The rules

1) You do not talk about your role or any other relevant information concerning the game outside this thread.

2) Do not post during the night phase. Any post within a few minutes after the end of the day will be ignored. Any post blatantly made after the end of the day phase, will result in a mod kill of the poster.

3) Do not edit your posts. Any noticeable edit will result in a mod kill.

4) Only those roles expressly allowed to communicate privately with each other at night are allowed to.

5) Once you're dead, stay that way. Dead people tell no tales, or in this case, dead people make no posts. Suck up your death and keep watching and rooting for your team. There's always the next round.

6) Every player gets one lynch vote during the day. Votes and unvotes need to be bolded to count. Use whatever nickname you like as long as it is clear who you’re voting for. Capitalization doesn’t matter.

7) The required number of votes to lock a lynch for the day is equal to one half the remaining number of people alive (rounded up) plus 1. Once someone reaches this number of votes, they will be lynched no matter what; however, the day will still continue to its scheduled conclusion. Half rounded up equals a lynch, but no lock, so the person to be lynched has until the day’s end to persuade the town otherwise.

8) Don't flame in the thread. If you have a problem with anything in the thread, please PM me and I'll do my best to handle it.

9) You can post any information from your role PM in the thread. Be it true or made up. That includes answers to questions you asked me. However you cannot fake any words said to you in a conversation via PM. Roles can be edited all you want, but not answers to questions you posed me.

10) Day lasts 48 hours and night lasts 24 hours.

11) You will get mod killed if you are inactive (at least several contributive post per day phase).

12) If you are (temp) banned, you will also be mod killed.

13) Read the rules and your role PM once more. Have Fun! Good luck! May the best team win.

Town:
You win when once all the mafia are dead
Mafia: You win once you outnumber or equal the town's numbers

There are no win conditions in the initial role PM's. If you don't get a second PM stating that you're mafia you are town. This will be clear once the game is underway.

Norman Johnson.

You are Norman Johnson. You’ve been called on this mission as a psychologist to keep an eye on the rest of the team. The other scientists don’t share your concern that having a psychologist in a deep underwater habitat is important. You are arguably the most level-headed of the group, though even you exhibit moments of irrationality.

Currently you have no abilities other than your calmness.

Harry Adams

You are Harry Adams. You’re on this mission because you’re a young and intelligent mathematician. You are likely going to be the most important person on this expedition. However, you’re also very arrogant, unsympathetic, disdainful, and often uncooperative with the others. While very secure intellectually, you tend to be lacking emotionally due to isolation.

Currently you have no abilities other than your rationale.

Theodore Fielding

You are Ted Fielding. You’re the good-natured and enthusiastic astrophysicist of the group. Despite your good intentions your often annoyingly enthusiasm inhibits your relationship with the others. Your drive to find something that will make you famous tends to come off pretentious and opportunistic.

Currently you have no abilities other than your good will.

Elizabeth Halpern

You are Beth Halpern. You’re both gentle and caring while at the same time fierce, combative, and confrontational. As the biologist and only female of the group you often see yourself dominated by the male scientists, though some of these times only in your head. This leads to you being the most out of touch with your emotions.

Currently you have no abilities other than your gentleness.

Mafia role PM’s

Mafia role, Harry

You’re curiosity and intelligence made you the first one to have found a way to enter the Sphere. Unfortunately you don’t remember anything when you woke up back inside your bed with a raging headache. However you are aware that something has changed inside of you. One side of you is no longer loyal to this expedition and has joined the ranks of the mafia.

Every night, including this night, you can make something bad happen to someone.

Mafia role, Ted

Obsessed that Harry found something in the Sphere that he isn’t telling you, you finally found the way inside the Sphere too and learned of its secrets to become famous. However after coming back out you understand why Harry kept quiet. You better seek him out to discuss what to do next to sabotage this expedition.

Every night, including this night, you can make something bad happen to someone.

Mafia role, Beth

Your self delusions that you’re being ignored and that the men have been scheming against you have finally taken the upper hand. You’re convinced that going inside the Sphere and learning its secrets will make them respect you again. At first the power felt great and all-powerful. But soon you got scared with dire repercussions. In your shame Harry and Ted found you and helped you control your powers to their best end.

Every night, including this night, you can make something bad happen to someone.

Mafia role, Norman

At first you thought you were all imagining it, but now you’re convinced there’s something different inside all of the others. You know it all started when Harry entered the Sphere, but some of the things that happened cannot be explained by just that one fact. What if the others entered the Sphere without you knowing it? You pride yourself on reading people’s intentions; however this underwater habitat has to be clouding your judgement. The only way to find out is to enter the Sphere yourself, which when you finally put your mind to, was easier than you thought.

It all makes sense now! We cannot leave this place alive. It’s all over. You seek out the rest of the group.

Every night, including this night, you can make something bad happen to someone.

Ability role PM’s

Tracker Role

You feel a profound change in yourself after coming out of the Sphere. The Sphere was right. Imagination has been our greatest gift, but it could also be our downfall here. Or are we already too late? Are we destined to contain this great and terrible gift as Harry seems to think? Some part of you can’t believe that. You have to find the people blocking your way back to the surface.

Tonight and tonight only you can track one person and find out who that person was projecting their manifestations on.

Watcher Role

You can’t believe the extent of the power the Sphere holds. Not to mention the owners that built it and allowed it to be captured. This will surely make you one of the most famous astrophysicists, no person, on earth. But these terrible things going on could jeopardize your trip to the surface. Better keep an eye on them and see what they’re doing.

Tonight and tonight only you can watch one person and find out if anyone’s manifestations come and visit them.

Doctor Role

Finally you feel empowered! No more will you have to bow down to the pressure of the others. You’re just as smart as them and just as capable. But there are things going on that you can’t control. Maybe being the alpha female will be your own downfall and cause you to give in to dark thoughts. As long as you stick to what you know and are you might live long enough to make it back up.

Tonight and tonight only you can save one person from a deadly manifestation.

Blocker Role

You always knew you would be the first to unlock the Sphere’s secrets. You’re by far the smartest guy in the group. Norman is only here to analyze us smarter people. Beth thinks muscle is power; she won’t know how to handle real power. Ted is just a small child, too nice, too naïve. Nonetheless this power could make any of them rival me as long as we can’t control it. They have to be stopped; this power can never leave this place.

Tonight and tonight only you can target one person and make sure that none of their manifestations will come out that night.

Thoughts

First of all I had a lot of fun writing the stories so thank you very much for the kind and encouraging words about them that I got from almost every one of you. I built this game around the stories so there were always going to be issues with them regarding what they give away and whether it’s unfair for one particular side. In the end they gave up quite a bit of information from the abilities, but without giving direct results from the abilities I felt that the stories could be used to distort the results of them.

The idea was to assign everyone one of the four major characters and not divide them equally so there would remain some doubt over the claims. It was a tough decision whether to include one mafia from every character or not, but decided to do so anyway for balance issues. Lynching every player from one character group just because you think there’s mafia in there stops scum hunting to a certain point. Including one extra Harry (also randomly picked) still allowed for the option of having multiple mafias per character or even none if people thought that way.

I wanted this to be an open game, but still allow room to false claim. The abilities rotated randomly among everyone after everyone got them at least once. This allowed for the mafia to predict where the ability would end up at the end of the first rotation so they could kill the ability. This, of course, was possible just like in any other game. Kill a power role in the night and that role dies. After that the ability rotated randomly among town and mafia.
The abilities were relatively weak throughout the game to compensate for the information from the stories. I think they complemented each other pretty good.

The stories’ interpretation was always going to be a bit difficult. I started out more complex because I thought it would introduce a certain wifom which could be exploited by anyone with the best explanation about the story. Especially at the beginning with more people alive from every character it could be used either way. Later on they got a bit more specific because they were being used a lot and if you base your lynch target purely on the story it should at least be interpreted correctly.

In the end I think the balance was fine, despite a few complaints. Most of the mafia were caught by scum hunting and not by process of elimination or from the stories. Even at the very end there was no guaranteed lynch target.

A free round of advice to all participants; I cannot stress enough how everything, except the individual actions of the mafia and town, have been generated randomly. Do not develop theories and suspicions on patterns. Do not try and outguess the mod.

Secondly, prepare to receive PM’s during any night phase and be ready to act on them within that night phase. Keep your inbox open and do check in at least once every night no matter your role or alignment.

The stories will be important and will give the town information about what happened that night. As I said in the sign up thread the mechanics will be slightly different than normal.

“Okay now that you’ve all arrived we can start this briefing.†Capt. Barnes started.
“Approximately three days ago we found a structure a 1000 feet below the surface. We have now found an aerodynamic fin the size of a football field and a wingspan larger than anything we’ve ever seen. It’s buried under about 8 yards of coral which means it’s been there for 288 years. And the kicker is; something is still humming down there.â€

“We think there’s an unknown life form on the spacecraft which is why you’re all going down there. You’re the human contact team consisting of a biochemist, Beth, a mathematician Harry, an astrophysicist, Ted, and led by a psychologist, Norman.â€
-“So that’s what the little green men are saying nowadays? Take me to your therapist?†Harry said jokingly.
“The contact team must be prepared for severe psychological impact. Stress reaction when confronted by unknown life form has not been sufficiently studied and cannot be entirely predicted in advance. Most likely consequence of contact is: absolute terror. You’re leaving in twelve hours for the underwater habitat that the navy set up. It’ll be your home for the duration.â€

The Deep

“Alright people let’s gather up.†Norman said.
“We’re all a bit uneasy down here and the prospect of meeting an alien isn’t exactly calming, but we’re all scientists and know what needs to be done.â€
“I’m sorry Norman, but you’re just here to keep an eye on us real scientists.†Ted asserted.
“Yes, well. Let’s hope it’ll stay to that and I won’t have to intervene. Anyway we’re scheduled to explore the craft in 24 hours once the navy robot is ready with the door. Let’s relax and make ourselves at home here. Anyone a particular good cook by chance?â€

I think we need to analyise these stproies every day, also we shouldnt rule out roles that have never been heard of. Maybe sath has invented a role for a biochemist?? who knows.

Minor point of correction there.

Psychiatrists are actually licensed medical doctors with a medical degree and additional specializations, while a psychologist has a Ph.D. usually in psychology and take a state required exam. Quite a bit of a difference as one is technically a doctor while the other isn't, that may be important at some point potentially... perhaps?

I'm too occupied by the MFO. Don't really have much to add, though. I agree that discussion of the story is very important, but regular scum-hunting hopefully applies.

I guess one thing that might be important to figure out is whether or not these apparent protagonists are actually town or not. I'm nto sure if we can figure all of that out with any ease, though. Also, what the other players in the story might be. Because we don't really have much of a theme to go off of, it seems like mafia may have an easy time making things up (or not?).

I wonder how much more informed they are of the plot and characters involved.
