Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

Re: Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

I actually really hope I get farr again, he sounds fun!

I have some stuff saved up to make him weapons.

I was damn pleased with those boots from charsi in act 1 - frw, res, mf if I remember correctly, glad they made it through the act, blood boots could easily have overtaken em if they had been a little less rad.

Lookin forward to spear whirling at some point

Re: Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

Just a few words about the now-departed Beru: I started her and found her easy going in A1 norm and in particular found quite a collection of Envy jewels. I found two and put them in a cap and then just little bit later, I found a third (rare) one, which made me wish that I had held off for a 3-socketed body armor. So I reran the Mausoleum and Crypt at /players 8 a few times and found a fourth Envy to make a nice hat + body armor Envy setup which I figured would be switched to the merc in due course. She was level 21 when passed on, with single points all in the shadow tree up to Fade, Cloak of Shadows and Shadow Warrior and 14 unspent points. Two claws with chipped gems as her weapon block was better than any likely shield block at that point. She was free to follow traps or martial arts in the future at that point. Her imbue were boots but they didn't amount to much but she was fine and had no trouble with rerunning various areas in hopes of improving gear somewhat.

Re: Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

Current status of Antilles
I got him in the beginning of Act 5 as a rather sturdy Frost Zealot. He had healthy points in both Holy Freeze and Resist Cold with a single point in Zeal. This meant I could theoretically do something zaney and bypass Zeal making it a prereq instead of a power, but I chose not to, and first got Zeal up to 5 swings. Then I thought about the third power. Straightforward options were Sacrifice for more Zeal Damage or Holy Shock for a second damage source and shared Salvation synergy. Less straightforward options were Fanaticism for a big physical damage and Conviction for the ability to ignore AR (which would be nice given he had a Prayer merc, probably my only qualm with his set up).

I opted for Fanaticism, but not just for zealing. I wanted to make Antilles a Ranger hybrid. The idea for this came from the socket quest item I had been hanging on to, Coif of Glory. Palis really lack crowd control and in Hell I'm worried about cold immunes being a problem. So I was saving this helm for a zon as I didnt really get anything better to socket along the way. But I thought it could be just as good for a Ranger. However, I know that bow runewords outside of the Bnet only ones are rather craptastic, at least those that can be afforded. However, I noticed something I've never seen in a bow that would work with the concept of ranged crowd control, Passion. It's quite reasonably priced for 1.13c and has two key mods Hit Blinds Target and HCMTF. This really sold me on the idea of a Fanatic Ranger to backup Freezalot.

The Heart Carver drop threw a monkey wrench into the works. But ultimately I decided to stick with the ranger because A) that Heart Carver will be of much more use to a Barb and B) I really didn't like zealing with a Range 1 weapon, and so I thought a range 0 would be a big disadvantage. Besides, the HF damage I was getting wasn't that different than what the Heart Carver would give me, and with it being a relatively slow Dagger class weapon, it didnt have any IAS advantages going for it. So in the end I socketed the Coif of Glory and personalized a pair of Sander's Taboo.

Before passing him on I did attempt a couple crafts. Unfortunately I forgot about the rounding of ilvl/2 fractions. So I made a point to level up to 49 and gamble lvl 53 items only to get a Hit Power Belt and Blood Gloves that both have only 2 additional mods. I also had really crappy rune luck. No Sols to make Lore, and no Hel runes. His scepter is just begging for resocketing as it has +3 Holy Freeze and two sockets for Strength. The crushing blow would be great. It's currently got two Iths in it, which I'm sure were very helpful in the early game.

Overall I think he'll be a strong character no matter which direction he goes from here.

Re: Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

Sounds good, Brak.

I'm currently playing an untwinked shock/fanaticism zealot... just reached hell with him. It's a good combination, and I imagine Holy Freeze/fanaticism will be as well.

Re: Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

With the pesky MFO behind us, Biggs is itching to hit the mountain running.

I'm assuming we're spoiler free on Beru given her passing, but just in case somebody doesn't want to know what other players are thinking about...
To continue Beru's history leading up to her untimely demise, I received her at the Kurast docks, greatly appreciating the time purplelocust and WoRG had put in. She was outfitted with 5 envy jewels now, and a tri-gemmed bow (hunting bow if I recall?). The mercenary was a town guard carrying an ethereal malice Voulge. A minimum of points had been invested in the shadow tree, leaving her a very capable blank slate.

I didn't have the experience with MA sins to make a wise choice there, so I selected lightning sentry and sent her down that path. With a capable merc, a bow putting out very good poison and elemental damage, and the occasional lightning sentry thrown down, there was really nothing that gave them any trouble on /p8. Mana constraints slowed things down a bit, but using a shadow warrior with LS selected took care of most of that - I was just able to throw out a couple whenever she got lazy. Really the bow damage was doing the job nicely and LS was dedicated to larger packs.

In the flayer jungle she got an exciting drop with a unique amulet. I was hopeful it was an Eye of Etlich, but nokozan's FHR and +max fire were still a welcome upgrade. Otherwise, Ormus's quest reward was useful though not special, and she got several charm upgrades (leaving the act with an inventory jammed mostly with elemental, resist, and life charms). Mephisto was put away with ease, but she was running low on time and couldn't get in the 10 runs. The only potentially useful drop from him was a Sigon's Guard. While I assumed she'd eventually go claw-claw, if somebody wanted to pursue claw-shield, that would have made an ideal larzuk socketable, so I kept it in her inventory when she moved on to act 4. She was just a bit under level 31.

Re: Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

My experiences so far are below the spoiler box for Dooku, Yaddle, Mothma, Mothma again and Yaddle again.

Dooku, first act: Already covered. I found a bunch of good wands and heads with good skills to swap between to make the first act go nicely.

Yaddle, second act: Came in level 19, 9 unspent skills. She had 4 points in Warmth, and single points in Teleport, Telekineses and 4 Cold skills for Shiver armor. Already had Stealth. Shopped a +3 Fireball staff for her and made Leaf in it for her. Played her as a Fireball sorc easy through the second act. Left at level 26 with 17 unspent points and a Prayer desert warrior with a Malice scythe. I'm a little sad to see her not be a Fireball sorc since it took a long time to shop that staff for Leaf!

Mothma third act: Came in level 22, 18 unused points. She had Slow Missles and Plague Javelins. I decided she would make a nice Lightning Fury amazon. I was very happy to find Maiden Javelins with +1 skills and I was worried I would run them out but I kept the piles of javelins separate each time I found some.

Mothma fourth act: I had her again and that was no problem. At the end of the third act she had 5 in Lightning Fury her first power skill and she was level 34. At the end of the fourth act she was level 36 and had a Valkerie with 7 points and still 15 unspent points at level 36. I made Ancient's Pledge and used a lot of mana potions. The Prayer desert warrior got a Malice spetum and Stealth and the Valkery lasted a long time, practically the whole act except I redid her at levelups.

Yaddle, fifth act: I haven't decided on her last power skill yet so I don't want to say anything more yet!

Re: Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

Palpatine has completed teh first leg of his journey and is ready to begin the NightMare.

Palpatine
Palpatine, came to me with only one power skill chosen. But boy was it chosen, I think 15 or 17 points spent in bone spear. So that didnt leave a lot of options in my eyes. I went with Bone Prison and Bone Spirit. I think that he will be slow later on but doable. He has a ton of unused atts hopefully that will help whomever ets him in NM. Gear wise I didn't luck out at all in Act 5 his personalization ended up being sanders, which a pair of caster gloves will easily beat. And I ended up knocking holes in a +1 bone spear zombie head for Rhyme. I did outfit him with a Lore helm and a stealth armor. So he should be ok going into NM I would have liked better options for his quest reward items though it just didn't happen.

Re: Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

SWITCHES for NM ACT 1
You may send your character to the next player as soon as you are ready, and you *must* send your character by Sunday the 27th.

IMPORTANT: You may not look at your Act 1 NM character until you have sent your Act 5 character to the next player.

EVEN MORE IMPORTANT: Remember that there is an important rule change in NM difficulty. All those nice little points you had in prerequisites are no longer usable. Now you are only allowed to use your Power Skills, and your Core Skills. Good luck! You may, of course, continue to use skills that are granted by items... those are valid throughout the tournament.

Only one player gets to keep his act 5 character for the moment... Wolron. Congratulations, I hope!

Skunk, you've got Ohomemgrande picking up two characters :)

Biggs is making slow and steady progress through act five. Nihlathak kicked the bucket last night. He'll be on time for the transfer but almost certainly not early.

If anybody's curious who picked your power skills, here's the table that I used to track the characters through Normal:

and discussion
I like Solo!

I have never played a zerk or conc barb for very long, which is why I had been a little leery to make conc his final power skill. Apart from these 2 skills, he is rounded out by Find Item courtesy of jianz

He came to me with a power merc (see the readout, I havent changed anything - he almost never died, although to be fair I was tanking for him a lot). An ethereal malice pike? Madness and pure demolition. He was fury on legs.

Solo's equip was pretty good too, blood boots and gloves, a very nice lore helm (still on him, check it out) and stealth armour. He also had a steeldriver with 175% ed in stash, waiting for a socketing. I obliged, and zerk damage hit the high 800s, and relatively fast swinging too. I filled the socket with a prize rare jewel I had (played with a few calculators to make sure it was the best option) with 20% ed, some str and energy. 1 hit KOs were nice. His switch was a strength flamberge, and the CB made up to some extent for the low damage.

My quest shenk kill dropped something that decided Solo's path for me - The Ward shield. This is end-game worthy probably, high defense, high resists, ok blocking. Match made in heaven for conc. So I regeared him to utilise it. The ML amulet made way for a safety amulet with +10% blocking. The stealth made way for a veeery nice safety armour (see readout). He was nearing invulnerable now ... nearly unhittable (prob ~30% from most critters), 50% blocking. What he needed was LL, and he already had it, but the damage of the strength flamberge was letting him down.

So he crafted up a ton of gems to make a hit power hammer, and got real lucky (see readout). 1 handed conc damage reached 300 if I remember right! The frost nova when hit was nice too, just more safety.

Play was easy. Zerk when safe, smashing everything down, and switching to hammer/shield if mobbed or facing ranged attackers. The ancients were a walk in the park (stand and hammer them into the ground. They took 10 seconds each at most). The throne room was easy enough to run on p4, yielding levels nicely. Conc is really great vs Lister and Co, because it is uninterruptable meaning the stun/kb does nothing! Being swarmed by all of them at once on p8 with merc dead wasnt pleasant, but it was survivable without purples (!). I have mentioned around here before I dont really use purples, although in a tournie like this having them there is nice for the safety-mash factor. The belt load solo came with, he leaves with!

Baal remained the pussy he always is. I found using concentrate with the maul worked well as blocking wasnt needed, and damage seemed high enough to not need the strength sword I kept in the stash. Merc died maybe 3 times in the Act, and Solo had no NDEs.

Finishing up, Solo went to the farm. P8 cows was slow, but soooo safe. The tactic of choice was to run in first, and draw all the heat (the merc would lose life slowly if surrounded by more than 5 or 6 cows, whereas solo could be totally mobbed and be fine). If the merc got caught in a pack, Solo would charge through to his aid, crushing cows and clambering over their corpses to reach his friend. Very fantasy novel-esque, cleaving a path to rescue a comrade! The speed of killing (medium pack of cows = 30 seconds) was made far nicer by the fact that he could hork the corpses with around 40% chance of success. A lot of nice stuff dropped, including 4 S/U of no real importance. The King went down, unfortunately the hork failed.

So Solo moves on to Skunkbelly. He should have really good resists, and be near invulnerable. I can't see him dipping out of the tournie for a while, barring some extreme bad luck. A true tank. He may be a little slow, but there is something enjoyable about him as well, and you can always zerk with the steeldriver if you want to live dangerously.

I get dooku next, looking forward to him as a well made fishymancer. Managed to pick up a decent wand in the cow level in case he doesnt have anything good, relegating the hellplague I had stashed to my extra-competition stashes. I had thought a fire trap assy with blade fury might enjoy that, but i doubt it will be that useful by NM act 5.

This competition is great fun!

He's clearly biased against people with 8-letter names that start with "p". :whistling:

Also, anyone have suggestions for gambling targets? Amidala's just exceeded her inventory gold limit. :)

If you have the the items to upgrade a rare weapon and the means to make it equippable (personalize, socketing), you could try gambling a good weapon. Ferocious has alvl=41, so I suggest a weapon type that has a chance to get it (meaning: you want a reasonable chance to get ilvl >= 41 + qlvl/2). This obviously has better potential the higher level the character is.

Otherwise, there´s nearly always room for improvement on rings and amulets.

EDIT: Nice to read that Solo is doing well.
With the inherent -req. on Steeldriver, it should have a reasonable STR requirement even when upgraded, no? And some scary damage...

Vader has been sent to WoRG, I could never find any really awesome items to quest reward him with, but I think he will be well suited with what he got. Even though its a little unconventional for a necro :)

Offee sent to Brak. Accidentally forgot to attach the char the first time, so you should have 2 emails from me.
