OT: Favourite games of all time? :)

Yes I know this has been asked before (and probably many times). But I haven't seen a thread on it in a while, plus there seems to be a few new people. So, update! :)

My personal top 5 would be:

1. Baldur's Gate II. To me the greatest game ever created. I have never felt so immersed in a series. Great action as well as a wonderful story and fantastic dialogue.

2. Diablo 2. The most replayable game ever. Endless builds and always the hope of finding that one item/rune. Not to mention the best forum on the net, the SPF ;)

3. Fallout 2. What a wonderful concept. A post-nuclear roleplaying game. Still the best voice acting I've ever seen. Hilarious dialogue, and many different types of characters to choose from.

4. Jagged Alliance 2. I tend to like sequels it seems.... Well In all of these cases, I loved the original as well. And JA2 is no exception. The idea of hiring different types of mercenaries to help free an island nation was just fun. All the mercs came at different prices and had great personalities. Wonderful turn-based combat.

5. Age of Empires II. And why not end the list with yet another sequel. :) AoE II has a great deal of nostalgia for me. It was my first real venture into multiplay with friends. We had some great battles and I still consider it the most balanced game of all time. So many nations and all of them had distinct advantages and disadvantages. Yet it remained balanced. A model for all rts games to come.

Now that I've blabbed on, please do tell yours! You dont have to give descriptions if you dont want to, but I always love to hear why you love the games you love!

1. Diablo II----I can't put the stupid game away.
2. Starcraft---Still play it with friends on multiplayer at home.
3. CivIII-------A game that warps time and makes me lose sleep.
4. Master of Orion2---Great game that's still on my comp.
5. Archon-----Classic game from way back.

I won't put them into order too hard imo and it's too hard for me to pick 5 as top best  .

My favourite 5 at the momment are :

Diablo 2 - Yeah i think this will be in every onese list
Half Life 1 or 2 - Best FPS game ever no contest
Black and White 1 (not tried 2) - I love this game and still play it alot really funny.
Star Wars Knight of the Old Republic - Awsome RPG game still to play KotOR 2.
Farcry - Another great FPS comes really close to beating half life 1 or 2 but half life is just better

Im assuming you ment PC games

1. Diablo II - Lord of Destruction

(...Didn't see that one coming, did you!)

There is so much I don't like about the game and yet it just gets it right in so many sectors. I certainly don't see this game getting eclipsed as my all time favorite so long as Blizzard North doesn't reassemble and make Diablo III!

My top 5:

1: Diablo II : Endless replay value, and of course it comes with this great forum.
2: Max Payne: The best storyline I've ever seen in a game. Still play it from time to time.
3: Black & White: Though the translation to Dutch was a grave mistake. The game itself was very nice to play.
4: Commandos : The first one was a very refreshing game with a great challange. Beyond the call of duty (the Add-on) was more of the same (in a good way). And the series declined with part 2 & 3 (but still fun to play)
5: In Memoriam: A very challanging game wth hard puzzles/riddles to crack. It had me hooked from start to end.

Things not on the list that I enjoyed: Diablo I, Star Wars KOTOR, C&C series, Sacred etc...

1. Final Fantasy VII - Best installment in the best series ever. I know many would disagree with that statement but I personally believe that after FFVII the series kind of lost it's way. IX was okay but VII was the best.

2. Diablo II - I don't need to tell you guys how great this one is. :prop:

3. Everquest - The game itself kind of sucks but it was the first MMO I played and I played it a lot. Won't ever play it again but there's lots of good memories there.

4. Baldurs Gate/Baldurs Gate II - These would probably rank higher but for some reason I've never had a computer that would run them properly. Lots of fun from my limited experience though.

5. Starcraft - ZERG RUSH KEKEKE!!!1

1: Max Payne 1 - playing this game is like watching a great movie. Imho, one of the best game ever.
2: Planescape Torment - A fantastic game with a fantastic in-depth storyline.
3: Diablo 1 - you all know why
4: Baldurs Gate 2 - As already told, an immense game, with a great and rich story.
5: Half-life 1. Simply great.

Off the top of my head:

Ms. Pacman
Zaxxon
Karateka
One-on-One (Dr. J vs. Larry Bird)
Conan the Barbarian
Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego
Lemmings (the original)
Warcraft I
Dune II
Lost Vikings
Moorhuhn 1 and 2
Warcraft III DotA

and of course:

Diablo 2 LOD!!!

And here I thought I'd be the first to mention Max Payne

1. Diablo II- most addicting game ever, period.
2. Soul Reaver: Legacy of Kain
3. Prince of Persia: Warrior Within
4. Max Payne I
5. Baldurs Gate II

*chuckles*

1. D2- Simply have spent the most time playing this than any other.
2. Pong- Most on here have never put a quarter in the slot to have the thrill of moving a white line on a black screen to intercept a white blob.
3. Asteroids- An advanced version of #2
4. Colonization- A Sid Meier game like the Civ series, except colonizing North America.
5. Dragon's Lair- First game I remember with moving "toon-like" images...

That should do for a start...

And you're quite right sir, MANY will disagree with you. Have you ever played FFVI,V and IV? VI for me is the best, GREAT storyline, chaotic world is immense (kind of a search yourself or go right for kefka) and still kinda hard (but not as much as V). Let me guess, FFVII was the first FF that you touched, right? Most think that FFVII is the best FF because it was their first FF (and in most cases their first RPG) so is the 1337!!!! But it's not, once you grab how to take advantage of the battle system (materia) your char are almost invincible, only the weapons represent some challenge, but is more a long battle that anything else, easy as cheese. My first FF was FFI (but I was only 6  ) and still I consider VI the best in the series, for the topic itself:

1.- Chrono Trigger: IMPRESSIVE storyline, fun game, lots of endings, great replay value (in a RPG!), emotive game, easy battle system yet not an easy game, outstanding music, perfect, simply perfect.

2.- FF VI: For all what I posted above, just the best in the series.

3.- Suikoden 2: Emotive, Excellent Battle System, GREAT plot, have you tried to get all the 108 stars by yourself? and the game is actually hard, great, just great!!

4.- Xenogears: The name says everything, if you haven't played this game you don't know what an RPG is

5.- Seiken Densetsu 3: (aka Secret of Mana 2) Good replay value, the class system is VERY good, good story but predictible, different endings, nice!

And there are others very good, like Tales of Phantasia, Star Ocean, Most Castlevania games (especially Castlevania IV), Breat of Fire 2 and 3, Grandia and obviously Diablo 2- LOD

first would have to be elite on the bbc microcomputer. its was a breakthrough in both programming and game play that hasnt been bettered since. i still play it today on a bbc emulator on this machine.
next comes diablo2, it must be on all our lists right?
i also enjoyed the tomb raider games on playstation and neverwinter nights is very absorbing too. how many is that, 4.. hmm i quess 5 would be poker or maybe gin rummy. monopoly is fun but my favourite board game is risk, i play that on this machine as well:) i quess next would be hide and seek but i havent played that for 30 years, for shame!..hmm i went over limit:)

Well it isn't on mine.

Other great games were Dune 2 and let's not forget wonderful titles such as Sviw, Alien Breed 2, Rick Dangerous etc etc...

Wonderful replies! Lots of games mentioned that I had simply forgotten about. The two that stick out the most are Half Life and Max Payne. Easily the two best fps's in my book.

Actually I started playing FF when the original was released in the US. I borrowed it from a friend and he finally had to have his mom call my mom because I wouldn't give it back. Later 2 and 3 came out which were actually IV and VI respectively. These were the best games I had ever played at the time. I remember staying up at my friends house for entire weekends playing FF2 and finally going to the moon! I mean the MOON! how cool was that? VII was the next one that I played And while I admit that it was possible to create some absurd godly unkillable characters, I still found it to be the most fun. I played VIII and found that it didn't hold my attention like the earlier ones had. Not sure why exactly because it had more content than the earlier ones but I just couldn't get into it. I later was able to play the real 2 and 3 and also V through the magic of emulators. V came close to surpassing VII on my favorite list but not quite. Later I got IX and thought it was better than VIII but I guess the FF magic was just gone for me. Admittedly I haven't played any of the FFX's but I have watched a friend play them a while and didn't really enjoy it.

My ranking of FF games goes as follows...
VII
V
IV/VI
III
I/IX
II/VIII
X(lack of experience)

So to answer your question, no, FFVII was not the first FF I ever played but after playing them all up to and including IX, VII remains my favorite. I realize that this is not a popular choice but what can I say. I really liked the visual style and progression of events. All of them are fun and have some of the greatest stories in video game history (IMO of course).

Edit:Chrono Trigger and Xenogears pwn hardcore too.

Edit2:I completely forgot about Super Mario RPG. That game was amazing also. If I had a perfect memory I could probably post a 3 page long list of games that I consider great. This thread makes me so nostalgic. :content:

Gotta love those thread.

1) Baldur's Gate 1 & 2(In its entirety): Brilliant. Awesome.Amazing. Deep storyline, good graphics and great dialogues. My all-time favorite.

2) Final Fantasy VI: An inch behind Baldur's Gate. The game offers so much! Great graphics for it's time.

3) Super Mario RPG:Legend of the Seven Stars: Stand at the same level as Final Fantasy VI. Great 3D-ish graphics and the mix of Mario Bros and Final Fantasy makes an awesome combination. Always loved it, always will.

4) Lufia II: A game that is said to rival Final Fantasy in it's time. Very player-friendly and many many puzzles; one that will keep you busy. HUGE replay value because of the Ancient Cave.

5) Diablo II: Really, I don't need to say anything.

Why just 5?

D2 of course
Parasite eve series
Resident Evil series
Silent Hill series
Chrono cross
Soul reaver: legacy of kain
Age of empires II (and xpac)
Prince of persia : WW
Max payne
Gran turismo series

...and more

Let's see. I've never been a big gamer, but when I find a game I like, I tend to get obsessive. Here is a list of games that have managed to keep me occupied long after the story has been played out. (If there is a story to begin with.) In no particular order:

Diablo II - This one is obvious.

Marathon - Before Bungie sold out to M$ and created Halo, they created Marthon which was on originaly Mac-only FPS with a great story and lots of fun ways to kill evil aliens.

Escape Velocity/EVO/EV Nova - A simple game which is part asteroids, part trading, part adventure. It was designed to allow user-created plug-ins which keeps the gameplay fun.

Space Invaders - I'm still bitter that our Atari got stolen when I was little.

Load Runner - My parents used to have to enforce breaks for me with this game because I would get all worked up over it. It was probably a good thing that it didn't work on newer computers.

I feel old now.

Hmm, this is always hard to do. Anyway, here it goes:

1. Gran turismo (PSX)
2. Final Fantasy 8 (PSX)
3. Resident Evil 2 (PSX)
4. Final Fantasy 7 (PSX)
5. Tekken 3 (PSX)
6. Metal Gear Solid (PSX)
7. Diablo 2 (PC)
8. Quake 3: Arena (PSX)
9. Crash Bandicoot: Warped (PC)
10. Street Fighter Alpha 3 (PSX)

Well, it's so hard to do a top, but here it is. Yes, I think PSX had the best games ever!
