Champion Redux, Blizz Sorc, and Emilio the A2 HF Merc, Lvl 93
As I was pushing Septimus to lvl 98 last November, I was thinking about what projects I'd take on when I finished him off. As I noted in my updates for him, I was also struggling for motivation to push him through the end. My tactic when that happens is to switch up to another character, to keep things interesting.
I ended up questing a twinked character through early game, but I also decided it would interesting to start another untwinked 99er to apply the lessons I'd learned with the prior seven. I'd always enjoyed the early game to gear up before the XP grind, minus the countless LK runs. So a Sorc it was!
I ended up spending most of November on Redux, quickly pushing her to NM Pindle with random gear. NM Duriel had been generous, and allowed the merc to up his leech and resists with Tal's mask, which was quite nice, and NM HF was a Lem. She leveled at Pindle to 70, and finished NM at lvl 73 before doing some Meph runs. Those produced a low roll SoVM and Tal's amulet, which allowed her to transition to Hell less than a week after I'd built her.
This just reinforced for me the value of pushing through Normal and NM as quickly as possible, with Eldritch / Pindle available to easily level up and Meph runs to gear up for Hell. After not liking the p1 experience with the Phaedrus, I went p7 and she was plenty powerful as a pure Blizz Sorc to handle things.
Redux then dropped to p1 and pushed through quickly to A5 Hell in a weekend, with a brief stop at AT to gain two levels. Along the way, she picked up a spectacular drop questing through in the Oasis:
AT yielded a Mal, but not much else, including two failed attempts to cube a Monarch for Spirit. We then zipped ahead to Meph, then HF (Mal), and then through to Anya rescue, which required 4 tries before we had a success due to Frozenstein challenges. She had also picked up a plain CV that got 4os in the cube and the first elite Insight option for the merc.
She then Pindled to lvl 89, with no notable drops other than a 43MF pair of War Travelers, and then switched to AT to lvl 92, picking up an Eschuta's for a major weapon upgrade (FCR and 3 skills), a 4os Thresher that replaced the CV Insight, and a plain Monarch in A5 that got 4os, which was her fourth try overall.
Then we made a brief stop in LK, with the hope of finding ingredients for HotO, and maybe CtA. LK had other plans though, with the Vex for HotO delivered within the first 100 runs, a Gul and Pul shortly following, and then at the end of the third hour of LK, a Ber. We then did some Meph runs, hoping for an upgrade (and dreaming of Arachnid's), with 15% Cold damage +3 Thunderstorm Ormus robes the only notable drop, and an interesting option to have in the arsenal.
I then decided to make CoH, instead of HotO, which was probably a mistake in retrospect. The +2 skills and resists were nice (and allowed her to take on CS (mostly) safely even without CtA. I think HotO would have so far outclassed Eschuta's, while SoVM was pretty solid compared to CoH, that the other choice was better the better one. Oh well, I had the Ber and decided I should use it! I had to choose between the two becuase I had only the one Pul, and needed to cube up Fals and Lems to get a second for the Um in CoH, leaving Redux without the Pul needed for HotO.
I then decided to test out CS, and she managed pretty well, picking up another Gul and Death Cleaver up to lvl 93, with only one death due to Vizier spanwing right on top of her. We did a few Meph runs off and on through the level, netting a Stone of Jordan.
This was all through the end of November, so less than a month since her creation. At this point, I got reengaged with the Druid, and she sat until early March when Septimus dinged 99. The lack of CtA was being felt so I decided another batch of LK runs was in order, and I could do those off-and-on as breaks from the characters I was planning to quest through. An hour or so one evening yielded a Gul, Um, and another Lem that allowed a Pul to be cubed, resulting in her HotO (37@ roll was nice).
She rested until early April, with a couple hours on a Friday evening resulting in a Sur, a Pul, and a Cold skiller with 20 life, as her first. She got several 30-minute chunks into June, mixing LK with Meph, with another Sur and only 2 Puls (plus a Burning skiller with Dexterity), and still needing a Mal/Ist or Gul/Vex/Ohm to complete CtA. I then spent several hours last weekend in LK, with a Lo dropping early (and not being especially useful
), followed almost immediately by a Mal. She also picked up a plain Lightning Skiller, giving her one of each skill tree. The next day a Gul fell, allowing her to cube up the ingredients and a nice +5 BO roll:
In all, Redux spent longer in LK than I had hoped, but I could have skipped Meph runs (which aren't really needed after that initial batch, but she has a great map) to LK and finished sooner. I estimate about 12 hours, although in fairness she picked up ingredients for Infinity, Fortiude, HotO and CtA in that time so was pretty lucky. I just made a CoH instead of Infinity.
She's had 9 deaths to date, most a function of being underleveled and undergeared (mostly resists). Nova explosions from MSLE NM Pindle, a H AT boss, and Hell Pindle were the first three; two 1-hit kills from amp'ed charging Pindle at lvl 88 were next; and then amp'ed mana burn Marauders in AT at lvl 91 and 92, same roll apes in LK at 93, and the Vizier spawn noted above were the rest.
Redux will very much be a on-and-off long-term project. But I've realized that I enjoy running 99ers for the MF and RF tourneys, as the XP progress is a nice additive reward for completing sets in those. I'm planning to finish up my 2H Melee Sept before turning back to Redux, and likely progressing my HC pally. But being to run CS with her when I only have short chunks of time available will be nice to have in the rotation.
