OT: Favourite games of all time? :)

Not in order of preference:

1. Mafia. Captured the atmosphere of the era superbly, as well as a cracking story. The shoot out in the Church during a funeral was one of the best levels of a game I have played.

2. Max Payne 2. The first game I immediately replayed once I had finished it. Mona Sax is the ultimate femme fatale.

3. GTA Vice City. Did for the ‘80s what Mafia did for the ‘20s. Riding a Freeway along the beachfront at sunset with the neon glow reflecting off a wet road as The Cult belt out “She Sells Sanctuary†is gaming heaven.

4. Half-Life 2. Ravenholm. Gravity Gun. Saw blades. Zombies. ‘Nuff said.

5. D2/LoD. I think we all know why.

easily...to me
#1 game of all-time.
FINAL FANTASY III - i havent played teh game in almost 12 years...and i can still draw the map before the floating continent, i know Kefkas laugh, i can tell you where to go and how to get there until the floating continent...its memorized...still and i haven't seen it in 12 ****ing years!

#2 Starcraft/Broodwar - played this game for 3 years...3...i dont know how..but i did.

#3 Diablo 2: LoD - played it for 2 years...quit for 1-2 years...now im back!

#4 Counterstrike - Been playing it solid for 3 years now...played a lot on my 2 year break from Diablo2

#5 TECMO SUPERBOWL for SNES!!! WOO

Other notable games: Baldurs Gate II, Final Fantasy VII, Age of Empires II

Not in any specific order:

Quake1 / Quakeworld! - The fastest, funniest, trickiest fps game till today. Need real skill to do well in this game :)

Diablo 2 / Lod - Well what can I say...

Fallout 2 - Always a pleasure to play this game, the atmosphere is awesome.

Quake 3 - Best online deathmatch fps, after the Quakeworld ofcourse :azn:

1. Diablo 2 LoD. Simply the best. I have never played any other game as much

2. Counter-Strike (v1.5 and CS:S). IMHO the best shooting game

3. HL2. Best single-player shooter

4. Diablo 1. Teh old legend

5. Some old NES games

It wasn't hard to choose the top 5, because I don't play many games. I only play those few I have a LOT

This thread has had me thinking all morning. Work is really suffering! I need to add some more:

6. Dungeon Keeper 1 and 2. Play from the bad lads point of view. Full of humour such as Imps that smoke when they're bored and everyone stopping mid-battle to dance to Disco Inferno when someone won the jackpot in the Casino.

7. Mechwarrior 3 (+Forcefeedback Joystick). Stomping through the countryside in a 40-feet tall metal behemoth, armed to the teeth makes you feel like a real badass. Especially when you zoom in with a Gauss Rifle and take an enemy Mech's leg off from half a mile away.

In no particular order:

  • D2: No surprice there.
  • Trackmania. Fun game with horrible copy protection
  • Quake 1 and the 2 extension packs. I think no modern FPS comes close in atmosphere. Imagine a remake with the techniques used in Quake 4.
  • Duke Nuke Em 3D: Go get some!

-Andi

oh **** how could i forget mech warrior3! i played that game for almost a year lol. but i had no joystick :(

FFIX - Why the hell does the main character have a tail, and why don't I have a problem with it?

NWN - Only with the PRC add-on pack. Who wouldn't want to play a 25th level Illithid Monk?

NCAA Football 2005 - Fear the option!

Romance of the Three Kingdoms VIII - I've never spent longer on a game while having no idea what the hell I was doing.

Maniac Mansion - I called the video store every Friday for 3 months straight, asking them if they had gotten it in yet. When they did, they never got it back.

Dragon Warrior VII - Almost the perfect job system, casinos, and metal slimes. Effectively the triumvirate of successful RPG making.

Buck Rogers - The first game I ever played on my Genesis, and must have rented it 5 different times. Fantastic game with strategy and RPG battles, as well as space combat, including ship boarding during battles that was actually played out.

Super Tecmo Bowl - Better than Madden way back then. I loved being able to trade my third cornerback for Rod Woodson straight up, but they wouldn't take Deion.

Killer Instinct - Possibly include the 2nd one too, but this for me is my favorite fighter of all time, even after the Soulcaliber series. You can have your fatalities, I'd rather beat my opponent with a 47-hit combo!

Dragon Warrior III - I loved the 5 chapters, with the first 4 chapters being completely autonomous and then coming together with the fifth chapter. How ahead of it's time was Chapter 3, where you're character was a shop owner, and you had to go find weapons and armor to sell to customers? If this isn't foreshadowing the current trend of MMO's 7-8 years before they occured, I don't know what is.

Diablo 2: Best Game ever since you can always replay it and still have fun
Warcraft 3: One of my favorite rts and awsome storyline
Civilization II: My favorite strategy game, developping an empire is awsome
Diablo 1: No need to say that was when we first fell in love with didi :P
Resident Evil 4: I never enjoyed a shooter like I did with this game
Final Fantasy Series: Other great rpgs, great stories too
Mario Bros 1-2-3: First games I ever played, great classics
Zelda 1-2-3: Same thing as Mario

I could name a lot more but I would say that these are my top ones

Edit: I forgot Gta San Andreas and Gta Vice City

wow i totally forgot about that game and those insane combos.

ok so here's some of my favs:

-Any EA sports game (PS2): especially Tiger Woods, Madden, NCAA Football, and Fight Night series
-SoulCaliber 1 (dreamcast): 2 and 3 are good and i like but 1 was the king of fighting games there for a while.
-GTA series (PS2): sex, drugs , violence, and crime. what's not to like? this whole series is king of free-roam games.
-WCW/NWO Revenge (N64): Dredd mentions the THQ games earlier but i want to pay special notice to this game, as it is the king of all wrestling games.
-007:Goldeneye (N64): killer game. the ultimate multiplayer game of its time
(perfect dark is also up here but not as good as 007)

My top picks in order of hours played:

1. The Marathon trilogy (I'm a Mac user too )
2. Diablo I and II
3. Escape Velocity/EVOverride (I never tried EV Nova)

Halo gets an honorable mention for the beauty of it and its Marathon references.

Hmmm, Cattleya and I seem to think alike...

Not in any particular order:

Diablo 1 & 2

Starflight and Starflight 2

Arcanum

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

Quake I, II, III

Doom

Have you ever tried HL and HL2?
The HL series has, imho, a far better and more surprising storyline than FC. I admit that Farcry has great scenery and it's very cool to sneak around in it, where HL mostly sets indoors. But the story in Farcry is much more linear and predictable, where HL is sometimes scary and confusing. The thing that makes HL stand out is exactly that, the story.

Yupp have played through both HL1 and 2 and then leaving it, with Far Cry I wanted to play through more times to take different paths toward the "objects". HL 2 was more a "one path" game, shooting some monsters move forward, with Far Cry you could throw a stone sneak past some big bad asses. And most important thing you cant save on your own in Far Cry and I like that make you value your character much more than in Half Life where you could save before every tough fights.

Please forgive me. This is quite possibly the best OT thread I've seen. I just had to add more.

Super Mario Brothers series
Almost any Super Mario Brothers spinoff
Super Smash Brothers
Legend of Zelda series
Destiny of an Emperor
Dragon Warrior series
Bionic Commando
River City Ransom
Little Ninja Brothers
Strider
Double Dragon series
Megaman series
Donkey Kong Country series
Contra series
Castelvania series
Killer Instinct/KI Gold
Street Fighter 2 in the arcade
Banjo Kazooie
Banjo Tooie
Donkey Kong 64
Goldeneye 007
Perfect Dark
Legacy of Kain/Soul Reaver series
Devil May Cry series
God of War
NFL Quarterback Club pre 2002
Madden football games post 2002

Hard to believe but each of these games were in my top 5 at one point or another and I'm sure I'm forgetting quite a few. Yes I have been playing games for quite a while and I really haven't had much of a life besides them.

Late Edit:I can't believe that I forgot the Metroid series and Kid Icarus :duh:

My list is a bit different from most

(not in any real order)
1) Diablo II (obviously)
2) Railroad Tycoon I (played this game for ever... still want to but can't find a XP port of it)
3) Ceasar III (best city building game I've found)
4) Privateer (best space sim)
5) Civilization (best game ever... no sequel to it has succeeded with me)
6) Xcom: UFO Defence (best turn base strategy to date)
7) Masters of Orion I
8) Tetris (never gets enough press... but this game was really revolutionary)
9) Ultimas (not all were great, but the entire series deserves mention. I played I-VIII and then they started getting out there for me)
10) Starcraft (by far the best RTS)

Legend of Zelda series
River City Ransom
Double Dragon series
Megaman series
Contra series
Castelvania series

Woah!! I completely forgot River City Ransom, I still remember the times when my best friend and I played RCR for a weekend non-stop trying to get all skills books, ah, the good old NES times, I was only 7 or 8 when this game came out, impressive game, really impressive. There is a new version for the GBA right?

Legend of Zelda: I completely loved Zelda II: Link's adventure and Zelda III: A link to the past, I played those games many, many times

Double Dragon: I have fond memories of DDII and especially DDIV, the ending was lame, but the game itself is very fun.

Megaman!!!! I just love that damn blue titanium-made robot! But for me the best games are the "classic" megaman (especially V) and "x" megaman (especially the first X game), best action games ever (especially the X series), megaman zero, command mission and battle network just are completely out of the original concept and some are even very bad games (especially battle network series, just another "pokemon" copy).

Castelvania: Who doesn't remember Castlevania II: dracula's curse? Damn, finishing that game is quite hard if you don't know what to do, also Castelvania I for the NES was no walk in the park either......

And at last but not least: Contra III, the alien wars, woah, impressive game, kinda short but the the fourth scene (the battle with the bykes then fight in the air) is got be the best level ever in any action game, I mean how many times have you tried to bring down an aircraft without having one of your own? and having to do it by jumping from missile to missile (IN THE AIR!!!)while still dodging bullets and firing to the aircraft? impressive, just impressive (Red falcon warriors are the bravest heroes ever, too bad that in Europe they were substituted by robots), and the music is outstanding too, also the scene 3 is very good too, I still play that game from time to time and only the max difficulty level got an ending, nice detail from Konami to make you master their game.

Also, I just remember a game that deserves a mention: Battletoads in Battlemaniacs, the game itself is short, but is VERY hard, got some impressive graphics (for it's time), it's very fun and has a lot of variety. It took me very much time for being able to bring down the dark queen in the max difficulty level, this game is very hard and the one in the NES is very difficult too.

I can't believe I forgot about link to the past! Wonderful game.

Edit: I think this thread is starting to define why the SPF rocks. It has become very obvious to me that this place loves gaming, on all levels, not just D2. Reading through this thread fills me with nostalgia about times in my life where I loved many of the games mentioned. And I think it has done the same for many others. These are games that will never go away, and we will always have. And that makes me happy.

Fun stuff, and now I'm gonna dig out some games that were previously collecting dust ;)

I second that. A real classic game.

My list (from the top of my head):
Diablo II LoD. Well I think that I've spent 2/3 of my gaming time with this game so...
Starcraft. Extremely well balanced game and can run at most CPU's. The best LAN game ever.
Transport Tycoon (Deluxe).Dunno if you heard of it but it stole much of my childhood.
Ascendancy. Don't think you've heard of this. Old, good, space colonizing game.
Zelda - A link to the past.
