Angelique has finally made it through all of normal. It was a long slog using only static field, but not particularly difficult. The teleporting imps were extremely annoying, since I literally had no way of hitting them directly, and the mercenary is painfully slow at chasing them down. Teleport helped a little, but I was reluctant to use mana potions since the belt I'm using still has only 2 slots and I didn't want to repeatedly have to visit town.

I'm glad to report a major improvement in equipment - Angelique has now managed to fill everything single slot with items that won't break! Her best possession is this beauty:

The item I chose to personalize was a plain, 2-socket Circlet. I'm not very pleased with the state of my headgear, so I will make a Lore helm once I find an Ort. I used up all the ones I had making an Amn for my Spirit, and didn't manage to find another.

Now that I've reached nightmare, I can finally spend all those skill points I've saved up! I currently have 44 free skill points, which I plan to dump into Frozen Orb and Cold Mastery (20 and 10, I think), saving the leftover points for Hell and Fire Wall. I can't wait to actually be able to kill monsters rather than just weakening them.

Spirit_Bull has just defeated Mephisto. He did it on P5 (forgot to go back to P1 again:whistling:), and it was toe-to-toe with two Spirit swords (one a broad sword and one a long sword). It took two times going back to town for potions.

He still must find that KO rune to make a Harmony Bow for Annor. She is getting a little ansy. He promised it to her and she is going to hold him to it. It may take until the countess run in HELL though. He still must find another LUM and another IO to cube up the KO. That could happen in Act 4 with a little luck. If it does not, someone has to remind me to go back to P1 for Diablo!

Spirit_Bull has defeated Diablo and is talking to Larzuk in Harrogath. He is glad to be home, but it appears that his home is not the way he left it. But, I guess that is old news.

He has been playing on P5 for quite some time now. He did remember to go down to P1 for Diablo, so that battle was rather easy and fortunately, uneventful. I am really not used to playing a melee character, but I am convinced that life is far more important than anything else when you have to square off against a creature like Diablo. Well, a close second place is the belt full of health potions and full resistances. Getting full resistances in Hell is going to be a challenge, but that is OK, because just getting to Hell is going to be a challenge.

No new equipment. I spent almost 2 million in gold trying to gamble a decent pair of boots. I found a few fine pairs, but none that Spirit_Bull could wear.

The two Spirit swords are doing OK, but the Bowyer merc is doing more damage than Spirit_Bull. Getting better weapons will be an objective now that his strength is up to 70 (+18 with equipment bonuses). If he has to, he could add about twenty strength with charms, but that depends on what kind of weapon he can find. He needs 4 sockets, so that and about 100 strength limits him to the following swords:

Rune Sword
Espandon
Dacian Falx
Tusk sword

If he spends a few of his 17 spare skill points on Axe or Mace mastery, he could widen his choices, but of course the Spirit runeword is not possible:

I guess I will have to check the runewords for these. My current best runes are IO, LUM, LEM and PUL (still no KO).

Spirit_Bull has rescued Anya and defeated Nihlathak. That means that it is time to make some decisions. I gambled another 1.5 million of gold trying to get some good boots that Spirit_Bull could wear. I found a couple that would have been candidates for personalizing, but they were not really worth that. Finally I gambled and got this:

Pretty lousy actually, but it has the right name and the FRW and FHR will be of some help. The two resistances are more than the last boots had, so I guess I should not complain.

The good thing is that now the decision to personalize a weapon was obvious. My two Spirit swords were of minimal quality having been made from a broad sword and a long sword. I decided to replace the broad sword because it was a bit slower. I had three good choices:

Any of the three would double the damage of the Spirit Sword. The fleshrender was attractive because of the Prevent Monster Heal/crushing blow/Open wounds/Deadly Strike enhancements. Stormspike had a bunch of lightning damage and lightning resistance, but it required more dexterity that I had (18 points). That meant that 3 charms with +6 Dex would have to be carried. The Aldur's Rhythm was very fast and had excellent life steal and mana steal. In addition, it has 2 empty sockets.

In the end, the empty sockets in the Aldur's Rhythm was the decision maker. I added two perfect rubies to get fire damage to go with the lightning damage that it already had. It is now Spirit_Bull's Aldur's Rhythm!

I am still looking for a KO rune to make Annor her Harmony Bow. It seems there is always something to strive for!

Total Score is +958

That is a reduction in score due to losing 22 vitality with the lose of the one Spirit sword, and the addition of 10 strength due to the larzuk socket added to the Spirit Shroud Ghost Armor and the perfect Amythyst inserted in it.

I started a character for this tournament a couple of weeks ago, but didn't sign up as I was unsure if I would have the time to commit. It turns out I should be ok, so we will see how it goes.

Introducing Spiritwalker the druid.
Spiritwalker is starting his life as a summoning druid and will probably eventually be a fire / summon hybrid (either that or a shock bear). Act 1 was fairly uneventful but slow until I got dire wolf (I decided to only put one point into spirit wolf). The dire wolf sped things up a little bit although damage output is still mostly from my merc.

Spiritwalker has been fairly lucky with item drops. I managed to gamble a word boots, found rare eth goves with self-repair and my imbue gave me self-repair. I haven't found a useable belt yet though. I also found a total of 20!!!! chipped topazes ...

Wraith_Flea has finished off acts 4 and 5

Not a lot to report, I was maybe a little overconfident in my wolves as I took Diablo act P8, he burned through the wolves faster than I had hoped, but It wasn't too bad. I had made an eth partizan into "strength" for the merc, so he had some CB at least. Diablo didn't drop anything usable.

Act 5 was pretty easy, I also got very frustrated with the act 5 open areas with all of the Imps, I rolled at least one Imp type on all of them, and 2 types on 1 or 2 of them. Ancients were a breeze, and Lister and CO. were not too bad, but they did take some time. My wolves started to lose effectiveness in act 5, but they still rarely died except to very tough fights (lister, Cursed+ champion abominables) I was feeling cocky so I took baal at p8 (I'm used to playing casters) He was a lot tougher than I thought he would be! he of course immediately cloned himself, and summons are suckers for another summon! He did eventually go down after several trips to town. Only thing good he left was an Undead Crown (not eth) that the merc may eventually get.

Gear hasn't improved much, I haven't gambled any new usable items. The funniest drop I got was a 1os ETH Ghost shroud! Seriously game?

Which obviously leads to the question of what my NM skill choices will be. Rabies of course! Been planning this build for a while, since I thought of it, and didn't see any write-ups on one, so we will see how it all turns out. Due to some poor planning and putting more into the summoning tree than I should have, I only go rabies to level 7, but it will get all of my next 13 points.

Only got to level 48.5, must have been the lack of good monster rolls and no exp shrines in the last 2 acts :(

I could easily boost my str up 30 points with charms, but really have no reason to do so yet.

Before I get into my sad tale, I would like to welcome JCakes to the tournament. Enjoy!!

Now for the sad tale. Spirit_Bull was not able to get by the Ancients. They were relentless and he was not able to scarf down potions quick enough. Part of the problem may be that I did not have any experience fighting them with a melee character. In fact, I do not recall ever getting to HELL difficulty with one. The rest of the problem can be blamed on this crazy tournament. I chose my second tree to be the Masteries instead of Warcries. I had saved 16 skill points to put into warcries, but alas, I will never get the chance to use them. I do not believe that using those points elsewhere would have improved Spirit_Bull enough to get by the Ancients. However, having warcries (Battle command in particular) would have been useful.

In the end, my ability (inability) to play melee characters would have probably sealed his fate anyway.

As far as playing a Barbarian in this tournament is concerned, there are a couple advantages. First of all, he does start with 30 strength. That gives him a chance to wear quite a few items early in the game. Second, he gets a lot of life when he levels up. That was the only reason he lasted as long as he did.

However, there are a couple major disadvantages too. The biggest disadvantage is the fact that the melee barbarian is a hands-on type. He cannot stand back at a safe distance. That means that all ethereals wear out quickly. In fact, it is hardly worth bothering unless the ethereal has self repair. The other disadvantage is that the barbarian lives with his strength and he simply cannot get as much as you would like in this tournament. Spirit_Bull died with 70 natural points and 34 points from items that he was wearing. He could have used charms to get about 30 more points if they were needed. He had intended to do that if the right weapon came along, but it never did. The right weapon would have probably been a 4 socketed sword to make another Spirit sword.

My next attempt will be with an Amazon.  Spirit_Zon will start out with the active passive tree and try to bring a Valk into the fray as soon as possible, maybe in time for Mephisto.  She will not get a bow until act 5, so she will have to find some way to live without a weapon of consequence for some time.  Maybe a mercenary will carry her for a while. She will dream about an ethereal spear with self repair, but there is a saying about such dreams, and it is not complementary to them.

Just finished Act V / Cows here is a quick summary
- used socket reward to make a spirit sword as seen in my previous post
- once I hit 40 I started attempting to gamble ghost armours and demonhide sashes.
- used the personalisation reward on a rare demonhide sash that I gambled
- created a stealth ghost armor from a drop in the crystaline passage
- now have every slot filled with eth self repair or "worded" items
- Grizzly bear and merc are doing a very good job at killing things only used 4 red pots (on the merc) and resummed grizzly ~ 6 times for Baal
- Cows dropped a Sol, Shael and an Amn
- finished Act5 just on level 49

Well, I've been having a hard time in Act4 lately for some unknown reason, and have lost 4 characters in that dreaded act, this was my second Druid to die to Diablo, and I literally needed on hit on him to kill him. Oh well.

Took a bit to finally get this character in gear, but Spirit-Revenge is a hammerdin to be born to get revenge for my slain druid, at least against Diablo.

Starting out was quite fast, I pumped Holy Bolt to 8(10 now) to deal with the massive undead waves all over the game. With the synergy from Blessed Hammer it deals around 750average, not bad at all.

The item of the day came on my superb lack of choices for imbue. Only a scepter was my choice, it spawned with two auras. Holy Shock, and Concentration. AWESOME!. Pretty Good luck I must say, as it has added a tad of damage to my hammers and my mercenaries output. Took me two levels to finally equip it though.

Other than that, I strolled through Act 2 with the scepter, a repair durability skull cap and a busted sash. Very few ethereal drops for me. Pumping Holy Shield with no shield was interesting.

Act 3 finally yielded a Bone Shield in one of the Kurast areas, and the council was nice enough to drop me rare eth light gauntlets with 22% MF and nothing really else. Also found a 2os in Flayer to give me a Stealth. So I was starting to look cool I guess. Mephisto improved my MF by 8% by dropping a 20% nagel to replace my 12%MF magic ring.

Act4 yielded an upgrade to the belt slot, a belt dropped with +3 strength, and later on a plated belt(50str require is out of reach currently) Hellforge yielded me a mighty nef, guess it makes up for the Thul I found in the act early. Diablo finally succumbed to my run in gunning hammer tactics. Angelic Sickle dropped and nothing else usable.

Angelique has beaten down Andariel and Duriel for the second time. The going was very smooth with the exception of the occasional Cold-immune boss. In particular, one CI mummy in a false tomb was nearly unbeatable. It took me about 5 minutes to wear him down with the merc and several times I thought I would never do it. He regenerated about as fast as my merc could damage him, even with me interrupting him as much as I could with telekinesis. I really need to get him a better weapon. I've been looking for a base for Insight for a while now, but no luck yet.

On a brighter note, a Visceratuant (+1 Sorc skills shield) dropped in Act 2, and will almost certainly be the recipient of my personalization reward in Act 5. I might even socket it too.

Frozen Orb is cutting through monsters with ease right now, so I have another 23 skill points saved up for Hell already. Most normal mobs are two-hit kills, and even bosses go down fast. I don't anticipate any major problems until I get to Hell. My resistances could use some work soon though. I'm still wearing a pair of Nagelrings and an MF ammy, so swapping those out with good crafted jewelry will help some. I need to find a way to upgrade my Stealth Ghost Armor though. It's still useful for the 25% FCR and 25% FHR, but I could really use more resists soon. Hopefully I'll find a Lum sometime soon. I've already saved up an extra 2-socket Ghost Armor for when one drops.

Spirit_Zon has put the staff together and is using it for a weapon. She has found several other usable ethereal weapons, but they do not last too long. One was runed into "Steel" and that mace will be used sparingly. Still need gloves and armor that are repairable. A lot of gambling has turned up very little lately, but a helm and belt (Spirit and Wraith) were gambled early in the first act.

I'm a little late to the party, but I'd still like to join. A tournament seems like a good way to get back into D2. Sorceresses seem under-represented, so I'll try one of those. I plan on going Fire in Normal, Cold in NM, and then Lightning in Hell if the lack of Teleport doesn't get me killed.

Spirit_Zon has defeated Mephisto and moved on to the Pandamonium Fortress. She purposely played at P1 during Act 3 in hopes of being able to level up more often in Act 4 to get the strength that is available there. The act was not very exciting, but at least the game moved quickly for a change.

She is wearing an ethereal Chain Mail. That is why she is using enough charms to get her strength up to 38. She still has no gloves, and her armor needs replacing regularly. She has a couple repairable weapons, but they do not do much damage. Here is an example that could be made workable with a couple good socket fillers. I am just not sure that I want to waste the socket fillers on this:

Angela had some pretty good luck with her countess runs, getting Shael, Thul, Hel, Ort, and Sol out of them. The Sol was the first she'd ever seen, and went immediately into her eth helm w/ 1 Ort already inside to make Lore.

She hasn't seen an Io yet, though, so she hasn't yet made 'Black'. Her weapon is actually pretty bad, just a set of plain eth throwing spears. It doesn't matter too much just yet, since she's still mostly killing things with fire traps, and blade fury is still only at one point.

She decided not to use her imbue on a weapon, but for a belt, which wasn't even eth, and didn't turn out to have any of the special words. So she's still running with the belt she found in act II normal, which was a plain blue 3-slot belt with a mighty +3 life and even more mighty 12% enhanced defense. She's avoided a lot of hits, being ranged, but even so the belt is down to 3/9 durability. So her priority was to replace her crappy, nearly broken belt, and she didn't get lucky. (I forsee gambling in her future.)

She found a Dol on her way to Andy, who didn't die quite as quickly as expected, as I was using fire on her. Andy still died, though, without incident.

SpiritedTool's trek through Normal was fast and relatively uneventful, so I'll just do one big update. I spent most of the game at P5 without full clears, so it went by quickly. I decided to make her first tree fire. Early on, she found an appropriate rare staff with +1 fire bolt, an auspicious start. Unfortunately, things went downhill from there. Aside from her jewelry and an occasional plain ethereal armor, she found nothing else to wear. It turns out she didn't need any equipment, as standing behind her merc proved quite safe. I had to dump some points into Energy just to make the early levels tolerable, but she's drinking mana potions like they're, well, manna from heaven.

She went through the entirety of Normal with only one row of potions, which was a huge pain. It cost my merc his life on a couple of occastions. I gambled several hundred thousand gold on boots, gloves, and belts and found one useable belt with life, mana, FHR, and most importantly the name Spirit Lash Belt. From the very beginning I set my sights on using a Spirit Crystal sword. No 4-socket swords dropped, so I used Larzuk's quest reward to put 4 sockets into it. Alas, not only do I not have enough strength (didn't plan well), I'm also missing an Amn rune. My resists are terrible, so I decided to use my personalization quest on a 3-socket shield. I neglected to check the strength requirement on that, so that's currently also unavailable. NM is going to be fun with Frozen Orb.

Just finished NM act 1 time for a quick summary

-Countess running was quite profitable, I found an amn, 2 sols, an ort and a lum for my five runs I also found a white spirit mask for a later imbue
-The lum went straight into a ghost armour along with a nef to make me a smoke
- The sol went into the first 4 socket polearm I found to make an insight, I will make another one when I find a better base
-I found a useable rare shield (wraith mark) which is an upgrade to my previous one
- The imbued spirit mask is very sweet
+2 shapeshifting, 10%FHR, CR, 2 sockets, 5 energy 16 life, +3 to grizzly +2 solar creeper, +1 volcano
- I really like shockwave, I have never used the skill previously but it is seriously awesome.
- Andy was kind, dropped a nice rare ring and a crown of theives (for the merc)
- I have runes and gems coming out of spirit_walkers rear, I think I have 4 sols now ...

Frozen Orb makes NM rather simple, at least when I don't go charging into rooms without teleport. The problem I've noticed, as someone else pointed out previously, is that sorceresses only get 2 HP per vitality and -5 points per level. This makes getting points a bit slow.

I was able to basically run through Acts 1 & 2 at P3, stopping only to collect loot. I still needed an Amn to complete Spirit, and I hoped that my Countess runs would provide the much-needed rune. However, in the Dark Wood, an Amn dropped from a random monster (as a side note, I last quit D2 before 1.13 came out and I'm loving the rune coloring). Fortunately, I had also just found a grand charm with +6 to strength, so I had everything I needed to make Spirit. I think I was happier about the extra mana than the life or skills.

It didn't take many Countess runs to max out the allowed runes - Thul, Sol, Amn, Shael, and Dol. Not exactly a great haul, but the Sol would be nice for Insight when I found a 4-socket polearm. Someone heard me, as moments later a 4-socket partizan dropped. Play picked up considerably as I no longer needed to quaff mana potions.

Act 2 was a breeze. Duriel was kind enough to drop some wearable rare boots. I also found a 2-socket ghost armor and made Stealth, lacking any better runes. At least I'm wearing real armor now. I still need a helm, gloves, and a few more strength for my personalized triple diamond shield.

Spirit_Zon has finished off Diablo with the help of his recently acquired Valk. She has leveled five times in Act 4 for another 25 strength. That may be all she gets for quite some time though.

Her best equipment is none too good. It is either the ethereal Gull Dagger that she tries to remember to switch to when bosses drop (it works occasionally), or the Stealth Ethereal Chain Mail. Her weapon that can be repaired is:
