To my knowledge, sick days in the US means that the employer will tolerate a certain amount of days at which you are sick. Some employers will pay wages for them, some won't. Am I correct?
There is nothing like that here in Germany. It would be regarded as "sittenwidrig" (in a juristic sense) which translates to "against good morals". If you are ill, you are ill, no matter how many weeks it takes and you cannot be fired for that, as long as it won't prevent you from doing your duties indefinitely. You receive full wages from the insurance for up to 6 weeks (a smaller amount thereafter) and when you are fine and then sick again, it's starting from anew. There's a certain amount of mooches who abuse it, of course, but not to a serious extent.
I heard a story of a German who got a job offer in the US, an engineer or something like that. The payment was pretty good, but when he heard that he will have some amount of sick days, he had to ask what they meant with that. They explained it to him and after a while of gasping with an open mouth, he laughed and left the interview.

It gets even better. The vast majority of employees enjoy "at will employment". That means that they can be shitcanned for any reason at any time. If you are sick or *pregnant, you can kiss you employment goodbye and with it your health care insurance.
*Yes, I know, they are not supposed to fire a pregnant woman, but there are work-arounds and the employer takes full advantage of them.
