Anything Goes D2 Lounge!

@Pancakes For a long time I didn't really think I needed Infinity. Just too expensive, but once I made one I have changed my mind. Now the only reason for not having one that I can see is that you never use an Act 2 Merc or just use poison.

I think that there is some debate over what base is best. Unless you have a very specific build in mind I don't think that you can go wrong using any of them. I do think that the CV strength requirement eliminates it.

Another choice that you have to make is if you want to use an ethereal base. You get more damage, but it means oly the merc can use it.

I'm starting by rolling the base. I hope that will give me time to overcome the panic of spending 90% of my accumulated rune wealth.

Pain.

I try not to get in a rut in using low level twinking gear and so I do try different items. I've always liked the Cow King's boots for the 30% FRW and MF at level 13, but had not tried out the whole set. So, I thought why not. Hopefully, I'm not the last to learn that Blizzard modded the full set bonuses in D2R. This is what 3 pieces gives you at level 25:

I was entirely unaware, thank you for this public service announcement. Now if the Cow King would ever give up his precious leathers I could take advantage...

Oh my post got lost with forum maintenance, but i was asking if somebody knows what is the deal with some type of items like staves dropping more rarely than others from racks. I thought only metallic items could drop from racks, so staves look like wooden in game. But i found accidentally a rack dropping like 1-5% of time war staff and this could be huge for finding a good obsession base.

Unfortunately this HC char is dead now, so i do not have the map anymore. But it started to drop the staves rarer in the end. Think i managed to get around 20 before RIP, none of which were any good

@Naab this is like that mechanic where you can get holy shield on scepters. It’s “impossible” but d2 does some thing where if enough checks roll as a fail, it goes to a drop pool with more items. So staves etc are not truly impossible from racks, just very rare.

So I would guess a stable war stuff rack is so rare it’s not worth looking for. But agreed if you had one, that would be huge.

Just mat'ed a Demon Machine sorc and this damage is unbelievable. I don't even have the full build going yet (short Flickering Flame and torch) and she still melts p5 cows with staggering speed. The funny part is the price I paid for this damage is generating no finds whatsoever during her journey. A Lum for Hell forge drop, for instance. Funny how this game works sometimes.

I had an odd thought while pondering about weapons for a fire magezon I'm building:

Has anyone here ever tried a Breath of the Dying runeword in a missile weapon?

Just wondering. Feels like a Zod-wasting heresy to make a BotD that isn't an eBotD, but bows and crossbows never drop ethereal anyway.

@Swamigoon Here's what Wmeredith said in his 2006 Guide to Runewords and your Bow

-It's a waste of a Zod.
-A powerful bow to be sure but the cons are many.
-You have to put it in a slow bow since it requires 6 sockets.
-The poison nova is annoying/laggy and does futile damage.
-You could just pin a badge on your sleeve that says "n00b" and you would get a similiar effect.
-This is the O.G. (That's original gangsta - for those keeping score) rune word for vulgar displays of power, but it's real potential is unlocked in an eth weapon, which, sadly, a bow can never be. (It has no durablility; it can't spawn eth.)
-This bow is not all that bad, but in terms of style, grace, and general 1337ness, it effing blows. It's kind of like wearing a Dolce & Gabbana tux that's mustard yellow. It was expensive and serves a purpose, but we're all sure that you're a moron.

Wmeredith clearly assumes that you (you as in a general you) will share items between your characters and that you have a need for maximum damage for the sake of it. Those things can be true or not be true.

@Swamigoon
A mageazon using freezing arrows or immolation or exploding arrows would probably like the poison nova since it prevents healing in a group of monsters, just like her skills damage a group. She is also short on damage and leeching and the rune word provides both. To me it sounds like an uncommonly well suited rune word for the kind of character.

Then again, the fact that someone has called it heresy is more than enough reason for me to go for it if I would ever come across a zod and a vex with any character.

Wmeredith doesn't like slow bows, but BotD also gives you a huge 60% IAS. Another issue with the 6 socket runewords is that you can't put them in a GMB or Matriarch bow. The only Amazon bow that has 6 sockets is the Exceptional Ceremonial Bow.

Silence the other 6 socket runeword is a lot cheaper and while it only offers 20% IAS and no Life leach, it does give 11% Mana Leach, plus 2 MPK , plus 2 to skills and 75 to Resistances.
