felixbavaria said:Coronets have higher magic level than circlets (13 iirc), so they can get better affixes. However, by the time they regularly show up in the gambling window circlets can get most affixes too. IMO it's only worth gambling them if you want a shot at +2 class skills, which means at clvl 82 (minimum ilvl = 77, alvl = 90).

Great updates on Bones! Very interesting build for this tourney.
Yes, ghosts will probably be your worst enemies.
Dazliare said:God damnit. I'm so bad at this game.
This is almost the exact same way I died on Vladimir - restarting after my computer crashed, and trying to run past enemies that I had already killed. I was using a teleport amulet, but didn't have the fhr/fcr frames to get out of this corner
I'm super disappointed about this too, because outside of surviveability (yay for low life and low block!), Quelana was insanely strong, with Hydra bolts dealing almost 1k per hit.
Pb_pal said:Sorry about the deeds Daz.Sorc was a tough pick in this tournament. They're fragile enough as it is, much less with the restrictions on vit/dex like you mentioned.
My druid had more than twice as much health when I killed him (at just about the same spot), so don't feel too bad!![]()
OldSoldier said:Those are dangerous situations there. I try my best to go through previously cleared areas without killing anything but in some instances I have to make a stand. I'd actually S&E in places like that which have already been cleared and don't really consider them part of the tournament area.
I still don't have screenshot capability so it will be brief for me: Sharon killed Baal. She went /P8 through everywhere but act II along the way. The last part of Act V and the cows dropped quite a few uniques and sets, which was nice. One was useful as well - Stormstrike. I unequipped a nice rare stag bow to put it on (Zephyr is on switch for some additional FRW, which gets me up to 90% when equipped) so now Sharon sports 25% piercing attack. Her merc is a blessed aim one and I don't intend to change that. She's got a very high chance to hit and the pierce is good and very helpful when shooting exploding arrows (her primary skill).
She wears a Lore helm because it has great mods for a bowazon, a stealth armor for the FRW and mana regen, Sander's boots and gloves for the IAS, FRW, AR and attribute bump and assorted other stuff to keep her resists in the positive in nightmare.
Sharon, the Quick Tempered (i.e. Exploding) Bowazon, Level 48, NM Cold Plains
In the interest of having a character in this tournament that actually makes it to the end (plus I wanted to continue to play a character until I could get my screen shots working again) I started another character. Very similar to Norcim’s character actually, but he’s been using Teeth a lot. So please add to the table Splat, a high energy dentist, a character I’ve never played HC before, and using a stat I don’t think I’ve ever willingly put too many points before (energy). He’s in Act V now, I believe at the Crystalline Passage. He is using a plain white +3 teeth wand, a +2 teeth necro head with 2 chipped diamonds in it (I haven’t found anything better yet) and some other assorted knick knackery. I actually like teeth in places like act III jungles because it is easier to aim than bone spear. My spear is almost maxed anyway because it is the better skill in later levels, but for now Splat focuses on his dentistry.
What’s cool about him is that fighting Duriel he barely had 100 HP. He got a 16.5% life increase when he gave the bird to Alkor (from 121 to 141!) and fought /P8 Diablo with less than 200 HP. Bone Spirit and copious dodging of lightning hose saved the day there. The fire novas hurt though!
Splat, the High Energy Dentist, Level 41, just saved Anya
OldSoldier said:I found my screenshots from before but this is the only one that's good and a clear reason why Sharon chose an Act II merc and didn't wait for one from Act V.
Splat killed Baal too. Here's a few shots of how he works while playing. Remember this is +5 teeth.
It is very handy when the enemies are low HP but move around a lot like these imps and flayers. They go down in about 4 or 5 teeth and several at a time end up dying so it is quicker than with spear.
Here is the normal Baal drop. I think I'll put the Iceblink on the merc for the freeze. It should work most of the way through NM anyway. On a side note, Baal's Blood Mana curse kind of stinks with barely over 200 hit points. Alas, I decided to spam through it and chug healing potions.
Only one NDE; this one. It was a couple seconds after I touched an evil urn and six death lords surrounded Splat. He used up his three rejuv potions and somehow walked out of the middle of them (and I mean right in the middle) when they were all mid swing, all frenzied up. In later difficulties he'd have been a goner for sure. He should have been this time, too.

@OldSoldier Nice progress, and welcome to Splat! I love teeth, I made a dentist in SC once, but never used it in a tourney.
@felixbavaria That's one sick armor there, gratz!
I was going to do an update, but now I'll just wait until either death or act end I think. But it should be soon at least!

kestegs said:Well, I ended up with some time sooner than I thought and the play went faster than I thought, so here we go!
Act 5 NM could be summed up with a recurring theme of annoying ranged attackers.
Burning dead archers in the foothills are just terrible, even with cyclone armor. Bloody foothills had spear cats. Nice shield here, probably won't see use though. Infernal pit had dart flayers and witches, not real fun. Also got fire snakes in one of these areas, who appear to not completely do fire damage as they could damage me with cyclone up. Dang nice weapon....for someone else. First Hel rune, took long enough! Rune luck has been pretty bad, you know it's bad when you SS a Hel rune XD.
Anya went pretty smoothly, got snakes, undead, and gloams, but nothing too scary really.
I was pretty worried about Nihl of course, as I have no corpse disposal and need to be in close quarters to kill stuff effectively. Found some frostburns, probably not going to use (60 str, and I don't need mana that bad) Nice pelt here, but 2os would have been nicer. Haven't used it yet, but will maybe put some stuff in it when I arrange my hell gear. I really wanted to go home, as I was worried about Nihl...but it wasn't meant to be. Unfortunately my fears were immediately confirmed upon entering the Halls of Vaught. I popped back up the stairs and grabbed my amulet of life everlasting I had grabbed for this session and went back down to slog through. It was a pretty rough level, merc died many times, but I was never in serious danger with careful play. Nihl was scary as always, and he was Extra fast, which made him an extra pain to get to and kill. But he eventually died, and I was able to get out of there at last!
Most everything else was pretty smooth sailing up to the ancients, except for the icy cellar. Hell lords, snakes. Champion and boss hell lords are really tough for me, my merc can't stand up to them for any amount of time, and they are fast once frenzied. Thankfully I bought a teleport staff to keep on switch. Luckily the cellar map I got had lots of moats to be cheesy with... Extra fast, thankfully I saw him from across the moat, could have been deeds for sure, and there was actually a double pack of them in that corner!
I was pretty worried about the ancients, do much can go wrong with no re-rolls and especially at /p8. Ended up going smoothly though, was able to separate 2 out at the start and neither were too terribly damaging at least. Talic first. More extra fast? Yay! Then Madawc, slow to kill with SS, but whatever. Then Korlic, who was easy. Used a good 4 of each potion in the fight, and I had a bunch in my inventory, so no risk.
WSK 1-3 were easy except for a champion hell lord pack who I had to separate to get killed. And stupid ice spawn boss packs.
Minor stair trap on throne level with snakes. And then another extra fast pack, blood lords this time....ugh. They were a pain for sure. This game was quickly going from annoying ranged to annoying extra fast! Cleared out the throne with no major issues. Knights were the last monster type. And of course, what should happen as I'm heading into the throne to start the waves? The ignore merc bug. Oh man, of all the times for this to happen! But there just wan't anything I could do, couldn't get him killed or restart the game, so we just hoped for the best. Waves 1-3 were simple of course. Wave 4 of course gave me an extra fast pack and also multi shot. Of course even that couldn't kill the merc. Had to do a lot of running, but those guys go down pretty quick to tornado. There was really only one thing I was worried about for Lister. And of course I got it! Extra fast lister with merc ignore is just stupid. I immediately shot out of there with my TP staff, and was able to slowly separate them. Each one required a healing potion or two, as they're just too fast to cast and run from. Lister was a royal pain, I mostly just ran in circles while my hurricane damaged him and my merc did drive by pokings. I swear I took a SS of this, but I must have forgotten. He went down eventually, after much running and potion chugging.
Baal was also pretty horrible. With no merc to occupy him he was constantly draining my mana, frosting me, and cloning himself. He also frequently walked up to melee me, and that hurts pretty bad. It was a long and obnoxious fight, with 5-10 trips back to town I'd say. Nothing useful in the drop.
Time to go kill the cows and figure out my gear for Hell! Can't decide on a player setting for act 1 yet, probably either 3 or 5. I'm pretty powerful, but the merc can't tank, and there are too many archers in act 1 to go any higher I'd say.
Rhett, level 75, NM cows
bladejj said:Kestegs, you do know how the ignore merc bug is triggered right? It happens when you stray to from him and he is forced to teleport by your side. The bug triggers upon the teleport back. While I am not sure exactly what triggers it, perhaps him spawning back to you in an unopened square, there is a chance of it triggering. Sense I found this out, I have made sure never to make him teleport back and have not entered this bug sense.
Good job finishing up act 5!
kestegs said:Yes, at least somewhat. I was never sure it was the teleporting, but I know getting too far away causes it. It was just laziness on my part, being in too much of a hurry to wait for the merc! Hopefully I've learned my lesson...bladejj said:Kestegs, you do know how the ignore merc bug is triggered right? kestegs said:I did a bad thing, a real bad thing...But we'll get to that in a minute.
I went ahead and did NM cows . it was more difficult than I expected it would be, and the merc absolutely could not stand up to more than a couple cows. After he died a few times I just let him take a break for a while. Nothing really interesting dropped. The only noteworthy thing to happen was the fact that I got no boss/champ packs besides the king.
I worked on gear some, doing some crafting of gloves and amulets, and was able to settle my Hell gear. My resists are all over 75 except poison which is about 30ish. I have 1100 life and about 450 mana. I'm only using 12 spaces in my inventory and that includes tp tome and keys. I would use more space for life charms, but I don't have any worth putting out. After I got the gear settled I was about to walk out to the Moor on /p3 when I got a sudden burst of courage and decided to go for the glory of /p5 goodness. About 10 steps over the bridge and I was already regretting it. The first 2 normal undead I came across shredded the merc. He is hopeless with a low damage weapon and no life steal. I left him dead a lot of the time, as it was just too hard to keep him safe.
I got a triple pack in the last corner of the moor 1 fallen, quill rat, quill rat. It took a long time to get all of them down. They apparently have life steal, which doesn't help. It was hard to get any closer than the edge of the screen, and tornadoes are very hard to aim that far. Several NDEs there.
I headed down to the den. Things were a little easier there, but not much better. The problem was that I had run out of time to play, as this was all taking about twice as long as I had planned on. I got to the end only to find a PI/CI treat. I really had to go, so I went to town to park for a while and try to come up with a plan to kill him. When I came back to my computer it had of course restarted....grrrrr! It was pretty unlikely I was going to kill him, and under single pass I don't feel right going back in there. So I'll forgo the quest reward and move on. Not sure I can make it through the act, but if I do I'll be doing the rest of the game at /p1. Who made that stupid rule anyway!!!

kestegs said:Yes, I'm kinda rusty apparently. Haven't played a character in hell in probably nearly 2 years.

OldSoldier said:Kestegs, I have one simple phrase for you: Doh! I hope you can prevail regardless.
I will go ahead a post an update myself, this time for Sharon the Bowazon. Last time we checked in she was in the NM Cold Plains.
Thanks to her merc's rare ethereal partizan with ctc amp on it, many bosses end up feeling the wrath of Haseen, and Blood Raven was no different.
She was also able to get some cool chest drops along the way. Unfortunately, nothing useful.
I think this was a chest drop too.
Andariel smoked Haseen pretty fast even with maxed poison but some blood pool running and explosive arrows with her Edge runeword Stag Bow (+1) brought the drama down to acceptable levels.
Haseen's amp stick was useful in many instances in act II, especially here against Radament. My tactic was to lure away all the minions, freeze/shatter them with Freezing Arrow and Haseen, and then pick off the bosses. I plan to use the same tactic in hell if I make it this far again because it worked pretty well. There was only one spot where a champ pack and a super unique boss with multi shot were in the same room that it caused problems.
I found a Hel and a Fal last night, so I lack a Lum to make a Lionheart. Hope we can find one! Rune luck has been good for Sharon so far, including 4 Dols a crap load of Thuls, a few Sols and a couple Shaels.
First thing I thought when I saw this was "SWEET I FOUND SOME GORE RIDERS!!!" Unfortunately, Gorefoot is not as nice so I sold them for 8000 gold. You know it has been 4 years since playing when...
I used a cheesy trick of basically allowing Duriel to pound himself into dust on Haseen using Edge's thorns aura. I'm not proud of it but it worked, and hey, Bowazons vs Duriel need all the help they can get.
Duriel's drop included two unique axes. I think I have almost all of the normal unique axes now. Odd.
Sharon spends all her money feeding her Circlet (nice rares needed, inquire within) and Long Bow (Raven Claw or Kuko) and Long Battle Bow (Wizendraw) gambling addiction with not much luck yet. She is still sporting her Lore helm because it has good mods that I haven't been able to beat yet. Haseen has a nice circlet with res all, 21% damage and some life.
I think I made a mistake by going fire first and ice second on her skills. Her fire is great but maxed out at about 500 damage per explosion. I know that Ice gets up to about 1,000 eventually, but I went fire first. Oh well, it just slows pace a bit, nothing major.
She did act I at /P8 and act II at /P7.
Level 60 Bowazon Sharon, NM Kurast Docks
edited to fix some spelling and add her level.
OldSoldier said:Splat has also been making good progress as well. He has been indulging his gambling habit, mostly looking for circlets and boots.
Here is a nice one for Sharon, since that fire damage stacks onto her explosive arrows nicely (I sure think so anyway). Too bad Splat got it. He did keep it for the teleport and life but I think a better one will come along eventually.
Here is a nice GC. See how much life Splat has even with it? Ugh it isn't pretty. You can also see that Splat is carrying stamina potions in his belt in NM! I've since changed them out because he isn't needing them as much after gaining stamina via 52 level ups. But just barely...
Jiansonz I found you a nice scepter for your paladin in the other tournament. I have no idea how much this would cost to buy but those skills are pretty nice.
Possible weapon upgrade for Emilio, but it does have poor damage output.
Here is a good shot of a typical fight. Defiance aura Haseen (I was going to change to holy freeze but changed my mind. I've never used a Defiance the entire game and this guy rarely gets pummeled too badly) fights a super unique monster with a funny name. My boys and I poke fun at their bellies (they are 5 and almost 4 years old) and we call their tiny tummies "rot guts" so this monster made me chuckle.
I have never used bone prison before. I only have a few points in it, but cast it a few times around Andariel and she is a pushover. Amazing!
Andariel dropped a unique amulet and Vidala's Boots! I cannot equip them though, my strength is poor.
I equipped this right away because the attributes and resistances are sweet. My vitality went from 15 to 25 with this bad boy!
I usually like to go and kill Radament after finishing off Andariel if I have time, and this character moves a lot faster than Sharon so we did it. I put a few prisons around Radament and punched about 500 holes in him with bone spear and he went down easy peasy. His rune luck is not as good as Sharon by a long shot but he does have an Io so he's a Dol away from his end game weapon.

After rescuing Anya, we kind of sprinted to the Ancients because clearing the game would be a waste of time if we can't defeat them.
Gotta love those mods on an Imp boss:
The Ancients roll was Fanaticism (Leaper) / Stone Skin (Thrower) / Lightning Enchanted (Whirler), manageable. It was good to carry an additional pack of arrows, as 350 were not enough to wear them down. Burnt through all super healers / mana potions too.
