Let's do the math:
To sum up:
Using unrealistically optimistic estimates, without sleeping, or breaks of any kind, it would take:
32.8 hours to cube up a Pul
87.48 days to cube up a Vex
15.32 years (without breaks or sleep) to cube up a Zod

So, technically, you're right, it is now much, much easier to cube up a Zod. 59,000 times easier. It's still not gonna happen.

LOL, I can't argue with your math. I knew the lower runes were worthless, but I'd never done the math before. Thanks for taking the time to answer with such clarity.

I have never ever left a rune sitting on the ground - I guess I'll break that habit someday. But not today.

Is it possible that Countess drops where altered in some way, or is this the result of increased drops in general?

In 20 runs: Hel, Hel, Hel, Fal, Lem, Lem.

Just the general increase. All the special drop does is that it goes to the "Runes 12" row of the drop tables.

are you guys happy with new drop rates. i kind of hate them but i havent upgraded yet tho so i wanna ask your opinion. i think it is kind of boring, you see a zod and dont get excited. then what is the point of playing it :)

people will start to reroll BotD :D

It's really not like that. While some are lucky and get a HR on their third run, some (including me) run cows/travincal/Alvl85 areas for 10 hours and are yet to find anything Mal+. Finding a Zod rune is still a big find.

I've done a number of Baal, Diablo, and AT runs and haven't had a high rune drop yet. From AT I got a Pul, 3xLEM, 3XKO, 2xFAL along with some Amns, Orts, Rals and some lesser runes.

Even if the statistics show a lot higher drop rate, the HRs are still not really common. It's not like they drop all over the place. I have been playing 1.13b since it came out (not doing any runs) and I have found 1 Jah and 1 Ist and some mid runes and I cannot say it's too much. It made me happy and excited anyway. :)
And the annoying Els aren't as frequent, which is a good thing...

Yep. I had a Ber and Ohm withing 10 runs after upgrading. Nothing over Mal ever since - that's about 10 - 15 hours worth of running Travincal, Cows and Countess.

A bunch of Fals, Ums and Lems though.

I like it. I was also disappointed at first - Ber dropped and I was like "bleh". But then, I went to build compilation post and saw that with some luck I will be able to make a lot of builds in there. Like Riftadin, for example.... which got me all excited.

I've played 1.13 since I restarted (both a and b versions) and after levling a barb up to lvl83 and running close to 900 Meph runs the highest rune I've found is an Um (dropped from Meph) and a Pul (dropped from the chest behind him).

Admittedly Meph isn't a good target at all for runes but still, 900 runes should count for something.

We'll see when I start running Trav with the barb after another 100 Meph runs on the Sorc though.

I like the idea though. Now I can get those high runewords that I'd never get without extreme luck since I don't have the time for thousands upon thousands of runs.

As mentioned before, even though the item find thread may suggest otherwise, HRs aren't really exactly common. For reference: Let's say you run cows on /p7 and kill 400 cows in 6 minutes. It would take you 41 runs or 4 hours to find a rune above Mal. To find a rune Vex+, it will take you 80 runs or 8 hours. For a Zod, you need to spend 2800 runs or 280 hours.

Also, what I don't quite get is why some people, who complain about the new drop rates, run targets that are well known to drop them quite frequently.

It's not a BER or SUR but it's still a pretty sweet drop and it's my highest drop in 3-4 days of playing the 1.13b patch.

Disclaimer: I am still playing (when I play) version 1.11. Yesterday I figured out there were actually two versions of the 1.13 patch. Tonight I read/skimmed the last ~20 pages of the post to educate myself on the changes between 1.13 a/b.

Actual post: I find all the attention given to rune drops amusing, but mostly warranted. As a rather sporadic player, I think it's a good thing. My highest rune drop ever was an Ohm about (literally) seven years ago on b.net. It would be cool to match that. After reading everyone's comments and thoughts, I'm starting to consider the increased rune drops a nice single-player patch change. Some of you all have ran specific areas/targets for unimaginable amounts of time and obtained some insanely rare items. And yeah, it sucks that a future patch will make similar achievements much easier. But look what 1.09 cows did to the game with respect to reaching clvl 99. For the general/casual SP player, you now have a hope of making a cool, high-end rune word.

Also: Users can now toggle the display of text over the Health and Mana
globes by clicking on the bottom area of each orb.

automatically creates a Hell difficulty game if possible.

I also read that the Paladin's Charge bug and (more importantly to me, because I love this build) the Barb's Leap bug have been fixed? Finally something worthwhile!!

And I'm pretty stoked about Immolation Arrow and Hydra getting buffed - two of my favorite under-powered builds.

Yup, doesn't work. Seems like something that shouldn't be hard to get right, eh? It's not too big of a deal, though--one thing that does work is that 'H' is hotkeyed to Hell and 'N' to Nightmare, so you can use those if you want to be quick and/or you're afraid of misclicking and losing your maps. I just press Enter and H really quick when I'm doing repetitive MFing runs.

Enter twice would be a lot safer... if it only worked.

Hmm, I haven't had any problem with that. I guess it would be easy to hit the wrong key if you were quickly moving a single finger from Enter to H, but that's not what I do. When I'm MFing, right after S&E I move my left hand over so that my left forefinger rests on Enter and left pinky rests on H. Then as soon as I click on Single Player I tap the forefinger and pinky in rapid succession. It works well and I've done thousands of runs like that without accidentally pressing N.

How many times can a character respec? Do you just click the option Akara gives you and bam, all stat/skill points reset?

Respec is unlimited, but after the respec quest reward(s) from Akara is/are used up, you have to find the 3 special items from different act bosses and cube them up (can't remember what they're called exactly other than "Essence" something) for a new respec.

For characters mat'd & pat'd prior to 1.13, you only get the respec quest award in Hell I believe. For characters that you've created in 1.13 you get one respec quest award for each level (i.e., Normal, NM, and Hell).

Edit: was in a hurry and missed the point of the question...yes,once you click Akara's respec thingy all skill points and stats are reset and all of them are unspent.

My take on 1.13b runes:

Since moving up, I've done some hell cows and AT, though no more than a dozen of each. Most play-time was questing from A3 NM to A1 hell with a frenzy barb.

I picked up every rune other than a single "El" so far, and this is what is in my 1.13 stash:

4x Amn
3x Dol
1x Eld
2x Eth
1x Fal
1x Io
2x Ith
1x Ko
1x Nef
10x Ort
1x Pul
5x Ral
5x Shael
4x Sol
4x Tal
8x Thul
3x Tir

I like it a lot. Since runes aren't MF-dependent, I am no longer as attracted to MFing and can just quest more, pat/mat more chars, and hopefully enjoy a few useful runes along the way.

Respec is unlimited, but after the respec quest reward(s) from Akara is/are used up, you have to find the 3 special items from different act bosses and cube them up (can't remember what they're called exactly other than "Essence" something) for a new respec.

To clarify, there are four essences dropped by the act bosses:

Andariel/Duriel: Twisted Essence of Suffering
Mephisto: Charged Essence of Hatred
Diablo: Burning Essence of Terror
Baal: Festering Essence of Destruction

The four essences cube up into a token that can be right-clicked to provide a respec. The item itself is single-use, but the respecs are unlimited in the sense that a character can use as many of the respec tokens as you can make. As you might imagine, it's easy to farm up large quantities of essences from Meph and Andariel, and the ones from Diablo and Baal take longer to collect.
