OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

thats how it reads to me.

just popped into whatever the ghost town is called. can't do the old turn the contrast trick right up to avoid using flash in the caves trick on a pc. pity.

venosaur is lvl 43
mr mime lvl 21
nidorino lvl 17

are the 3 i'm using atm. have a drowsee for flash and a bellsprout for cut. i need to luck out and get a bird for flight.
I think i'm going to lvl nidorino and use him as my main. venosaur isn't doing much for me.

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

You can buy Magikarp before Mt. Moon if it's the first encounter: You didn't wander into the grasses along the Route beforehand (route 3.) Just so you know, I am just saying how I interpret the rules, and they don't actually mention trading/buying from NPC's as far as I'm aware. I think the main intention is to limit how many you can catch, as well as reduce the amount of mainstream/power types you use.
However, in the next town (Vermilion) you get the Old Rod, and can fish within one of the towns to catch one anyway. But if you talk to an NPC, and he offers a trade, that counts as a random encounter for that area. Vermilion has someone who offers a trade for a Farfetch'd for your Spearow.

@FoE/Skjolde - It is considered an optional rule, so FoE may just drop that one. That's all fine. I'm just clarifying, and don't want to...* impose anything anyway. This is the first runthrough with Nuzlocke rules for all of us, and I hope that they're clear enough.

*... Skjolde - your quote is very distracting.

Part 3 - Oh the Pain!
Mount Moon and the Cerulean Gym went really well, along with the Rival Battle. What you'd expect with a well-levelled Ivysaur and Nidoqueen (evolved with a Moon Stone from Mt. Moon. But...

A little overconfidence, met with a painful combination of sleep and supereffectiveness put Khloris and newly captured Oya in a world of pain.
Aikami got the same treatment - Hypnosis followed by a Confusion attack - but I switched to Oya as a sacrifice. On switching back, Aikami woke up, and managed to scrape a win with 7 health remaining!

I went to catch an Abra, but without the Sleep Powder(?) of Butterfree, I was relying on luck. Abra escaped my Pokeball, and promptly used Teleport.
I did manage to catch a Bellsprout (not nicknamed, so probably won't use it,) and Geodude along the way, but don't intend to use it either.

For now, it's all up to Aikami! I'm really not too good at this...

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

Tough luck Drystan! I lost my Pidgey due to being reckless. So I'm about to enter with a Butterfree, Ivysaur and a Magikarp.

EDIT: What's so disturbing about it? :)

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

Train Butterfree until it learns Sleep Powder. It shouldn't be too long. Then it will probably be easier to catch Abra. That's what I'd do anyway, but I couldn't even catch a Metapod! :(

I was typing that message, looked at your quote, and lost track of my thoughts. Not disturbing, but distracting.

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

Part 4 - It just gets better

Route 6 to Vermilion City netted me another shot at a Pidgey (Oya Reborn), but this time, it was a successful capture. Some dude in Vermilion City gave me an Old Rod, where I promptly went fishing. Oya Reborn almost 1 hit-KO'd my chance at a Magikarp (Poseidon,) but I could just fish in another town anyway...
After that, proceeded east and did a little levelling, came across a Drowsee (Morpheus - God of Dreams), and then into Diglett Cave to catch... A Diglett! Managed that without a problem, before getting confronted by a level 29 Dugtrio! What the hell!?! This isn't going to go down well...

Go Aikami! Body slam!
Dugtrio used Dig.
*... Oh crap! Run!*
Can't Escape.
Dugtrio used Dig.
It's Super Effective.
Aikami has fainted.

I probably should've swapped to Oya Reborn as a flying type, but thought I could escape. Oya Reborn being level 13 couldn't escape anyway, and would be KO'd pretty easily. After Aikami fainted, I threw in Morpheus (God of Dreams/Drowsee,) who prompted fainted before being able to use Hypnosis or Run.

Here's a tip! You get the TM Whirlwind somewhere earlier. Teach it to Pidgey or Spearow. And if a Dugtrio appears and uses Dig, and you can't run... Swap to Flying and use it! I was not expecting a Dugtrio to appear with a higher level than my Aikami.

After a near fainting of Gaia vs Spearow, we went to SS Anne to level up Gaia versing other types. Gaia didn't last long, getting promptly got knocked out by a lower level Machop, when his Dig missed the second time.

I'm really not good at this. My top Gods, Goddesses and Spirits keep getting knocked out!

I did some power/speed levelling (feels like abuse of emulators IMO, but as this isn't competitive, I'm somewhat okay with it) on my Spirit of the Winds and got him to do well against Dugtrios. This is a good place to train, if you've got flying types who can take a few Dugtrio attacks, and increase the speed to avoid mind-numbing running. We've all had some experience at that with D2...

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

I totally forgot about that rule!

I don't feel like doing a restart, but will release the second pidgey right away :)

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

I released the pidgey and started grinding before entering mt moon. Everything was good until I met the rocket guy with the raticate. Ouch. First my freshly caught zubat got knocked out, thereafter I had to say goodbye to my lovely starter, and in the end my butterfree bit the dust before my nidoran finally got the job done. I was then down to just magikarp and nidoran.

I grinded my nidoran and used the moon stone, so I now have a nidoqueen. She's beautiful and her name is Jeffrey. The next cathcable monster I met was a rattata. sigh. He's called James and I grinded him to lvl 20 where he becomes raticate. Hyperfang is decent, but it really is a sucky pokemon. I then proceeded to catch a Bellsprout, Jeremy, which I am quite exited about. It was very easy to grind till lvl 21 where it evolves. Also I needed a grass pokemon after letting my bulbasaur go. Also, sleep powder. Yeah.

So after beating my rival, Skjolde, I won the next badge. Jeremy took care of the water pokemons and it was easy peasy. My team know consists of:

Jimmy, lvl 13 magikarp
Jeremy, lvl 23 weepinbell
Jeffrey, lvl 23 nidoqueen
James, lvl 20 raticate

Will start grinding Jimmy in the next area, but he needs tons of xp and.. yeah.. is a magikarp.

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

but then he becomes a murderous death dragon and is winning incarnate

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

So, I couldn't even make it out of mt. moon..

My butter free died, due to my own stupidity. Which was a shame, it owned absolutely everything with its confusion. Then all I got left was a Ivysaur and a under leveled Geodude. I lost against some trainers Zubat. And did I mention that I ran out of potions? Arg.. This puts me in a bad mood.

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

You need to do a restart. We want you here!
Also, not that bad. Think of it this way - if you're really really lucky this time you'll maybe catch a pikachu in the forrest!

magikarp is lvl 19. come on already. He's leveling at the same pace as my nidoqueen who is at a much higher lvl.

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

Ok. So I restarted. Starter Pokemon is Squirtle, Rival is named Frede, Let's do this!

Initially, I was discussing this with Skjolde. I named my rival that too.
Can Bellsprout learn Sleep powder? Either Butterfree or Bellsprout would be good for catching that Abra then. And what Pikachu in the forest? It's been so long, I can't remember these.

Jeffrey the Nidoqueen. XD

AI pokemon with Confuse Ray are so annoying. There's really not much you can do, apart from hope you don't hurt yourself. Sorry to hear about the blacking out, Skj, and best of luck with Squirtle.

Until you throw him with half health and poisoned against a Raichu. XD

Edit: Going to change the rules somewhat, if there's agreeance. It doesn't seem right as is to me anymore, and some here probably thought that too. Being offered a trade - wild encounter? Accepting an offered trade, or receiving/buying a Pokemon counts as the encounter from an area. But just talking to someone and being offered one shouldn't. Especially when this is very close to a blind run for most of us. Thoughts?

Yes, Bellsprout learns Sleep powder. Along with stun spore and poison powder all before lvl 20. Also it already knows vine whip and will learn acid and razor leaf (teh awesome) later. It doesn't need much xp to lvl and have rather good offensive stats (sucky defense though). I'm very satisfied with it so far and hoping that I will keep it alive until it's final evolution.

And yes, Pikachu can be found in the viridian forrest. But it's rare. I did encounter a couple.

Until you throw him with half health and poisoned against a Raichu. XD

Why would you ever do that xD?

Sounds good to me.

Moved on and kicked Lt. Surge's butt. Caught my self a diglett and a sandshrew. Diglett is quite awesome but I see no room for the sandslash. I'm at work, so going of memory here but here's my current team:

Jimmy, lvl 19 magikarp
Jeremy, lvl 26 weepinbell
Jeffrey, lvl 26 nidoqueen
James, lvl 23 raticate
Jonah, lvl 12 sandshrew
J-idontrememberthename, lvl 20 diglett

When Magikarp evolves and learns Bubblebeam that will take care of the water element. Jeffrey is the king of normal type with mega punch and body slam, while Jeremy pwns rock/water types with poison and grass attacks. Since I recon the odds for finding an electric pokemon any time soon aren't good I was cheesy enough to teach James the Raticate Thunderbolt. Diglett will be my rock/ground type for now. That preatty much just leaves fire, which will be tough. I'm really hoping I'll find a growlithe or vulpix (whichever spawns in blue) outside cerulean city. Also, when time comes and I'm still alive, I'll of course get my self a Gastly.

Edit: short info about the battle against surge.. Nidoqueen/diglett both immune to electric attacks. Dig/dig/dig/dig. Mega punch/mega punch/mega punch.

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

vulpix is blue. and i believe unlike growlithe lacks growl. therefore easier to catch.

will try to get some more time on tonight.
there is a chance of voltorb and magnemite outside dark cave. besides that i think it's luck in the safari zone, eevee in (big shop city with the grass gym) or surfing to the electric power plant.

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

vulpix is blue. and i believe unlike growlithe lacks roar. therefore easier to catch.
.

ftfy

I actually remember having a sick ninetales once. Would love to relive that. And it's cute too.

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

thats what i meant.

pffft arcanine > ninetales. everytime.

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

I usually only used one of them until I could get moltres. Then it didn't matter. I can't decide which I wanna spent my master ball on. Probably depends on the pokemons I have left. Mewtwo is of course also allways a possibility, but a high level Haunter/Gengar can be pretty decent for a psychic pokemon.

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

mewtwo is a waste unless you are going for all pokemon as you have already completed the game.

i also always tried to avoid the legendary mons. i prefer evolutionable ones.
