Either its me being too lucky or something but with 86 % chance to pierce I can wait forever for a non-piercing arrow but I never see it. Also I`ve tried glacial spike with one of the crossbows that had 50% pierce and the spell was piercing 100% of the time. Now you made me think cold mastery might be involved as well.

Hey guys, looking to get started with some 1.07 action, really just for the fun of it, though if I manage to get a decent craft or some good charms, I wouldn't mind ;-) . The question I have is, does the iron maiden/ blood golem combo work in 1.07? If it does, does it work well? I was thinking about making a necro with max blood golem, iron maiden and bone spear, with some utility spells (CE, Bone Prison, and Bone Armor) raised to 10 (prior to + skills). A smattering of 1 point wonders would finish off my selections. If that combo is non-functional in this version of d2, though, that would obviously change those plans. Any insights?

Has anyone been able to use Trenshadow's Version Switcher with windows Vista?

Yeah, I'm using Trenshadow's Version Switcher with Vista, and I had a hell of a problem to get it to run, but I honestly don't remember what I did, but now it works... I'll try to think of it! The only problem even now is that the scripts don't work properly after I end a game started with the version switcher, i.e. I have to manually copy back the 1.11 game.exe and modified d2gfx.dll, because TVS won't do that.

If I can remember what I did, I'll PM you (and post it here)!

Another option would be to dual-boot Windows XP, but I don't recommend that if you're no expert at it. I'm no expert, and it took me a week... :rolleyes:

- Changed items with pierce to use their pierce value as a percentage
instead of as a level in the skill.
- Fixed a bug which allowed spells cast to have piercing while wearing
items of piercing.

From 1.08 patch notes - seems like I found the answer to my question - the unique crossbows with 50% pierce gives lvl 50 Pierce (while Razortail should give "only" lvl 1 Pierce), jeez... Thats why Sorc`s spells were piercing pretty much all the time. Now to think of how to abuse this...... :-P

@Sir Mister: although you probably found the answer already - I think the blood golem/iron maiden combo only worked in early classic versions.

I can confirm that the blood golem / IM combo DOES infact work. I had my doubts at first aswell, but after playing him for a while now I've proved it on numerous occasions by having my golem getting raped and losing hp rapidly and then just casting IM and watching his hp jump back up. Some things to consider though: IM isnt a fast killer, its kill speed dropped noticeably in nightmare and probably will aswell in hell, it does make some fights like lister a cakewalk though. Blood golem only gains extra life from points in golem mastery and not from points in blood golem, so you'll need to put points in both.
Bosses, especially with elemental attacks like meph and diablo **** the golem in a matter of seconds, and its pretty mana intensive to keep recasting (plus you cant buy mana pots). Since youre using IM you wont be able to use amp dmg for more corpse explosion or lower resists for better bone damage at the same time, and swapping between them is prolly a nuisance. GL though, I'm finding mine decently fun and enjoy the barb merc for company since I dont need a desert dude.

The only entry about Blood Golem in later patches is the added synergy in 1.10.

I wonder what have they been fixing then :)

Edit: btw what made you play a necro instead of the overpowered static/orb sorcy?
I find it much easier (and more enjoyable) to play "for fun" in 1.12.
I don`t have a single necro in 1.07 and guess I never will - classes that I find "effective" are sorc, barb and zon, druids have some potential (very powerful fury) but barbarians (Whirlwind! Itemfind!) still top them for MF (which is what I do in 1.07) purposes.

Before I start burning the not-so many runes I have for them, can anyone here confirm if we can imbue crafted rings/ammies in 1.07? I heard we can imbue crafted items, but I've never tried imbuing jewelries before. And just to be sure, imbuing crafted items keeps the previous mods as well, right?

Yes you can imbue any crafted item, but it wont keep previous mods (just imagine those +4 skills ammies we would probably have seen by now if that was true:)), creating a new rare just like normal imbue.

@ OP I think the 1.07 guide actually says that's possible but I havent tried it myself and cant confirm it...

Yes, no matter how impossible it sounds. You can imbue crafted rings, ammys or even sorceress orbs. You *might* have some small[i/] chance of imbuing a +4 skill orb or ammy this way, but doing so would require some insane luck.

About the build I'm playing, I just thought the IM/BG bug sounded really cool and wanted to try it out :P I was playing him today in act 4 but pretty pissed off since some mob ate my mercs corpse and made me lose the guili face i racked for him :S

That part of the 1.07 guide is also what led me to think that >.< I was hoping that the imbue process creates a rare by adding some affixes to an existing item and turning it yellow (though normally the item has no affix). Well, I guess I might hold on to my runes after all.

Yes the guide is wrong about the imbues.

BUT - 1.07 crafts still have much higher potential than those of any other patch for two reasons - magic affixes (which are available on crafts) and bugs(is there anything 1.07 related where this word doesn`t show up?xD).
Its possible for example to craft an ammy with +3 skill tab/120 mana/100hp/35%mf. Sounds good, doesn`t it? xD 30% life leech rings/ gloves (with up to 15% CB) aren`t that bad as well...

The downside is the high costs - getting decent amount of runes for the gerater crafts without HF rushing (and even with it) isn`t that easy.

Well, I'm probably gonna start up a WW barb in 1.07 and have a few questions.
Are the WW breakpoints the same as in 1.09+?
I read something about a weapon mastery bug in 1.09, does something like this apply to 1.07 aswell?
Is there an obvious choice of weapon mastery?
Is there a list of the base damage of weapons in 1.07?
Anything else I should be aware of ^^?

I`m not sure, BUT - this will make no difference at all as you should max the weapon mastery anyway because you have very little other sources of ED and no synergies to work with.

Is there an obvious choice of weapon mastery?
Yes - spear. My GFer loves his 4xShae Cruel lance with 4 frame WW. Get ready for some shopping (or a lot of it in my case). Other options are either weaker/with lower range/with much higher requirements etc. And exceptional item are much easier to shop for than any elites.

I would just stick with the Lances for whirler :-P *runs*

Yes, if you want to go through Hell - an eth in weapon (or any -%EnemyDefence) will make your life so much easier - it makes defence of mosnters negative. Also - CB is THE king, ignoring Physical Resistance and even scaling up with players. And I believe Leech is more effective than in 1.1x as well.

Kind of a double post :)

I have a couple questions, I hope someone can answer.

First - is there a reliable way to get magical Mithril Coils (Elite Belts) in 1.07 - I have no problems getting gloves and boots for greater crafts but I have spent many millions gambling belts (even with a lvl 99 character so its not being too low lvl for elite upgrade) and haven`t seen one. Is it something special about this item or am I just THAT unlucky? I wouldn`t like to rack these as I need several dozens of magical ones (although I probably will if theres no other way - they can get really awesome with 100+ life and other great mods but I want 4 potion rows and greater caster belt requires much more strength and doesn`t have so good preset mods).

Next - I`m interested in your thoughts about crafts in general. So far I`ve mostly used greater recipes that are definitely worth crafting and saved the rest of jewels (as these are the hardest to get crafting ingredients) for lesser crafts - when I make up my mind about how to use them. I have a few hundred by now and I would like to put them to a use - I`m mostly interested in items that have a good use (read:they would be the best) in later patches.
Right now I`m leaning towards dumping most of the jewels into blood gloves - those can be the best gloves in the game for several builds as they can get insane (bugged) life leech as well as +3 skill tab with other good mods and some CB.
Most of the weapons are out as you cant craft eth items. I also cant see a crafted bow being better than WF/Faith. Javelins might be good (+6 tab is possible) but require insane luck as you also need increased stack size & replenishing (only at half speed in 1.07, probably not increased when brought forward?) to beat Titans. And if you hope to get IAS on them as well it means 4 affixes out of 4 possible - definitely not something to get in one life.
Edit: with some luck crafted boots can get quite good - 35% mf/40% frw is possible but youre only left with 2 resist prefixes then and even then its once again 4 affixes out of 4 possible - so I don`t think its worth bothering.

I wouldn't rule out crafted weapons so quickly- they won't be ethereal but they may get 3 sockets from Larzuk, which can give some excellent options there.

When I get back to 1.07 at some point, I have a bunch of rushed amazon mules for whom I did the Anya quest, in hopes of getting some good ingredients for crafting bows. I was thinking about those mainly for bringing forward, but the description of your crushing blow amazon has made me think about playing around in 1.07 possibly as well.

Are these for use in later versions or for use in 1.07? Beating a 1.07 Titan's isn't hard, but beating 1.09+ Titans is quite difficult, for javelin crafts. It sounds like you are interested in bringing things forward, which is what I've generally got in mind. And for javelins you can't take advantage of the multiple socket possibilities, which is a big plus for crafted items in 1.07.

I'm not sure about a good source of mithril coils. I've focused on mostly on gloves and rings for my 1.07 crafts, with some safety body armors as well. I have gotten some huge life leech gloves, but I don't think I've seen the +3 skilltab when I was crafting those. I also crafted a lot of weapons, focusing early on claws. I got some very nice claws before I realized that there is a two-socket max in 1.07, which was a big disappointment.

I might be imagining things, but IIRC didn't the 1.07guide/addendum state that you can craft with white items as well in 1.07? I never tried crafting with whites, so I can't confirm it myself..

For the javelins, all you need is +6 skill tab and IAS to beat titans. Replenish quantity is very slow on rare and magical items. Increased stack size is useful, but not mandatory to beat titans.

@Udgard: I have found that the greater crafting recipies work with white items, but most of the lesser recipies don't seem to work without magic items. I think one of the lesser recipies I tried did work with white items, but I don't know.

I haven't done many weapon crafts in 1.07, but I did get this hydra bow with 3-sockets from larzuk:

With a lot more crafts you could get 400+% enhanced damage and maybe 40% IAS too.

I'll probably use it when I want to make a 1.07 or 1.09 cow running amazon :yes:

In my case crafting with a lvl 99 character results in ilvl 65 items so for heavy gloves alvl is 62. In 1.09 (and 1.12 as well) alvl for +3 tab on gloves is lvl 60 so hopefully its not different and its possible in 1.07 as well.
As for greater crafts - Vampirebone Gloves have a qlvl of 63 in 1.12 so probably can always spawn with +3 tab in 1.07 as well.

Just like I said I`m only after crafts that actually beat best items in later patches, and even with 3 sockets its hard to imagine a crafted weapon that is better than top runewords in 1.12, probably only for an extremely specific build, but its not worth the crafting materials anyway. Just look at Grief for example and its insane +damage, nothing from 1.07 can come close. And just like you said - even the promising claws (although probably only good for a 3fpa bearsin) can only have 2 sockets.

And in 1.07 melee characters (and bowazons) are mostly about CB and not weapon damage. Although in SC where you can afford to pump high dex that bow would make some pretty evil damage.
I also think 20% IAS is max on (x)bows.

And as far as i know only weapon recipes work with non-magical items.

Edit: btw in theory its even possible to get a 4os 300% ED/20%IAS Hydra Bow without doing any crafting at all - so far my best weapons in 1.07 come from shops which is also why I don`t want to craft weapons for use in 1.07. Although I probably will craft some more Greater Weapons - just to put those Fals to a use.
