They can be shopped too.
Well, that's good to know. Kinda sucks, though. I was hoping I had something super rare there, but oh well... :(. I guess a Grand Matron Bow can't be shopped, though, and can only be obtained through Anya? And probably only in hell. So my best bet at one of those is to rush a full set of Amazons to hell, rescue Anya and hope for the best? Will the level of the Zons be relevant in any way? I noticed that the item level of that Hydra Bow matches the level of my Amazon, so I assume level does matter.

So, about 2 months ago I asked whether a cold sorc or LF Amazon would be the best character to get to level 99 in cows in p8 games. Went with the suggested Amazon and gathered her gear, did all her quests and got her to level 69 now. Gear is as follows:

Guillaume's Face (+15% IAS jewel)
Rattlecage
Mavina's Tenet
Goblin Toe
Chromatic Tower Shield of Equilibrium (83@ res, 17% FHR)
Crafted Vampirebone Gloves (20% IAS, 15% CB, 2%% LL)
Crafted Matriarchal Javelins (332% ED; 6% LL, +2 Javelin Skills)
Saracen's Chance
Raven Frost
+29 MPK ring
Crafted Matriarchal Bow (292% ED, 3% LL, +2 Bow Skills) on switch

I took snooker's Ania as inspiration for this. Skills are currently the same. Maxed LF, Critical Strike and Pierce, 10 points in Multiple Shot, 1 in A/E/D. 2 points unspent with 30 more to come until level 99.

Rattlecage still needs an IAS jewel and the bow needs ShaeEthNef. Would be nice to get a source of Knockback for the Javelins. Maybe I'll get lucky on another craft. Also would like to have a source of cold damage. Raven Frost has some, but I didn't notice any enemies getting chilled by it.

Now, of course, I've just read that %ED is irrelevant with LF. Well, I've actually read it before, but forgot all about it since it wasn't relevant for me yet at the time. Guess I burned through a bunch of runes and jewels for nothing. Repair costs for those javelins are outrageous, too. I have my doubts I could keep them going for more than a few runs until I run out of gold, unless I pick up a bunch of stuff just to sell it. So, I might try to just use some cheaper Javelins or mostly use the bow instead. nermind got his 1.07 Bowazon to 99, so that also seems to be an option. Both gear- and skillwise, there doesn't seem to be much of a difference between the two. With the remaining skill points I could max Multiple Shot, probably put a point into Guided Arrow for the leftover cows and then probably put the rest into A/E/D?

Oh and speaking of bows: Unlike in newer versions, Matriarchal Bows have a speed of 0 instead of -10, is that correct? What would the best bow base be for a Bowazon?

Good catch (ilvl=clvl), but the ilvl of the weapon is not used in crafting; it's the ilvl of the rune. So if you intend to use the GMB for crafting, clvl is irrelevant.

Correct, though I don't have an answer to your second question. :P To get breakpoint tables you should be able to use an existing calculator, but in stead of selecting a Matriarchal Bow you can just select another bow that has a speed of 0.

Some quick stats:
Code:
Grand Matron Bow:
14-70
134 str, 161 dex
speed 10

Matriarchal Bow:
18-58
107 str, 187 dex
speed 0

That I am aware of. Crafting would be done by a high level character. Well, doesn't need to be that high if the crafting rune is still all new and shiny ;). My question was in regard to whether or not character level is relevant to the quality of the item that Anya will give them. Could she give a GMB to a level 1 character? Otherwise I'd have to do Ancients quest and some leveling with them, which I don't think is really worth it, considering the GMB isn't that much better than a Matriarchal Bow in my opinion. Weapon Speed Calculator suggests that the MB is usually 1 Frame faster than the GMB.

@LongingForDeath
Ah, of course that's what you meant. :D But nope, that does not matter; regardless of clvl you can receive any item she has to offer, which according to my oldy notes are:
Code:
 [58] Spider Bow
 [60] Blade Bow
 [61] Shadow Bow
 [64] Great Bow
 [67] Diamond Bow
 [70] Crusader Bow
 [72] Ward Bow
 [74] Hydra Bow
 [61] Pellet Bow
 [65] Gorgon Crossbow
 [70] Colossus Crossbow
 [76] Demon Crossbow
 [64] Matriarchal Bow
 [67] Grand Matron Bow
 [64] Matriarchal Spear
 [67] Matriarchal Pike
 [67] Matriarchal Javelin

(Number is just the qlvl of the item.)

Not sure if this is already known, but I noticed something odd today. I'm currently doing p8 cow runs. To fill up the game, I join with three level 1 mules that I HF-rushed before my hiatus over 7 years ago. Since I also wanted to socket some items via Larzuk, I wanted to check whether these mules still had their Larzuk reward available or even had that quest done in the first place. When I wanted to create a game with one of the mules, I noticed that I could only create games in normal and nightmare difficulty. Not hell difficulty. They are also still titled "Slayer". When creating a NM game with them, I can see that they have only made it to act 4 NM. Yet, they can still join hell games without any issues.

I don't think so. From what I remember, I only rushed them to NM act 4, since I was only missing Ist + Mal rune for my beta Call To Arms. I had no character in the betas that could actually collect their HFs there, and HFs drop the same in NM and Hell in 1.07/1.09 as far as I know. So I saved myself the trouble of getting them to hell. NM was much easier.

But even if the rusher died, rejoined and forgot to party up, that would only explain why they are in act 4 NM. Not why they can join hell games. I've just tried to join a hell game with a level 1 mule that hasn't done any quests at all yet, and for that one I get the message that the character needs to kill Baal in NM difficulty to join a hell game.

Since 1.07 was the first patch that introduced LoD, it might have something to do with how classic characters are converted to the expansion. If I remember correctly, classic characters have to complete a certain number of acts to be hell capable when they are converted. What if the same calculation applies here? My mules were expansion characters from the very start, since I don't play classic. In act 4 NM, they have completed 8 acts. A classic character that completed 8 acts would be in hell. Although I'm pretty sure classic characters need to complete 10 acts to be in hell after they are converted to expansion. So that still wouldn't add up.

Since this is the most active time travelling thread I thought I might just ask this here:

The Trenshadow version switcher seems to not work in 1.14 due to a lack of .dll's (Blizzard removed them? o_O) and there is no approved version of the Bliss version switcher available in the Link sticky. I guess installing a second version of Diablo into a different folder and downgrading it is a third solution but it doesn't scale well with more patches. (I count at least 8 relevant paches that people actually play...)

So, what's the most future proof way of playing multiple patches and what do people use right now?

Trenshadow. Just copy the .dlls from an earlier version into your 1.14 folder. That way Trenshadow can still copy them into the main directory when you want to play 1.14, but D2 won't use them.

I copied the .dlls from the 1.07 download of the Trenshadow version switcher into the main directory and followed the remaining steps but the game doesn't start at all when I use the 1.07 launcher. It does however create a 'Save' folder inside my 1.07 directory, so it has done something.

Ah, I take it you just made a subfolder for 1.07, but not for 1.14, which you left in your main directory? I always make a subfolder for each version, including 1.14. So I have the .dlls in both the main directory and the 1.14 subfolder. Then you'll need a proper shortcut to start your 1.14 version, just the way you would with 1.07.

My folder structure looks something like this:
Code:
Diablo 2
|-1.07
  |-data
  |-save
    |-Stashes
|-1.09d
  |-data
  |-save
    |-Stashes
|-1.10s
  |-data
  |-save
    |-Stashes
|-1.14d
  |-data
  |-save
    |-Stashes
|-data
|-support

And my shortcuts have the following settings. Replace 1.07 with whichever version you want to play:
Code:
Target: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Diablo II\1.07\LaunchModGame.vbs" -noprompt -direct -txt -3dfx
Start In: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Diablo II\1.07"

Hmmm, something is completely wrong on my end. I created a 1.14d folder an copied the .dlls from the main folder into it as well as a copy of the two vbs files from the 1.08 folder and the game.exe from the main folder.

I created a link like you described and 1.14d launches with the new link but crashes when I click on SP. My old 1.14d link that the game created still works fine though.

I'm not clear on why adding a 1.14d folder would fix the 1.07 folder, what exactly does the 'LaunchModGame.vbs' do, and is it version specific?

I installed from CD. From what I've heard, if you install from Battle.net, you're out of luck if you want to play anything pre-1.12, because it simply won't work. At least @Smittyphi had issues with that a little while ago and couldn't get it to work.

And yes, the missing .dll files are Trenshadow's issue with the current patch. From what I remember, LaunchModGame.vbs creates a backup of the .dll files, then copies the ones from the version folder into the main directory, then starts the game. Might be the other way around, though. Once you exit, the copied files get deleted and the backups are restored. With 1.14 not having these .dll files anymore, Trenshadow usually crashes at startup or gives you an error message, because those files are missing.

I'm using an older version of BVS before Bliss started randomly changing lots of things. It was easy to set up and I never could get trenshadow stuff to run properly.
