This MFO was epic in so many levels! A tie for the first place in A85 decided by the 6th item and two Tyrael's found! A special congratulations to LiquidClear for the win decided by the photo finish - it's going down on the history books -, to Gripphon for finding his 3rd Tyrael's and to Grape for finishing his grail by finding a Tyrael's on the MFO! I hope to see all the participants - and more - for the 2016 Winter MFO.

Congratulations to all, very epic finds there. Two Tyrael’s, wow. And LC beat both, huge congrats!!

Many thanks go to nulio for hosting the MFO and making the awesome spreadsheet which offers a very convenient way of keeping records of drops.

Originally I was not going to participate as I thought I might not have time since I’m on a visiting trip to our collaborator, but nulio claimed that was just an excuse, lol, so I signed up, and now I’m really glad I did it. Thanks again nulio.

The first 9 days were really enjoyable as I had gradual increase in scores literally everyday. Day 10 (yesterday) was miserable. I was hoping one of Pindle’s top 3 drop to increase my scores, but of course no!!!! I did grab a 14% CSD Nightwing’s in the very first run yesterday, which was a good start, then absolutely nada after that except a failed blue Dimensional Shard and a gold Glorious Axe worth mentioning, but who cares, I already had one. Overall, the drops were kind of disappointing considering I spent most of my spare time after work running Pindle with a zerker. Died 5 times, levelled from 86 (IIRC) to 91. The last death was due to falling into asleep at night. The first 4 deaths were due to unfamiliar with the playstyle, never played a zerker before (always using blizzard sorc and poison necro for MF), Gripphon just recommend zerker for items before MFO, so I respec my IK wielding barb and equipped him according to Fabian’s post. Thanks both.

I play strictly self-found, so I won’t claim any items from other entrants, although I want that Dimensional Shard so much, but whatever . In this MFO, I kept every single qualifier and eventually nailed a total of 249 qualifiers (it’s a shame that I did not use run counter in this MFO, maybe next time), 23 of them are 9.3+ pointers, 12 of them are 10.7+ pointers, with Darkforce being my highest item. ROFL! Two people with the one armor to rule them all and neither of them won! Way to go LC!

As you can see by the posted updates i had nearly no improvement over the weekend. Which was not because of a lack of running i might add.

Overall i feel like i failed to achieve my goals in this MFO. Was really aiming for Tyrael's or (more realisticly) Astreon's ward as those are the two items i'm still missing. And after second update i was hoping to break at least the 100 pts which i also didn't get.

Did run way more than i expected to. Though that may also just be because i'm used to Baals. Sorc got from about 94 1/4 to 95 1/3 despite a handful of deaths. So at least the exp was good (perhaps i should've done this with a 99-toon-to-be ).

On the upside i did get several improvements in the ethereal grail department. Regular grail is failing a bit so far, but i have yet to sort out all the qualifiers, so we'll see how much that helps.

I'll post more when i got things sorted all out (at work now), like the filled in sheet from nulio, haulpic, perfect grail improvement and #runs done.

For now congrats to the winners and many thanks to nulio for hosting (though he should've participated too ).

Just for some added context: that score puts LC at #3 all-time on the MFO score list. I haven't done a complete list, but he's definitely the only non-Tyrael's scorer in the top 6 and I think there's only one other in the top 10. It's stupid impressive and awesome.

And right after the MFO finished he logged on to Diablo 3 and carried me through some Torment 8 rifts because he's just that nice of a guy. Hail our champion! Hail the Gripslayer (on tiebreaks)!

Congrats to everyone on their finds! When people put in serious effort the MFO never fails to disappoint and this one was a doozy. Enjoy all your new toys and, again, congrats to everyone.

Congrats to everyone and Xylene on winning the Pindle category.

After sitting firmly in third I and not finding any 27.9 pointers, I wasn't hopeful in moving up a spot, but had a lucky streak of Druid hats to boost the score.. Surprised to see no 27 pointers at all in Pindle though.

I am happy with my placing, but no graillers and highest rune Gul was a bit disappointing.

I'm not looting.

I guess I'll start out with a couple of shout outs related to this MFO.

#1 @Fabian
Basically for introducing us to the Telezerker. IMO it has revolutionized the MFing game to a certain extent. His original was the template I started out with, although I have at this point made my lazy-man modifications so that I don't have to switch when I tele/hork. I had a hell of a time finding an a85 runner that I actually liked playing, and I had been avoiding the Telezerker largely due to its cookie cutterness and not having fond memories of playing him... but it turns out he was the most enjoyable a85 runner I've had. It works well enough that even I can have success in spite of my general slowness of play compared to the speed demons.

I guess for pushing the limits of efficiency and optimization in various runs. I personally don't pay all that much attention to the finer details, but I picked up various little things watching his runs and also started paying attention to things I hadn't in the past. Also, you can laugh, but I didn't have solid horking technique before watching his Trav videos... I would click on each corpse individually. Afterwards I started doing the "circular wave" technique and my clicking finger has thanked me ever since. Also, Grip is a troll troll troll troll etc. I knew you were full of it talking about how everyone should leap frog you... Tyrael's on day 1, ridiculous.

OK, I'll talk about my journey now. I probably spent about ~100 hours at the computer this MFO, but I have to qualify that it wasn't 100% focus and speed the whole time. I did a lot of IRC chatting, checking sports scores online, browsing through music videos on YouTube, etc. Things actually started off pretty slow for me; I think as late as Sunday evening I had Halaberd's Reign as my top qualifier and still had 7.9's in my top 5. I believe it was on Monday (pre-update) that I found Death's Web and enough 9.3's to fill out the top 5. There was also a Jah rune around this time. My teammate Zylo had also found a D-Web before the first update, so I felt we were in pretty good position. Oh, and I had another Jah and an Ohm drop as well.

Shortly after sending in the first update, I found Darkforce #1. At this point I started to actually think "hey, I'm not doing too badly. Maybe I have a shot!" What would happen Thursday morning reinforced that feeling immensely.

Continuing my massive time investment, I ran across another bit of luck, with Mang's dropping. I immediately ran to irc, because when you find something you want to brag about it, and had the following exchange with Fabian: (or something like it)

Me: Gold Archon Staff! /o/
Fabian: Nice.
Me: (3 minutes after first message) I just found ANOTHER archon staff the very next run
Fabian: wait. what?

After bragging to Fabian about the first one and muling items off my character, at the end of the very next run another gold archon staff dropped. Back-to-back 27 pointers... insanely lucky. I almost felt bad, and had a little hint of "would I even believe this if someone else claimed it happened?" But it did happen. At this point I had gotten more motivation to push hard and try to win. I'm not really a competitive person, but I didn't want to put this streak of luck to waste. I added a Ravenlore to my top 5 before sending in the 2nd update.

The second update had me worried. To be honest, I expected the post to say something about #1 being out in front, considering I had 117 points which felt pretty good to me. Of course with #1 and #2 being so close, I basically felt as though it confirmed that Grip was sandbagging all over IRC, talking about how he had to be way behind and that sort of thing. I also figured Tyrael's was in the mix, because it seemed more reasonable than someone having 3x 27 pointers like me. If he had Tyrael's, his remaining 4 would be easier to improve than mine. Therefore, motivation increased again.

Almost immediately after reading the second update, Darkforce #2 dropped (ethereal, if you're interested). At this point I could only improve my score by finding another 27 pointer or Tyrael's; a tall order, but I had the weekend to give it my all.

Saturday I played a lot, no improvements. I was ready for another miracle drop on Sunday... but I fell asleep. Multiple times. I wasn't feeling great and kept falling asleep, mitigating my runs. I mean, I still ran what most people would consider a lot on Sunday, but it was my least active day of the week.

So midnight came, the MFO was over, and anxiety set in a little bit. Grip had done something like 400 runs a day, and my 4.7 point improvement didn't feel very significant and I started to think that if we were close to neck-and-neck that he probably had upgraded his top 5 more than I had. But, it turns out we tied. I "only" had 23 9.3 point or above qualifiers, significantly less than Grip, so I figured my item depth wouldn't measure up... but my 14 point finds won me the tiebreaker, go figure. Fun fact: Upon finding D-web, my first thought was "Man, I wish it was Astreon's. Then it'd be a grailer!" If my wish had come true, I would've lost due to the .1 point difference.

I set a number of different goals coming into the MFO, reasoning that it would be easier to feel good afterwards if I accomplished at least one of them.

1. Win. Obviously, though I felt it might be a fairly long shot. I had never performed well in a85 before.
2. Find my 3 grailers. Astreon's, Tyrael's, and Knell Striker (and Zod if you count runes). The first 2 still elude me, but I did manage to find the TC3 scepter.
3. Have an epic rune haul and an epic haul pic. I found 2 Jahs, so that was probably the best rune finding I've had in an MF competition. The volume didn't measure up to epic rune hauls of the past like Fabian and company. And I guess my haul pic is pretty decent (below) but it doesn't pop out. Maybe it needs a Tyrael's Might in the middle?

Happy Accidents

First off, thanks to Zylo for teaming up. I was kind of disheartened when there wasn't any enthusiasm for teams. Part of the fun of the MFO is sharing your finds with your teammates, otherwise it's just like you're keeping this big secret for 10 days. We both had D-Webs early on and both gave it a significant time investment. Wire-to-wire victory. Go Happy Accidents!

Thanks to @nulio for hosting this and getting everything together. I doubt it would've happened if he didn't get the ball rolling. Also... thanks to everyone who played. Sure, the numbers aren't quite as high as they have been in the past, but we had plenty of new faces show up and put up good efforts. With some of the older players not being interested anymore, the influx of new people is needed. Old or new, it takes people to make things interesting and I felt like everyone did a great job of showing up in the thread, running, etc. MFOs have been getting farther and farther apart, so hopefully this will kick start some new interest going forward.

I didn't realize quite how much I was outclassed here, amazing finds!

I ran something around 25 hours I think. I did reach my goal of leveling to 90, and actually reached 91. I started at 80.

I had a lot of fun, and this gives me motivation to build a much better character for the next mfo.

Many many thanks belongs to teh nulio too, for hosting, supervising, and most importantly keeping up the traditions! That leads also me to thank all the participants!! Without you, this would be impossible. Every single one of you equally important for the competition. I will be sure to join the up coming MFOs, if I can run even just a little bit.

As for my own journey, it kind of started nicely with finding 3 x 9.3 items right away with only little running. Found a few more of those during the weekday evenings, when I could play a hour or few. I didn't use run counter all the time, but my estimation is that it was about ~17 hours in when that golden Sacred Armor dropped, it was Thursday evening about 1,5 hours before sending the second update.

That was a turn point where from I started to run more and tried to get rid of my 9.3 pointers in top 5. These few days I found a lot less haul pic items over time, but luckily I succeeded with that goal. I expected to finish third with these points, and it seems I was right

Oh and yes, as nulio mentioned. With finding Tyrael's I've now completed my Grail. It took little under three years total, and this last year it has been just Tyrael's missing. Super happy about finding it, as it has been the biggest goal for me in D2 along with getting that 99 level character.

Great work everyone, and congrats to all of the winners. RL kept me pretty busy, but I still managed to put in around 55 hours, and I'm quite pleased with my results. My main goal was to find a grailer, and with only: Mang's, Fathom, Dweb, and Tyrael's, I didn't want to get my hopes up too much. Luckily on day 2 I found a Dweb, and completed that goal. Grail -3 woot woot.

Talking to LiquidClear on IRC, and catching the occasional stream really helped to motivate me. Quite the player, quite the teammate that guy.

First of all, this turned out to be amazing MFO, by far best one I played in. Tie for the winner, awesome stuff!

Huge congratz to LiquidClear, defeating 2 Tyrael's with no Tyrael's is really big accomplishment. Also that is very nice writeup and pictures. Happy Accidents ftw.
Congratz Grape on Tyrael's grailer . Areas results are overall very strong in the end thanks to big efforts from other players. Congratz Xylene on your first MFO, and win as well! Pindle didn't want to drop better stuff it seems, too bad. Nice playing everyone from both categories.

Now, about my MFO. Where to start. Ah yes, goals etc. Pre MFO-goal was to put nice amount of running into MFO (30 hours minimum, 40 hours probable), to hope for a miracle perfect Griffon's and to find decent rare boots for PvP. In the end I haven't found a single unique Griffon, found decent rare boots and have played much much more than I thought I would, pushing myself near the limits from time to time. I'm am very satisfied with how things turned out (no s... Sherlock). I played with my pitzerker I won last MFO with. First score update was no surprise to me, but second got me excited. Oh, someone else found Tyrael's and I am possibly not in the lead anymore? That is awesome. Now I have inspiration to run moar!

Day 1 of MFO
Started the running immediately after midnight until past 2 am to complete 130 runs before sleeping. I really wanted to play and it felt good to finally hit the Pit after waiting for so long.
Running was nice and I was really inspired. First happy accident happened after ~6 hours of playing time. Unique Sacred Armor dropped. My heart started to pound loudly. At first I was sure it is just Templar's (I mean, what are the odds for something else?!). But... what if? I went to Gomule immediately to see what I found. Tyrael's. I mean, WTF! Last MFO found Tyrael's at first day, and now AGAIN? I don't even even... It's like I cannot properly start MFO without first day Tyrael's anymore. As much as it was incredibly exciting to find another one, it also meant 1 thing: no slacking, this MFO we go for the kill. Goal increased from 40 hours minimum to try to hit at least 50. I mean, you gotta use that kind of luck to your advantage, right?

Got some other nice things first day of MFO. First day completed 600 pitruns and found caduceus set, legendary mallet (Schaefer's), berserker axe, sacred armor (Tyrael's), thunder maul, sky spirit, legend spike, colossus blade for a total of 8 haulpic items.

Day 2 of MFO
New big excitement today. At the same place I found Tyrael's, now Fathom dropped. Awesome, I'm having incredible start to MFO! Nothing else happened, it was a normal playing MFO day.

At second day I completed 400 runs to get to a total of 1000 and found giant thresher, dimensional shard and blood spirit for a total of 3 haulpic items.

Day 3 of MFO
Nothing happened during this day. Only drop was Succubus Skull, but apart of that... it was a waste of time.

Third day I did 250 runs to get to 1250 total and found only succubus skull, 1 haulpic item.

Day 4 of MFO
Boring boring boring day of nothing. Found only Thunder Maul and have been hitting the wall otherwise.

I did 350 runs to get to 1600 total and found thunder maul, 1 haulpic item.

Day 5 of MFO
Another big excitement day. Awesome day. Death's Web dropped in Pit 2 from a champion pack during morning. Now we talk about crazy score in here! Other than that, it was highly crowded haulpic items day where nothing quality dropped, but quantity was big. Also, from this day further I waited up until last day to find score improvement.

I did 320 runs to get to 1920 total and found unearthed wand, mighty scepter, hydra bow, ogre gauntlets, winged harpoon and war pike, total of 6 haulpic items.

Day 6 of MFO
Another incredibly boring day with nothing all along. Interesting thing is, plan was to do 350 runs and found Caduceus set at literally 350th run. Ok, at least 1 was here, better anything than nothing.

I did 350 runs to get to total of 2270 runs, found caduceus set, 1 haulpic item.

Day 7 of MFO
Not a bad day overall. Did 380 runs to get to 2650 total and found war pike, war pike, hydra bow, ogre gauntlets and giant thresher, total of 5 haulpic items.

Day 8 of MFO
Another typical day of me doing 365 runs to get to 3015 total and found myrmidon greaves, hydra bow and giant thresher, total of 3 haulpic items.

Day 9 of MFO
Weekend. I'm at 3015 runs now. Last update got me exciting since someone actually threatened my position and it was possible I don't even lead anymore. That gave me nice inspirational boost to run whenever I was free, and I had other things to do also. Now I asked myself how many runs I should aim toward the end of MFO, is it 3.7k or 4k? Decided to see how much time I will do today and will decide for tomorrow's goal.

Well, I was more busy than I thought since mister Frozzzen got me out in the city to waste my precious MFO time, but still through the night I managed to get to 3403 runs total before deciding it is enough. But it was ok day overall. Found total of 4 haulpic items: corona, legend spike, conqueror crown and glorious axe

Day 10 of MFO
Final day of MFO. It is now or never. Time to hit 4k runs today. I basically ran whole day with short pauses for stretching. I needed to give few hours of math instructions today, but they cancelled. Too bad for the money, too good for MFO. Ok, time to run whole day. And I did. Basically, from the day 5 I hunted that final, basically ANY score upgrade that will get me over the 120 points limit. Oh, what a relief it was to find that Ravenlore. It was like burden fell from my heart. 122.1 points score. Great. Now I can relax and run for the rest of the day hoping to get another 27+ pointer to beat score of my last MFO. I didn't care will I win or lose, my goal for MFO was done and I was very happy and relaxed.
But that changed when I realized that with 4k runs I wont have nice amount of 65 hours. Oh well, time to do more running, agreed. So I ran literally up to 7 minutes before the midnight. And then irc crowd convinced me MF= lasts still 6 minutes and I did another 3 runs for lulz. Ok, done. MFO over!

Last day I did total of 640 runs and found conqueror crown, sky spirit, war pike, giant thresher and mighty scepter, total of 5 haulpic items.

Notable finds and items:
During MFO I kept track of certain rare items that dropped. I counted total of 12 Sacred Armors, 3 Archon Staves, 3 Caduceuses and 5 Unearthed Wands. I've seen my map has certain trends of dropping some items more than the others, but could be only a rng thing. For example, amount of Diadems and Sacred Armors dropped much more frequent than the rest 10.7 pointers, especially true for Diadems which dropped at insane rate. It is like a miracle I found no Griffon's lol. Also I saw considerably higher number of Unearthed Wands than other 27 pointers. One day Hydra Bows dropped like crazy, and other day saw Berserker Axes. Well, rng thingie etc.

What is crazy unbelievable is that I found only 2 Sacred Armors in last two MFO's, and both are Tyrael's. Its like Templar's doesn't want to drop to me. Insane luck is insane, what else can I say about that.

During MFO I picked up Rals, Sols, rare rings, rare boots, grand and small charms, Pul+ runes, rare circlets, all jewels, 9.3+ pointer and useful items. From notable finds, there are some nice ones, but most are bad. Not a single good charm, again. Why do I even bother picking them up etc...

Final words

This turned out to be by far best MFO I played in. I am very happy how things turned out, even though during MFO I complained how poorly I farm. Well, MFO is not for farming at the first place, not my kind of farming at least. Since I am close to finishing college and will probably find a job afterwards, this could be the last serious MFO I participated in. I simply lost the fire and will to play MFO's since my priorities in game go in other direction. I simply have no affinity toward MF tournaments anymore in general. But it was always fun to play MFO to me nevertheless, at least to keep tradition alive. So this could probably be a good point to retire from MFO's as serious contender and will rather enjoy the show in the future, which I already announced on irc. Or participate as a random player who possibly won't have much time to hit the serious running anymore. We shall see. As for now, thanks to @nulio for hosting this awesome MFO and other players at doing their best. It was really great to play with ya all. Also again congratz to LiquidClear for beating me at 100% of my power on penalties, all hail the new god! ^^

I didn't spend a lot of time checking for stats when moving items to stash. Only thing that immediately caught my eye is that The Grandfather has a perfect roll (250ED). There might be some others, but at least it's not one of those I remember the stats of/or is useful in general.

Best runes were Gul and two Ists. 10 TC3 sets/uniques. Far too much to my taste.

Barbarians are great when it comes to competitions like MFO, but I think I'll still do all my casual MFing with Javazon (or try out Poison Nec etc.), which do find less uniques over time but more runes, charms, jewels etc because of higher player settings.

Secondly, I mentioned I found rare boots for PvP and didn't show them in hurry. I'll edit them to the post above. They are not THAT special for PvP, but they do offer nice stack I want in some situations. Too bad about to me useless MF mod, but otherwise very GG boots.

I had a haul pic of exactly five items, but at least I found a WF! My zon can now be (more) complete. Still need a Fortitude. I found 3 runes above Lum: Ko, Lem, and Cham. So I feel I can join Gripphs greatness in a weird way, my last Cham came from the 2014 mfo. I have 3 Chams in my stash. 0 Bers and Los. Every time I saw an Io I crapped my pants (the wife was not happy with me, I play in the bed next to her) and I wanted every Ith to be an Ist.

I did 12 hours of p7 pit running, 8.5 hours of p3 pit running (both with a poison necro), and 6 hours of p1 AT running with a sorc. So in terms of time per good item, it was pretty bad. In times of time per rune, it was very bad. But I had fun
