I swear by my Exile running Ubers. I carry the max resists from charms, rings and ammy(metalgrid) but no overstacking and I have no problem taking down meph with my Salvation aura. IMO the life tap from Exile (and Drac's) is as important as the resists. Yes the resists must be max (in my case 80 fire, 80 cold, 90 lite and 75 poison) however, I don't feel it's necessary to overstack when you have Salvation.

Well, it also depends on whether you get BOed. For example, I am running them with 1.4k life (no BO), and even if I can leech 2k life, it doesn't help if I get killed before I actually leech. At that preceptive, I need maxed resist rather badly since I need to make sure I last from 1 smite to another.
Finally, how much are you leeching also counts. If you are leeching more, you can be a bit lax on your resist.

You need max resists. A cheap way to achieve this is to take an elite 4os pally shield and socket with 4 pdiamonds. I had a 43 res sacred rondache that was 119 all resists with the gems. I used the same shield to make exile in after I was able to trade for the runes I needed. When you switch to exile, you need to adjust the gear you can (such as amulet, rings and charms) in order to reach max resists.
Another very important factor is max block. Make sure you have enough dexterity through hard points and plus dex gear to achieve 75% block. It's important to try to achieve max block using a worthy shield (one that has a high block percentage). If you try to achieve max block using a lesser shield (say an akaran rondache or targe), you will have to add allot more dex in order to reach the 75%.

Well, I have been reading this thread and have started to work on my smiter when I get burned out on MF'ing. There are a few things I would like to through out for consideration. Please bear in mind I am a dirt poor noob compared to the rest of you, so you will have to bare with me.
First off I haven't heard any one bring up Drakglow as an armor. It may not work for the Ubers, but it is sweat. If it was up'ed would it be viable?
A lot of people have been asking about how to deal with PI's. Why not use Passion to deal with them? It is cheap and gives you +1 to berserk, which I would think would be enough to handle the PI's through out the game and get out of any problems with IM.
In one of the earlier posts someone asked about using a Flesh Ripper. Would that be effective? (no one ever answered that question.
What about King slayer? That seems to me to be one hell of a rune word. Would it work on the ubers?
Then there is the whole question about spirit. Can it be used for more than just a switch shield? I have been using it on my hammerdin and just love it. But I am not sure if it would beat out a + res four socketed pally shield with pdiamonds.
Some of these questions may seem redundant, but I would like to kind of have them cleared up so I can get the most out of a poor man's build. It may also be useful to mention some of this in the next rev of the guide.

Darkglow has too little resist compared to most of the other options, and does not have any offensive mods. If you are broke, use smoke.
Passion works, but some people prefer to have something else on switch.
Flesh Ripper should work, although I never tried it myself.
Kingslayer is a bit expensive, given by how screwed the economy is. You just require a bit more for a grief, so why not save for it?

OK..........3 questions here i think!
1. What merc, if any, do you usually run for ubers? or do they mostly just attract unwanted aggro?
2. Extra skills points...got 20 in zeal/sacrifice/holy shield/fanata, 1 in smite and prereqs. at level 84, got 5 skill points left. Guide says to put points in defiance, but why? I'm imagining while running ubers you'll want either fanat, or resist aura, so is there any situation where you would want to run defiance with the few points you'll have in it? Where are the extra points best spent?

1. I don't use a merc for Ubers. My smiter does fine by himself. At best, a merc just dies quickly. At worst, he'll attract all 3 Ubers and their minions and they'll come swarming over you.

3. What do you do about physical immunes? I just did my first run collecting organsets, the desert one there with duriel, those dumb swarms are phys immune, made for a long run. What do you do for phys immunes? switch weapons? vengeance seems to do VERY little damage for some reason, i don't quite get it...
And anyways...just did my first uber tristram run, only died twice on meph, and ended up having to do baal and diablo at the same time, but i made it!
If you care you know my set up, skills, here it is..

There is a problem with grief + vengence. Your base damage that is used to calculate vengence is 31~35......, which sucks. I know for a fact that vengence with grief does a lot less damage than vengence with heaven's light.

-abut using passion for berserk against PIs.. I personally don't like berserk.. I almost always end up in near death situations when i berserk, and that is with the massive life barbies too...

I have never had a problem with berserk, but it depends on the situation. If you are getting mugged by 20 or more PI's then I could see how that could be a problem. When ever I have been in the Kaos Santuary or the throne of destruction berserk has been a total life safer. However, things may be different with the ubers. I don't know, I was looking at berserk from a general game play stand point.
The reason I suggest using passion is that it is cheap. According to the uniques list on this site azurwarth no longer drops in 1.11. So how can we get one in this ladder session? If I am wrong on its availability please correct me. I would love to have one. I have always had a special place in my heart for vengence.

Azurewrath certainly drops in 1.11,I have one on ladder this season as well. As for vengeance,I have tested it but it is not ideal. The physical part of azure's damage isn't that impressive and the fact that cold immunes are least likely to break with conviction makes it a non ideal choice. Don't let me be misunderstood,I am a fan of azurewrath, I just prefer it on elemental or fanatic zealots.

I read the replies here, just my opinion on resists and stacked resists. My Paladin has around 200 resists to all and he switches to salvation when fighting Meph. Then he has Fire/light/cold resist in the low 10ths (yes even with salvation) but I still have a very easy time killing meph. I do get Bo'd though, by my Barbarian on computer no.2 (if you do not have a second account/game/computer I do not see why you should not be able to ask a friend to bo you).
After meph is dead I switch back to fanat, uber tristram is a walk in the park.
