Got back to playing SUWorshipper. She made it to act 3 now. A learning program, with the skill set up she's got. Want her to be a trapper, but the last two random skills both went to the martial arts tree. Sigh.

My MF has been utterly abysmal, with over 80 MF. Maybe I'm just spoiled by all the Eastern Sun I play, but 3 Set/Unique items in act 3? Unreal. Actually, I take that back. It should be 4. Not sure if it was lucky for me, or not. I was doing a fake Duriel's tomb, and an Arctic sabre popped out of an urn. Shortly thereafter, my game froze up, due to some error. ATMA soon showed, no Arctic sabre. With the MF luck I'd had all of act 2, that was kind of appropriate. Although, I would have had a hard time, and would have had to equip it, and rid myself of my claw. At least until I got an act 3 merc.

Duriel dropped me three rares. Another lovely "super drop". Seems almost more often than not I get zilch, on these "super drops". I think that's what I got from Andariel, too, if memory serves me right. Super is the word for it, all right, in a S/U tourney.

I decided to join this one. Had to take the mulligan though as my first roll was a Sorceress and I have no idea how to play those. Got a Paladin on the second. Not good there either, but maybe a chance. I got my first unique already, almost missed it though. Killed Bishibosh at the Cold Plains waypoint and he dropped Biggin's Bonnet. For a melee character that is a good find. Plus, the headgear doesn't get much attention from me at first.

RiverSue's deeds will long be remembered! She simply could not survive the Viper Temple. She had found the stairway down to the altar that contains the Viper Amulet, but she made four unsuccessful attempts to kill the Vipers and their boss. Each attempt ended with RiverSue being run out of the cellar with too many vipers to count on her heels. Each time this happened, I would exit Diablo and restart so that the vipers would not be at the entry. The last time, I fought my way back to the stairway area and there were about 20 vipers (including a champion set and a couple bosses!!! guarding the stairway. At this point, RiverSue simply lost heart. She fought for a while, got surrounded and gave up her ghost.

She never did find that S/U amulet. She found 50 items overall, but so many of them were useless. Her final equipment was pretty lame. Here it is:

RIP RiverSue! There is no worse place for a valkazon than the Viper Temple, especially with a cold mage when all the monsters are CI. The valk and decoys get knocked around like pinballs, skeletons resurrect in your face, and frustration sets in. I know it all too well!

Your tale is amazingly similar to mine in the first S/U tourney, when my valkazon made decent progress in Hell only to be stopped dead in her tracks at that damned temple. My map was awful like yours, with Fangskin too close to the entrance. After about 40 tries (with lots of breaks to cool my temper) I made it through; but only after a very lucky "do or die" run around the altar with snakes on my heels. (I pretty much gave up and went for broke!) :tongue:
Plus, I had better gear to work with (although your Sureshrill and UMed mask aren't too shabby). Seems like your resists were a little low maybe?

Unfortunately, my zon got FE-zapped later in Act 2, so no happy ending. But if you want to read a brief tale of Hell Fangskin's comeuppance, at the hands of a S/U worshipping valkazon, you can read this post: (skip to 8th parargraph.)

Ha Ha! You and me both! Bring back the colors!

I was a color noob when I first joined here, using green (instead of lime) for sets and I think wheat(?) instead of burlywood for uniques. And burly was a "secret" color not even on the menu. Now all those old posts look ridiculous.

Smilies are nice, but I'd trade 80% of them for getting the colors back!
 
I'm pretty much a total Diablo 2 noob, but I started reading this post and it sounds really fun! I'm tempted to try it, but I don't know if I have enough experience under my belt...

Luckily, I started to have much better luck in act 3, and increased my S/U threefold. Nicest was the Nagelring and Arctic Binding, to help me find more of them!

As for me, still no further progress. I've been focusing a bit on my characters under deadlines. Now that I've got one of them (temporarily, I'm sure) in the lead, I'm moving on to the next one for the rest of this week. I'm going to try to get some S/U play time in on Sunday if I get back in town in time. Have to go out of town for my Grandma's service. She died like 5 months ago...don't ask! Anyway, I think I'll just be gone for a very long Saturday.

I'm really really not looking forward to Hell. I expect I'll make it about 5 steps out the gate before seeing "Deeds" So many CI mobs, so little other damage. Of course, on /p1, my wolfies might actually be able to lay a bit of hurt down. Maybe! I'll get a good dose of a preview in the Act 5 cave system I'm sure. On the other hand, I'm expecting Act 4 to mostly be cake, other than the big boy himself. We'll see if that is the case or not on Sunday!

Momo has defeated Duriel on players 1. He wasn't as hard as i expected. The skeletons are weak and the bone spear does no damage either. I rely almost entirely on merc&golem to keep Momo safe. I stored all but 2 of the free skill points as I am not sure were to place them. I will wait to see where the random ones tend to fall and decide later if Momo will be a summoner or a boner. In either case, I expect he will have difficult times ahead.

But all is not lost. There is still hope. I gambled my first unique in my whole career as Diablo player, the Chance Guards. Not exceptional (only 32%), but I am still very pleased. I was aiming for chain gloves and skullcaps with all the money and it finally paid up. Does anyone know around which level it is possible to gamble Tarnhelm?

I´d say! You gambled a unique not halfway through Normal, where gambling money is pretty scarce. I have managed to gamble Culwen´s Point and Goblin Toe in tournaments (when I was hoping for them), but not until mid-NM or so.

The qlvl is only 20, so level 25 or higher should do. Go for it! (but don´t hope too much. One unique with a character is already lucky (the chance is 1/2000 that a gambled item becomes unique (or, at least the game tries to make it unique).)

I rolled a paladin and decided to try my hand at this, although I am obviously so far behind everyone that it is almost silly in my mind to start at this point...

Paladin is an interesting choice because, on one hand, he excels at the one-handed + shield approach so I need not worry about that aspect of the tourny. On the other hand, he has a LOT of one-point wonders because 2 of his trees all occupy his right mouse button, and therefore there are 20 skills where only 1 can be used at a time and the others suffer from extremely situational use. I figure I would end up not being lucky so I named him auradin.

Ironically, so far my random skills have been generally good. Obviously, at this point there isn't TOO much wrong that can happen simply due to the fact that getting prereqs out of the way is beneficial. And I suppose those etra points in resist fire at least offer SOME benefit :rolleyes:

As of yet, no uniques or sets, although I am building up an amazing collection of fallen-dropped almost unqiues! I have, before I have even got to the stony field, an almost hand of broc (meh), an almost hotspur (drat!), and to cap it off an almost gull (DAMN YOU GAME!!!). Yes, I will not only keep track of my uniques and sets, but my triple-durability rares that I can cry over.:cry:

A rough calculation tells me that I need 14 millions to gamble the tarnhelm (2000 x aprox 7000). Of course, the price of a skull cap will raise as Momo raises in level, but so will the cash flow. All I need is perseverence :).
 
I haven’t updated in quite a while! Gibsu has completed Nightmare (cows included) and moved into Hell.

While cruising through Act 5 we found a sweet Unique – Ravenfrost! Finally a source of CBF. We also came up with Rockfleece, which I gave to Jelani for the 10% DR. (Baal dropped junk – five rares and a failed set mace.) Jelani did pretty well in Nightmare, but he spent much of Gibsu’s time in the Blood Moor “sleeping†due to quill rat poison.

Cold immune zombies aren’t as bad as I feared. As long as I can keep the number attacking Gibsu down to three or less, he can tank them. We did have a tough entrance to the Den of Evil, though. Zombies and Gargantuan Beasts (both CI) were guarding the stairs. We had to pop in and out 3-4 times to restock potion while breaking the blockade.

Interestingly, Gibsu still has seven skills which haven’t received any random points. (It was eight, but level 74 gave us Fist of The Heavens.) Some could be quite useful, like Redemption, so I’ll keep hoping.

It’s us again, with an end of act update. (Anyone else still out there?)

Gibsu had to park his first monster in the Cave level 2. :sad2: It was a CI, LI Hungry Dead Boss who was extra strong, CE, and LE. I used Spineripper to apply PMH, but every time Gibsu got close the elemental damage hit him hard and he had to retreat after barely denting the life bar. Eventually we cleared everyone else, popped the sparkly chest and left him wandering down there alone.

Gibsu also parked Treehead, but cleared Tristram. The Countess gave us an Eld. Whee. Much better finds were a Shimmering small charm of Sustenance (15/4), and Laying of Hands in the Barracks! Finally we have something worth breaking up the Arctic trio for. And just in time to shred the Smith. Andariel was also no problem with those. However the only S/U she gave up was yet another Cathan’s Seal.

I needed a break from my nerve-wrecking end-game with Selena the Skilless, but I really wanted to play an assassin. Good thing I have Melica, well into the game.

Quite the wake-up call it was for her, though, trying to establish a foothold in Kurast Bazaar! There was a Cursed Sexton boss (his Blizzards cursed us) just around the corner and I had to deal with his minions, a Thrasher pack, two Thrasher minions (so it would be a really bad idea to move forward more and wake up that boss) and when I took a few steps back to get some maneuvering space to fight this mob, I had to deal with TWO Tree Lurker boss packs (one with a Cursed boss) and a Doom Ape boss from Lower Kurast. This last boss was alone, though, because I had blinded his minions during our transport from the WP. Big sigh of relief when all that was over, and some work determining which pieces of loot I was allowed to pick up and which where "forbidden fruit" (loot from Lower Kurast monsters).

To avoid getting Cursed when fighting that Thrasher boss, I went past them all and fought them much later, from the other direction. That way I could lure all the Thrashers away from the Sexton boss.

First three temples were uneventful. The fourth had a (regular) spider pack in the first room. It was that layout with the tiniest first room possible. Those were no problem, but the Extra Fast Cursed spider boss was. The left part of the temple had been cleared, and that´s where Melica fled with this really quick boss breathing down her neck. Boss got burnt a bit by Blaze from Infernostride. :azn: It took a little while (and nervous dancing on my part) for Geshef to find us but when he did, I decided to tank the boss, trying to end the fight quickly. I used the Spineripper/Steelclash setup, for best safety. Some potions were consumed, but we won rather quickly. Here is our moment of victory. Cool fact: Melica didn´t get poisoned!

Fifth temple was easy but the sixth had a very nasty trap. Four Serpent Magus Champions, plus some archers that apparently were just outside the range of my initial CoS but still close enough to notice us. I got owned and pushed (literally) back to the entrance. These creeps did some enormous damage. I had to flee up the stairs.

Will this be the end? They felt so incredibly powerful. I had only six full rejuves left now. I went back to Upper Kurast to activate a Resist Cold Shrine. Spineripper switch was up, and I had Dragon Talon ready. The plan was to try to knock back a snake so I could get past them. Here goes nothing!

What? The snakes had left some space between them! Melica did not hesitate, she just ran out of the room. Geshef got mobbed into a corner. Very good job, dude, keeping them busy. I managed to get him out with a TP before he died. When we got back, there were a bunch of archers down there (6 of them). But those can be blinded and there was only one snake Champ that had found us. Once Melica managed to get close enough to tank it (too close for a Charge), it was a manageable foe.

Three S/U finds: Sparking Mail (junk), Hwanin´s Refuge and Cleglaw´s Pincers. Geshef got the Refuge because I thought it was better than Rockfleece. Now he may actually be of some use when he tanks, hehe. (This armor has ctc Static Field when stuck)

Cleglaw´s Pincers completes the set, cool. Too bad the shield is so damn crappy, otherwise it would be a no-brainer to use this set. I may do it later anyway (will have to try it), at least on the weapon switch. At lower players settings, Blade Fury use with Knockback, slowing and Crushing Blow could be a great tool against really nasty enemies. I can mix in some Mind Blasts, too. Interesting...

Things are going well for Melica and Geshef. No real dangers to speak of.

One magical item and five rares from Mephisto. It wouldn´t have mattered if they had been green/gold though, because all six items were 2h-weapons. :rolleyes:

Random points lately have been going to Psychic Hammer, and then two consecutive points to Shadow Warrior (my first). I have used her a few times (nice to have an extra CoS source sometimes) but mostly she is just annoying and wakes up monsters before I want her to. And her 400-something life does not last very long...
I have 6 saved skill points. Don´t really know what to do with them. On one hand, Death Sentry and Dragon Tail + Flight are high on my wish list. It will take 5 points to get all those skills if I don´t get lucky with any of the next random points. On the other hand, the most sensible thing to do might be to pump Fade quite a bit. More Phoenix Strike synergies would also be nice. Decisions...


I found a Shael rune in the City, which allowed me to upgrade Steelclash to a Dragon Shield. 68% base blocking on it now.

Hellforge gave me a Hel rune, which isn´t totally useless in this tourney.

Iron Maiden was a concern for me. While Spineripper, Death´s Touch and Bloodrise aren´t huge weapons in any way, I still wanted something with even lower damage. Crushflange was OK, albeit a little slow. Then I came to think about Angelic Sickle that Geshef holds for me. I gave him Death´s Touch and tried the Sickle. Very good weapon for the job. The Doom Knights are fire immune already here in NM. They have good blocking so it´s very hard to deliver a steady stream of the second charge of Phoenix Strike (which is the one that clearly damages them the most) if you don´t have time to react that PS has hit before you hit again. The Death´s Touch/Hand combo was actually too fast for this...


I found a good number of S/U items from Travincal to Bloody Foothills. If you don´t count two-handed weapons (I am not allowed to use them), these shinies have dropped:
-Zakarum´s Hand (Grail item, pretty nice weapon, almost good enough)
-Crushflange (Excellent! CB that can be used with any shield, and MAJOR fire resistance. Great weapon against Diablo.:cool: )
-Sigon´s Guard (Excellent! Very likely candidate for the second socket reward)
-The Jade Tan Do (CBF source with good speed. May be used if I find a great armor later)
-Umbral Disk (Very good blocking if it can be double-upgraded, but no resists. Bye.)
-Rite of Passage (Junk)
-Tearhaunch (These have potential!)
-Atma´s Scarab (Unique amulet I had never seen before. It has a good boost to AR and ctc Amp (same as magical/rare weapons can get). It beat Civerb´s Icon by about 10 miles.)
