Speaking of possible best in slot items... This is probably the best set/unique I can actually use! It helps a lot with the mana. Now I can run a 2nd row of rejuvs instead of mana pots.

Just finished the Arcane Sanctuary. I had a lot of fun shooting Hell Clans from afar. Some of the spectres got offscreened by hydra bolts, so I didn't get all their drops, but that is ok.

Next, I get to decide how many false tombs I want to do.
 
I come with good tidings.

I was on a fairly regular rotation of Eldritch, Countess, Pit, Lower Kurast, check Worldstone Keep / Throne of Destruction for immunes. Unless boss packs pair up with some unfortunate combinations, I've felt fairly safe throughout all of this (although the P8 Lower Kurast can be annoying if I run into boss packs). It was however during a Pit run that I found the item I was alluding to earlier: Homonculus! Perhaps not the best offensive choice in slot, but since this is a pseudo-hardcore playthrough, I think it's definitely up there for potentially the best. It's unlocked via Maleficium+Specialist (+Curses).

It was part way through some more of these runs that I decided I'd need to try something. Even if I get a Throne Room with no Poison Immunes, I won't be able to kill Achmel myself, something needed to be done or something needed to be created. I was starting to get some alright mid-range Runes from Countess (Lower Kurast despite the great map has yet to produce any fruit.) While I think I could have made a Crescent Moon as Dazliare suggested, I thought that it'd be best to try and weaponize my Mercenary first. Looking up items, namely Runewords, I decided the best thing I could do was make my Rogue have Delirium, Treachery, and Passion. I already had the bases for all these items (3os Demonhead, Ethereal 3os Dusk Shroud, 4os Great Bow) so I decided it was time to focus on Runes. I narrowed my runs to just the Countess and with a bit of combining and a lucky Lem drop I was able to make Treachery and Passion. I figured it might take a while to get the Ist for Delirium so I decided I should just test her out right now as her damage wouldn't be changing much with or without the helmet. Initial tests were pretty good. If I helped her out with Amp/Decrep she could take out most mobs, or I could just let her CC-lock her own enemies due to Terror/Blind. It might not be the fastest or cleanest way to kill something, but it seems serviceable.

I returned to my regular rotation with Merc in tow as I wanted her to level up to me. On our Worldstone attempt, we ran into Serpent Magi which she handled fairly well. My level three map is a very quick walk to the exit so in a short while we made it to the Throne. I decided I might as well see if I can kill Achmel, or if I'd need to hunker down to farm up an actual high end bow (like Ice, Faith, etc). The Throne was inhabited by Pit Lords, Doom/Oblivion Knights and what took forever to appear-- Burning Souls. I wasn't all too happy about their inclusion, being both dangerous and poison immune, but I didn't see any bosses for them so I figured if I was patient I could whittle them down.

Now picture how long it'd take a Rogue Mercenary who never wants to sit still to kill a Burning Soul that's also being Terror'd and Blinded? Yeah.. it takes a while, since they have a habit of running all over the map. In an optimistic choice I decided to clear out two corners of the level in case I needed to drop some Venom Lords off later. Before long the corners were cleared out and the central corridor empty. Clearing out Baal's Throne Room I went on to the first wave which was easy enough.

Then came Achmel. I seemed to have forgotten one tiny detail-- he can revive not just the skeletons but any corpse nearby. So within a few seconds I was getting bombarded by lightning from revived Burning Souls.

So I was getting shot from across the room with Lightning as my distracted Rogue tries to pluck away at Skeletons that keep getting revived. Oh, did I mention what Achmel decided to roll for his modifiers? I'm trying to kill him with my Cold Arrow Rogue using an Enhanced Damage weapon, might I remind you..

Oh, it was going to be one of those fights.

It turned out to be one of the most miserable fights I've had in a long time. Constantly reviving Burning Souls and Skeletons meant my Rogue refused to hit Achmel, and her Cold Arrow decided to never melt an enemy (is there some sort of mechanic here? Is it because he's Cold Enchanted? It seemed very odd) I cannot describe how badly I wanted to switch on Corpse Explosion and just be done with it, but I tried to tough it out. Eventually however I decided that a creative solution was needed as I was getting no where, and thus..

It's come to this, apparently the Squid was a shepherd in his past life-- or Saint Patrick.

After leading every single skeleton and Burning Soul out of the room (which took forever.. they don't like to run in straight lines.) I had Achmel to himself. With Amplify Damage he eventually fell-- the biggest hurdle towards victory had been conquered.

We moved on to my old friends the Council, who immediately vaporized my poor Merc. Fortunately, I was able to simply Nova them all down. Next came the Venom Lords, the wave of Poison Immunes. This is where my planning came into play however, and I decided to take a note from the Horadrim. When faced with unkillable foes, they needed to be banished and sealed away.

In two separate groups, I lead them to the corners of the map and TPed out, taking the walk from the Waypoint to get back so as not to aggro them. Then, all that remained was one token minion in the Throne Room, which I decided to kill rather than risk letting the others spill out.

Finally came Lister and his goon squad. With him rolling Cursed it left a pretty simple message. Get cornered and I'm dead. And so I took them on a merry chase (fortunately they weren't extra fast). Despite being 95% Resistant to Poison, my Lower Resist is at 65% so while they were tanky it was not impossible. This sharp contrast just shows how important the difference between being Immune and just highly resistant is.

Eventually they all fell and before I knew it, I was staring at the portal to go face Baal. Knowing that this was going to be a fight of endurance, there was no point in holding on to extra potions as I could just TP out. The only worry was getting one shot (or combo hit by tentacles) so I decided to once again overload my inventory with extra charms, but not before chugging some Thawing/Antidote potions for both myself and my Merc.

Baal is always a weird fight. With maxed Fire and Cold resists, I wasn't worried about his spells, namely just his melee attack and unlucky tentacle attacks. Still, he has the potential to be very annoying-- mana burn, knockback, and then doubling it up with a clone? Yuck. One particular tentacle pack summon broke my shield and put me to about half, and poor Diane was targeted by some uncharacteristically aggressive teleport melee swings by Baal. After plenty of runs home to revive my Merc and refill my belt however I heard the tell tale scream and bling of loot.

Truly, Zisla was watching, as the Holy Water Sprinkler was named Storm Cry as if a victory shout, and the Siege Crossbow was perhaps quite aptly Pus Spitter, pretty much the entire theme of the character put into a weapon.

And so I eventually walked through the portal with my pseudo-Guardian due to tournament rules.

Achmel reviving the Burning Souls seems painful, indeed. Congrats on making it through despite that! It was nice to read about how your careful clearing of the side rooms in the Throne paid off when you carefully parked the Venom Lords, and how after that you didn't die to cursed Lister.

'Passion' in a bow is so stylish, yes it is.

Congrats on the Deathless Pat and all the glory you've brought to Zisla!

I thought I should get this Act 2 NM update up now since I'm planning on playing some more today and didn't want the updates to get too far behind my progress.

I decided to clear all the false tombs, because it would be easier to level now than later. There were beetles everywhere so the experience gain was great! The beetles also graced Kiora and Gaile with their first stair trap. Fortunately, it wasn't a boss pack, so Gaile soaked the charged bolts like a champ and only needed a single purple pot.

We didn't have to run away from Ancient Kaa this time!

I don't remember ever having seen a Fire Tower in a false tomb before. At first, I ran past it into the room beyond. The room beyond was full of beetles, though. I portaled out just in time and came back from the waypoint. So this Fire Tower had to die. It took a long time. But then, with more space, the room full of beetles wasn't so bad.

Duriel was scary at first. He has a lot of hitpoints. I'd used plenty of thawing potions beforehand. He mostly focused on Gaile while I fed her healing pots and put hydras everywhere. Does Duriel not charge anymore in 1.13 or was I just lucky?

Kiora and Gaile retraced their steps. They slew the demon queen Andariel and triumphed over Duriel once more. The demons fought more fiercely, but the cultists had also become stronger. Gaile and Kiora remembered that they had already done these things, not even that long ago, but no one else did. People in town greeted them as if for the first time. Even Cain, who had a reputation for knowing things, did not remember. There was one exception, however, though it didn't really bring much joy: Khalim's eye looked at them knowingly, unblinking.

I did decide to wield the orb (it's a holy snow cone of Zisla, ok?) and Rhyme in a bone shield. Resists are so important. Things are progressing nicely, still on /p5.

Witch Doctor Endugu was an epic fight. He would not stay in the blizzard. He ran out of the room into the hallways, so Gaile and Kiora also had to deal with the poison traps. It was rough for a while, but we got him eventually.

Dear lord progress is slow. I haven't found any usable weapons except a Katar with the lowest possible +fire damage roll.. While fists of fire is quite good, I'm hesitant to put loads of points in it so I can buff up phoenix strike a bit more at higher level, so my damage is mediocre.

I'm currently 21, and expect things to speed up drastically at 30. Just finished the Sewers.

If I live long enough, which is a big if, I plan to use Crescent Moon. I have the runes already, and I think it'll be an excellent weapon for Phoenix Strike :)
 
@Dazliare - I'm a fan of Crescent Moon as well. It's so strong for the runes needed! And it's so cool.... I haven't tried it for Phoenix Strike. I don't remember where I left my Phoenix Striker, actually. I guess I'll add that to the list of characters to dust off.

Things used to be simple: Always run away from hydras. But now that some of them are mine, I've lost that reflex. So I actually have to pay close attention to the way the hydras are facing so that I can dodge the right fireballs. That's an aspect of the council fights that I hadn't seen before; it's neat.

There were dolls on both floors of the Durance, so I kept it at /p1 for safety. This NM Meph map almost makes me wish I could rerun act bosses in this tourney. Almost, except that I have already done a gazillion Meph runs with other characters before. So really I am glad that the temptation isn't there.

Mephisto wasn't a problem. At first, I thought I had a good setup where I could hit him with hydras but he could only hit Gaile. She was taking a lot of damage though, so instead of using lots of purple pots to keep her up, I just moat tricked Meph again. The drop wasn't exciting, but that's ok.

Pandemonium Fortress is going to be a good place to shop for armor. I think I might be able to shop Artisan's Armor of the Whale, which should really help a lot when I stick some resist runes in it.

Doom Knights are immune to fire, and it was taking a long time to kill them with blizzard (uh oh), so instead of continuing on /p5 I went to /p3. Even though this is still just NM, thankfully there were no burning souls on the Plains of Despair. My resists are in the 40-50 range and I want them to be higher for Diablo. The City of the Damned map had both the Cathedral and two (!) Mawfiend Cages.

Gaile insisted on polishing the cathedral windows until they shone. Who knows why. So we didn't break them after that.

Larzuk put only one hole in it, but it's still very nice.

Hephaesto was holy freeze, fire enchanted, spectral hit. I tried to manuever such that Gaile and Kiora could shoot at him while he couldn't hit back, but he was just not cooperating. I guess he'd heard about what happened to Meph. Gaile ended up tanking as I gave her purple potions and cast blizzard many, many times.

I was very careful in the Chaos Sanctuary with all those fire immune Doom Knights. I made sure to have a tp up before popping any seals so that I could walk back from the waypoint instead of being surrounded. Diablo himself really loved casting his firestorm much more than the lightning hose this time. I'm glad I'm playing a ranged character.

Short update since it's late and I have to work in the morning :(

I'm past the initial "omg this is so slow" phase. I found a decent rare claw with fire damage that I can use:

Which has helped quite a bit. I'm also using goblin toe, though on P8, the crushing blow is negligible. I'm mostly hoping it will be useful against act bosses, and it's better than nothing until I can use some crafted equipment.

I finished the staff, so tomorrow's journey will take us into the cellars beneath the palace. I did have the easiest fangskin room I've ever had

On another note - can 3os 1h weapons spawn yet? I'm looking to make King's Grace, and don't really want to put it in a 2H unless I have to.
 
I ended up busy this weekend with a bit of non-Diablo 2 gaming (and a bit of leveling up a Strafer for no particular reason) but I plan to make the attempt to finish off those last two pesky quests, and give a bit of an overview/summary of the character.

In the meantime though I realized I should probably pick a talent to unlock in case someone decides to make a new character.

My initial thoughts are that Anima seems like a fun thematic choice.

I like the idea of having more of your God's abilities being slung around, even if they're not of your class (or if they are, overloading on it).

That's my tentative choice, any thoughts on that?
 
@Xios - Anima seems cool! It doesn't do much for me in particular, but I can see it opening up a bunch of gear options for others. I say go for it :)

Out into the jungles the group plodded, taking it quite carefully now as the wolves get overrun by a significant portion of boss packs now. I still like using them for now as it keeps the monsters away from Geras and they kill decently as long as there are no Stone Skin monsters around, but the bear is making more appearances now when we need a more durable front end.

Soon enough SSzark was down and the eye retrieved, Endugu quickly followed and the group moved on. They had to be very careful with Stormtree and like good responsible cultists, they used the river to thier advantage;

The grizzly stood his ground well and kept them all busy while Annor plucked away. I didn't want to see how quickly they would burn through the wolves and get to Geras all frenzied up, so this was our safest option by far.

Sarina's group pushed us all the way back to one of the wings (which we had thankfully cleared out beforehand), but we managed to block her in the door and take care of her pretty easily. The High Counil went much more smoothly than expected, and soon we had cruised through the Durance and were facing down Mephisto himself.

The fight was really easy. We just recast the bear when needed and let Annor do her thing. The drop was nice and colourful. and it even gave us a weapon that Malstrom approves of! Sureshrill Frost has FO charges on it, so is allowed by Malstrom. Not sure that Geras will use it much, but I'm sure it will see use somewhere.

@Xios - Anima does seem cool. It really opens up a lot of options for gear, especially higher ilvl crafts which often get charges, and things with nova/frost nova shield for some builds.

Kiora and Gaile continued through Act V NM at /p3, mostly because I was worried about fire immune guest monsters. Blizzard's mana cost is a problem right now, even though the damage is enough. I had to place hydras carefully around the tundra fortifications. Hydras always target the closest enemy, which was occasionally a little bit frustrating when they targeted the walls and towers. I had to pull things back farther away than normal and decided to skip more of those parts than usual.

There were Gloams in the Frozen River, which was good practice. Only one of the bosses was fire immune, so that was also good practice. Whenever I got hit by that lightning though, I thought to myself how dead I would be in Hell. I normally like to pop every Evil Urn that I find, but I didn't open them here. I learned that Gloam lightning bolts and Siren red projectiles are some of the few things that Hydra doesn't easily outrange. That will be very important to remember later.

I hadn't remembered how fast the guest monsters are. The warped ones and warped one shamans in Nihlathak's area were particularly difficult. Gaile sometimes shatters things with her ice arrows but we still needed to back off and explore in another direction while the game cleaned up some corpses. Gaile had a death to a cold enchanted, cursed lancer pack in the Ancient's Way because they were just so fast. Fortunately, after ressing her, I was able to clear more of the area so that I could separate them and take them out.

I filled the cube with extra potions for the Ancients. That was a good idea, even though I managed to separate them quickly and didn't need to reroll. Madawc was not a problem and went down quickly. Korlic was fire immune, so I carefully dodged back and forth in the corner filling the space with blizzards. I really liked the technical gameplay of that.

Talic was more difficult than he normally is with an act 2 merc. Gaile didn't make it easy since she would move to the side whenever I lured the whirler into a safer position. So we ended up kiting him around and taking pots as necessary.

Lister had holy shock, not a big deal. The Minions of Destruction are very fire resistant in NM, so I was proud when I successfully pulled them one at a time and kited them in circles with blizzard in one of the side rooms. Baal was kind enough to mostly stay in the center of the four pillars on the left side, so I almost always had a pillar to hide behind. He dropped the Salamander staff, which I could use, but, uh, not for Hell.

NM cows next
 
NM Cows are done. I tried them at /p3, but I pulled too many. I herded the giant pack of cows around for a while, but blizzard just wasn't damaging them enough. I wasn't in danger of dying just then, but I decided to S&E and come back on /p1. I really need to remember to respect NM cows; I've died there in the past from being overconfident. Kiora and Gaile were successful on /p1, though. It's neat how some builds like the cows to be all bunched up and other builds want the cows to be in a line. Hydra is the second one.

Just as before, after defeating Baal and being hailed as heroes, Kiora and Gaile felt the presence of their God. Zisla was pleased with their progress. But they weren't done yet, no. As they drifted back to the surface of reality, they understood what they had to do. This would be the final test. This time, the demons would be at their strongest, but should the cultists prevail, the reward would be unimaginable. All would be revealed. They would finally be worthy to know Zisla's plan for this world!

They really weren't surprised to be back at the rogue camp this time. With narrowed eyes, they set out to do battle.

I thought about picking up some rancid gas potions to prevent monster heal in situations like this, but then I reread the rules, and I don't have the Alchemy talent, so that wouldn't work. Blizzard took care of the fire immune fallen that I'd been worried about. After Blood Raven (who had a cold damage, knockback bow) I decided to rerun the Mausoleum and Crypt. It's allowed this time, and I might find a base and more runes to make a Passion bow for Gaile. I don't want to run it too much though, because then I might get tired and play badly and die.

I tried crafting a few caster boots. One turned out ok, with frw and two resists, but it didn't have goldfind on it. I'm still looking to upgrade my belt and boots and circlet, and I check Charsi and Gheed every time I'm in town.

Oddly enough, I've found a grand total of 3 set items and no unique items yet. Personally, I've never made it to act 3 without a gold item dropping, so we'll see how long the streak lasts!

Kiora and Gaile continued carefully through Hell Act 1, occasionally doing Crypt/Mausoleum runs when I didn't have time for a longer play session. I spent some time trying to get a good map for it with no luck, so I doubt I'll do much more of that. The best find so far is this:

I used my Normal imbue on an orb, but it wasn't great. I still have NM imbue, NM socket, NM personalize (haha), and Hell imbue to use if I need to. The tower is difficult and Countess is always fire immune, so I'm waiting for more points in Cold Mastery and a better bow for Gaile.

I had my first S&E to avoid death in the Tamoe Highlands to a fanaticism lancer pack. Gaile died instantly and I couldn't outrun them. Blarg.

I was really excited about that enhanced damage number at first.

Fire immune dark ones in the catacombs were difficult. An unsynergized Blizzard takes a long time to kill things, although the Cold Mastery is helping. The layout of the catacombs was incredibly nice though. I was able to go down to cata 4 with minimal encounters. I took 8 antidote potions to give myself... 30 poison resist! Andariel fell quickly to the hydras once again.
