There is nothing wrong with hoz as a shield. It is actually from good to great for about any paladin build that I can think of. But in my guide I recommend the optimal/best gear. And for this particular build hoz works of course but is not optimal.
In ubertristram from our shield we want mostly resists, and of course, sufficient base damage to leech enough with life tap. An elite sanctuary shield with 95-115% resist, a griswold shield with 3pdiamond/3xum, have the leech we want and more resists. Normal hoz has sufficient leech but less resists. Upgraded one has probably a bit more leech too but the resists gap is there and it can be even easily 30% or 39% all res (gris 3pdiamond-3xum) to 45% (perfect resists sanctuary). If we use a weapon that has + damage too, like grief, base shield damage is insignificant, but hoz is still sort on resists. It doesn't provide any advantage over sanctuary that would make me use it.
Now,with the Death berserker axe setup,I skipped sanctuary, but instead hoz,I recommended Exile. Why? A rich person can probably afford an elite exile with 40%+ all res. Death zerk axe, requires an effective 60% ias from rest of the gear to hit max smite speed that I find essential. Exile allows him take 20%ias from his gloves (dracul's aren't needed). With an extra 15% from guil face (the setup is for those that want near maxed cb) 10 % from nosferatu and 20 from highlord's, he can achieve max speed, keep 100% crushing blow and have life tap that triggers faster than with dracul's. Loh gloves and chains of honor armor make up for the lost resists. If I wanted to use a hoz,I would have to stick to dracul's for life tap,and socket hoz instead with 15% ias jewel. In normal conditions that would mean that hoz wouldn't offer any significant resists advantage over exile, because we lose the diamond/um from socket. Now If you love your hoz there are 15%ias/15% all res jewels to socket it with, but I don't really see why get in such a trouble and specialize the shield so much.
Yes,most uber tristram paladins use hoz. For me that doesn't mean much. A while ago most people were maxing smite as well, before realizing that 1pt is enough.
