Vorbiss' Level 99 Sorceress Contest

Vorbiss sent the gear for the Sorceress and she was started March 10th at 6 A.M. Eastern Standard Time (-5 G.M.T.). I figured I'd make a thread to post up memorable events, level landmarks, etc.

For those who don't know about the contest, Vorbiss picked someone (me!) out of volunteers to accept some exceptionally good Sorceress gear (cold Sorceress gear, to be exact) and in return, they were to try to achieve the lofty ranks of level 99 within 75 days of starting. Not only that, but once the character reached level 85, they had to be using all of the gear sent. What's more, their main skill was to be Blizzard. So, this is the thread about Aerien, the hopefully level 99 to be Sorceress.

Skill planning was very, very simple.
20: Ice Bolt
1: Warmth
1: Frost Nova
20: Ice Blast
1: Static Field
1: Telekinesis
20: Glacial Spike
1: Teleport
20: Blizzard
20: Cold Mastery
5 Points left over. I was going to get a cold shield with these skills and put a few points into it, but I'm starting to lean towards putting 1 point into Frozen Armor and using the other 4 points to get Energy Shield.

Stats are also very simple.
Strength: Enough to wear Stormshield.
Dexterity: Enough for maximum blocking (with Stormshield)
Vitality: Everything else
Energy: Base

Gear: Most of this was specified by Vorbiss, the rest was picked out from his stashes. I'll give reasons for the ones I picked.

Vorbiss specified:
Death's Fathom
Ormus' Robes
Nightwing's Veil
Cold Rainbow Facet x 3
Arachnid's Mesh
Cold Skills Grand Charm x 6

Picked by me:
Stormshield
I chose Stormshield for obvious reasons. It has PDR, resists, excellent blocking, and is all around one of the best shields in the game. I also planned to put a Cold Facet in this (as originally there were to be four provided) but as that changed, I figure this will be an excellent place for the Um rune I found today (see below). It would take more strength to use, but less dexterity to get max blocking. It's worth the tradeoff.

Sandstorm Trek
The added Strength and Vitality both come in useful and it provides excellent poison resist. The FHR is also a great mod that will prove its worth, as I get block-locked a lot.

Laying of Hands
I was trying to decide, between the Sets and Uniques, what the best gloves would be for this build. Oddly enough, only one stat made me decide on these, which was the +50% Fire Resist. Looking through, I realized none of my gear has any fire resist. This will be greatly needed. I also found another use for these, detailed below.

Tal Rasha's Adjudication
Another fairly obvious pick. +2 skills, added life and mana, lightning resist. I prefer it over Mara's for Sorceresses.

For rings, right now I'm using Wyrms rings for more mana. I haven't found any SoJ's, so those aren't an option. I'll probably replace these with rares or uniques when I find them.

Now that that's done, on to the questing.

Well, let's start off by saying this is going to be a dull thread. At first I figured I'd be posting about progress questing at first. Well, day 1 an MP game finished Act 1 Normal to Act 1 Nightmare. So that went right out the window. Day 2 we finished Act 2 Nightmare and got up to the Countess in Act 1 Hell. 2 Difficulties gone in two days. A good start.

Today, I decided to try the Countess alone. Note, they're cold immune. Well, after trying to get my merc to kill them one by one about 20 times, I ran out of gold. Then I noticed I had a Buriza in my stash from the MP game yesterday. I equipped the Buriza and then realized I also had Laying of Hands in my stash, as I'd been using Frostburn as long as I could. Well, as the countess is a Demon, the +350% damage to demons worked out very, very well. I've decided that for cold immunes I'm going to keep a decent projectile on my weapon switch. I haven't decided which, but as long as my merc can tank a little, this should work fine. It took about 20 minutes on /players8, but I killed the countess and her minions. She dropped me a Tal rune, one of her minions dropped an Um. I think it was profitable.

So, more updating later.

Let me see, you must be ~ level 70 - that means you are exactly 1/92 of the way to lvl 99

Keep us posted, looks fun - I think you will make it (just a few weekends of 12 hour gaming).

lvl99 in 75 days is kinda impossible. the highest confirmed 1 that was started in 1.10 is 96 (buster LF zon, anybody else higher?) and 1.10 has been out alot more than 75 days (try 200+...) but i guess if you play non-stop and forget what the sun looks like for a few months, you might do it.

So ah what happens if you don't achieve the lvl 99 sorc goal and have to give the equipment to the next person? Does that mean that the Stormshield with the cold facets has to go with the other equipment?

By the way what clvl have you made it to?

Good hunting, I hope you have ample time to level that sorc to clvl 99.

I'm assuming you are planning to do Baal runs in order to level up? anywhere else?

and... how can you do this with cold skills only?

Well, I highly doupt it is impossible to reach lvl 99 without sacrificing your own life, but good luck anyhow!

That was pretty slick switching to the buriza. I think you can do it, if you ditch real life for the time being. I wish you nothing but luck!

If you don't reach 99 in the given time are you only sending the items or the whole char to the next player?

the next guy gets the items, not the character file, as vorbiss wanted.
this thing is only to see who has the least social life!

Whew, thats quite a goal to accomplish, sounds pretty good so far and i wish you the best of luck on achieving the big 99

Yep, if Liter Soul don't succeed, the items will go to the next guy, an so on till someone finally do it. If the time is extremely unsufficient, the limit may be slightly extended. ;)

BTW this will be a good way to see what lvling you can expect if you play non-stop with one char.

Good luck Liter, hope you'll make it and prove it is possible!

I would say that the 1/2 way point would be somewhere around level 97-98 or so (in terms of time spent) I think one is looking at well over 100 baal runs to gain a level at that level (on a players 8 game)

best of luck!!

chicken, if i were you, id stop playing D2 now. then when / if liter fails, you can restart D2 nd it will be a fresh adventure. if you just do MF runs for the month leading upt to your attempt, you reaqlly wont want to do that many baal runs...

clvl 75

Also, chickenofpower will be getting a try at it even if I do succeed. If I get to 99 I get to keep the gear, but I doubt I'll much want to play her after so long spent. At least I'll take a couple months off, give someone else a go at it.

Sorry, mate, but you ain't got time to be here... :p You have a Cold Sorc to LEVEL!! :D

Good luck and sleep well (not at all)
