Small question: the number under the 'boss' column in the tables, is that boss packs only, or also champ packs?

Both, but champion packs count as one "boss", doesn't matter if it's 1 or 4 of them. It all evens out in the end.

I'll reply to your question from the MFO thread here. 33s/runs are good, but still far from the top. It might seem close, but improving just one second from here is really hard.

I'm planning on writing a detailed guide on running AT, which would include looking for a map, but for now, here a video from the last year's MFO: 5 AT runs These were slower than my current runs, but spawn density was better. Or I just got lucky, don't remember since I rerolled that map a long time ago. Anyway, you should quickly notice if there's something obvious that I'm doing and you are not.

To summarise the most important factors are:
1) the map itself - including the distance from town, layout, density
2) pick up less stuff (during MFO, I only grab qualifiers, grailers, small and grand charms, high runes)
3) blizzard aim and general decision making, these slowly get better as you do more runs

There are many more details to this puzzle, which I hope to address with the guide.

Edit: run #1 in the video is a bit sloppy, I always get nervous when recording my play :D, but they pick up after that. I should also mention that this was before I switched to keyboard skill bindings and was using some combination of F1 (for TK) and the mouse wheel.

@Albatross Congrats on the Cerebus' Bite ... back then ;).

Watching the video, it's definitely the map which is the biggest difference I think. My map is much bigger, much more spread out also. Seeing it made me thinkg of the AT map I rolled with my first HC Blizz Sorc here, which also mainly consisted of a small, circular route to follow. I forgot about that, but yeah, it was much, much smaller.

I have played a lot of Blizz Sorcs over the year, including loads of AT runs. So I should be comfortable with aiming. Having said that, from the video I have the impression you are still killing boss packs faster than me overall, so there might still be something to learn for me :).

Picking up stuff ... I pick up exactly what you mention there during tournaments like MFO. That and yellow Circlet types and rings.

Edit: I also need Full Rejuvs on a regular base, so picking up new ones slightly slows me down too, although not that much obviously.

Btw, for some reason I always thought it was better to skip champs and only go for bosses during AT and Pit runs. Not so much for Blizz Sorc, since she has area damage and as such kills 4 champs in the time it takes to kill 1. But certainly for PitBarbs, who have to kill champs one at a time. Most of the times I still kill them, certainly with the Sorc, but that's mainly because it's a habit from the past I have a hard time getting rid off.

Btw, by saying 33s/run makes you a top runner, I meant that if anyone in the MFO would do AT Blizz Sorc, you would be among the fastest. From this thread it's clear to me that there are people as fast or even faster than you, but that's really SPF all time fastest runners we are talking about, I think. Not that it matters much anyway obviously :).

Edit: would you mind posting your gear? I'm currently using a HotO / 3 Trang's / 10% fcr ring setup, but see a mention of DF several times. That could explain your faster killing, although I would have to see where to make up for the loss of resists.

There's always a better map.. always :)

Here's my current one. Just 4 runs (no spoilers), picked out of several short clips I've recorded tonight. Compared to the old one, this video features me playing with new key bindings and a map:
  • with easier Act I WP access
  • of which nearly half can be ignored and still average 5,65 boss/run
I might be killing them slightly faster because I tend to go high on damage, but it's also important how you use the time during blizzard cooldowns. If there's another boss in sight, I'll try to kill it with IB. If there's nothing I'll check an adjacent room, kill the boss if it's there and TP back to check what the first one dropped or to finish it off if it's still kicking around.

It's probably inefficient to skip them (just like CIs if merc can handle them well), especially in short runs where the save, load, and travel makes up like 1/4 of the total run time.

This is what I've settled with for now:
  • Harlequin crest with ptopaz
  • Death's fathom (25%) with an ist rune
  • 3 part tal's (amulet, armor, and belt)
  • spirit
  • trang oul's claws
  • war traveler (47)
  • fortuitous ring of fortune (33%, take that nagel :p)
  • 10 FCR / 20 STR / 26 mana / 5% MF rare
  • Gheed's
  • 1 chilling skiller
  • 1 small charm with 5% FHR (60 with spirit), rest are 6-7% MF, some with resists
Switch:
  • A +5 BO CtA
  • spirit
Merc:
  • eth CV insight (6 CS) (still waiting for a better base)
  • Andariel's socketed with a cham
  • eth AP fortitude
105 FCR, 507 MF, resists are 5 / 49 / 93 / -12 (you don't need fire or poison resists down there)
~6k blizzard, ~3k IB

Replacing the oculus with DF (when it finally dropped) felt fantastic, I even considered using HotO too, just because of that random teleport nonsense.

Rings and charms can obviously be improved, I should probably focus on that after the MFO.

Edit: I also have to pick up some rejuvs every few runs, but try to do it in bulk and during blizzard timers to avoid wasting too much time.

Edit 2: wait, you are playing HC with this one too? I'm afraid that following my advice will only get your char killed :D

No, no, SC on this one :).

I'm probably just missing something here, but how do you get to 105% fcr with this setup? I count 85% (DF 20, Spirit 35, Trang's 3pc 20, fcr ring 10). That's exactly the reason why I'm using HotO. No wait, now I realize, the other 20% is from gloves, which you didn't mention, but I assume are Trang's.

Hmm, I'll have to try it out next time. Compared to my setup, I'd have to ditch my 39% Chance Guards for Trang's gloves and the HotO for Isted DF, which would mean a loss of 14% mf, bringing me just below 500%. Still a lot I reckon. I'm a bit concerned about the loss of 40% PR though, bringing me to around zero PR. I often seem to get poisoned in AT actually. I'll have to see how it goes.

Couple of thoughts on the runs:
  • This was my second 50 run session on this map, so pretty sure it can be improved. But I don't think I can beat the #2 entry with my map, so why even bother. :) Unless someone else moves slightly past me, in which case I'll try again. ;)
  • 8.32 bosses seems above average for my map, though not sure yet by how much. The other 50 run session I recorded came in at 7.95 bosses, so initially the average seems to be somewhere around ~8.1. Still a small sample size though.
  • An ugly Fana/Amp spawn around run 20 was annoying, that run caused me to burn through a lot of purples which slowed me down for the next couple of runs, having to manage potions more.
  • Not 100% sure about my teleport route, in particular whether it's worth it to check the top right spot which I often do. Could be more efficient to skip that, but so far I think it's worth checking (even though in this set it didn't spawn many bosses).
  • To get a better score technically I could skip some Devilkins or Archers Champions here and there. Not sure how much of a difference it would make in actual MF efficiency (for better or worse). At least for those numerous MFO runs I prefer not skipping them to avoid additional decision-making.

I'll rerun my AT map when I'm done with work, see if I can get a 32s batch. Afterwards, it's getting re-rolled because the density just isn't there. I don't have concrete numbers, but my last years MFO map might have been better, even though I averaged 35.5s compared to sub 33s on the new one.

Done. There are quite a few tables, which is why I think it hasn't been updated with every entry. But I guess the risk of table spamming is low, there aren't as many updates here as in tourney threads.

I also applied the same formatting as used in the 99er thread, i.e. font is shown as monospaced Courier already in the editing window when using the rich text editing mode (which should be used to update the tables).
 
I've done further testing on my Pit map: I wrote down the number of boss packs per run over (consecutive) 1200 runs. I thought it might be interesting to share some numbers*. I've also recorded 25 runs so I could ask your help to identify what I'm doing wrong, as running times are not great.

The map has several potential shortcuts, but unfortunately, spawn frequencies/locations preclude them. For these runs I picked the route that seemed best: based on a sample of 250 runs, this route should yield 0.132 less packs per run compared to the full map.

Run times

I haven't done extensive time testing yet, but preliminary results are discouraging. In one set of 50 runs on the restricted map I killed 443 bosses in 3260s (~7.36 s/boss). I'm not sure how to improve this. I am already running a high dmg, low MF build, with 95% chance to hit all targets. The only thing build-wise that comes to mind is decreasing the need for picking up potions. I plan to test using War Cry instead of Howl, but I think that is going to be even harder to play.

So, I recorded 25 runs (8.48 bosses, 65s per run) to ask your opinion on my playing skill. (It takes me a couple of runs to warm up and my PC is struggling.)


What can I improve? Thanks!

(*) Counting was done while playing, so there's bound to be some mistakes. I don't think these are common or significant enough, though.

Notes

- Nice improvement over my previously reported result. It has been a long road to get here, though.
- Smooth switching and quick aiming are really important: if you do these (and teleporting) right, you can often avoid getting chilled, hit, etc. I think this was the biggest improvement I've made since only yesterday.
- It took me 10-15 runs to really get going, so this can be obviously improved. Also, I can wait to get a set with 440+ packs (has happened before).
- My MF values need work. This can come from finally being able to switch to a Cham setup, but long term also from better charms (currently using two AR/FRW GCs). I do like this high damage build though, so we'll see.
- I might also boost my HP a bit, maybe try to get to lvl 96 while looking for Fathom/Web.
- I've noticed S&E lag on short runs (<56s), which are common on my map. That and general PC sluggishness I hope to do something about in a couple of months.
- Recording and then counting would also help, but this will have to wait for PC improvements as well.
- I'm actually not sure if the restricted map is fast enough compensate for lower boss numbers. Needs testing.
- Working on improving efficiency is a great way to make thousands of runs interesting!

@Owlie watched some of your runs. Can't see any obvious mistakes, but I never played zerkers so I'm probably not too helpful. You seem to understand the game mechanics really well, I liked how you TPed close to one pack, howled and walked to the other to let the merc kill the first one. Stuff like this adds up and increases efficiency.

I'm glad you managed to improve just by playing more. Practice does go a long way. Other than that, the answer to your question would almost always be "the map" :p The density on yours looks really good though and you got the numbers to back it up now. I do find teleporting to the south the worst because the HUD is obscuring a part of the screen and you can't use the range extension trick to full effect.

Had an issue with OBS studio crashing the game some 30ish minutes into the session so I've ignored that run and deduced the time it took to restart the game and start the next run.

A pretty big time improvement, but the average boss number took a hit. The sorc and merc gained a level since last time. I put one point into warmth to help with mana burn recovery. This saves time because less potions are used, but the biggest difference was cutting runs short after encountering 2 3-4 champ packs with 1-2 bosses or 7+ bosses in the first segment of the map. This lowered the run time, but apparently hurt the boss count as well.

I'm fairly convinced I could go below 30s with this strategy as there were a few bigger mistakes which ate time. Overall better decision making and more consistent blizzard aim should shave another second at least, but there's no point really. The map is getting re-rolled until something with better density is found.

@Owlie watched some of your runs. Can't see any obvious mistakes, but I never played zerkers so I'm probably not too helpful. You seem to understand the game mechanics really well, I liked how you TPed close to one pack, howled and walked to the other to let the merc kill the first one. Stuff like this adds up and increases efficiency.

I'm glad you managed to improve just by playing more. Practice does go a long way. Other than that, the answer to your question would almost always be "the map" :p The density on yours looks really good though and you got the numbers to back it up now. I do find teleporting to the south the worst because the HUD is obscuring a part of the screen and you can't use the range extension trick to full effect.

Thanks for watching and commenting! Recording and reviewing helped more than just the sheer number of runs. And yes, I am hesitant to blame it on the map without further testing.

Big congratulations on your latest result! That is very impressive in my book. If you rolled a 6+ map, that would be quite something. I am really looking forward to your guide.

Your map and gear may not be on the same level, but those boss numbers pretty much right there.

Are you sure you got the numbers right though? I was intrigued by the numbers and watched the first 5-6 runs of your vid above, and a couple of times I counted a lower number than the one you noted in the Excel sheet after the runs. Don't get me wrong I don't mean to imply any sugarcoating on your part (difference was just 1 in those cases). Just saying counting while running can lead to miscounting sometimes. While it takes more time, I guess it's just more precise to count by going through the vid after a session. Might as well though is what I think, since you're recording anyway (for analyzing to improve, posting results or whatever reason).

Fantastic map in any case, grats! Certainly seems better than mine, slightly larger area to cover, but that's more than made up for by the density. And I don't want to know how many maps I rolled until I found that mine. ;) As far as gameplay goes I think you know what to do, and same as for me, I think improvements are just going to be down to more practice and slowly chopping away a split-second here and there. Unfortunately I don't have much time either currently. :rolleyes: Also I've been meaning to post some results in other categories for a while now, so instead of more Pit runs I think that's going to be next.. whenever. :) Anyway, nice performance IMO!
 
First off, thank you for bringing this to my attention, @ffs!

I hope I don't need to get defensive and point out why it would be absurd of me to try to fabricate these results in this way. Honestly, I should be embarrassed for even reporting a berserker score lower than a singer (it's Gripphon's singer, but still). Experience has taught me not to consider myself a speedy player, so my ultimate hope really is not that I will break records. As I've said, working on my efficiency is an incomparably better motivator/goal for me than, say, thinking, "I need to do 8k runs to have a shot at Death's Web."

In addition to being a little embarrassed, I am now worried this a systemic issue, invalidating the 1200+ documented runs I've done. I will recount the packs in the video as soon as I find the time. I would bet that the culprit is the unwitting and unconscious counting of individual champion kills. In any case, I would ask @Albatross to remove my score from the table in his post.

I absolutely agree that recording and reviewing is the preferable method of counting. However, with my PC struggling with both recording and playing, and having counted for probably around 2000 runs between this map, the old map, and the frustratingly many rerolls in between, I felt this method would be alright. Even if it does slow down the runs for the little bit it takes to record the number, and is more mentally taxing. I would hesitate to report a significantly better score without video, though.

As far as the best documented Pit map, here's Gripphon's post.
3 best Pit maps in SPF history:

1. Fabians Pit 12+ bosspack map
2. Fabians ex Pit map he rerolled to get 12+ bosspack map
3. Fabians ex zerkers Pit map with only ~ 10 average bosspacks

I don't know what to say about that 12+ map?! I don't even know why he would reroll it, because it seems to me it could have the worst layout imaginable and still be crazy efficient. As an example, (if we assume my counting to be correct) one of the 10 boss runs in my reported set averaged 5.68 s/bosspack (w/o hork), and an 11 one 5.96 s/bosspack.

I don't know what Fabian's record map looks like. I can definitely see how my map can be improved. However, having already spent so much time rolling for this one (and it's comforting to hear you struggled as well), I don't see myself rerolling it. I might try looking for a better map with another character though, but probably not soon as I would probably try to get to at least lvl 96-97 before going to the Pit.

I hope you do post these results, as well as work on your Pit runs. Other forumites as well (@NanoMist with his new 6Ist PB?)! I hope we can use a bit of healthy competition and mutual cheering on to push ourselves further.

Grip's comment about the 12 bosspack map is an old inside joke from 2012 or so, when I semi-jokingly coined "The Fabian Theorem", which stated that every single time anyone made a claim about number of boss packs, ever, it was an (inadvertent) exaggeration. This was before Grip and I started the trend of actually counting boss packs and keeping track of long-term averages, in those days everyone just went by feel. The 12 specifically comes from kestegs claiming his Pit map "probably had about 10-12 average boss packs" (I forget the exact phrasing, but close to that), which turned into a bit of a meme in our IRC channel. The other two maps he mentioned were my previous maps, which were both very good, but of course the post is still semi-joking and semi-trolling. At no point did anyone have a 10+ or 12+ map.

Anyway, my record map is the one I still have, and my record is one of only two attempts with it, in the first few days after me rolling it. After I got the 1.435 score on my second attempt, I never did any more runs. Like ffs said, it has 8.51 boss packs after 275 runs in my old excel spreadsheet, although I've counted in some other instances not recorded in that spreadsheet, too. It's a very very good map, but I have a feeling it might only be the second best ever now, if Owlie's map stands the test of time. I don't remember if I commented in-thread or not when I first read about it, but it seems very good to me. Rerolling for a better one seems crazy to me, but I suppose it's possible they're out there (and I admit I haven't watched more than the first few runs of the video, so maybe I'm exaggerating how good the map is). Either way, it's clearly very very good, and I know all too well what a time commitment it is to find anything even close to as good. Hoping to see your results get better as you get more used to the map! It's a lot of fun watching and reading about you and ffs bringing back crazy Pitbarb efficiency after Grip and I retired, I wish you both the best :)

Agreed, great work so far. After all the running in the MFO, I'm taking a break from Pit Barb before searching for a new map. I may try out the other categories in the mean time..
 
Pretty great efficiency from both. I’ve just finally got my Pit Barb to a playable point and I can say it’s like watching a baby gazelle trying to walk from watching my recordings. Map density is ok but the route is a bit long and I’m far too slow. Hoping to improve and I’ll share some results when I get a presentable set as well as some LK and Pindle sets. On the note of LK, that 17.880 seconds with gems is pretty ridiculous! Is that counting time spent alt tabbing to gomule to empty finds? @Gripphon
