Reposting here as I plan to quest the remaining couple of characters of this project some time soon.

So I started this thread recently about building a Zealot/FoH Paladin that only uses items found on my untwinked 99er characters. Now I've been thinking about it some more, and figured while I'm joining the project/theme crowd, I might as well go for a sept with this "twinked by untwinked" approach as a long-term side project.

The general ideas are

(1) to make the most use of cool/rare items found exclusively by untwinked characters,
(2) at least try and incorporate an element with each class that I never used before, while
(3) hopefully keeping the characters strong at the same time. Don't really like "fun builds" that can't kill anything. ;)

To the extent possible, I want to build them around one or two "core items", i.e. rare S&Us, good rares or crafts that I thought were special. For the characters that are going to be using Enigma or Infinity, these items will be shared among them and/or borrowed from my untwinked 99ers. They farmed many runes, but not that many. :) Apart from that however, I intend to use each item on only one character. I've also rolled enough CtAs to give one to each character.

Original plan:
Build: FA/Strafer

Basic idea:

Played FA Zon before using M'avina's set which is a lot of bang for the buck, but I've always wanted to try with Ice. It's maybe a tiny bit disrespectful to find a WF and use it only partially ;) but there just wouldn't be much novelty to it for me at all if I focused on physical damage with her. Also again considering skillers, found a few Bow/Crossbow ones that come in handy for FA. Will use either Insight Merc to be able to spam FA or Faith Merc, depending on how mana upkeep works out. In case of Faith Merc, she will use the same Faith made for the Druid (apart from Enigma/Infinity, this would then be another exception to the approach of using each item on only one character).

EDIT: I decided to go with 'Ice' in Mat Bow in the end because of more convenient IAS breakpoints for her envisaged setup (see post below). Still not sure about armor. Probably not going with CoH as I don't want to spend more HRs on her than necessary, but Viper, Gloom, Treachery, Smoke, Peace all seem to be very good low cost options.

Assassin

  • Hoto/Spirit on trap/teleport switch
Basic idea:

Not too crazy a build here. It will be fun to use traps, again due to the high amount of skillers found on my untwinked journey. And obviously I need to make use of my first ever Stormlash. So K/T it is. Stormlash rolled a terrible 241 ed, but it will do as it will be used for CB vs LIs/single targets mostly.

Key gear: Last Wish, Stormlash, godly rare circlet

Barbarian
Patriarch Sting (Write-up)
Original plan:
Build: Frenzy/Throw
Core items:

Basic idea:

This one is going to be pretty standard Frenzy mostly. But I never made a throw barb and would like to mess around with that at least a little bit, also never really used Grandfather and Azurewrath. I'm afraid he'll just end up using Frenzy most of the time, but the Lacerators will hopefully be put to use periodically for the AD.

EDIT: Ended up foregoing the swords, committed to the Throw Barb approach (see write-up) and didn't regreat it!

Druid

Need to use Earth Shifter at some point!

EDIT: I gave this some more thought and will maybe take a different route. Even with a -req jewel in Earth Shifter, statting for both Earth Shifter and Faith is a bit inconvenient. I prioritize the Earth Shifter of course, so he might end up borrowing the low-req Beast from my untwinked Necro instead of Faith. That would mean he can't really be part of much fighting vs. FIs, but I think I want to stick with the Fire/Summon approach instead of going melee/shapeshift with the Earth Shifter. I'll try with Faith and see if I can get high enough life still, and otherwise might still go with Faith Merc for the FA Zon below.

Basic idea:
Always wanted to utilize FB/FW from TO set, and never used Poison Dagger, so this seems to make sense... @DiabloTwoinDC made a character with the Fire bonus from TO and Mang Song's recently and I again thought that sounds like fun, even though now this one will feel a bit like a copy-cat. :)

  • Blackbog's Sharp, socketed with poison facet
  • TO Shield
  • TO Belt
  • TO Gloves
  • Bramble

  • 2x FCR/Resist/useful adds rings

Basic idea:
Posted details about him in the thread linked above. Basically full focus on physical damage to make the most out of the DC, but with the ammy I'll be going for 125% FCR for fast teleport on switch. Since that will be achieved with stuff like Hoto and Spirit, I'll try and use FoH (which I've never used) as a PI solution. Merc will probably be Infinity if it works out, to make FoH viable and also help with AR.

Basic idea:

Not really interested in a caster Sorc, also no truly unique Sorc finds (apart from a beautiful 15/19 Griffon's Eye, which however is already in use on my untwinked 99er Sorc). So I wanted to go melee. I've played a dual Dream Bear Sorc before and really enjoyed her, but none with Passion so far. While the Dragon variant will be weaker than Dreams, I've always wanted to build it as well, and of course it's cheaper on the rune side. I'll probably go single Dragon + Stormshield with her.

EDIT: Decided to go double Dragon in AP and Troll Nest (see last post on this page) as I've come to think about how single Dragon would not add any meaningful damage at all, but did want to use it so...

EDIT 2: Also decided to go with HoJ over Passion (see write-up linked above).

Paladin:

Seems I managed to finish this guy before going on hiatus for a while. He is part of my sept of characters using only items found by my two untwinked 99ers and trying to make use of "less commonly used but good" items and skills. He was originally intended to use an ethereal Death Cleaver for Zeal and a 125% FCR switch, making use of a 2/20 Paladin craft amulet... though he didn't turn out exactly like that. ;)

He started out with Envy jeweled stuff until he was able to equip the full Death's set, which was then used for the rest of normal. Mid 20s till late 30s was the most terrible part, as it often is, with underpowered weapons (and refusal to ever throw hammers on his part). Things started to move very quickly again after equipping an Oath eth Ettin Axe at lvl 52. He used that until he was able to switch to his end game choice:

As for FoH – he did use it occasionally, but upon reaching Hell I thought it was completely useless :( even with an Infinity Merc and even when solely used as a PI solution. Handing Reaper's to the Merc did the job (and much better than FoH) in literally every scenario I encountered. And while I was holding on to faster cast rate breakpoints, I eventually moved away from the original 125% FCR idea, settling for 48% in the end.

So he ended up being a rather usual Zealot, but with somewhat unusual gear. Death Cleaver's 66% Deadly Strike enables some flexibility when it comes to headpiece, amulet and boots. And while I wanted to keep the CB items (Guillaume's Face and Gore Rider), I didn't need HLW and played around with numerous amulet/ring/belt combinations.

For general gameplay he settled for the setup as used for his Pat Baal run:

The crafted caster belt may seem whacky, but it fits nicely – without it I wouldn't hit 48% FCR and 48% FHR (unless swapping in FHR charms, but charms are hard to manage as is and I prefer to include damage there to the extent possible).

I was fooling around with Travincal runs and levelled him quite a bit there – the 2/20 amulet is rlvl 89 so I did a couple of extended pit stops along the way. Well, he's not bad at all when it comes to running Trav:


~25-27 seconds is way better than I had thought, and that's a crap map as you can see ;) (though admittedly for Zeal it's not that important to have the Council members clumped together).

I did go with the Death Cleaver + Exile setup at first as well and it worked nicely. But having lucked out with a perfect ED BotD recently, I had to go and use that one, and indeed it mows down the council faster than the 1h + shield setup.

I tried to include the Zeal damage numbers in the vid but Might didn't trigger on the last run and I was too lazy to record another one. :p

I really liked the build and gameplay. I never used Exile before. Apart from the pain of getting a semi-decent base even, the main reason was Life Taps overriding Decrepify, which I always thought is a considerable loss of damage while provoding extra defensive stats that are not really required. And yes it is lower damage, and thus not exactly ideal for efficiency-oriented runs. But for more casual playing, it's very convenient. The loss of Decrepify is not that big of a deal (and it triggers more often than Life Tap after all), while having always one or the other active makes for smooth sailing in basically any area of the game.

About Grief: I used a high roll Grief a little bit to compare how much of a difference it makes in comparison to the eth DC. While it's stronger of course, the eth DC setup was not as far behind as I had thought. Really made me think of the eth DC as quite a top end weapon. As to how Grief compares to a eBotD two hander for running Travincal – I'd pick the eBotD any time. :)

Assassin:

This is the fourth Mat/Pat of this sept of characters that only use things found by my two untwinked 99er characters. (Though in her case there is a little asterisk – see below.)

I'm not very experienced with Assassins. I had previously played one standard LS/DS Trapper, one physical Kicker and one Rift-Kicker. So I used this character as a testing ground for all kinds of builds and gear variations.

And boy she went through a lot of transformations. But starting at the beginning: I started her sometime late last year as a change of scenery from when my untwinked Necro was approaching 99. There were three items I had obtained from my 99ers which I wanted to use with her:

1) Stormlash
2) Last Wish
3) This fantastic circlet:

Originally she was planned to be a K/T Sin using Stormlash. I floated the idea of such a build as a cow runner, but couldn't test her at the time. That was basically between breaks from diving in the Caribbean. :) But I was itching to play her, and finally got around to it after RFL R1 ended.

The Questing

Pretty uneventful. She started with Envy jeweled stuff and switched to Wake of Fire once it was available. This was used all the way through NM, adding better gear such as Stealth, Spirit, SoJs etc. along the way while levelling up. She only respec'ed to a DS-centered build at the beginning of Hell. I equipped Enigma at lvl 65 and didn't even properly quest in Hell, but rather rushed through to A5 to gain more levels to equip her end game gear. Her first death only came after Mat – I may have a Guardian one day after all. ;)

Then came the long phase of trying different setups and skills. I knew I wanted to play a hybrid and use skills I hadn't used before, but being rather unexperienced with Assassins, I didn't know what exactly to look for. This was what I tried with her:
  • DT/DS Kick/Trap hybrid with Stormlash
  • DT/DS Kick/Trap hybrid with Last Wish
  • BF/DS Furysin with Stormlash
  • BF/DS Furysin with Last Wish
The respective Stormlash variants were better offensively. The Last Wish setups on the other hand were super tanky – and moreover allowed use of Defiance Merc since it provides Might. Very similar for DT vs BF: The DT variants had higher damage potential but some survivability issues, whereas BF was a little slower but very safe and easy gameplay.

Generally I came to really like Blade Fury. The fact that it can trigger a huge variety of effects (CtC, leech, CB etc.) makes it super fun to play around with using different weapons. Could even go with things like Rift or Lacerator.

The Cow Build

After killing Hell Baal I got around to Cow runs. I tried all of the above approaches here as well, but in the end respec'ed her to the more powerful FB/DS build. But for a long time I stuck with Last Wish – I really liked the Defiance Merc + Might from Last Wish (despite not making use of its other effects).

At one point I also included a Phoenix shield from my general stash, removing her "twinked by untwinked characters" status – but only after Mat. :p It then took me some time to get the idea of including Beast to power up the Merc further. This turned her into one hell of a Cow runner. Some more information on her in this post and this one. Runs on P5 are very fast:

Normal and NM were played on P8 all the way, the first tough stretch was ~18-25 where the available weapons weren't that great. From then on it was a walk in the park through Normal and NM. Hell was hard. Everything died instantly to FA... except of course CIs, and because of that she had to go down to P5 and then P3 from A3 onwards. Ancients to Baal was done on P1.

I gotta say she was fun and essentially worked out as planned. But Bowazons in general are just so underpowered :( made me remember why I haven't played one in a long time. FA did massive damage in Hell also, everything not CI died immediately, but against those she was slow, and that resulted in tough situations. The Windforce on Strafe switch did a great job and added some mana leech and crowd control with Knockback as intended. It's just that Bowies are so fragile and their damage is rather low even with good items. She died several times also, once in Normal and three times in Hell. All deaths were avoidable and a consequence of sloppiness, but it kind of shows what I mean. ;)

Her setup was improved later on to the list above. In Hell A4 I was trying out Peace as can be seen in the vid, which I found interesting with the level 15 Valk (as I didn't have too many spare skill points I didn't push Valk a lot). Wasn't really worth it though, still remains a crap armor. :) Faceted Viper worked much better, I then respec'ed once to get lvl 8 Valk at least. I used 3/10 gloves for most of the playthrough, but switched to LoH for some most welcome FR and the huge boost to damage vs demons, as FA was really powerful anyway and I found the physical damage boost to be more helpful.

One thing I underestimated during planning was low AR for Strafe, since I didn't (want to) stat high Dex, and Penetrate could only be pushed more towards the end and not maxed either. Because of this I ended up using an Infinity Merc over Insight, which solved that and moreover increased FA damage of course. Also Insight wasn't quite as useful as I had hoped. Eventually I relied on a combination of mana per kill (8 in total) and leech (4% on Ice switch, 11% on WF switch). Using WF switch to fire a volley of strafe that filled up mana immediately so that worked just fine.

HF was Nef/Pul/Lem. She ran 0 MF and didn't get any good drops, only these are worth mentioning at all:

Next up is most likely the Paladin as I want to run a more powerful build now, otherwise I'll get frustrated. :D

After completing the third untwinked 99er (Paladin), it's really time to finish this one – even though it's less restrictive by now given two additional 99ers since I started the sept...

#5 was Barbarian. No standalone thread as there isn't much to tell – basically a straight-forward Throw/Frenzy Barb.

He started out with Envy jeweled bow and armor before switching to 2x Death's sword and set once able to equip it, with the help of a Str/Dex charm inventory. He used this until lvl 30 when he equipped two Bloodletters, followed by Butcher's Pupils at lvl 39. Double Swing and Frenzy were the skills of choice up to this point. When he hit lvl 44, he was able to use Deathbit, and started fooling around with Double Throw. At lvl 49 he made an Oath in an eth Small Crescent, getting a nice 331 ED roll. He also made a Fortitude, using the remaining HRs from my most recent 99er.

Levels were gained mostly at Eldritch/Pindle in Normal and Nightmare, the latter in particular from getting Oath until 68. That's when he was able to equip all of his end game gear except Warshrikes, which completed his final setup at lvl 75 and his transiation into a full-time Throw Barb:

The original plan was to also use swords for Frenzy, but I realized I'd probably end up using only Frenzy out of laziness, which wasn't the idea... So I comitted to throwing weapons entirely.

I went for lvl 9 Frenzy after BO, so that I hit last throw BP with 40 IAS from LoH and HLW and Frenzy active (which I wanted all the time anyway for fast movement). Giant Skull with two ED jewels worked great, knockback helped a lot for questing and the damage boost was great. I've been wanting to use one for a while, and this seemed like a good build for it.

Overall this guy was pretty solid. He suffered no deaths at all, though I went through Hell on P1 only, given he had some issues with being swarmed on higher player settings. Even with Razortail and Warshrikes' piercing, Double Throw is still not a "real" AoE skill obviously. Damage output wasn't too bad though (~4-8k with eth Warshrike) and the P1 Hell gameplay was very easy.

I've read about many complaints about weapon repairs and how annoying it was, but found with two weapon sets one could reduce town trips to a reasonable amount. It didn't bother me much at all to be honest. (I kept a third Warshrike in inventory though, to even things out because I wanted to use the ethereal one whenever I could, which couldn't be repaired in town ofc.)

I also used 2x eth Demon's Arch and 2x Gimmershred apart form the 2x Warshrike + Lacerator setup. The latter combo is clearly superior against anything non-PI, but those other weapon pairs also had some merit and saw use in areas with PIs.

Biggest question for this character to me is Merc weapon. I tried several, even briefly went with Faith Merc in order to hit last Throw BP even when Frenzy is not active, but found Might Merc was much better. For weapon I ended up using Infinity because it eliminates any CtH issues (he ist still only lvl 82 and needs to beef up some more for good CtH). Before that I played around with Doom – since I just made one and heard it's a great Merc weapon :) – and Reaper's. The latter was fine as it meant either Amp or Decrep is up pretty much all the time, but didn't like losing out on some damage when it overrides Amp from Lacerator.

In the end I think Pride is the top choice for this guy, provided the Merc can be kept safe with it (since he has basically no leech then). I currently only have one on my general/twinked characters, so he wasn't allowed to use it for the playthorugh. But I might play around with him some more and try it (as well as eth Lacerators) and maybe do some gameplay recording as well in the future.

Anyway, lots of fun to play this build! Necro and Druid left...

Planning and play-through issues
She was originally planned to be a dual Dragon Zeal Enchantress. With the help of a few recently shopped twinking staves she quickly made it through to A4 normal, and subsequently focussed on Fire skills. She was then mostly played as FB/FO Sorc until she was able to equip her Dragons and Passion and quested her way through Hell. However, a majority of her levelling was done at Pindle NM and eventually Pindle Hell, for which she cheated a little bit and mostly relied on Fire Ball.

Alas: Things didn't quite go according to plan as far as the melee gameplay goes. Initially, she focussed on Hydra synergies to get the most out of the CtC from Dragon (inspired by @Grape's Zod God Sorc), but at some point I realized it wasn't really worth it, also she couldn't face tank enough to actually spawn those Hydras at a meaningful pace. (Later on, I respec'ed her once to max Enchant, Warmth and Fire Mastery first and only then pump synergies.) Most importantly, though, I was quite underwhelmed with her melee gameplay mid-way through A5 Hell. She was just too squishy, with bad FHR, lack of physical damage meaning little to no leech, given the meagre physical damage from Passion PB, lack of AR, meaning fewer Hydras, lower damage and even lower life upkeep, on top of a pretty low life total of around 1200. I tried Dracul's Grasp for a while upon hitting 76, but it was not enough to rely on for safety with her setup at that opint.

Shying away from melee combat with more than 1-2 random monsters was getting kind of frustrating and not exactly the goal here :rolleyes: but I was set on using the Dragons I made for her – so what to do?

Let's go crazy
I did some thinking and at one point I realized that a more whacky route could be her best option, namely that using Hand of Justice and turning her into a Bear Sorc could solve almost all of her issues. Behold, that played out to be the case indeed, turning her from a squishy wimp into quite a beast (pun intended)! Sure this meant losing Zeal from dropping Passion, but that's a relatively small sacrifice for a still very fast normal attack (8 fpa), as well as great FHR breakpoints and a huge life pool in bear form. Another 16 Holy Fire levels from HoJ increased her aura to a respectable lvl 44, ITD meant AR issues were largely a thing of the past and decent physical damage from HoJ provided at least some life upkeep via leech. Fire damage would also improve noticeabley vs broken FIs thanks to the -20 EFR. Freeze and leech are helpful as well – in fact every single HoJ stat is. :)

I went with a PB for HoJ, enabling 8 fpa with only one more source of IAS, since I meant to focus on fire damage and faster procs. Apart from the Hydras, I also intended to use Dracul's Grasp again after switching to the Beast setup. I played a dual Dream Bear Sorc before with Dracul's, and knew the physical damage provided by a HoJ PB would be enough get back to 100% quickly once Life Tap procs. I used the best base my untwinked 99ers found (13% ED) and got an amazing HoJ roll (328% ED of a possible 330):

So this meant she was using the following core pieces:
  • Dragon Troll Nest
  • Dragon Archon Plate (yes I know that's a waste of some strength points but I had to think about the future good looks of a Paladin as well here ;))
  • Hand of Justice PB
  • Switch: Lidless Wall with Beast (which was borrowed from my 99er Necro), with CtA (+3 BO) in inventory to pre-buff
The rest then fell into place quite naturally:
  • Kira's Guardian '7 FHR, min/max dmg, 27 FR jewel': Incredibly good fit for her. FHR, massive resists and CNBF: All of these stats are extremely good and free up other slots to use with better items (rings and skillers in particular). The other route I contemplated was Guillaume's Face to help with FIs, but it's not that big of a deal with a strong Infinity Merc, and it would have meant way more shortcomings gearing around Guillaume's Face.
  • Dual BKWB for higher everything (damage/Enchant/FM, BO, Werebear...), a little extra life and some leech.
  • Arachnid Mesh: More damage and very welcome FCR, enabling her to at least hit 40% on switch.
  • Highlord's Wrath for the skill and the IAS required to hit 8 fpa. This meant she could use the below gloves.
  • Dracul's Grasp: While it wasn't a big help before switching to HoJ and Beast, same as with dual Dream Sorc I found this was the most utility from this slot. In bear form she can tank quite a bit so that Life Tap more often than not procs quickly enough to be helpful, resulting in a noticeable QoL improvement overall.
  • Sandstorm Trek: Together with Kira's and two SCs, this got her to 57% FHR, hitting the 54% BP (7 frames) as bear.
Inventory: 5 Burning GCs, 1 Shimmering (13) GC of Vita (36), assorted SCs (FHR, life/resist)
Merc: Infinity CV, Tal's Helm, Leviathan (the latter two due to just being lvl 82 at this point)

No extra Enchant pre-buff gear, just CtA.

Core stats after BO and in bear form (except FCR):
  • Attack damage: 12-14k
  • Attack speed: 8 frames
  • Life/Mana: 2500/440
  • FHR: 57 FHR, 7 frames
  • Resists: 69/40/64/75
  • 22% life leech
  • FCR: 40% on switch, 10 frames

Some conclusions regarding Enchantress I learned:
  • Leftover HRs are there to have fun. Spending them on whacky stuff is better than hoarding them. ;)
  • HoJ is great fun! In particular with Dragons. :p
  • Passion is... no fun at all! I still haven't tried a purely physical Enchantress (i.e. with more CB, block etc.), but I doubt I'd enjoy that any more.
  • Dual Dream Sorc is ridiculous, still much stronger than lvl 44 HF (I guess Fire Mastery is also that much worse than Lightning Mastery for some reason, and frequent unbreakable FIs don't help)
  • Cool to "accidentally" discover that Kira's Guardian can actually be best in slot.
Next?
Well, this build meant my untwinked characters' HR stashes took quite a hit obviously, so I better get back to running with them. :)
