Codenames is a team based game where a clue-giver is allowed to say a single word clue, and an optional number to try and direct his teammates to choose specific cards which correspond to his team colors.

Here is an example setup:

Only the clue-giver has access to the color coded card at the bottom. It lets them know which cards belong to his team (red vs blue). Tan cards are neutral and don't affect the game. The black card is the assassin, which in this setup corresponds to the word "NET". Your team automatically loses if they select the assassin word card.

Sample turn:
In this setup, blue team goes first (since there are 9 blue cards to red's 8). Blue team clue-giver might notice that they have two "location" words, Rome and Egypt. However, there is also France and Tokyo (neutral). They may want to give a clue like "empire" or "ancient" and then add the number "two" afterwards (indicating how many cards they would like their teammates to choose). Let's just say the clue was "ancient, two" and the blue team debates and finally chooses Rome and Egypt. Well done! 👍

On red's turn, the clue giver notices that red has two animal cards, Whale and Mouse. So, a simple clue of "animal" might be good. Then, they realize that Ray is also one of their cards (stingray, manta ray etc). So, they might want to give a clue of "animal, three" to try and force their team into finding the less obvious card as well.

In all the clue giving it is important not to give a clue that could lead your team to the assassin card, else you automatically lose. First team to reveal all cards of their color wins.

images.jpegNice. 2 out of 3. 💪

** NOTES **
- I'm just giving this a try, so not following the rules to a T. But, normally your turn ends the moment you flip a card that isn't your team's color. So a good tip is to start from your strongest link and work your way down to less "certain" cards.
- Another rule, which you all are welcome to exploit here, is that you are allowed up to one EXTRA guess, beyond the number that the clue giver says. So, for example, blue team should remember that there is still a "nature" card out there they want to find. Maybe next round they want to throw in an extra guess to try to turn that card as well. 👍

* This wasn't the card I was hinting at, but thought it may be guesses as well. 👍

Neutral. Again 2 out of 3 is pretty good. 👍

* Note - you aren't allowed to make comments like that in the real game

What do you think @snickersnack? Is it worth giving this a shot on the forums? You are supposed to have a team dynamic, where the players debate/vote on which cards they should pick. But, as you can see, the game works with the minimum, a clue-giver plus one "guesser" for each team. So, it can be played with as little as 4 players.

How are the teams formed? Would it be like any even number of players gets divided into two groups? Can there be 3 teams?

Yea, I suppose there could be three teams.. the actual game only has two though. You can have as many people as you want on each team. 👍

There may be an issue of game balance with three teams though. There is one additional card of the color for the team which goes first. Games are usually only 3-4 rounds. So, going first is a big advantage, hence the extra card. Being the third team may be an advantage, because you have two turns of cards that have already been revealed before your team's turn, hence narrowing your choices. I've never tried, but it might be worth a shot if you have a LARGE group. 🤷‍♂️
