Rebirth - Kitteh's Hardcore Journey

Perhaps @onderduiker knows? The [mlvl/2]*2-1 might not apply - maybe beetle bolt damage is calculated differently from LE bolts. Regardless, I highly doubt a single bolt will ever deal hundreds of damage, so there must be something funky going on here. Perhaps a crit could deal >100, but that still wouldn't explain this death.

If you play the clip back frame-by-frame, you seem to die in 3 frames. But in the first frame your merc takes a bunch of the bolts, so that frame tells us little. In the second frame you indeed take 1,738 damage (you go from 3,132 to 1,394 hitpoints), then in the last one you lose the remaining 1,394.

Basin Wiki is back online again, and Lightning Enchanted bolts and Scarab Demon bolts are different: buglightning inflicts (mlvl+1)/2 lightning damage, so a level 75 Dung Soldier in the Rocky Waste in Hell should only inflict 38 lightning damage per bolt (which shouldn't increase with player count, but can be doubled by a critical hit).

Upon watching the video and learning that Kitteh had Lightning Resist 75% (which should have reduced each bolt from 38 to 9.5), the first thing that sprang to mind was Fire Enchanted explosion(s): due to a bug, an FE Scarab Demon and its minions 'explode' whenever they're put into hit recovery, which makes them incredibly dangerous for a War Cry Barbarian. The targeted Dung Soldier obviously wasn't an FE Unique or minion, but if one or more of the others was...

Thanks for dropping in! I did wonder about a unique, but I don't remember any of them being a unique, and they seem to just be four ordinary beetles. It's good to know about the difference in bolts too, I thought that they just had an inherent LE mod.

(I went through the clip - he hovered his cursor over 3 of the 4 beetles.)
3 of the 4 Beetles are definitely regular beetles. The last one is the one on the left, but since he has the default palette/color I assume he also is regular. And he looks to be out of FE range anyway. :D
I'll for sure check this out in the weekend, just gonna do some testing I guess. Surely we can figure this out. We must!

Him dying doesn't bother me at all, but being unable to explain it sure does

I think only the Unique normally has a palette shift (and added light radius), not its minions. Fire Enchanted explosions have 4 yard radius in Hell, while War Cry has ~4 2/3 yard radius, which is very close.

However, this happened in v1.14d Hell, where a Dung Soldier Unique or minion FE explosion in the Rocky Waste should only inflict ~44-74 damage in total (~22-37 each fire and physical): even allowing for multiple explosions, critical hits and the unlikely event of very negative Fire Resist, I don't think that can account for losing so much life so fast (unless I'm seriously miscalculating FE explosion damage).

Hmm... it might just be a coincidence, but the Barbarian died almost immediately after the adjacent Dung Soldier did so...

Not a good day today. I've mentioned a couple of times that things are not good IRL just now, in fact in the last week my life has just been turned upside down. Anyway, so I was playing a new guardian through nightmare and I died, no bad luck this time, I just wasn't paying attention at all and didn't even consider FE. So, Luna is dead along with full Tal's, oops. That is besides the point though. The point is my reaction to the deeds, which thankfully you can't see/hear as I was not using my mic. Those who have seen my other deeds will know that I am very chill about it, that's why I play hardcore, because I'm not normally bothered by the loss. However, my psychological state at the moment is so bad that I nearly put my fist through the wall over some bloody pixels - that is not good. That is a complete flip in my mentality and tells me that I am currently in a place where I should not be doing things with the potential to induce a sudden mind **** moment, such as HC :P So, on that basis, I'm thinking maybe I shouldn't play D2 until I'm less 'like this'. However, D2 is also my single biggest (and most effective) coping method, and I can't play SC. Difficult one...

Anyway, deeds for your enjoyment. Be nice now!

RIP

I fully understand the coping part as D2 for me is a perfect distraction from this crazy world.

All the best for the future! I am sure that with some patience the right mindset (regarding D2) will come back soon.

Deepest condolences! :(

D2LoD is precisely my primary coping mechanism, and I'd be dead without it.

It's not "some bloody pixels" at all. What hurts is the frustration of the ambition of a flesh 'n' blood human being in attempting to achieve a goal. When the distinction between RL and the coping mechanism breaks down, that's very real pain.
