Orange You Glad That Rune Dropped: Craft-Centric Tournament

ItsATrap is getting Orange!

Well, I'll update this post probably tomorrow with details for end of Act 5 up to Act 2 NM, but I have to set that milestone: I had to start to craft ItsATrap's gear - and she is still not fully geared at this point.

Also, she left the SP thingy (star added beside her name in the table) in order to start NM with Shadow Master maxed. Last waypoint is Lost City currently, but the Maggot's Lair hadn't been visited, neither had been killed Radament.

Pieces crafted are belt, gloves, amulet and - finally - armor. Got the jewels and the runes, but lack the PGems, and the exceptional base for the boots. Merc is naked and will have to wait to be geared, but as flawless ones start to drop for real, it should be quick enough throughout Act 2 NM.

Anyway, real things have started!

The journey
Last session saw ItsATrap defeat Baal in Normal, at clvl 44. She then went to cows then Nihl, with nothing at all noteworthy, but she ended her SP journey at clvl 45.

Afterwards, she leveled up to 49 at Pindle to max Shadow master.

Nightmare begins
She is running NM on p8 for now, except for the Countess, who coughed a Shael. Cain was then delivered, and Akara's reward was... well, better than her Normal gift, but still not amazing at all:

On the way to Andy, we started to face Fire immune elites, and so was Bone Ash. An area succeeded in keeping all of its monsters alive, but obviously Andy didn't like the fire traps:

This act ended with few noticeable runes - the Countess' Shael, an Amn and a Sol, and few flawless gems - and most of them were either diamonds or topazes -_-.

Arrival at Act 2 NM... the REAL nightmare begins
ItsATrap went for something like an hour of shopping, mostly Fara, and Charsi for the gloves. The boots are still to be found, so are the merc's armor and weapon base - but there's a real lack of pgems. One piece could have been personalized, but ItsATrap is not one of her fighter sister:

Main target for shopping was the belt... and for some reason it had been the last one found #D2Trolling. Crafting had been done along the road, with flawless gems dropping more often now (see spoiler below), when getting the needed PGems, so the act had been started somehow naked.

Thoughts
I did VERY WELL to max Shadow Master. At least for now, it's a damn powerful ally as my merc is just a naked piece of meat dying so fast that I don't even bother to resurrect him. An Offensive NM one had been hired however to help the shadow damage (...lol...), but I will probably hire an Holy Freeze one for Hell.

It's been quite a while since I've posted in here! Still not in last place yet, though! First off, I have been following the thread even if I have neglected my assassin in favor of the RFL...having to make fresh characters to run has left me with no time for other projects. Just wanted to say very nice progress to all, and belated congrats to @PhineasB for reaching guardian. Looks like a few more are well on their way there as well. Expect to see updates from me in a few weeks!

Act 2 NM completion

ItsATrap has put a foot at Kurast, and completed her own gear (see New Crafts below), however merc is still left dead for now.

She started AS at clvl55, got over all legs before finding the good one, and an Hone Sundan on the way.

Afterwards she visited Radament, and well... the trip was all about waiting for the shadow to clean the path:

Back to the Canyon, she finally found her boots base after the first fight, so it was time to complete the first crafted gear with the gems picked in AS and sewers.

Clvl 57 was hit in the last room before Duriel, after a clear of the temple, and he was taken down on p3 to gain A LOT of time - fight was boring, and in the end cost 6 blue pots.

So now it will be time to head to Travincal, and sooner than later respec to Lightning traps to be able to pass through.

Then onto the monastery where the smith was vanquished and Charsi created this fine helmet. Those resists will come in handy as we face lightning beetles in the desert:

Once the cube was retrieved it was time for some sudo-crafting.
I took 5 savage weapon rolls to get an exceptional weapon the merc would be able to use. A lochaber axe, I then had to re-roll with chippies to get a reasonable socketed version. A Nef rune and -req jewel and we were set with this:

Also took time to cube up some better Diamonds for a shield and more resists, also with a Tir for a bit of MPK:

It wasn't until I had killed the Summoner and a mob on his platform had dropped me a Tal before I could make a nice Stealth:

Trudged through all the tombs and finally headed to Duriel...It was a lengthy fight at P8 but very little danger between the merc and resummoned dire wolves to keep him occupied:

Cleared the Arachnid Lair and Spider cave, was fortunate not to have to trudge through the Great Marsh, one of my least favorite areas, and was able to go straight to Flayer Jungle for Swampy Pits and Flayer Dungeon.

Then on to one of the scarier fights so far, Stormtree, as I approached Lower Kurast. His extra fast mod made me retreat back a bit to lay some more fissure fields but ultimately we prevailed without any NDE's

Cleared Lower Kurast and stopped for this session, probably not to resume until after RFL Round 3 set is complete. So far the journey has been at a steady pace with no NDE's. Just slower advancement than I am accustomed too as I don't normally clear so much....usually re-run good xp farm areas on increasing player settings then quest at P1 for speed so this is a much more thorough journey this time. I am starting to look forward to seeing what crafts I get to make and maybe what pops up that will be good for a personalization reward. Already thinking I may use one for Insight though as I am often out of mana right now. We shall see if something more tempting comes along though.

Out into A2, still on /p1 out of sheer laziness and the desire to progress at a decent speed. Still, progress is progress, especially with an RFL going on!

Radament was found and dispatched easily, and I can say both Elding and the merc feel way sturdier with their upgraded gear. Also, the merc can actually kill things and leech properly, which is fantastic. We did however, run into our first PI/LI right away in the desert.

Hopefully not a sign of things to come, but the merc whittled him just fine so we progressed to the Far Oasis where we ran into another one before heading down into the ML to slowly plod through all the LI beetles to Coldworm.

Found a Hellslayer in the CVT. Useless, but could have been cool and SU finds are always fun to see. Fangskin was found shortly afterwards and taken out carefully

He dropped Bonehew, another cool drop in any other tournament. No worries though, I'm just happy to leave the LI beetles behind for now. Off to the jungles!

Found some time over the past few days, so Valryka will report on her progress.

We rolled Slingers and LI Thorned Hulks in the Bloody Foothills. Lots of Decoy and Slow Missiles kept progress steady. I was able to take most of the slingers out by bouncing LS off of the Thorned Hulks since they always charge out first. Then once most of those were down I'd swap over to the bow and use FA to keep the hulks frozen so they didn't beat up to much on Kasim and the Valk. I tried to keep the Rhyme switch up most of the time so I had the blocking and better D/A/E to handle the piercing spears. We did hit an immediate LI/PI boss, but we were able to pull his pack away from the slingers and brought him down quick enough with MA.

We grabbed a Goldskin in the Frigid Highlands. Also rolled Slingers here as well... We finally found our first Lem in the Frigid Highlands. For some reason this specific rune always seems to evade me. We got amp Hell Witches in Abaddon, but no dangerous boss packs to go with them so we didn't have that many issues. The Pit of Archeron had Maulers and PI Blood Lords. Typically this would have been a tough spawn but CS loves big bodied baddies. Kasim bit it once against a champ pack of Blood Lords backed up by Burning Dead Mages, but the Valk and Decoy held their ground for Valryka to easily take them all out.

Picked up a Toxic Small Charm of Blight. One of the highest poison damage small charms I've found. I'm keeping this in the stash and will bring it in if we hit any more tough LI/PI bosses.

I thought we'd finished with Slingers once we got to the Arreat Plateau but nope, they were here as well. Granted there really weren't very many of them, but still we've hit them in all three of the early outdoor areas... Picked up an eth Kraken Shell that will get rolled in the cube later. Maybe we'll get 3 sockets and can personalize a sweet Treachery/Duress for Kasim. (Update: it rolled 4os).

Frozen River rolled LI Dark Lancers, Claw Vipers, and of course Gloams... We hit a Champ Pack of gloams right away, but we hit them in a really good spot of terrain and only one at a time would come around the corner to fight us.

Anya was rescued without too many issues, we just played slow and safe and were still able to make steady progress. We got Anya after clearing maybe half the Frozen River, but I didn't want to lose our full clear status so we went back to finish the job after using the resistance scroll. We only had 2 evil urns in the Frozen River, so of course we got Gloams off both. One only had a single champion, and the other spawned a relatively tame boss pack:

Anya gifted us a mediocore spear, which promptly got sold. This was likely our last shot at improving the javelin, so looks like we're going all the way with the imbued one.

We went after Nihlathak after clearing the Glacial Trail but before leaving the caves so we could get one final personalization and use it for the last few areas of the game. We got LI Returned and LI Beetles in the Halls of Anguish. Luckily the Valk had rolled Amped (as seen as we crushed Pindle and his gang) which really sped things up since it cast relatively frequently when Valryka could keep everything frozen with FA.

Found another Riphook somewhere in the Halls. The game really wanted me to use that bow... Lost Kasim a few times; once at Nihlathak and a few more times from bugged vipers while finishing that level. I ended up just leaving him dead and going with the Valk only, which slowed us down a bit. The battle with Nihl wasn't that bad, though it did provide Valryka with her first NDE in a while when we caught a CE blast. We went down to ~200HP instantly but I had my fingers on the Full Rejuv keys since I knew this was a possibility so we mashed those and survived. I just spammed LS and then ran away while it took most of the monsters out, and then was able to circle around to take Nihl on directly while tanking the few remaining boar guys. Nihl didn't last very long once he got focused with CS, and then we could mop the rest of the room up without issue. No screenshots of this fight, it was too hectic to take the time. I finally lost my amp Valk in the last wing of the Halls of Vaught, she almost made it all the way.

I want to use my final personalization before proceeding, and right now I'm caught between two minds.
1) Make a Treachery Great Hauberk for Kasim and add a socket to Valryka's helmet to shore up her LR. This would make Kasim a beast but would leave him with just 3 LL.
2) Add a socket to our Tal's Mask and drop an Um in it for Valryka to use. This would also let us re-arrange charms and get a pretty decent boost to life.

@Norcim - Nice progress, almost there now! I would use the socket to buff your char before your merc if she's feeling a little squishy. He can die, you can't. Also, the valk should offer enough distractions to keep him alive decently as well, and to provide you protection should he kick the bucket.
 
I took the advice of @Pb_pal and decided to buff Valryka before continuing. The Tal's Mask got personalized, then socketed with our Um rune for a very tasty +30 to all resistances. This maxed everything but poison with some overstack on fire and lighning, so I swapped out some small resistance charms for some life ones. Here's how we're looking for the rest of the game, barring any charm upgrades found the rest of the way.

We had to do a pretty decent run through the Glacial Trail to get out since we had cleared it in a previous session. Didn't have any issues, but used a few TPs trying to prevent the invisible merc bug. Once we got outside we made quick progress through to the ancients, without any tough monster rolls or bosses.

The Ancients got re-rolled the first two times as we got amped immediately. My plan was to take the first non-amp roll and go for it. Our third attempt had no amp, and only one of them was LI. Valryka was able to take Korlic out by herself while Kasim and the Valk kept the Talic busy, and we put a decoy in front of Madawc and he was more than happy to just fire away at it.

Korlic went down quick, but Talic was tough because he had good lightning resistance. Eventually he went down, but he cost a few full rejuvs since I didn't want to risk losing Kasim with LI Madawc still to go. One it was just Madawc we ganged up on him, and Valryka was able to bring the bow out and get some shots in herself.

All in all it wasn't that bad of a fight. The game must have known this though, because things got serious as soon as we went into WSK 1. We hit an immediate nasty stair trap (it wasn't a temple style one where the baddies are just on top of the stairs, but as soon as we moved away from the stairs it got hairy). A bunch of LI Zealots rushed us, backed up by a HF cursed Vile Witch pack and 3 regular Heirophants. There were red stars and lightning and blizzards going off all over. Kasim and the Valk bit it while I bailed through a TP. Came back through the tp and had to go on a mad dash out of that room, but I hit an extra fast conviction pack of Invaders in the next room and Kasim and the Valk just vanished. I bailed through a TP again, then on the next return ran blind the other direction and finally ended up in a safe spot. I was able to resurrect everyone and re-group, then start inching our way back out. I found out there were actually 2 Vile Witch packs in that first room after I had slowly cleared back to it. Somehow I missed getting the second boss in a screenshot, but I did get one of them:

The rest of the level was tough. I burned almost all my saved rejuvs and probably took 15 TPs to heal and keep Kasim alive. But we made it, and we still have 6 full rejuvs in our belt as we head to WSK2. If we get the WP near the stairs to WSK3 I might mule some more in, but I'm not looking forward to a blind run through WSK2 if I don't need it.

We got Serpent Magi, Soul Killers, and Horadrim Ancients on WSK2. After level 1 this was a really nice roll, and we cleared it out really quickly. The WP and stairs were as far apart as possible, so no muling was going to happen but we were able to restock our full rejuves and have 9 available heading to WSK3.

WSK3 had Rancid Defilers, PI Hell Temptresses, Doom Knights and OKs. Check out this find from WSK3. I'll have to do some research on 4 socket runeword axes after this is over.

We cleared WSK3 pretty easily as well. And with that, we were ready to enter the Throne! We of course hit our very favorite monster, Burning Souls, in the ToD. We got a champ pack and a boss pack but it actually wasn't that bad, even though they were backed up by revivers. There just weren't that many of them on the level.

We actually spawned Wave 1 before I was ready, as there was only a boss pack of unravelers right as we entered the throne room and no other baddies. All of a sudden the fallen were running around and I was confused at first until I realized the room must have been empty. Waves 1 and 2 were easy, though we did TP out after 2 to clear the poison. Wave 3 took a few full rejuves for Kasim since they spawned with amp, but once we got 2 or 3 down it was easy. The boss wasn't LI, which helped. Wave 4 was easy; I didn't even see the boss mods before they were down.

Wave 5 wasn't too bad, but extra strong cursed Lister did take Kasim and the Valk out a few times. We would just TP out, re-group, and then pop back in and cast a new Decoy to keep a few busy. Valryka would then pick one on the edge and get off as many LS and CS strikes as possible before Kasim went down and we would repeat the process. I could typically keep him up with rejuves, but a few times he was just instantly dead before I could even hit the hotkey. Eventually we just had Lister left, and he went down quick to CS. You can see that we didn't even get pushed that far out of the throne room by them, so we held our own fairly well.

The Baal fight was easy, as most boss fights are when you have CS. He cloned himself once, but he was almost dead at that point so we just killed the clone quickly and then finished him off.

The only notable from the drop was an essence. Tyreal decided to play a joke on us and put the portal out of reach again...

I popped in for a quick BBQ because we had done a full clear up to this point and I was going to maintain it. Plus I wanted to hit level 86 because we were soooooo close after the waves and Baal fight. Cows were tough on Kasim if he got swarmed, but using good tactics and only drawing out one group at a time kept progress steady. The King went down easy, and we actually picked up a Fal for our troubles.

So thus concludes Valryka's journey. She has become my very first tournament Guardian, which I'm really happy about! We killed all monsters, did all quests (and used all quest rewards), and grabbed every waypoint. I'll put up a Guardian post in the next few days that will show all gear/stats/skills.

A huge thanks to @PhineasB for hosting such a cool tournament, and to all the participants for keeping it going. This one was a blast; I really liked the minimal focus on MF, and getting to use crafts was a nice change of pace. Good luck to the remaining players, keep the updates coming!

Nicely done @Norcim and especially that WSK1 roll! I had similar WSK experience with my now untwinked 99er Druid when he was in overburdened tourney. It’s definitely nerve wracking but oh-so-rewarding to work through one of those really nasty rolls.

Congrats on the first Guardian, and I’m glad the format worked out. Hopefully we’ll get another one active once RFL concludes!
 
Took a small break from RFL duties to move Elding along a bit. Into the jungles, a bit slower than I'd like with LI Apes and Fetishes everywhere. Sszark pushed us all the way back to the entrance, but he eventually succumbed. Back out into the trees, I'm starting to get a little sick of seeing guys like this:

Not PI, but still Stone Skin and annoying enough. At least it gives us a chance to showcase the bleeding and CB from Elding's blood equipment! Other than the merc dying a few times, it was a rather uneventful stroll through to the Flayer Dungeon (picking up our finel - useless - Ormus ring), and then up through Stormtree and into the cities. I always try to trap Sarina in a doorway, especially in Hell. It didn't quite work out this time.

But in the end she died without issue. Down into the Sewers for a quick clear and organ snatching, and then it was the Council. I had been worried about these guys for a while. They're fast, strong, and there would be lots of LIs between them and the Zealots running around.

Standard procedure of leading them out 1 or 2 at a time, and exercising lots of patience, worked out in the end. Durance 1 was littered with LI Maulers, so that was slow going. Luckily I found the stairs quickly and popped down to the second level where we encountered.... more Maulers. After all that, I never expected level 3 to take just as long as those 2, but alas we had one more LI/PI to deal with before the act was through

Dammit Bremm. Slow and steady was the name of the game (oh, and a few panicky trips back to town at low health), and after that the fight with Meph was a cakewalk. His drop was (predictably) useless for us, so it's on to Act IV!
