Ogre Axes have a max of 3 sockets so you can't make Insight (4 runes) or Obedience (5 runes) in it so...I guess your choice is pretty easy now.

Colossus Voulge requires 210 STR, even when it is ethereal you can't equip it on your merc until quite high level. That makes the choice even more clear heh?

Smips, you also might want to consider other weapons than Colossus Voulge. It has quite massive strength requirements, so you might want other weapon to use before merc reaches CV's requirements. Cryptic Axe, Giant Thresher or Thresher are good options.

Question: with monsters that suffer 'collateral damage' deaths, as when you kill Shenk, Andariel, etc and nearby monsters die, how does the game handle this?

In particular, does MF/GF work, and what, if any, experience is awarded?

The game kills them, thus 0 exp, 0 MF, 0 GF.
