Kiora and Gaile wanted to go to the Worldstone Keep to stop Baal. But to get there, they would need to pass a test. The barbarians hesitated to speak of it. The way was guarded by the spirits of their greatest ancestors. No outsider had ever survived to enter the Worldstone Keep, and the barbarians feared that this time would be no different. If only Nihlathak hadn't given Baal the one relic that guaranteed safe passage!

The cultists were undeterred, although they were a little uncomfortable about intruding on something so sacred to these people. The barbarians told them how frighteningly strong the Ancients were, and that Kiora and Gaile would have to face them in battle. They didn't have to worry about killing the Ancients; the ancestors' spirits were eternal. But they did have to survive and demonstrate their worth.

Gaile and Kiora traveled through more demon-filled icy caverns and over another battle-scarred tundra. At last, they reached the summit. Kiora felt an aura of peace here, not the passive kind of peace, but the kind that should not be broken, or else. Three golden statues of mighty warriors stood facing a central stone pillar covered with writing in a script that Kiora didn't recognize, and certainly couldn't read. But there was no need to. The voices of the Ancients flooded into their minds, explaining the trial they were about to face. And then the three statues came alive and attacked them.

After everything the barbarians had said, Kiora and Gaile had expected more of a challenge. Well, Kiora had. Gaile had been hurt in the battle and told Kiora that the strength of the Ancients was, in fact, legendary. Declared worthy, the cultists approached the gate of the Worldstone Keep, which opened to greet them.

The inside of the keep was magnificent, with delicately carved pillars and geometrically tiled floors. There were signs that the demons had been here already, but it was nowhere near as bad as Nihlathak's temple. Perhaps the demons had only just arrived, or maybe they'd ignored this place in favor of getting to the Worldstone faster. But Kiora and Gaile didn't really have time to admire the first uncorrupted architecture they'd seen since beginning their journey.

-----

They knew Baal was watching them. Whenever they would stop to rest even for a short while, they heard demonic laughter before the place they'd just been standing burst into flame (or crackled with electricity, or completely froze over, or was tainted by toxic fumes). Gaile wondered if Baal knew that his laughter gave the cultists fair warning to get away in time. Maybe he was just so pleased about the destruction that he didn't care.

Baal had claimed the lowest level as his throne room from which he could command his demonic legions to continue their assault on Harrogath, and soon, the whole world. He cackled madly as Gaile and Kiora advanced towards his throne, slaughtering the demon guards. He laughed as the guards died, laughed as he summoned more demons, and laughed when they died also. He hadn't yet joined the fight himself when he opened a portal and stepped through it, still laughing.

Kiora and Gaile followed right behind him. They stood in the Worldstone Chamber, the heart of the mountain. A narrow bridge over a seemingly bottomless pit led up to an immense floating crystal, the same kind of crystal that the demon's soulstones had been made of. Baal stood on the bridge facing the Worldstone. His many writhing tentacles etched demonic runes over its surface everywhere at once. He wasn't laughing anymore.

Kiora shouted a challenge, trying to disrupt the Lord of Destruction's ritual. When Baal turned his head slightly to look at them, the ground beneath Gaile and Kiora erupted with clutching, crushing tentacles. The cultists only barely managed to evade their grasp before Baal vanished. Unfortunately, the distant tentacles were still scratching unholy sigils into the crystal, rapidly turning it a bloodier shade of red. Kiora and Gaile were punished for their momentary inattention as a wide chevron of flame surged across the floor. Baal hadn't left. He'd teleported behind them.

The battle raged on. Baal concentrated on blasting Gaile with terrible magics while paying no heed to the hydras. Kiora stayed behind a pillar as Gaile dodged as best she could. Kiora wasn't just hiding. She placed the hydras where they could damage Baal while she remained out of his line of sight. He eventually caught on to her strategy though, and teleported behind her to unleash more deadly spells. Because Kiora had been watching Gaile dodge, she was also able to avoid the worst of Baal's attacks.

The hydras were relentless. Baal's form flickered for a moment, seeming to split in two, as he began to cast another spell. But he never finished it. The last of the Three had fallen.

Large chunks of the ceiling were falling, too. With the last of his strength, Baal was collapsing the mountain around them! Conveniently, Tyrael arrived, praised the cultists for their heroism, opened a portal to safety for them, and pronounced the Worldstone corrupted beyond repair. Kiora and Gaile stepped toward the portal, but this was awfully suspicious. Couldn't Tyrael have helped them in the battle earlier, or found a way to cleanse the crystal? They knew Heaven didn't like to interfere, but hadn't this been important? They looked back just in time to see Tyrael's spell light up the bridge with holy fire as he threw his sword into the Worldstone, shattering it.

Shocked, the cultists retreated through the portal. They didn't want to believe what they had just seen. They'd stopped the demonic incursion, only for Heaven to claim the prize at the last minute. What would happen to the world now?

Kiora and Gaile stood numbly in Harrogath, listening to the people hailing them as saviors and telling them how even the Ancients would be jealous of the songs that would be sung in their honor. The singing had already started; the great epic of their adventure was being told to all the survivors. No one would ever forget this, as long as they lived. Snow started to fall. when it landed on the flickering torches, the smoke smelled pleasantly of pitch, finally dispelling the stink of death that had been so constant.

Time seemed to slow down. The words of the songs became distorted, the glow of the torches blurred. And then, everything was dark, and still, and cold, and they were falling forever. Enveloped in soothing silence, they watched as the light of the world faded away to nothing as they drifted down into the deep.

Zisla was pleased. Kiora and Gaile were overwhelmed with joy and madness at being so near to their God. Zisla's presence was all around them, infinite, reality warping, time distorting. They were definitely not common cultists anymore. Zisla spoke to them:

ASKL...OPLI...GYKURL...OTPOKK...PGTR...PHUYRKJGH!

Which they understood to mean:

THANK YOU, CULTISTS, FOR THE GLORY YOU HAVE BROUGHT ME IN THIS INSIGNIFICANT WORLD. YOU HAVE COMPLETED YOUR FIRST LESSON ADMIRABLY. BUT YOU MUST GROW STRONGER NOW. YOU WILL WALK THE SAME PATH AGAIN.

The daylight burned Gaile and Kiora's eyes as the sudden return of gravity brought them to their knees. On soft grass and dirty mud. They looked up. Straight ahead was the rogue camp. And they knew, really KNEW, that no matter what happened, Zisla's will would be done.

Thanks for reading! The updates in Nightmare and Hell (if I make it there), will be much more gameplay-related since we already know how the story goes.

The gloves from Baal have more lightning res than my other ones:

@Dazliare Long may they live.

It seems I've been jinxed for praising the arrival of snakes in the Frozen River, as out of over a dozen rolls for Worldstone Keep level 2, all but one have had Serpent Magi (immune to poison) except one time where you guessed it, it was Burning Souls (also immune to Poison) instead.

Not all of my runs made it to the Throne, but of the ten or so that have, there has always been Burning Souls, Dolls or Serpent Magi. I assume it'll be possible that of the three monster composition I'll eventually get one without a Poison Immune, assuming there's no sort of hidden programming that pairs immunities or specific monster pairings. There's eleven guest/natural monsters, three of which are Poison Immune. So in theory it shouldn't be impossible, if perhaps a little unlikely that I'll get my ideal Throne room.

Still not sure exactly what I'll try to do when I get there but we shall see. So far I've essentially added the Worldstone Keep to my run rotation at the very end. We'll see what comes of it.

Geras is back!

Act 2 started with a trip down into the sewers, and the eventual death of Radament. He took some time (and some wolf recasts) to wear down, and we've noticed that boss packs in general are noticeably more difficult and dangerous than before.

The Maggot Lair was sloooooooow. Tons and tons of wolf recasts to keep them on the front lines, and lots of teleporting (with our TP staff on switch) to get Annor situated properly. We did finally make it through the hordes of maggots and killed their Queen.

Fangskin didn't let us too far into the room, but with the Ravens blinding everything Geras and company were able to kill him without incident. The Arcane Sanctuary was another slow ride as we drew both Ghoul Lords and Spectres, and their resistance to physical attacks made it up to Annor to basically kill them on her own. Don't get me wrong, she does a good job, it's just a bit of a slog to wait for her to plink each monster individually. Luckily though, we found the Summoner on the 2nd branch, so they left half of the AS uncleared and headed straight for the true tomb.

Now if I thought the Maggot Lair or Arcane was slow, boy was I wrong! Ghosts and Unravellers galore made progress all but grind to a halt in here. As we progress through NM and monsters start gaining physical resistance, it's becoming exremely evident that we need a source of elemental damage pronto. It also doesn't help that Gera is doing basically no dmamage right now, and essentially just acts as a bad version of PMH. Ah well, we will see what happens!

Luckily we found Duriel's chamber pretty early on in the clearing, so we decided to forego the rest of the tomb and just go after the big bug.

vqb0F4H.jpg

He vaporized the wolves pretty much instantly, so we switched to the Grizzly for the fight. The most important thing was keeping Annor out of his HF range so that she could mantain a decent attack speed. Duriel pinned the bear against the wall, which kept him distracted as Annor and Geras (though that was mostly just for show) could valiantly fill his back with arrows. His drop was quite colourful, though it had nothing in it which tempted Malstrom, so the team moved on.

Cultist of Zisla

Talents: Maleficium, Specialist, Charm Expert, Boon

Skillwise: I'd have Necro Curses, Bone Armor (and all temporary buffs) and Poison Dagger/Nova. Note Zisla doesn't have access to Poison or Corpse Explosion so I can't spend corpses. None of the off class skills are readily available as oSkills.

Itemwise: Goldfind, Kraken Shell Armour, Squid (hint hint) Dark, or Whale in name, Magic Damage Reduced, +Curses, +Skill I can use. All Runewords with two of Mal+ Runes. Those are all the activators. The problem for my Merc is very few of those appear on weapons or are very hard to find/make.

I knew going in that the easiest/best choice would be to have taken Necromancy for access to summons/bone magic but I wanted to stick on theme. Humorously (humerusly?) enough I don't think Bone Magic would have resolved this alone however as I believe Achmel is Magic Immune as well.

I think the most obvious solution will be to gear up my Merc, Personalizing a weapon if necessary to unlock it, as I haven't burned any of those yet.

Edit: I was just perusing Runewords, perhaps a Passion (mostly thinking for my Merc) would be a good tech choice. Bonus damage to Undead, unlocked via the Lem giving Gold Find. Will have to give this a serious consideration.

@Xios

What about personalizing a Crescent Moon and using decrepify so you don't die in melee range? Just for big poison immunes and Baal. The CTC static field would make short work of most anything, though it will be hard to hit

If I'm going to use a weapon myself it'll definitely need to have Ignore Defense, as my Attack Rating is awful, and I can't readily gear swap to remedy this.

One problem is that my stats are very greedily skewed and I have minimal Str/Dex so if I made a Runeword weapon for myself it'd probably have to be on a suboptimal weapon. I don't have the Dexterity for a Phase Blade, as an example.

I think I could piece together a Passion for my Merc, I know I have some good 4os base bows lying around. Maybe I'll see how well that kills the Poison Immunes on the walk over to the Throne and see if it could be enough.

Someone else may jump in here, but Crescent Moon has CtC on Striking, which I don't think has to actually "hit" to proc, but I could be wrong. You also don't need the damage or speed of a phase blade - a crystal sword or other low requirement sword will do just fine

I believe the difference you're referring to is "On Striking" versus "On Attack" in which the former means you Attack and successfully Hit, while On Attack is simply when you launch the swing.

Deleting my Necromancer "Wicular" from the table, he somehow continued to walk with the living and the dead.

That was the first one I saw, and I think 100 is the max. Praise be to Zisla! Gaile is also wearing armor of the whale, with 80ish life.

My resists in NM were ok, except for poison at -8. I've never been so afraid of Foul Crows.

Gaile solos Bishibosh:

Gaile had one death to a Multishot Mishapen boss in the Underground Passage. She wouldn't back away. Better her than Kiora.

Had some nice gameplay in the Tower when there was a tough goatman pack. Instead of breaking barrels right away, I used them as obstacles to help in the fight. The Countess was lightning enchanted and dropped Ort.

Gear and Skills so far:
Code:
Kiora:
weapon: Leaf
head: Ocher Circlet of Wealth
amulet: Amulet of Wealth
body: Leather Armor of the Whale
gloves: Cruel Clutches rare gloves (the ones from Normal Baal)
belt: Garnet Plated Belt of Wealth
boots: Death Tread rare boots (gambled from Anya)
ring 1: Raven Master rare ring (from Ormus)
ring 2: Fortuitous Ring of Greed

Gaile:
weapon: Eagle Nock rare bow (exotic from Normal tombs)
head: Viridian Circlet of Wealth
body: Hard Leather Armor of the Whale

Skills:
12 Hydra
11 Fire Mastery
9 Blizzard
7 Warmth
4 Fireball
2 Cold Mastery
1 Frozen Armor
1 each in icebolt, iceblast, glacial spike, frost nova, firebolt, enchant

I'm working on maxing Hydra now.

I wanted to get a picture of this thing, but I wanted to survive even more. In the Tamoe Highlands, there was an extra fast, cold enchanted lancer boss that took Gaile down quickly. I tried to run away, but the boss chased me all the way through the Black Marsh. I had to duck into the Hole and portal back to town to park it there. Then I came back from the waypoint and walked all the way around the other side of the Black Marsh to get back to where I was.

Thanks Gheed!

it's pretty good (ok anyway), and it casts Nova when it hits things. Cool!

There were lots of dark one shaman bosspacks in the Catacombs. One was a NDE from one of the packs being close to the stairs. I ran into unexplored territory to lead them away only to run into another dark one bosspack and also a tainted bosspack. I got the portal up just in time. Then I came back down from the waypoint and went in the other direction.

This was the multishot, fire enchanted tainted boss. I tried to get a screenshot of the lightning balls right before they disappeared, since Gaile and Kiora were only just out of range. The hydras weren't out of range =)

The dark one packs took awhile to kill, since there were so many of them. I would pull most of the minions away and kill them, and then go explore another part of the dungeon so that the game cleaned up the corpses. Eventually there were few or no minions left for the shamans to revive so there were no distractions for the hydras.

@SunsetVista - You've certainly earned all those likes with your wonderful write ups! Looks like you're enjoying the gameplay with her, is her Blizzard damage doing enough damage to drop those FI enemies?

Yes, so far it is, although I've done most of NM so far on /players 5 because it takes much longer on 8. The part where Gaile killed Bishibosh was the last part on /players 8.

Although the Ladder reset pulled me away I did manage to get some play time in with the Squid. I'll save the write up for when I get back home, but will tease it by saying that I ended up finding what is arguably a Best In Slot piece of equipment for my character.

Speculation abound!
