ø Old Gods of Chaos Tournament ø

@Dazliare - Grats! So you are in NM now? What's your score? I want the table to be right.

It was time for another Chaos Sanctuary try. Kiora and Gaile had a NDE to an extra strong, extra fast, might aura Urdar boss. I got hit once. If I'd been hit again I'd be dead. I tried to corner it on another platform. It appeared to regenerate after moving around a little, but when I ported out and came back, the game displayed its real hp again. Then it regenerated back to full normally as I was running for my life, so thank Zisla it stayed where we parked it. So, uh, be careful trying to moat trick things on the River of Flame.

Revenge! Not cold immune this time! Mwahahaha!

Gaile's got this. No problem.

Another exciting NDE at Diablo. He put 2 evil forces right on top of me and then blasted me with the lightning hose and the firestorm while I put up a portal. But... I had a tough time targeting it. Yeah! Gotta fireball those evil forces! While drinking all the purples! yeah! It was funny instead of tragic, since I did manage to click the portal and get out.

This is not upsetting. I am really glad to have made it.

Well, I had planned to use Crescent Moon, and started looking for a base for it. When I went to check the mods, I realized it doesn't look like I can use it :(

Kiora and Gaile steeled themselves and ventured out the Harrogath gates onto the fields full of terrifying unknown guest monsters of doom. What a friendly welcome from this very fire resistant Burning Dead Archer boss!
View attachment 4268

Rescuing the barbs was not that bad. There were both Slingers and Burning Dead Archers. Protip: stand behind the merc for archers but not for slingers. The slingers' javelins will pass right through and cannot hit the merc at all, so don't be there. Instead, be farther away off to the side. No problem.

Good job Gaile! She's racking up quite the kill count these days.

Today I learned from experience that the Blood Lords in the Crystalline Passage can be chilled, which was a great help. The waypoint was very far away from the Frozen River, so I checked the Glacial Trail to see if that waypoint was closer. Nope. So without a break, not wanting to reclear, Kiora and Gaile descended bravely.

Bone Mages, Lancers, Succubi. Yes! Looks like praying to Zisla gets results! Succubi in Frozen River are almost fire immune but not quite. But I could rarely get close enough to safely blizzard them. Gaile had a couple deaths to lancers and large groups of succubi; those projectiles hurt. I bet you can guess what happened to Frozenstein:

I decided to go take out Nihlathak first, before continuing to the Ancient's Way waypoint. Uh yeah, I'm running out of things to do before the Ancients. Yikes. This seemed weird to me, so I took a screenshot:
View attachment 4281
It has been a while since I ran Pindle, but isn't he very often fire immune? I know that the immunities are applied in a certain order and are capped at 2 in this patch. I could just be forgetting. So mysterious.

Halls of Anguish had Night Lords, which can thankfully be chilled, Death Brigadiers, and Scarabs. The Night Lords were the toughest part since I had to kill them fast or keep them chilled before they could Frenzy up and kill Gaile.

Halls of Pain had Razor Spines, Grotesques, and Blood Maggots. This will now be called Halls of Patience.

Halls of Vaught had Bone Archers, Night Marauders (very hard to see, never seen them before in fact), and... VIPERS.
-----
The susurrating sound of hissing snakes reached Kiora and Gaile's ears just as an expanding lance of vivid green vapor surrounded them. Their first instinct was to run, to get out of the choking poison. But they couldn't move their limbs. Was it a paralyzing venom? No, they could still blink. The poison cloud drifted through them, bringing with it an eerie silence as they stood motionless and let it pass by. As soon as they could take a fresh breath, the cultists were able to walk again. And they understood, felt it as an undeniable certainty, that Zisla had just spared their lives.
-----

In a shocking turn of events, lightning enchanted Nihlathak was defeated offscreen by a pile of hydras.

I’ve been following this tourney, but wasn’t going to join because I was focused on the untwinked 99er project. Now that I’m getting to higher levels with both 99ers, I think this will be a nice project to have as a break when I get bored with Baal or CS runs (and eventually Nihlathak).

First off, congrats to @NanoMist and @Xios for being the first to complete Hell with cultists. And good progress by @SunsetVista, @Dazliare, @Pb_pal and others for the good progress.

I am hoping to make a couple cultists from the same God to take advantage of Legacy, which is for me one of the more interesting features of the tourney by makes the various skill and gear limitations more manageable. I also want to try some skill combinations/builds that I haven’t used during my 7x7 project (which I also need to get back to write ups on).

My cultists will worship Chimaera. I figured there would be more flexibility with gear due to colors allowed, and the various elemental skills available should allow for good options across classes. As explained below, it may have been a mistake because I don’t fully understand the color display mechanics, particularly for rares or socketing blues.

* * *

So meet Cat, whose talents are Boon, Charm Expert, Egyptian Descendent and Pride. The name was obviously chosen to make the Egyptian Descendent talent more useful through personalization. Pride is to allow high MF total as the first cultist in the Legacy. Boon opens up BoS, Fade (for boss fights and later difficulties) and Cloak of Shadows.

I have never made a fire trapper, so that was the main skill. I still haven’t settled on back up plan for immunes, although death sentries will certainly help in Hell once the first body goes down. She can’t use physical damage skills. With blue equipment, she could do Fists of Ice but I suspect it will be much too underpowered to be reliable (even with decent damage claw and venom buff). She may not make it that far, so we’ll see.

She’s currently in A2, just completing the staff and ready to head into the palace. I decided to play her with full clears for Normal and using a Cold Rogue for the duration. I decided the Legacy will worship its God under a modified single pass approach: each cultist can choose 2 areas per difficulty to run multiple times. Everything else will be single pass only (although not super strict for tagging WPs before a break, etc).

A1 was pretty straightforward, punching things until the first ruby fell. 2os scepter found in the Cold Plains saw her through all the way to the Catacombs. Countess was surprisingly easy with a weak wake of fire and the scepter. The quest reward was a fire rogue, who was quickly replaced with Meghan, a cold rogue.

Cat completed a full set of 5 chipped topazes in the underground area for Black Marsh. The Countess was very generous. The Ral went into a superior 3os hunter bow with chipped sapphires on either side for Meghan. The first s/u was the Dragon Chang, which is purple and therefore allowable, but not as useful as the gemmed scepter.

She found a 1os Claymore in Catacombs 2 and decided to go with higher for the encounter with Andy. It was easy and Andy fell after running through Wake of Fire traps for about a dozen laps around the blood pool. (She forgot to socket the Claymore with a chipped ruby for the fight and technically should not have been using wake of fire. But I hope everyone is okay with that because she had less damage when swinging the Claymore as a result .) Nothing useful in the drops.

Progress through A2 was also uneventful if slow going. She ran straight for the cube, bought a 3os breast plate and cubed up some chippies. Still only 2 flawed topazes, but oddly emeralds are the main focus, as the Safety craft will probably be needed to get a wearable amulet and useful belt (now she is wearing a sash of frost nova or something similar that displays blue). Radament fell and then she found a useful pair of set boots (Hsarus) when finishing off the Sewers. I suspect the fire resist will come in handy for Diablo.

She finished the surface areas and all underground and has completed the staff. Cubing spree with rings and amulets led to nothing and she’s burned through all her gold with no good circlets to show for it. The next focus will be a weapon upgrade for Meghan.

Here is the problem I am having trouble with the color change. I gambled a nice set of rare boots part way into A2. But I can’t really see the color shift in the inventory display clearly. They appeared to be identical in color to some boots of wealth that she’d gambled (and accidentally sold :(), so it appears the of Fortune suffix controlled the display color.

I wanted to confirm so I looked at the links in the first post, including the explanation in the tourney that @Pb_pal ran: < This gets slightly more complicated in rares and crafts when there are multiple prefixes and suffixes, but there remains a hierarchy there as well; suffix 1, suffix 2, suffix 3, prefix 1, prefix 2, prefix 3.> But I can’t figure out which affix displayed is suffix 1. Is it the one listed last? Several rare weapons rolled with +poison damage as the last affix listed and appeared to display green.

But I am not sure and don't want to make mistakes since color of gear is such a key part of the build. She still hasn’t gambled any other decent MF boots, so any help on figuring out whether she can wear them would be appreciated (and generally how to figure out how rares display, as I’m sure belts, gloves and other gear will still start dropping that I’d want to use).

Welcome to the tournament.

Unfortunately as someone who didn't take part in the colour tournaments and didn't use it for my build I'm not very well acquainted with the nuances of how colours are created. So I'll leave that to someone who is more knowledgeable so I don't lead you astray.

That being said, with the prospect of potential new players I should probably pick my Talent to unlock so that we have the full range of options. I'm going to go with my initial pick and choose Anima because I like the flavor feel of it, although my other choice might have been Eccentric Equilibrium for the set collectors.

So if you're around @Mezion if you could update the original post that'd be appreciated.

@Dazliare - I went back and looked at the rules too, because i thought I remembered something about mana per kill being allowed... but it's only on rings and amulets. Darn. =(

@PhineasB - welcome and good luck! I think I have a list somewhere of which affixes grant which colors, but I don't know for sure which ones take precedence.

edit: here's what I've got, it shows the affixes which give colors:
http://diablo3.ingame.de/diablodb/affix_index.php?lang=en&version=lod&patch=111
and is one of my favorite things to link because it is amazing.

Welcome to the tourney, @PhineasB . Wake of Fire is very strong in normal and early nightmare, but the damage tails off as you get into the latter stages of the game. My blade fury felt even weaker against fire immune monsters, but it is decent enough to take down monsters one at a time. Your secondary skill options are a bit more limited, and I'm not sure how effective Blades of Ice/Phoenix Strike(minus the lightning) are. Looking forward to the rest of Cat's journey!

Ready for attempts at the Ancients? Yeah? Okay, here we go. First, anything cursed or holy freeze is a no go. That already leads to a lot of town portals. Second, if Gaile dies it's over. More portals, more gold down the drain. Unfortunately Gaile just wanted to stand and shoot. She didn't want to run around and separate them. That is really frustrating.

Looks like we got a good attempt here:

Got him! And now Talic:
View attachment 4286
Talic killed Gaile pretty fast, but I thought I'd be fine. I kited him through blizzards. I was running out of mana, so I swapped to the Insight on my weapon switch (it's made in a staff that has +1 enchant on it, so with pyromania and specialist I can use it) that I made just for this situation. Wielding Insight takes my resists negative, so I haven't used it much. So Kiora is running around, dodging whirlwinds, dropping blizzards. Talic never turns blue. He makes the getting hit noise and sometimes the getting hit with cold animation. His health never changes from the damage Gaile did to him at first; it never goes down, but it never goes up either. The text doesn't say he's cold immune, and Kiora has 16 points in Cold Mastery, so I should be able to damage him. I'm not getting hit, so it can't be leech from his weapon. WTF is going on here? I see that Spectral Hit and Magic Resistant give him lots of extra resists, but it doesn't say immune. Maybe, even with the Cold Mastery, I'm doing so little damage that it gets ignored due to rounding? Has anyone else ever experienced anything like this? I am seriously upset.

But not dead. I had to abort that run (WTF) but I gave it a few more tries. I didn't get a setup as good as that though, just more cursed and instantly dead merc rolls. So, I get to take a break and think about this. =(

Nightmare has gone quite well so far. The one big thing I'm noticing is when I do get hit, I get hit pretty hard. Cloak of Shadows has seen a lot more use as such. Crypt and Mausoleum are two highlights, though nothing interesting dropped to speak of. Our first interesting drop was this:

View attachment 4287

Manald Heal of course! Most unfortunate that I can't use it, so I vendored it. The next interesting bit dropped from a random Shaman Boss:

View attachment 4288

I can use it because of MDR. The eth/repair combo is just additional style points :)

After that, I decided to use a few sets of crafting materials in search of better gloves and boots. My ideal gloves will be a blood craft with martial arts and IAS. Alas, the two pairs I crafted were junk. Fortunately, Xiu-Matesh was looking down upon us when we tried for boots:

View attachment 4289

Quite nice! With those boots, I have max resistances even without Fade, which gives peace of mind.

And finally, a nice 4 socket bow dropped, which was immediately turned into this:

View attachment 4290

This is usable because it has fire damage, and my energy is exactly equal to double my level. Amplisa's damage increased sevenfold with this, and she absolutely murders enemies now. We're turning into quite the duo :)

@PhineasB - Welcome! Those boots are most certainly yellow, go for it! :)

Good progress to everyone else!

Talents: Charms Expert, One With Nature, Pride, Specialist[/highlight]

We decided not to let to first inherently "Malstrom-approved" S/U (ie. not personalized for approval) go to waste, and make things a bit safer for Geras while we're at it. So we took the Sureshrill Frost we found from Meph onto his switch along with this shield(the charges allow me to use it):

YIrmO6Q.jpg

As you can see it has greatly improved his resists situation, gives him acces to Terror, and also gives him CBF (and hit freezes target!) from the Sureshrill. So the plan for now is to keep this setup as his main for walking around, and he will switch to his bow when needed (or if he finds a bow that can actually do damage...).

Well in true fashion for a druid summoner, it literally took one step out of the Pandemonium Fortress for things to grind to a halt thanks to this nasty Spawner pack. Spawners are just bad news for us overall, as this group has pretty low firepower to begin with. Eventually though we did kill the pack and find the entrance to the Plains of Despair. Eager to get away from the spawners we took the exit straight away and ran into... more spawners! Took a while to slog through them again, but eventually we did manage to find and kill Izual.

Onward to the City of the Damned and you guessed it, spawners! One thing we learned from all these spawners is that I think it's time for the wolves to finally go into retirement. So we switched to the bear full-time, and that helped our kill speed a little bit, but more importantly he is a much better tank so it's made us safer.

We finally found the stairs down into the inferno and entered the River of Flame. SPAWNERS!

No, I'm not kidding. 4/4 areas had spawners this time around, and the RoF drew maggots as well. Needless to say it was slow going down there. Slowly but surely we made our way to Hephasto. He was Cursed, Spectral Hit and had Might, so Geras was more than happy to hang back and let Annor take him on. After all this slogging Geras plopped Meph's soulstone into the Hellforge and smacked it a few times.

cnQ8pXa.jpg

YES!! This is probably the absolute best case scenario for Geras on his HF drop. Malstrom allows us to make Harmony, finally giving the team a decent PI solution and just a good weapon for Geras in general, something he has been lacking for as long as he can remember. We still need to find a good base for it, but that will come with time I'm sure.

So with renewed spirits the group set off and entered the Chaos Sanctuary. OKs everywhere made it slow going always laying decrep on the bear, but as long as we kept Annor out of it then she could pluck away successfully from the back end while the bear tanked. Vizier went down easy and couldn't even budge the grizzly's health bar. De Seis was a peach after leading his minions out of his aura's range and dispatching them first. For the Infector, we used a charge from our teleport staff to jump the gap back into the main "room", then led the group out into the open where they were more easily taken care of.

So finally, after the longest time I think I've ever spent in A4 NM, we hit the last seal, nabbed a convenient Resist Fire shrine right by the pentagram, and went for Diablo. After some very careful positioning, we managed to get the bear in a spot where D's Lightning Hose couldn't touch him.

fQlCqkv.jpg

This still left him vulnerable to firestorms of course, but as long as we recast him quickly enough he could hold Diablo's attention and the rest of the group could whittle away. The drop had nothing worthwhile, though maybe the Nightsmoke could be peronalized and upped if we're desperate at some point.

Onwards to Harrogath!

This session dropped quite a few interesting items, the first of which was this. Xiu-Aethera can't use it, but perhaps a future cultist can (Nokozan Relic)

Andariel was quite easy, as expected with a character that can readily dish out meteors. The amulet rolled lots of resists, but no usable stats, so I unfortunately vendored it. The real winner here is the club. It has Crushing Blow, Deadly Strike, and Open Wounds, which while not great in NM on P8, will be quite good in Hell and for act bosses. It will also see use should I ever decide to try a shapeshifting cultist under Xiu-Matesh

Finally, one of the corpses dropped this, though I don't particularly expect to use it.

A truly unfortunate death, so close to the well! Quite the tragic image.

@Dazliare - sorry about the deeds. =(

I got my internet working again, so I think I will run a few more Crypt/Mausoleum with Kiora. If Gaile has a few more levels maybe she won't die so fast at the Ancients. And maybe I will find something that can give her lifeleech.

As Cat descended the stairs into the Harem level, she realized that Jeryn might have taken offense. He was the ruler, but she hadn’t really paid attention as he opened his soul and shared his secret. She had been distracted. Since deciding to rid the world of the Prime Evils, she had begun to doubt everything she had thought about herself and the world.

Is there actually a God? Sure, she had gone to the temple with her parents every evening as a child. She had been to temple school weekly and learned about the power of fire, ice and magic. She wore red and blue to honor the God. But she was simply being a dutiful daughter. She had never really believed.

That’s why she had become an Assassin, training her body and mind to stretch her natural abilities and avoiding the temptation of channeling the elements or magic. She viewed the mages as charlatans, at risk of corruption as they searched for some higher secret. She had believed in herself, her own abilities. Mortals must gain strength to protect themselves and impose justice on the chaotic world, she had always believed.

But . . . seeing the terrible pain and anguish that evil powers could wreak on innocent people and the natural world, perhaps there is some other power that protects and strengthens those who seek to stamp out the evil.

“Can a mortal really stand up to such evil,” she wondered aloud as she looked at the dismembered corpses of the women who had surely been beautiful before whatever befell them . . . befell them. “I have overcome evil forces beyond those discussed during my training by the Order. Maybe Chimaera is real after all. Maybe the God is protecting me as I challenge the Prime Evils.”

Cat, Cultist of Chimaera, and Meghan to the Cold Rogue, Lvl 30
Talents: Boon, Charm Expert, Egyptian Descendent, Pride

Cat finished A2 and has made it to LK in A3. Arcane sanctuary was annoying, as expected, due to the narrow paths for WoF. But it led to an amulet that Cat can finally wear due to MDR (and nice MF to boot):

Code:
Grim Eye
Amulet
Required Level: 12
Fingerprint: 0xe9583eee
Item Level: 19
Version: Expansion 1.10+
+1 to Strength
+13 to Mana
Cold Resist +16%
Fire Resist +19%
Magic Damage Reduced by 1
20% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items

Canyon of the Magi was fun to clear, with Darkglow dropping. First tomb was the true tomb. Cat dropped to p1 for the big bug, but it was a much easier fight than expected. Running in circles while dropping WoF was pretty straightforward – he didn’t even hit her or Meghan once. Drop was not helpful. Stormguild dropped (MDR), so she switched to a chipped ruby socketed scmitar.

Four of the remaining tombs had unravellers, but the rest of the act wasn’t any trouble. This image of the fight with Kaa shows how the fights unfolded.

Meghan got a slight armor upgrade, now socketed with two flawed topazes.

View attachment 4323

It’s slightly less MF, and the rest of the mods don’t really add much, but it felt stylish. Either way, it will be a nice option for the next cultist to wear at lvl 7.

A3 was pretty easy and WoF made short work of the flayers that can sometimes be annoying. No useful drops in the act so far, except Cleglaw's sword (red hue).

Cat may treat LK as one of the two areas for rerunning in Normal, per the restrictions I added for my cultists – a couple decent charms and some rubies and emeralds to cube up for crafting could be helpful. I’ve never run LK in Normal though. Theoretically, mid-level Shimmering GCs are possible based on area level.

Sorry for the deeds @Dazliare. May Xiu-Aethera smile upon your next cultist.

Good progress everyone else. @SunsetVista – I hope the leveling is smooth and makes the next attempt to summit Mt. Arreat a success.

And thanks @Pb_pal for the answer on the boots. She had managed to gamble another pair of boots of wealth, but the MF on those rares is better.

@PhineasB - thanks!

Leveling is going ok so far. Kiora and Gaile have made it to 84. I plan to go to 85.

New treasures:
This orb dropped like this, no gems needed! Wow!

Volcanic Eldritch Orb
Eldritch Orb
One Hand Damage: 18 - 50

+3 to Fire Skills (Sorceress Only)
+2 to Blizzard (Sorceress Only)
+75 to Mana

The mana bonus is AMAZING. I no longer need blue pots for hydra at all in most fights, and I can cast many more blizzards before needing a refill.

And this is a great treasure, letting me keep my resists decent while wielding the above orb:

Garnet Ring of Greed

Blizzard with now 17 Cold Mastery is a silly thing.

Man, this is an awesome concept, and a well-conceived tourney. It's quite unique. and open ended, until this...

>9. Replays are allowed (and even encouraged) but not of act bosses. Any other area is fair game.

Can't run Mephy? That kinda takes the wind out of my sails for this tourney. It's so open-ended - why this restriction?

Anyway, I might yet join. I like everything about it, other than not being able to re-run bosses.
