OT: Favourite games of all time? :)

I've been an avid gamer since my first Atari 2600 when I was a wee lad. Nowadays I'm a console collector. I have around 1000 games in my collection and many systems - old and new.

If I had to list all of my favorite games, I'd be sitting here typing for quite a while. So, here's a short list of some of my favorites from the last 10 years or so:

Planescape: Torment - I'm a huge fan of the now-defunct pencil/paper campaign setting. I've been GMing it for years. Torment captures the atmosphere of that setting brilliantly.

Final Fantasy 8 - Yup, the one that everybody hates. I love to micromanage and thus really enjoy the Guardian Force junctioning system. Lots of fun side-quests (except the Tonberry King), interesting, nuanced characters, great monsters and a nice story. Oh, and Quistis: hot school teacher with a whip =.

Sid Meier's Civilization series - All of 'em. The strategy game for micromanagement freaks like me.

THQ series of pro-wrestling games for Nintendo/Playstation - You don't even have to like pro-wrestling; you just have to like beating the living crap out of people. My friends and I have been playing these games obsessively since WCW/NWO Revenge in the late 90s. On the weekends, we still get together to crack skulls with the latest titles.

A couple of weeks ago, I picked up the newest game - Smackdown Vs. Raw 2 for PS2 - my best friend and I played it for approximately 30 straight hours, slept for 15, then woke up and played for another 24!

Hmm, this is always hard to do. Anyway, here it goes:

1. Gran turismo (PSX)
2. Final Fantasy 8 (PSX)
3. Resident Evil 2 (PSX)
4. Final Fantasy 7 (PSX)
5. Tekken 3 (PSX)
6. Metal Gear Solid (PSX)
7. Diablo 2 (PC)
8. Quake 3: Arena (PC)
9. Crash Bandicoot: Warped (PSX)
10. Street Fighter Alpha 3 (PSX)

Well, it's so hard to do a top, but here it is. Yes, I think PSX had the best games ever!

Just to correct myself, sorry.

1) Halo 2 (XBOX)
2) Halo (XBOX)
3) Diablo II (PC)
4) Starcraft (PC)
5) Golden Eye 007 (N64)

Off the top of my head, I imagine my list is something close to that. I play games for the multiplayer and even though the quests/missions of the games listed were half fun...fighting other human opponents via online duels and battles, split screen, or linked consoles have been among my best gaming experiences.

In no particular order:

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
Ocarina of Time
ZZT
Deus Ex
Hostile Waters: Antaeus Rising
Metroid Prime
Doom ][ - No deathmatch game before or since has been so fast, IMHO. Quake 3 comes close.

Really hard to include only 5 =/

1. Madden 06 (PS2)
2. Final Fantasy Tactics (PSX)
3. NCAA Football 06 (PS2)
4. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (PS2)
5. Final Fantasy VII (PSX)
----------
Others: GTA: VC, GTA III, FF I-VI, FF VIII, FF X, GT 3-4, SSX Tricky/3, Diablo II/LoD, WCIII/tFT, Rest of the Madden/ NCAA series, NBA Live series, NBA Street series, Burnout series, Perfect Dark... etc.

Have a ton of games. Wonder why I haven't played them all. Oh that's right, Diablo 2!

I won't list Diablo 2 #1, but it sure is for me, right now.

#1) Civilization 2(So many sleepless nights.....ah the days...)
#2) Diablo 2
#3) Civilization 3(my current distraction from D2. Not as good as Civ 2, though much more difficult. Close.)
#4) Diablo
#5) Doom/Doom 2
I could probably give a list of 50, that I've played, but those are the ones I liked the best. Tough choices left off, though. Seminal games like Fallout, Ultima:Underworld, System Shock(I was tempted to include this one). Even the Eye of the Beholder games, that I really enjoyed immensely. I too played and loved Archon, back on my Commodore 64.

I will admit I've determined I really don't like RTS games(though I did finish Warcraft 1 and 2, and much of Starcraft). Too bad I bought so many. AOE and AOE 2, Dungeon Keeper, C & C, etc, etc, all gather dust. I'm wondering if I should donate them to another gamer, or try and sell them. I just don't like playing where I can't rest anytime I want. I can't give my undivided attention, many times. Hence, you don't see those on my list.

Good to see a few list a great game that sadly got so little attention when it came out: Planescape:Torment. That's one of them I own that's on my "got to play soon list".

Here comes the only list that is accurate sofar:grin:

1. Ninja Gaiden Black (X-Box) Cant get better and more difficult
2. Diablo 2 (well surprise)
3. KotoR 1 (x-Box)
4. KotoR 2 (X-Box)
5. Ninja Gaiden Original (X-box)
6. Far Cry (Way better than HL2 only reason buying half life is for CS)
7. Hitman 2 (awesome Sneak 'em up)
8. Star Craft
9. Age of Mythology
10. Dead or Alive Ultimate (X-Box)

Well that's the list so get out there and buy the games now

I'm a Mac gamer, so like Cattelya, some of the games on my list are Mac only. Some of these games won't run on OS X, though. These are in no particular order.

Escape Velocity Override -- a cool trading/exploration space game that saved my sanity more that once!

Myth: the Fallen Lords -- I actually like this whole series of excellent tactical strategy games.

Deus Ex -- one of the best RPG/action games ever made.

Combat Mission -- detailed tactical WWII combat game series.

Diablo II LOD -- I never used to list this as a favorite, but I must admit I play it more than all the other games put together. Diablo I is also one of my favorites.

Neverwinter Nights -- with the expansions and mods, it lets me play D&D as much as I want.

Nethergate -- cool shareware RPG.

Starflight II -- really old Apple space exploration/trading game.

Heroes of Might and Magic -- I like the whole series of exploration/strategy games.

Master of Orion II -- Sort of the paragon of of the old-style 4X games.
I keep an old Mac running OS 8 mainly just so I can play this game and Heroes of Might and Magic II.

Redjack -- one of the few adventure games I liked, and it's great.

Freedom Force -- I always liked superheros comic books!

Snood -- an addictive little shareware game.

Pinball (vairous games) -- I love any Mac Pinball simulation I can find. 3d Ultra Pinball, Pro Pinball, and the Littlewing pinball games.

And, finally, a few really old DOS games:
Walls of Rome
Dungeon Hack
Merchant Prince
Robosport

many of mine have been said, baldurs gate/diablo/HoMM. a few i would add:

FEAR - it's relatively new, but it's the best shooter i've ever played. usually i find shooters boring. this game just takes it to a whole new level. it was just so cool, thats the best i can describe it.

Freespace 2 - they dont make space sims anymore, and it's probably best that they dont try because this game was and still is the best space sim ever made. great story, the game was made in 2000 and the graphics still look good to me, and the game was HARD, to say the least. very challenging, very rewarding and plus, when was the last time you played a game with a joystick?

some that have me staying up late, late, late.

Diablo 2 (LOD)
Age of Empires (all versions still use them on the road a lot)
Unreal (up til 3, I just dont do much online playing)
Everquest (did so much with that one)
Elite (all the way back to Commodore 64 on that one. I even had my dad take the drive or something else when I couldnt play. Damn what a game!)

I still play others but for the most part I dont do a lot of gaming to begin with so.... But I do a lot of games when I am on the road (bout 180 days a year).

In no particular order, I'd have to say these:
  • Dungeon Master/Chaos Strikes Back (CSB was an expansion that felt more like a sequel; ignore the sequel DM2: The Legend of Skull Keep, because it blows)
  • Diablo I
  • Diablo II/LoD
  • Tetris (including variants/clones)
  • Dr. Mario
  • Gory Barbarian (not sure of the exact title, but it was an old sword-fighting game with funny animations)
  • Carrier Command
For those who care, I'll elaborate on DM. It was one of the first real-time, first-person games, and considering the technology of the day (it ran on an 8mHz machine with no hard drive, a single-sided 360K floppy, and a half meg of RAM), it was truly revolutionary. If you enjoy games with intricate puzzles, and don't require cutting-edge graphics, this is a good game to try. There are a couple free clones of it on the net (one of these is 'Return to Chaos'; I forget the name of the other) that provide most/all of the feel of the originals, plus the ability to create/edit dungeons, items, and the like.

DM/CSB have several aspects that made them really fun. First is the idea that, with the exception of your characters' stats, most of the numbers are hidden from you. There's no damage range listed for weapons. You can only determine which is better through use, and common sense, and often, it depends totally on your character (a sword might be a better weapon in the hands of character A, but due to its speed, and the fact it can also be thrown, a dagger is much better for character B). Likewise, monsters don't display immunities- you only learn this sort of stuff by trial and error.

The second cool aspect is that these games used pretty intricate puzzles. Making a map of the dungeon as you went along was pretty much a necessity, and having a compass was a good idea too (certain puzzles involved areas where your party would be spun about or teleported, without any external clue this had occurred).

The third and coolest aspect was the spell system. It involved four groups of six runes (called 'syllables' in the game, as characters supposedly incanted them), and spells were built up of a symbol from each of the first two groups, and optionally symbols from the third and fourth groups. Much of the fun of the game was in learning which syllables made up which spells.

1.- Chrono Trigger: IMPRESSIVE storyline, fun game, lots of endings, great replay value (in a RPG!), emotive game, easy battle system yet not an easy game, outstanding music, perfect, simply perfect.
Yes, how could I forget this one? It was and is a great game. [/edit]

:confused2:

Have you ever tried HL and HL2?
The HL series has, imho, a far better and more surprising storyline than FC. I admit that Farcry has great scenery and it's very cool to sneak around in it, where HL mostly sets indoors. But the story in Farcry is much more linear and predictable, where HL is sometimes scary and confusing. The thing that makes HL stand out is exactly that, the story.

My god dredd, I didn't want to mention the smackdown series because I thought people would think they're not worthy of such a list, as it'd be like mentioning an EA sports game or something, but man... me and my friends have been playing the smackdown series since shut your mouth, and that is BY FAR the game that I played most on a console (be my ps1 or ps2), with my friends or by myself.
Don't think I ever managed to play for 30 hours straight, but around 8-12 hours each day of the weekend would be very accurate.
I've been totally dominating in the series, with some very good competition from my friends tho, but even I have to admit that SvR 2006 is totally awesome in it's difficulty. No more winning legend diff matches without even looking at the monitor for me

My 5 best games:

1: Diablo 2
2: Fallout 2
3: Gabriel Knight 3
4: Soul Reaver 2
5: GTA:SA

Other:NOLF, Monkey island, Hitman 1/2, Desperados.

I just love games with good plot.

Diablo II, well obviously
Civ, pick any
Master of Orion II, best of the series
Heroes of Might and Magic II, IIRC this was the best one
Elite, spent loads and loads of hours with this one on Amiga
Baldur's Gate I, haven't had the time to start the second one

EDIT: I can't believe I forgot Nethack! It's one of the best games ever and runs on almost any machine, even on palms and phones.
