So after doing some NM countess runs to get a Sol rune, I removed MF gear to up the chances of finding white/grey items so that I can get a 4os polearm. Well, roughly two minutes later, I get an eth plain Partizan. One coin flip later, I have a 4os eth Partizan, and now this:

The roll is pretty, pretty, pretty bad, but it'll do for now.

Soon: NM Andy runs.
Soon aftrer: NM Mephy runs.

Goooaaal!

004.png

I've been running LK since last Sunday and hadn't had any high rune luck except:

003.png

I was starting to feel as though I was rather behind where I should be in terms of rune drops ... I'd say I'm now back on track :) .

Interestingly, I'd never gotten one of the three Ber Rune patterns before in 1.13+. I'd managed to get the one Ber Rune pattern in 1.11b ... but in 1.13+ I'd always had to settle for Sur Runes ...

Anyhow, having rustled up the basics at Mephisto, I'm now working on getting the runes for Enigma. I'm planning on my second D2R character being a Hammerdin who will be able to farm up stuff a bit better than my Frozen Orb Sorceress ... Then comes the Zealot that will run Ubers and Pandemonium Diablo :devilish: .

But I'm getting ahead of myself. I still need a Jah worth of runes ... Back to the Jungle I go!

P.S. Is there a preferred method of posting D2R screenshots? I was trying to make these smaller ... which I did ... but I'm not sure that I succeeded in making them less MBs ...

Cropping? Idk. Looks good to me.
By “pattern” do you mean the route you take to pop the chests? I feel like that’s what folks mean as I’ve noticed I can run a different route and get different results from the racks. Maybe I need to read the lk guide again

I've been rather lucky playing through nightmare with my bonemancer. Diablo dropped a skin of the vipermagi. with 26% its not a great roll, but any vipermagi is great when starting out.

Then at the start of act 5, a mal and lum dropped. Seems the game really wants me to make oath for my frost zealot. Still need to find a nice base, but the frost zealot needs to level quite a bit still, so there's time yet :)

Mmm, no. 'Pattern' is the long standing word used around the SPF to describe a super chest's drop seed. In other words, it's not random that the Ber Rune dropped along with a War Sword, Ring, and Wyrmhide Boots. That 'pattern' or 'seeded drop' has been the same since 1.13 went live in 2010. Here's a link to the thread where people were originally figuring out what 'patterns' or 'seeded drops' were available once the rune drop rate got increased in 1.13. If you hit the spoiler tab at the bottom of the first post you'll see the 'patterns' listed for the P7 Vex and Ber Runes I pictured above plus all the other seeded drops that are possible for runes Pul and up at P3, P5, and P7. This is possible because what comes out of super chests isn't random, but rather one of 65,534 predetermined possibilities.

Now, with racks though, you are correct. Rack drops are influenced by the route you take to get to them and also monsters in the area ... and probably some other factors ...

... and since we're talking about racks ...

Most of the racks on my LK map are total bummers. But, I have this one armor rack that tends to drop Totemic Masks:

005.png

So far, I've gotten three Jalal's ...

But that's not what's exciting! When there are monsters in the area to 'spoil' the Totemic Mask drop, I often get Paladin shields! Here's my top drops so far:

Sacred Targe
Defense: 132
Chance to Block: 0
Durability: 26 of 45
Required Level: 47
Required Strength: 86
Fingerprint: 0xccbf756e
Item Level: 79
Version: Resurrected
All Resistances +43

Gilded Shield
Defense: 166
Chance to Block: 0
Durability: 29 of 50
Required Level: 38
Required Strength: 89
Fingerprint: 0xcbf2361c
Item Level: 79
Version: Resurrected
All Resistances +45

Akaran Targe
Defense: 118
Chance to Block: 0
Durability: 13 of 20
Required Level: 26
Required Strength: 44
Fingerprint: 0xf9ce1ccb
Item Level: 79
Version: Resurrected
All Resistances +44

Good Paladin shields can be so hard to find. So it was super nice to able to pick up some quality Spirit bases (both for endgame and for leveling) while looking for the runes for my future Hammerdin :D . And who knows, with any luck, I may be able to come across a 45 resist all Sacred Targe before all is said and done (y) .

Wow thank you for the rundown on patterns! That’s easily understandable. So, if you find a chest that drops the items from the pattern, you should, in theory, find the rune from that pattern(?). But if the chests popping aren’t dropping in the pattern you should reroll the map?

There should be no difference between maps when it comes to chest patterns. All 65534 patterns are in theory equally likely (or unlikely). Of course people will gladly give you anecdotal evidence to the contrary. :D

I guess I don’t understand the patterns then. It sounds like there’s still a chance for any 65534. Like, what’s the point of seeing War Swords and Small Charms from chest #3? Or is it that when you see the Pattern then you know the rune in that pattern should be in the pile?
I’ve looked through the LK FAQ last night. I’ll check out the LK Pattern thread also.

Yes, you can have every one of those 65534 patterns when you open a chest. Technically speaking there are 2*65534 patterns because they are different for the locked and unlocked chests. (And they can vary by area, player setting and patch as well, so there's even more patterns)
This is because the game uses only 65534 distinct seeds for these chests when in reality it could handle more than (4 billion)^2 or more precisely 2^64 seeds. They just for some reason decided to not use all of them.

The idea used to be that if you saw a pattern you knew that there was a rune hidden in the pile of garbage that came out of the chest. This was very useful when runes were still white (up to and including patch 1.12). Nowadays they are orange, so when a rune comes out of the chest you usually see an orange flash, even if it gets buried under other items. (at least that's how it is in 1.13-1.14)

If you want the really long and complicated version of how everything works check out the chest guide in my signature. But it might be more confusing than helping :D

Knowing patterns isn't all that useful for actual farming but it is useful as a collective knowledge thing to know how many different seeds a particular rune shows up in. (And the item patterns show us if a rune drop is from a seed we've seen before.) If there are 3 known patterns for a Ber rune at a given players setting, then each chest has a 3/65534 chance of dropping one. (Which if you can run enough of the chests fast enough is the fastest way to a Ber rune — although still a whole lot of farming.)

I've done it!

Screenshot013.jpg

This is a 1.10a bkwb with +2 all skills!

I started planning on farming this item back in the day when I decided to try out time-traveling and headed back to 1.07. This sorc is 1.07 originally, farmed up some in 1.09 as well, now forward in 1.10a. I had her set up, but never quite decided to commit to the time it takes to farm one up since it can be an rng disaster to farm for one item exclusively.

Getting this one didn't take me too long, maybe 10 hours. Here's my drops during the time it took to farm it up:

Code:
Rings:
raven frost 8
manald heal 5
nagel 5
dwarf star 4
bkwb 1

Amulets:
tal ammy 2
nokazan 4
mahim oak 4
Etlitch 3
rising sun 1
highlords 2
cat's eye 2
saracen's 1

So you can see it's far better luck than some other people posted up here in the past with like 60+ rings found before they got a bkwb :ROFLMAO: . I also found 6 occy's and 8 vipermagis, along with plenty of other goodies which I just chucked onto the ground or sold to vender due to inability to mule easily. Can't use gomule or atma with the patch so self-mp is the only way and I didn't want to reroll maps and I didn't really find anything else I wanted to save that I don't already have in 1.14.

Another hilarious thing about this BKWB is it's the first one I've ever found, period, my last piece of jewelry, taking me from -12 to go on the grail to -11.

The question is do I go for a second one?!

Edit: Just in case someone is searching for it, I use an old version of bliss version switcher from way back in the day, where 1.10a is not one of the options. I'm not sure why this is, but 1.10b in that bliss version switcher is actually 1.10a. Maybe he just thought 1.10b(eta) since people call it the 1.10 beta. I remember figuring this out before but had forgotten it so it took a little internet searching before I remembered. Kinda risky to run for hours and hours and then realize you're not even on the right version and a bkwb drops with +1..., I was a little worried that would happen until the moment I IDed this ring.

Well, yes, obviously. And then after you've got two to forward to 1.14, you'll want to get another two just in case you also want to forward two to D2R, and then ... o_O

I think I remember now why I decided I'd keep all items in the patch where they dropped. :D

But seriously, I'd go for a second (and did back when I was time traveling and sending items through patches). (y)

Well the sorcy is staying there so it's not like I can't ever go back and do it. no need for that sorc to move. tryin to decide between d2r and 1.14 for the ring
