@queenEm - Correct she has access to all skills and it is not limited by tournament rules as she is uncontrollable as to what she utilizes offensively and defensively.
@queenEm - Correct she has access to all skills and it is not limited by tournament rules as she is uncontrollable as to what she utilizes offensively and defensively.
In short, yes. She uses whatever she wants. This can be good (helps with immunities, high HP monsters etc), it can also be bad (MB converting monsters you don't want converted, and having then un-convert at terrible times).queenEm said:So the master will use Mind blast even though I don't have any points in it? Meaning I will in theory be able to use the unallowed skills through her?
Honestly, in your shoes, I would go with the Master. As Southpaw said, with your very limited skill selection, basically all the Warrior would be doing is overriding your Sentinels (they have the standard trap limit of 5) and MB. While the Master will be more unpredictable, you should be back out of the action and be able to correct for her slip-ups.
One other minor thing to consider about the Master is that she will (although rarely) cast her own CoS. If this is done at a bad time, it could lead to a game crash, so you might not want to take her with you to the Ancients, or the other tender spots. Of course, in these situations you can just use the Warrior instead.
@Pb_pal - Sorry, I just realized I never answered your question about utilizing Conversion. Well I was on the fence at first, but now that I am at that level I think I will put a point or two into the skill just to have some extra bodies to soak up the shots. Debating whether or not to use a Thorns mercenary once I hit that point because of the 1-2 delay that converted monsters hang onto your thorns aura and can kill you or your high damage mercenary in a heartbeat if your not careful.Pb_pal said:@Lord Molybdenum - Great start, and awesome intro post for Passive!
@Southpaw8668 - Are you planning on using conversion at all? I've never personally tried it, but I know others have had good success with it.
I'm going to update the table quickly to get Passive and Isen's new starts in there. Good luck everyone!

@queenEm So sorry to hear of the Deeds. It's very interesting to learn of the assassin skills as you build your new one - I rarely play that class for some reason.
Finally have had some time to play a bit.
Fine_Whatever has gone through the desert sands and is hanging out with her reluctant sidekick Leharas at the Lost City waypoint. Her bad luck with gems has turned around and she's got lots of flawed topaz just needing another 3os breast plate. Something in Act 1 (I forget who) dropped a Felloak Club so she has nice lightning resist and isn't in any real danger.
Now at L25, she has 8 points each in Warmth and Enchant. Hasn't put any of the prereqs to T-storm yet but when Enchant is at a respectable level she will get set up.
Leharas pokes at stuff with his Dimoak's Hew (can't remember who dropped that either - the perils of starting a character and not keeping progress notes for the updates) and all the monsters are falling pretty quickly.
Sorry this isn't a very exciting update - next one will be more entertaining for you! I'll keep notes and take screenshots.

Isen and Kasim ventured further into the frozen land and were happy to utilize the energetic aid of the barbarian warriors along the way. With the added cleansing and blessed aim they were a force to be reckoned with.
Once Isen found the first Amn rune he assembled a Edge hunter's bow to provide the pair with another beneficial aura of Thorns. It worked wonderfully against the hard hitting beasts in the frozen lands and he could apply poison, cold and PMH all at once from a safe distance. Conversion was learned and often used when multiple hard hitting monsters started to surround Kasim. It is an amazing thing having these hard hitting Frenzytaurs on your side duking it out.
The Ancients were taken at /p8 to see the pairs' damage and survivability potential and they definitely faired well. Korlic was taken down first, then the double thrower and lastly Talic. Isen pumped a few arrows in each to apply the PMH and then weapons switched and started opening wounds with his Steel flail and Swordback Hold setup. What a bloody mess!!!
The healing potential of Isen's Holy Bolts are awesome now that they are almost maxed and they receive an added bonus from Heal as well. Here Isen is blasting Kasim with bolts as he is taking heavies from a pack of Witches in the Throne of Destruction.
On the opposite side of the spectrum Isen displays the damaging potential of his Holy power to Achmel the Cursed and his defiled crew. Isen safely dropped every one of the Greater Mummies on his own as Kasim occupied his time with the skeleton mages.
Baal was also taken down on /p8 with a couple trips to town to banish his clone and appendages. PMH, poison, and OW were once again applied to drop the big boss in a reasonable amount of time.
As they were venturing toward Nith, Pindleskin dropped a base Partizan, which was socketed with the Larzuk quest and made into an Insight with a pretty sweet roll. Kasim will be gladly putting this to work as we start back down to take out Nith and afterwards the King of steers.

Sounds like you're having a fun time with that big southpaw. I played a priest up to Act 5 NM before he was killed in Nilly garden, ironic yes, but I was so happy to get to a place with nothing but undead I got careless. Good luck and don't get overconfident in confined areas as priests don't have the crowd controls / damage.
@bladejj - yes indeed, I took a much safer approach after I was surrounded in a dark corner of one of those desecrated temples by a large swarm of champion bats in The City of the Damned and almost became another chained, fallen hero there. At that time my DPS was horrible and ended up drinking most of my big juvies before they were all exterminated. Thorns really helps with those chargers too, as they practically kill themselves every time they connect with their big hits. [emoji2]
@Southpaw8668 - Congrats on the Destroyer! Glad to see this build is working well so far, best of luck with cows, and then in NM.
Let's get a table update in here, good progress everyone!

So actII normal is finished without any excitement. All done at p8 and with no finds to talk about... I gambled a decent scissors katar for her and a poleaxe for the merc.
I did come across the Cloak of shadows bug, causing the game to crash. Due to this there might be some area that was done twice but I tried to get back as quick as possible. Is it CoS alone that causes this? I googled and it seems it has something to do with stationary objects? Can I use the shadow warrior and just not have CoS on right click? When to use and and when to not?
PassiveQueen, assassin, lvl 28, Kurast Docks normal
It's due to Cos, yes. I'm sure someone has a more comprehensive list/reasons why it happens, but here is a list of areas/objects I know CoS is prone to crashing the game:
- Mummy Sarcophagi (I would imagine this is what triggered it for you?)
- Trapped Souls (the attackable ones on pillars in A4)
- The Arreat Summit (Ancients)
That's all I can remember off the top of my head. With the first 2, running away a few screens before the CoS timer runs out often can keep the game from crashing, so keep that in mind if you accidentally trigger it near those objects. But as you mentioned, your Shadow Master trick will work too, as she only uses the skills you have on active keys.
Good luck in Act 3!
Quick update, reached act IV now in normal. Still nothing to report when it comes to finds but I am thinking a lot about the skill selection. This is my idea:
Max Fade, Venom and Shadow Master. After that I am not sure since I have never played an assassin before. Will have to read up on some builds.
PassiveQueen, lvl 32, Pandemonium Foretrss
Great job queenEm! Might I suggest looking at Blade Sentinel?
Here is an untwinked Matriarch that used it as her main skill. There is also a Guardian BS-sin, although heavily twinked. Either way, worth the read.
If you don't want to go that route I suppose you could invest more into Mind Blast, or even CoS (although I'd rather a higher slvl MB), and become a crowd control specialist for your merc and shadow. You could even plink away with venomous arrows while you're at it. Don't forget that Psychic Hammer knocks back too (but don't bother putting any more points into it)!
Natasha, Visala and Melody will be back. Sometime in the next few months. Right now I'm playing a variant with maxed FOF, pts in PStrike, and Shadow Master, and I will go back to them once I get this girl matriarched (my first ever).
Also, I agree with PB, for the assassin, Blade sentinel at least gives you something to do while you watch everyone else.
Normal is over and I have started to collect my base equipment. Rhyme and Insight... My assassin has now max in Fade and 14 in Shadow Master. 4 pts in Venom (which is my next one to focus on) and 8 wasted points in Cloak of Shadow... Well, well you learn something new every day.
Nothing spectacular happened in normal, not fight wise and not find wise.

@queenEm - Congrats on the Destroyer! Well done. Live and learn with CoS I suppose, but at least it's a character where skill points are not stretched too thin, so it shouldn't make a huge difference in the end. Good luck in NM!
Isen and Kasim finished up Nihl and Cows then ventured on into NM with generally the same tactics, except for when confronted with hordes of undead creatures, which tend to prevent getting Holy Bolts to Kasim and Shamans and their minions who we needed to convert until Kasim could kill off all the little Carvers and then slay the Shamans just as they changed back to the enemy once again. Kasim had to be resurrected dozens of times throughout Act I thus far.
Found an Impaler War Spear in the Hole as well as another Crushflange. A second Cathan's ring and two Beserker's axes were dropped in Trist. Found another Isenhart's breastplate and actually gambled a set of Threads of Cthon boots. First S/U I've think I ever gambled. Cows dropped Bladebone Axe, Arcanna's helm and a Leadcrow crossbow.
All in all it hasn't been too terribly exciting, just shooting thousands of Holy Bolts at Kasim and switching from Cleanse to Salvation depending on if he gets confronted with a nasty elemental Unique pack such as these fellows. The cold enchanted, stone skin or extra strong ones such as Sharp Froth the Grim being the worst.
I tried my luck at converting these suckers and having them fight two boss pack archers on one normal zombie after they toasted Kasim and they only did measly damage to one another for how badly they were damaging the pair of heroes. They serve better as a distraction than a useful weapon like a Necromancer's Summoned Monsters. It's fun to manage them though and it a great crowd control spell for sure.
If Isen can stand back and gain a clear shot at Kasim he can stand in an entire swarm of monsters hammering on him and stay alive, even though he gets caught in hit recovery quite a bit it's still no worries usually, unless they are really nasty or start messing with Isen when he gets to close. Kasim is definitely earning his paycheck!
His Insight Partizan is doing sufficient damage still once he gets in the groove and pokes them a few times consistently. He lacks life leech like he had on his previous Savage weapon, which made his health a whole lot easier to manage.
This was quite the showdown, but Kasim eventually prevailed as the thorns of the Edge bow is a great help against hard hitting beasts when Conversion is not needed.
Dang found the wrong skillset booster for this tourney.
This Unique bosses' pack was downright nasty, I think she killed Kasim multiple times and Isen had to give her a wide berth every time she would curse them. They took out her partners first and then was able to best her as well. When Kasim is cursed it's usually lights out for him if Isen isn't close enough to quickly start blasting him with bolts.
Moving a bit slower now in NM, since this is definitely a defensive build and sometimes it's difficult getting Kasim to move properly without putting Isen at too much risk. It will only get worse I'm sure.
Isen and Kasim, Level 50, Approaching the Malus
Great progress! I haven't had much time to play (again) - we have reached L26 and gotten the Viper Amulet so now we are ready to plow through the Arcane Sanctuary.
Cleared act1 in NM-I have had to find some better armor for the merc cause he kept dying on me... A rare Bone helm had to do. I am one level away from max in Shadow master and she does some damage which is nice. Might not be so good in Hell but there is time to worry about that later... Found a Io rune which is nice I suppose. Otherwise not much...
PassiveQueen, lvl 52 Lut Gholein NM
Isen and Kasim battled their way to Andariel, as you can see was a very safe fight for Isen standing passively behind Kasim blasting him with Holy Bolts and providing his Cleansing aid. You could tell Andy was extremely angry with them, with all the growling and hissing she was producing from her foul mouth. Of course Kasim was poisoning the crap out of her as well with his Insight weapon and no one would come to her aid.
Here is a skills amulet, which was found somewhere in the Catacombs.
This nasty little skeleton mage boss just kept teleporting all around the sewers, he had one of the best AIs I've seen on a D2 monster. He was quite crafty! Usually they wait till they are about dead and teleport once, this fellow kept teleporting half a dozen times during the entire fight and all the while with plenty of health.
This Ghostly Marauder pair could put a hurting on you, but with Salvation and Holy Bolts it was pretty safe for Ilzan. Darn phallus shaped piling is in the way of his action shot.
Lovely gloves gambled from Gheed with Weaken charges I might try out on Duriel if we get there.
Primo Conversion shot here, this tactic saved their butts quite often in the tombs.
