake up monsters and draw them into doorway-traps that burned them up so very quickly. She successfully employed this trick often in places like act 1's jails and catacombs, act 2's tombs and maggot tunnels, and act 3's temples and durance. I think it would be fun sometime to put Infernostride boots on a character, get its level 8 Blaze proc to trigger, then see whether stacking level-8-Blaze in doorways could ever be a viable monster killer.

Regrettably, there are lots of enemies, especially casters and ranged attackers, with clever behavior that makes them harder to lure into blazes. There are also stationary enemies, like gargoyle traps or lighting spires, that will never wander over a blaze. I was very lucky that Flamant's Leaf runeword had not only the desired +3 Blaze staffmod, but also +3 Meteor. With the rest of her equipment, it let her cast level 10 Meteors, which struck for about a thousand fire damage, and which continued to roast a few more seconds for about 400 fire damage per second. Those meteors gave Flamant a capable backup fire attack.

Against fire-immunes, she switched to using Ondal's staff to cast Blizzards and Ice Bolts. I am happy to report that these skills, partially synergizing each other, were very effective together. Blizzard's damage varied between about 2100 and 2200 cold damage. Each Ice Bolt chilled for about 300 damage, and with the FCR on the staff, Flamant could release four or five bolts between timered Blizzard casts. In hell difficulty, monsters hit by an Ice Bolt would remain chilled for about ten seconds, which helped a lot. If a monster was immune to neither cold nor fire, it was great fun to watch chilled monsters slowly trudge through Blaze fires until dead. (If you someday get to play a sorceress in one of the SPF "random" tournaments, and you get an Ice Bolt skill roll, take heart! Ice Bolt can indeed kill in hell!)

Flamant was my first ever character to frequently run out of stamina in Hell difficulty. With 340 vitality, she had a bit less than 500 stamina. She wore one of the heavier armors, Goldskin, which I selected for its lower strength requirement and its decent bonus to all resistances. Along with her heavy belt, boots, and helmet, she frequently managed to deplete her stamina while running around setting fires. When she was forced to stop running and just walk, I usually had her teleport away to rest up for a few seconds, before re-casting Blaze and getting back into the mix. I even rummaged in my GoMule stashes for stamina charms, and gave her a couple of the good ones I found there, which helped a bit. If you choose to make a hell-viable Blaze sorceress, be wiser than I was, and pay attention to how heavily you dress her up.

The battle with the ancients was interesting. Flamant managed to isolate fire-immune Talic in a corner of the summit. The mercenary Sigemund didn't survive more than two seconds in Talic's whirlwind, so Flamant had to defeat him alone. She did so by dodging him while casting Ice Bolts and Blizzards at him until he expired. The other two ancients both spawned cold-immune. Rather than try to isolate each and take them on one at a time, she initially ran laps around the summit, occasionally dropping a meteor, but mostly just trying to paint the summit in fiery pathways for them to follow. After a few circuits, she did manage to isolate Korlic alone near the summit's entrance from the Ancient's Way. She stayed there, running around the entrance while Korlic walked and bounced around among the flames. When her stamina was gone, I switched her to teleport back and forth to evade Korlic's leap attacks, while she otherwise remained in place to recover her stamina. When recovered, she would again blaze and run around some more. I lost count of how many stamina recovery intervals she needed to defeat Korlic, but I'm certain it was more than five. Madawc was the last to get crispy, but he was cooked way faster than Korlic, probably because he was always on the ground in my flames instead of leaping up and over them.

At the end, I didn't bother to do very much blazing against Baal or his minions. Instead, they were all handled by good old familiar Static Field, Meteor, and Blizzard spells. (I can't prove it, but I'm pretty certain that the killing blow against quest Baal was actually from an Ice Bolt!)

Newly maxed skills Blaze and Ice Bolt bring my maxed sorceress skills tally up to 25/30.

This completes my eighth sept! I'm going to take a break from questing characters for a while. During the holiday break, I'll spend a little time looking for runes or loot with my favorite area runners. I hope to start a ninth sept in early 2025.

For the first time in this project, I finally managed to complete two of the 21 skill trees: necromancer summoning skills and paladin defensive auras.

This is such an epic project -- keep it up! Also, in updating the Mat / Pat thread, I realized that none of these characters were included in the Class sections, which has now been rectified. Next task will be adding the ones from the Cube Grail!

Grinder will max his Hunger skill. Probably a werewolf, but also willing to experiment as a Kodiak bear, just to see how it goes.

As the name implies, this paladin will "hurry up" and max the last two remaining paladin skills, Charge and Might. Conventional chargers attack with high-damage two-handed weapons; however, since I have finally managed to collect the entire Griswold set, I really want to equip those items on this character. I guess I'll see what happens when I try to make him do some one-handed charging.

I think I want to try an Energy Shield / Telekinesis build, with base vitality and pumped-up energy. I already have a good Memory staff waiting for her. I'd prefer to build her as a spell caster, but I'm not sure yet what offensive spells she should cast. Whatever I choose probably won't be synergized very much.

I have many curses yet to be maxed, but I'm not really interested in building a pure "mojomancer" curse caster. Instead, this guy will raise a mob of skeletons, and I'm hoping to max one or two curses to help them fight.
 
Flamant is just ingenious. I made a sorceress long ago that froze monsters in place with ice blast to then set them on fire with firew all, but it never occured to me how blaze and ice bolt fits just as perfectly. Nor that blaze can stack. 😲

All of Christmas and I couldn't truly come up with anything cooler than that to say, honestly.
 
Here's a brief update, while I pause this effort to go wrangle some cows in this year's RFL.
  • Grinder is in hell act 3. He's mostly using Hunger as a backup skill, usually to quickly recover from mana burns. He's using Fury for most of his fighting, despite my protestations that I would never again use that skill. It's starting to grow on me.
  • Hurrier is in hell act 2. Charge is such a different and wild skill! He too has forced me to learn to play this game in a completely new way. (That's the same sentiment I wrote about my recent Blaze sorceress.)
  • Invader is a few waypoints into hell act 1. I'm very much enjoying the amazon's fire skills.
  • Jeweler has begun hell act 1. I'm experimenting with an Energy Shield/Fire Ball build. It has been fun and interesting so far. It's rather tricky to figure out how to manage blood-mana curses in act 5; I haven't really figured that out yet.
  • Knacker is in nightmare act 5. For crowd-control purposes, Grim Wards have been even more useful than I expected.
  • Leveler is in nightmare act 3. Dragon Tail is a sweet finisher skill. She's wearing the complete Orphan's Call wardrobe, and I think it might be a fun challenge to see if I can still make that set work for her when I she gets to hell difficulty.
  • Mobster is in nightmare act 2. He's another skeleton summoner. He advances through quests faster than any of the other six characters.

Thoughts:
After Effete, my Aldur's Watchtower shapeshifter, I had vowed to never use the Fury skill again. I was persuaded by @LouB and other friends here to experiment with the skill once more. I still dislike Fury, for the same reason as before: it doesn't fall back to normal attack after depleting mana!

Whenever a werewolf druid runs out of mana, or gets mana-burned, he can still attack if Feral Rage or Rabies or Fire Claws or Hunger is selected on a button. The attacks become just normal attacks, until the druid can replenish or leech enough mana to attack with the desired skill. But with Fury selected, the druid just remains idle and complains "I need mana!" instead of normal-attack. It doesn't matter whether Fury is on the left or right button. He still just lazily whines in the face of enemies trying to kill him, and makes no effort whatsoever to fight back!

Using the Hunger skill was the saving grace for playing another Fury werewolf. I kept Hunger on the left button and Fury on the right. With each mana burn, I could still fight with the left button. As long as the enemy was "leechable," he quickly regained plenty of mana, and after a bite or two, he could quickly resume right-button fury swipes.

His Rain armor was, well, adequate. It was fun watching twisters occasionally stun monsters, and he had Cyclone Armor active a lot more often than I expected. I tried several two-handed weapons, and eventually settled on Ethereal Edge as Grinder's main weapon. When confronted with monsters immune to physical damage, he switched to pounding them with Nord's, which was awesome with its cold damage, freezing, and extra elemental damage with the Tiamat's shield. These work very well with Hunger, because Hunger's damage penalty only applies to physical damage, not elemental. He had challenging encounters with a couple of bosses that were both physical and cold immune, so I fetched a Baranar's Star and kept it in the stash for stronger fire/lightning damage to handle PI/CIs. But I tried to use Baranar's sparingly, because it gets expensive to repair! These weapons served him very well until he reached the Arreat Summit, but after four failed attempts against the ancients, I exited and retrieved a Reaper's from the GoMule stashes. Its Decrepify curse slowed down the ancients enough to finally get beyond them. Ethereal Edge again carried him well through the Worldstone Keep, but against Lister and Baal, Grinder got the Reaper's back from the stash again.

I remembered the Iron Wolf mercenary with lightning spells had worked really well with my werewolf Effete. I still hadn't yet tried a fire spells act 3 mercenary, and I decided to try one with this character. I expected it might become an exercise in babysitting, because of his tendency to use Inferno more and more as he levels up. The way Iron Wolves cast Inferno only sprays four flames per cast, each doing paltry fire damage during seven animation frames. Grinder certainly would have had an easier time with some other mercenary, but I'm glad I stuck with Scorch through the end. Infernos didn't do much, but his fireballs killed a lot of enemies. Grinder's maxed Raven was great for blinding monsters, so there were several times I could just stop and relax and observe how Scorch dealt with them. It was satisfying to stop and wait to see how long it took him to dispatch blinded foes, and very often he and the ravens could do so within 60 seconds without Grinder's direct help. Scorch was also a good distractor against Superuniques, which almost always preferred to target Scorch, even though his damage was so much lower than Grinder's.

With Grinder's newly maxed Hunger and Raven, 29 of 30 druid skills have now been maxed.

Thoughts:
In many ways, charging was another new way of playing the game. I practiced charging tactics that others have written about here in the forums, such as "chain-charges" and "ping-pongs." Chains are my favorite: move into a position with open space behind a monster, and then hold down the button to charge, continuously knocking back and damaging the enemy until it falls. Ping-pongs are almost as fun: keep charging back and forth between two monsters until both die. But when the battlefield was cramped or crowded, which was often, it was more effective to charge into a pack, then switch to Vengeance and pound away, retreating as necessary to heal up before charging back in. Redemption was my favorite way to heal, and Holy Shield was helpful to avoid getting hurt while occupied with Vengeance.

Charge and Might were the last two skills to complete, so now all 30 of 30 paladin skills have been maxed.

Thoughts:
Enjoyable playthrough. She only needed to re-cast her level 7 Valkyrie a few times, because the level 15 Valkyries spawned by the Peace runeword usually outlasted her enemies, including the scary frenzied minotaurs, urdars, or thorn-hulks. The mercenary got killed a lot more often, but his rare spear's chance to cast Amplify Damage helped a lot, so it was worth the effort to pick up and sell armors and stuff to maintain a mercenary resurrection fund.

Anything not fire immune melted quickly under fully synergized Immolation Arrows. That skill has a short delay, so her attack pattern was to alternate between one mana-free Magic Arrow (left mouse button) and one Immolation Arrow (right button) during each engagement. Against fire immunes she just used Magic Arrows and Decoys. Most battles were fought using Lycander's Aim, but the Melody bow's knockback was useful a couple of times to push an enemy against a wall.

Newly maxed Fire Arrow, Exploding Arrow, and Immolation Arrow bring the amazon maxed skill tally to 25/30. I'm pretty sure I can finish the remaining amazon skills with just two more characters.
